Pune sparkle in debut

Timeline  Refresh

22:48
Scorecard:

It was a great debut for Pune, as they notch up two points in style.

Local boy Shrikant Wagh and English domestic cricketer Alphonso Thomas gave them a great start with the ball.

And their formidable top order made mincemeat of Punjab's small total.

That's it for tonight, join us for the next match tomorrow.
22:46
Scorecard:

Around the 70-run mark, Uthappa was dropped by Rimmington, running in from square leg, and soon, Dinesh Karthik dropped Yuvi in the slips.

The two have upped the tempo since, and are in a hurry to notch up Pune's first IPL points
22:39
Scorecard:

Ryder started the eighth over like he wanted to finish the match in that over.

He smote two fours -- one past the bowler and the second through midwicket -- before McLaren dug one in and startled Ryder with bounce as he guided it into Gilly's gloves.
22:25
Scorecard:

Mithun Manhas goes caught behind after a well made 35.

That brings the hard hitting Robin Uthappa to the crease.

Uthappa and Ryder... how long before this match is over?

22:18
Scorecard:

Ryder and Manhas havent given Punjab a chance to put their foot in the door.

They have moved on to 22 and 30 respectively, Ryder the more aggressive, but Manhas taking the better part of the strike.

22:09
Scorecard:

Ryder is taking the lead here.

he is on 17 off 10 balls.

21:51
Scorecard:

Warriors open with Smith and Ryder, as Praveen Kumar strikes in the first over, removing smith.

Mithun Manhas joins Ryder.

21:31
Scorecard:

McLaren got to his fifty in the last over.

But 111 is not the kind of total you will fancy, against Smith, Ryder, Yuvi and Uthappa.
21:27
Scorecard:

McLaren, who spent most of his time shoring up the Punjab innings, launches into Alphonso Thomas for the first six of the match, as Punjab crossed the 100.

He got 15 off that over.

How many more can he get?
21:17
Scorecard:

Wagh, who had an outstanding first spell was back into the attack, and straightaway fired one coming into Chawla's body, and cramped for room, he skied one above his head, for Uthapa to take an easy catch.

21:15
Scorecard:

McLaren and Chawla have played sensibly, but they now need to up the tempo, and the onus is on McLaren.

Into the last three overs now.

21:02
Scorecard:

Ryan McLaren has brought a semblence of stability to this Punjab innings. But he doesnt have much in way of company -- Piyush Chawla is already at the crease.

100 must be the first target they will be aiming for.
20:43
Scorecard:

Abhishek Nayyar had to stay the length for Punjab to dream of some respectability, but he plays a reckless shot and slashes ryder straight to yuvi at point.

Punjab are running around like headless chicken here!

20:32
Scorecard:

Punjab's implosion continues.

There was a horrible mix up after Sunny Singh played another wristy shot on the onside -- this shot of his is reminiscent of VVS -- and ran straight on. Nayyar, the non-striker, stood him up, and he was stranded halfway down the wicket.

20:25
Scorecard:

Sunny Singh opens with a lucky four and a beefy blow for another.

He's a Haryana player, and already has a first class triple hundred to his name.

He has to score at least a part of that 300 here to save Punjab.

Parnell into the attack
20:21
Scorecard:

Karthick goes!!! He slashes Wagh straight down the throat of third man.

Wagh and Alphonso have set the DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai on fire!

Kings XI Punjab are reeling at 9/4 here now!
20:18
Scorecard:

Abhishek Nayyar, who played for Mumbai till last year, in out in the middle now.

Just so you get an idea of how quickly this match can get over if Punjab dont get their act together, here's Pune's top 4: Graeme Smith, Jesse Ryder, Yuvi and Uthappa.
20:16
Scorecard:

Valthaty goes! What a dream start for the Pune Warriors -- mind you this is a team that cost Rs 2400 crore to own, and then more for the players.

Valthaty slashes one to Ryder at point off Alphonso.

Punjab 9/3. This match is threatening to be more one sided than the Delhi Mumbai match earlier in the evening.
20:13
Scorecard:

In the next over off Wagh, Shaun Marsh flicked one to see the ball go into the hands of the only guy in the arc between keeper and squareleg.

5/2 Punjab now...

Dinesh Karthick in out now in the middle for Punjab.
20:05
Scorecard:

IT was a bread and butter ball for gilchrist. But considering how rusty he must have been, Gilchrist was hurried for pace as he was halfway into his iconic pull shot.

The ball must have taken some glove on its way to uthappa behind the stumps and the legend walks, as he has done all his life.
20:00
Welcome to the second match of the night: Pune Vs Punjab.

Punjab won the toss and elected to bat first.

Alphonso Thomas opens the bowling for Pune
19:04
Scorecard:

Whatever hope Dlehi had of making a fight of it on a slow pitch were laid to rest by a calculated sachin innings, who was not out with a brilliantly 46.

Earlier, Malinga had unleashed his trademark missiles, as he took 5/13, as Mumbai staked their credentials for IPL 4 in style.

18:43
Scorecard:

Sharma cut loose in that 12th over from Morkel, and took the lanky quick to all parts of the ground.

First was a savage shot to mid wicket, then a classy one past point, and he rounded it off with a cover drive that would have made the non striker -- sachin -- proud!

This match is on its last legs now.
18:37
Scorecard:

Delhi have been great with the ball, but Mumbai know they dont have much on the board to defend and are quietly whittling this target down.

Sachin on to 22.
18:27
Scorecard:

Sachin has carried on unperturbed in the face of some seriously tight Delhi bowling and is on 18 now.

Mumbai 42/2 after 8 now.
18:19
Scorecard:

In the first ball of the seventh over, van der Merwe pouched one at mid off and, facing away from the stumps, in one action swivelled around to fire a direct hit.

this is a south african special, AB de villiers earlier unveiled it in the world cup.

