Kolkata go top of table with laboured win

Timeline  Refresh

22:49
Scorecard:

Once Warne got through his quota, everything depended on Tait for Rajasthan.

But Tiwari, who struggled against Warne, decided he had had enough and targeted the erratic Tait.

He square-scooped Tait for a six over square leg, and then lofted him inside out for a four over mid on, and then off a no-ball, hoicked him to the mid-wicket fence.

Kolkata finish this off in style.
22:41
Scorecard:

Warne has thrown everything at his disposal -- including bowling himself out as early as the 12th over; he finished with 1/17 -- but Gambhir and Tiwari have weathered the threat.

22:28
Scorecard:

Warne and Co have kept a tight leash on proceedings here.

But Gambhir and boys wouldnt mind going slow as long as they keep their wickets safe.

Rajasthan need a few wickets here to get back into the match.
22:16
Scorecard:

The way Warne was bowling, a wicket was imminent, and Bisla was lured to hit it straight to the only man in the ring onthe offside.

Raut rounded it off with a great low-flying catch.

But Rajasthan need Gambhir.
22:06
Scorecard:

Warne is generating vicious turn, and Gambhir has to be around to avoid a collapse.

This is a wicket that has something for the bowlers, and Kolkata will have to be very cautious in dealing with Warne and Co here.
21:48
Scorecard:

If Kolkata had any hope of a walkover, Tait dispelled it with that first over.

This match is very much alive.
21:44
Scorecard:

Tait digs one in and hurries the seemingly impregnable Kallis into a pull. The ball goes right into orbit, and three men were waiting when it came down. There was no mix-ups and Kallis goes.

21:21
Scorecard:

It is all over for Rajasthan.

Lee came back to fire one and smoke out Trivedi.

Balaji was the pick of the bowlers, but it was an overall ruthless performance for Kolkata.

21:18
Scorecard:

Shakib al Hassan knocks back Singh's middle stump.

The next ball Tait went the same way.

Shane Warne, Tait and Co will have a lot of work to do when they come back after the break.
21:13
Scorecard:

Balaji, in an exemplary over, digs one short, and Maneria couldnt do anything better than guide it straight down third man's throat.
21:09
Scorecard:

Balaji does an encore of the Watson wicket, as he pitches one back of length, nips it back in, and uproots Rahane's stumps!

Rajasthan in deep trouble now.
21:01
Scorecard:

If Rajasthan had any hope of salvaging it, it was Ross Taylor. And Pathan lures him out of the crease for a great stumping.
20:54
Scorecard:

Raut hits it straight to the fielder and calls the non-striker for a non-existent run and it is disaster.

Rajasthan are running around here like headless chicken.
20:37
Scorecard:

A mix up and some smart thinking by Abdullah result in Fazal's dismissal.

20:24
Scorecard:

The Royals have lost two wickets and both have been high class.

Abdullah, set up Paunikar for the charge, and when he danced down the wicket, dropped it short, and spun it away, and the 'keeper does the rest.
20:18
Scorecard:

Balaji worked out the perfect delivery, pitching just back of length, and nipping back in and gets Watson.
20:15
Scorecard:

Watson and Paunikar have been unhurried here till now.

Balaji into the attack.
19:59
Scorecard:

Welcome to the second match of the day.

Kolkata and Rajasthan both have two wins and a loss each.

Winner of this match will go top of the table.
19:19
Scorecard:

Hopes did not cross over when Rao got out, and he was conveniently on hand to take the strike in the last over, for a fabulous win.

Delhi needed it, and they have shown what they are capable of when they click.

19:16
Scorecard:

Venugopal Rao wsa intent on finishing the match in Yuvi's over, but the skipper kept his head about, and nails Rao in the deep.

One over, eight needed. Eminently gettable. But it is nine-ten and jack to come.

19:14
Scorecard:

Yuvi nailed Finch of the first ball of the 19th over. Caught and bowled.

This is great captaincy from him, brining himself on, and he delivers.

19:12
Scorecard:

Wagh came in on the 18th over, with a plan.

He would angle it away from the righthanders and keep it just wide enough for it to be a legitimate delivery.

