Valthaty shines twice in Hyderabad

Following up that spectacular hundred against Chennai Super Kings on Wednesday was always going to be a tough ask.

But Paul Valthaty rose to the occasion and how?

He played a role with both the ball and the bat in his side's comprehensive eight-wicket win over Deccan Chargers at Uppal.

The youngster first struck with the ball, picking up four for 29.

Soon after, he was back in his familiar role, making 75 with the bat and helping his team to a second successive win.

His 47-ball knock was studded with eight boundaries and five huge sixes.

And he shared a record 136-run opening wicket partnership with his captain, Adam Gilchrist (61).

Kings XI Punjab thrash Deccan Chargers by eight wickets at Uppal to score their second successive win in the fourth edition of the Indian Premier League on Saturday.

It is a perfect follow up to the team from Punjab's comprehensive win over Chennai Super Kings on Wednesday.

Chasing a competitive 166 to win, the visitors eased home with 14 balls to spare.

Paul Valthaty (75) and Adam Gilchrist (61) put on a record 136 runs for the opening wicket (off just 84 balls) to lay the foundation of what in the end was a resounding win.

As regards Deccan Chargers, they lost again at home having snapped that streak against Bangalore just a couple of days back.

Two overs later, Mishra accounts for Valthaty.

The batsman first hits Mishra over midwicket for a maximum and then hits another boundary wide of long off.

However, Mishra has the last laugh, having Valthaty (75) caught by Ishant at long on.

Mishra finishes with two for 28. Ishant comes in to bowl the 17th over and Duminy drops Dinesh Karthik at point in the second ball.

Punjab need just 10 to win, with three overs left to achieve that.

Dale Steyn back into the attack in the 12th over. He begins with a wide but concedes four runs otherwise.

Duminy is back and Valthaty hits it straight down the ground for his third maximum, a shot that helps him reach his fifty.

What a follow up to that spectacular hundred against Chennai for the young man.

He celebrates the same by smashing the last ball over long off for another maximum.

Mishra though has Gilchrist (61) caught by Ravi Teja at deep square leg in the next over.

Punjab lose their first wicket at 136, in the 14th over.

Abhishek Nayar comes in to replace his captain. Christian concedes three in the 15th over.

Gony is expensive in his second over as well, Gilchrist first hits him over the midwicket and then smashing over wide long on for a maximum.

Gony has now conceded 35 runs off his two overs. Valthaty hits a boundary off Mishra.

Daniel Christian comes in to bowl the ninth over. Gilchrist slams his second ball way over long on for a maximum, hits the next ball past point for a boundary and three balls later, hammers it wide of sweeper cover for another boundary.

In the next over by Mishra, the Australian comes down the ground and hits a maximum to not only complete a well-deserved fifty but also help his team get past the 100-run mark.

Punjab is walking away with this match at this stage, 104 for no loss after 10 overs. JP Duminy bowls the 11th over. He concedes seven. A relief, shall we say.

Manpreet Gony replaces Steyn in the fifth over, and Valthaty welcomes him with successive boundaries, the first over midwicket and the second over mid off.

Valthaty gets the distance in the third ball, over mid-off again. The shot also helps Punjab get past the 50-run mark.

14 runs off the first three balls is followed by a dot ball. However, the fifth ball does find its way to the long off fence. And so does the sixth, towards third man this time.

23 runs off the fifth over then. Ishant slows down thing a bit though conceding just three runs in the sixth over.

Steyn concedes nine in his first over and 10 in his second, Valthaty hitting a boundary over square leg.

Ishant bowl a good first over but Valthaty smashes him for a maximum in his second.

Valthaty is caught by Duminy but it is off a no ball.

A good start for Punjab this, 36 without loss in four.

In the penultimate over, Valthaty picks up the wickets of Daniel Christian (30) and Amit Mishra (0) in successive balls.

Valthaty finishes with four for 29.

Christian's 14-ball cameo, inclusive of two boundaries and an equal number of maximums, helps Chargers' to a formidable total.

The home team manage 165 for eight.

Kings XI Punjab have a task at hand for sure.

The latter becomes the victim of a slower ball by Paul Valthaty. It's 91 for three after 12 overs.

Dhawan's 35-ball 46 was inclusive of five hits to the fence and one over it.

Chennai Super Kings beat Royal Challengers Bangalore by 21 runs on Saturday to register their second win of this edition of the Indian Premier League.

Chasing a formidable 184 to win, the visitors could only manage 161 for seven.

It was the team from Bangalore's third straight defeat in the competition following their opening win away at Kochi.

In the next ball, Asad Pathan put down Hussey (on 66) at sweeper cover. Hussey is fortunate again when Agarwal puts him down at long on three balls later.

What more he gets a boundary in the bargain.

Zaheer comes in to bowl his final over, the penultimate of the innings. And Hussey pulls him to the fence. But Zaheer ends well, conceding just four runs in his final five balls.

Van der Wath bowls the final over. He conceded 15 in his last.

However, he begins his last with a wicket, having Morkel (9) caught by Agarwal.

And he has S Badrinath (5) caught by Ninan off the last ball. Van der Wath finishes with two for 49.

Hussey, dropped on eight and 66, finishes unbeaten on 83, his 56-ball knock inclusive of 11 hits to the fence and one over it.

Chennai finish their innings on 183 for five.

What an innings for the Australian in his first match.

The two hits in Vettori's final two balls also spoils the New Zealander's bowling figures (4-0-23-0).

Hussey continues his good form with two boundaries in Kohli's next over.

Zaheer replaces Vettori and Dhoni (22) hits a boundary and a six off the first two balls before edging the third to the keeper.

The third wicket partnership between Dhoni and Hussey yields Chennai 51 runs off just 34 balls.

Hussey and Raina are putting up a good partnership for the second wicket.

In the 11th over, bowled by Ninan, Raina (29) picks up 16 runs in four balls before getting carried away and hitting straight to Mayank Agarwal.

Raina's 16-ball knock was inclusive of three boundaries and a six and his secon wicket partnership with Hussey helped add 45 runs (in just 26 balls) to the Chennai total.

Ninan has been expensive but at the same time he has also picked up two wickets.

MS Dhoni comes in to bat and Virat Kohli comes in to bowl the 12th over. A single by Hussey helps Chennai reach the 100-run mark.

Ryan Ninan comes in to replace van der Wath and Vijay desptaches his second ball for a maximum over long-off to raise the 50-run partnership for the opening wicket.

However, Vijay (31) gets carried away with his aggression and hits the next ball straight to Zaheer at long-off.
