The pressure of having to score 487 runs just to make England bat
again definitely played on their batsmens mind. Virender Sehwag achieved a
dubious record (a golden pair), when James Anderson had him caught by Andrew
Strauss at first slip.
They finished on 35 for one (after 12 overs). Rahul Dravid
was batting on 18 and giving him company was Gautam Gambhir on 14.
With two days of the match left to be played, India is
almost certain of facing another heavy defeat, one that will not only ensure
England the series win but also the no.1 Test ranking.
A spectacular catch by Sachin Tendulkar at deep backward square leg, off Mishra, meant the English stumper was sent back to the pavilion for just five.
England 615 for six after 167 overs, a lead over 391.
It may be construed either as frustration, with his main bowlers failing to make an impact, or a strategy, of improving the over rate.
Amit Mishra has come in to bowl the 144th over, replacing Sreesanth (31-4-129-0). It is for the first time in the day that the spinner has been asked to bowl.
Mishra's fifth is a no-ball, something which affected him on the second day.
England 539 for three after 145 overs, an overall lead of 315.
England has added 22 runs in the first 10 overs of the day.
A couple off Sreesanth helps Cook reach a deserved double hundred. What a turnaround it has been for the 26-year-old? He had scored only 20 runs in the last two Tests.
The rain break has extended the day's play by a whisker. The official close of play is now 6.27 pm (local time), with the option of play being extended for another half an hour.
A single off Ishant (by Cook) helps bring on the 100-run partnership for the fourth wicket. This is England's ninth century stand in the series. They also have an additional seven 50-run partnerships. The run also boosts England's lead to 250.
Cook and Eoin Morgan have got things moving off smoothly for England. The first over on resumption on Day 3 from Ishant Sharma fetching five runs and the next, from Praveen Kumar, six. Morgan gets his fifty, his fourth in Tests.
A quiet over follows and England have 468 runs for 3 wickets. Cook is on 188 and Morgan 50.
Indias opener Gautam Gambhir was candid in summing up his teams showing on Day 2, making no excuses for the dismal showing. Instead, he credited the English opposition.
England is playing some really good cricket, he admitted. They have always taken the initiative in the series and put us under a lot of pressure. We have just not lived up to the reputation we had and have not played the kind of cricket we should have. There are no excuses for that, he added.
Surely, India have no excuses; they have been outplayed, particularly in this Test.
Alastair Cook is closing in on a double hundred. On Thursday, Day 2, he stroked his 19th Test century as England amassed 456 for three. It's his best knock against India, surpassing the 104 not out at Nagpur in 2005-06.
The prolific opener will resume on 182 not out, having started the day on 27. Eoin Morgan, unbeaten on 44, will also look to score quickly and pile on the misery on the weary-looking Indians.
Welcome to live updates from the third day'ss play in the third Test between India and England at Edgbaston.
England have sailed past India's first innings of 224 and lead by 232 runs. With three days remaining and seven wickets in hand, the hosts are well placed to take an unassailable 3-0 lead in the four-match series.
Warm weather here; will it help swing? Will England get the remaining Indian wickets quickly? How long will England go on batting before declaring?