It worked to begin with, and Rao and Finch were tied up, and unable to get it away.

Finch made amends in the fourth and fifth ball, stepped into the line, and tonked him for two consecutive sixes.

The next ball, Wagh came apart and fired a wide on the offside.

That over cost 18, and things are well set here, with both teams in with a chance.
19:05
Scorecard:

Venugopal Rao is determined to make a match of this.

The ask is hovering around 2 runs a ball. Aaron Finch has to join in, and if these two can get something here, it will set it up for Hopes to come and finish off things.

18:56
Scorecard:

Rahul Sharma has been getting good purchase and he traps Wade plumb with a classic leg spinner.

Pune have this one in the bag now.
18:44
Scorecard:

Ojha and Pathan were consolidating the good work of Warner-Viru, but Yuvi brought himself on into the attack and as PAthan took a swing and holed out.

Then, Ojha was lat in bringing his foot down, and was stumped by his counterpart, Uthappa.

Yuvi on a hat-trick!
18:35
Scorecard:

That was the wicket they wanted and Pune get Viru through Ryder.

Ryder has been mixing it up well, and Sehwag, immediately after a slashed four, pitched one back of length, and breached his defence.

Delhi need a monumental effort from the rest to avoid a third straight defeat.
18:30
Scorecard:

Sehwag has taken the lead now, and Irfan joins him.

Irfan was pedestrian with the ball, and he needs to come good with the bat to justify his price tag.

18:22
Scorecard:

There was only one way Warner is going to get out and it was a run out.

These two have been running well and it came against the run of play on a second run.

18:16
Scorecard:

Not often do you see Viru lagging behind his opening partner, but that is exactly what has happened today.

Warner has decided to take the lead, as Delhi take 15 and 17 off consecutive overs.
18:09
Scorecard:

In the fifth over, Warner decided Thomas was his man and smote him for a four and two sixes.

Pune havent got the early breakthrough and it is going to turn into desperation very soon, if Viru and Warner get on top of the bowling.
18:02
Scorecard:

Wayne Parnell has been a trusted ally for Thomas and Wagh, but today he allowed Viru and Warner to release the pressure.

These two have got a good look in now, and are all set to cut loose.

17:54
Scorecard:

Wagh and Thomas, as always, have started on the right length and line, and have made the Delhi openers work for their runs.

McLaren into the attack.
17:45
Scorecard:

David Warner and Viru Sehwag walk out in pursuit of 187.

Pune, in contrast to what they did today, have depended on Alphonso and Wagh to muscle out the opposition.

Interesting battle this is going to be.
17:33
Scorecard:

Though Pune lost their way after Ryder's exit, Yuvi ensured he stayed till the end and powered Pune to

He finished with 66 off 32, taking 24 runsoff the last over, which in all cost 26.

Pune finish at 187/6. This one will be hard to get, but no total is beyond Sehwag and Warner when they click. Will they?

17:27
Scorecard:

Hopes goes 10 off his last over, to finish with 1/26 for the day. He was the best bowler on display today and Delhi will hope he comes good with the bat too.

On to the last over. Can Yuvi do justice to Ryder's start?
17:23
Scorecard:

Two overs to go, and Pune will be looking at at least 30 runs from these two.

But hopes has one, and how they see him off will be crucial for the final total
17:21
Scorecard:

Hopes has been the best bowler on sight, and he delivers a tight over in the death.

He's got one more over, and that is going to be the most crucial over as Yuvi looks for a strong finish.

At the other end, Mishra goes to a rank bad ball. Dinda wanted to bowl it from the back of his hand, and it came out as a short pitched leg spinner. But Mishra messed it.
17:13
Scorecard:

Yuvi showed a glimpse of what could be if he stayed till the end, as he smacked the spinner out of the park.

The pre-launch tests have been made now, and it is time for the assault.

17:08
Scorecard:

Yuvi knows he now has to see this innings off, and has played himself in well.

This is also a great opportunity for Mohnish Mishra to show that his knock against Kochi where he tonked Murali for two consecutive sixes was no fluke.