Delhi 31/2
18:07
Scorecard:

That is a very disciplined start from Delhi, keeping the Mumbai top order quiet.

Raidu releases some pressure as he creams dinda through the covers for four.

Viru drops a tough one off Sachin in the next over.

Pathan now in the attack for Delhi.
17:52
Scorecard:

Not wayward at all that opening ball. Sincere apologies to morkel as he pitches one back of length, as it nips back in to take jacobs's off stump.

Great start from delhi, can they make a match of it?
17:50
Scorecard:

dinda beats sachin's bat outside the off stump with good bounce. Sure you will see less of it as the innings progresses.

Morkel at the other end. Remember he is the other half of the deadliest fast bowling pair around in international cricket. but he is prone to be wayward early on and let's see if mumbai capitalise on it.

17:46
Scorecard:

Sachin and Jacobs get Mumbai's tiny chase underway against Dinda.

17:26
Scorecard:

For a change, Malinga takes aid from a fielder as Ashok dinda is caught.

Malinga finishes with 5/13 and it is all over.
17:14
Scorecard:

That is two wickets in two balls and Delhi have lost the plot again!

Satish fired a flat throw that Jacobs took it low to break the wicket. Pathan walks out and Delhi in deep trouble.

And then Malinga cleaned up rao with an inswinging yorker/full toss (does it matter when malinga is slinging them) and did an encore with the left handed morkel.

17:05
Scorecard:

Ojha and Rao took Delhi to 81/4 in 14. And in the first ball of the 15th off Murtaza, Ojha holed out in the deep.

Here's when Delhi needed to put pedal to metal. For, effectively, they have only 4 overs -- i am discounting Malinga's two, where they'll be lucky to get run a ball without losing a wicket -- to see their side to a respectable total.

But with Ojha going, Delhi will have to dig in for one more over or two.

It is advantage Mumbai all the way now.
16:54
Scorecard:

Mumbai brought on Franklin and Rao and Ojha continued their nudge and run strategy.

This is period these two need to see off and set the launch pad for Delhi.

16:46
Scorecard:

Munaf continues and Delhi reach their 50 in the 10th over -- their slowest ever.

Now a lot depends on how these two play the next two or three overs.

In that munaf over, Sachin fired a direct hit, that saw munaf patel -- not backing up -- swing his left leg comically. This was the same guy who chastised murtaza in the earlier over for not throwing to the man backing up! :)

16:38
Scorecard:

Munaf bowls a tidy over, the eight of the innings going for one run.

Sachin looks to keep a tight leash, and brings on Pollardm who bowls out another tidy over.

16:33
Scorecard:

The Delhi Daredevils are running around the Kotla like headless chicken!

Aaron Finch, who just had to rotate the strike to Ojha, who was attacking, loses his head to one from Bhajji in the seventh over, and holes out to Raidu at deep square leg!
16:29
Scorecard:

This Delhi team is not going to slow down for anything!

Naman Ojha, who cut his teeth under Shane Warne at the Royals, carries on with the same aggressive streak, carting munaf for a four and a six.
16:25
Scorecard:

After he played out the maiden from Malinga, Sehwag would have been looking forward to facing Murtaza, but it wasnt to be, as he -- from the non-striker's end -- called Finch for a suicidal single.

Sachin at short fine leg fired a flat direct hit to catch Sehwag well short of the crease.

Deadly blow this for Delhi. Naman Ojha walks in.

Aaron Finch has to carry this innings forward now.
16:21
Scorecard:

Sehwag patiently sees off a maiden over from Malinga.

It is good to see him keep his head about, as each ball that he knocks off Malinga's quota means that some young Delhi batter's toes are safer for that much longer.

Good thinking from Sehwag, as Malinga will now have to be saved up for the end overs.

16:17
Scorecard:

A pattern that is emerging this IPL is fielding captains not using bowlers for more than one over in the first six powerplay overs.

After Bhajji and Malinga, the third over saw Murtaza Ali, and Sehwagcarried on like he hadnt seen two early wickets falling at the other end.

He got a four in the over, and Delhi are 23/2 after 3. Sehwag is not going back down.

Malinga back on.
16:10
Scorecard:

In the second over, Malinga, carrying the kind of form he showed in the world cup, straightaway unleashed a guided missile aimed at the base of Warner's middle stump.

Two balls later, a young U Chand was again clueless, as he dared to loft Malinga into the stands, but the result was the same.

It was the kind of ball you dont have any reply to, and Warner goes.

Earlier, Mumbai opened with Bhajji, Warner took a quick single, to bring Viru onstrike.

Sehwag, almost offended that Sachin would dare open with a spinner to him, took a long stride to one that Bhajji dragged fractionally short, and launched it into orbit. What it had in height it lacked in distance and the ball landed a couple of yards inside the long off boundary.

The next ball was fuller and Viru duly sent it into the stands.
15:59
Scorecard:

Delhi start with Sehwag, Warner, Finch, U chand, Naman Ojha, V Rao, Irfan Pathan, van der Merwe, Morne Morkel, Umesh Yadav and Ashok Dinda.

It's a batting order beefy on the top and lean in the middle, and they would want the best possible start from the Viru-Warner firm
15:32
The Mumbai Indians travel to the Feroze Shah Kotla in New Delhi to take on the Daredevils.

The last match at this venue witnessed a virtuoso opening partnership between Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag, and now the two are walking out for the toss as opposing skippers.

Sachin even said it was weird to walk out with Sehwag without the bat in hand :)

Sachin called wrong and Sehwag has chosen to bat.

Standby for the Viru-Warner explosion in a few minutes from now!