128/4 in 15.
17:02
Scorecard:

The Pune Warriors who were barrelling down the Expressway when Ryder was around, seem to have taken a wrong turn when he got out and are now losing their way.

The three overs after Ryder's exit brought only 12 runs and Yuvi, looking to make amends, swung Nadeem for a six.

Uthappa tried to copy it, and charged down the wicket, but Nadeem dropped it short, and he hit it straight down long-off's throat.
17:00
Scorecard:

That was a strange period of play.

It was as though the Delhi bowlers thought, Okay, Ryder's gone, we'll get back to work.

Umesh Yadav, who was sprayed all over the park by Ryder, tied up Uthappa and Yuvi.

The three overs after Ryder's exit have brought 12 runs. Yuvi's got to cut loose here.

16:48
Scorecard:

Ryder picked spinner Nadeem from outside the off stump and was dropped by Dinda at deep midwicket.

He was on 48.

Note that down, he told the Daredevils as he smote a six and four off the next two balls to get his fifty in style.

He went for it again and was caught at deep square leg.

Over to Yuvi now. Uthappa should join him...
16:43
Scorecard:

Ryder swatted the spinner for a six, before Hopes came back for his second over.

Manhas swung him for a six over fine leg, and off the very next ball -- held back a bit -- hit it straight to mid-off.

Yuvraj joins Ryder. Wonder if there is a more destructive combination in world cricket?

16:34
Scorecard:

It was left to the aptly named James Hopes to restore some sanity to the proceedings as he kept his head about and stuck to a wicket-to-wicket line on good length. Gave away only three runs.

The time-out's been taken and hope his colleagues pick up the cue from him.
16:30
Scorecard:

Mark Boucher in the telly summed it up best. 'Ryder... intimidating. And he is not even looking to dominate.'

It has been that kind of day so far for Ryder, who has been served some delicious stuff by the Delhi bowlers. All he had to do was to stand and hit, and he has been doing that with some consistency today.

He took Umesh Yadav for three fours -- two on the leg and one on the off -- and rubbed off on Mithun Manhas, who helped himsed to a slashed four wide of third man.

21 came off that over, and Pune now 63/1 in 6
16:23
Scorecard:

When Jesse Ryder can manage to get his bearings, he is one of the most destructive forces in World Cricket.

Thankfully for him, the IPL does not require long spells of concentration, and quick spell when you are middling the ball well is enough.

Jesse Ryder is in that kind of mood today, and in Pathan's second over, he slapped it hard past the bowler for a four before picking one from outside the off stump and despositing it somewhere in Panvel.

14 runs came off that over.
16:17
Scorecard:

After a quiet over from Irfan Pathan, Dinda, the man who almost got Smith in the previous over, was back.

The first ball was pitched short, and Smith unleashed a murderous slap to dispatch it in front of the square.

After that it was a couple of mistimed edges as Ryder and Smith overdid their aggressive shots.

In the last ball of the over, Dinda got one to climb on to Smith as he mistimed his pull to Irfan Pathan at deep point.

Dinda gets his man.
16:08
Scorecard:

First ball of the second over, Dinda seemed to have drawn a big edge off a slashing Smith, but there was no appeal, or rather a weak appeal, and the umpire was not interested.

We'll put that down as a reprieve for Smith. The next ball was duly turned away for four.

Irfan Pathan to Ryder now.
16:02
Scorecard:

Delhi open with Venugopal Rao, and Ryder promptly tonks him for two big sixes. 14/0 after 1 over
15:49
Delhi are coming into the match with 2 losses.

Pune have muscled the opposition with their fast bowlers in the first two matches.

In the second half of this match lies the interesting battle between Viru-Warner and Alphonso and Wagh.

With Pune batting first, there is a good likelihood that we will see their lower order on show today.

Pune: GC Smith, JD Ryder, Yuvraj Singh, RV Uthappa, AA Jhunjhunwala, M Manhas, MD Mishra, R Sharma, SB Wagh, WD Parnell, AC Thomas

Delhi: V Sehwag, DA Warner, AJ Finch, MS Wade, NV Ojha, Y Venugopal Rao, JR Hopes, IK Pathan, S Nadeem, AB Dinda, U Yadav
