India end Day Three on 35 for one

Timeline  Refresh

23:26

The pressure of having to score 487 runs just to make England bat again definitely played on their batsmens mind. Virender Sehwag achieved a dubious record (a golden pair), when James Anderson had him caught by Andrew Strauss at first slip.

They finished on 35 for one (after 12 overs). Rahul Dravid was batting on 18 and giving him company was Gautam Gambhir on 14.

With two days of the match left to be played, India is almost certain of facing another heavy defeat, one that will not only ensure England the series win but also the no.1 Test ranking.

23:05

Rahul Dravid has come in to replace Sehwag.

It will be Stuart Broad sharing the new ball.

Dravid and Gambhir have helped India recover for the time being here.

The visitors have reached 24 for one after eight overs.

22:33

Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir open the batting for India and it is James Anderson first up for England.

The bowler accounts for Sehwag second ball, Strauss making no mistake at first slip.

It is a pair for Viru, in fact a golden pair (two first ball ducks).
22:22

Alastair Cook has failed in his bid to reach 300.

Ishant has him caught by Raina for 294, an innings that was inclusive of 33 fours.

Tim Bresnan remained unbeaten on 53.

England declare at 710 for seven (188.1 overs).

India need 487 runs to make the home team bat again. A lost cause this.
22:14

A massive six off Ishant helps Bresnan record his third Test fifty, his second of the series.

It also ensures the English total gets past the 700-run mark.

The home team has now made 704 for six after 187 overs, a lead of 480.

Bad light stopped play for about 11 minutes.

Dhoni is making Raina bowl a lot of overs here.

It may be construed either as frustration, with his main bowlers failing to make an impact, or a strategy, of improving the over rate.

Amit Mishra has come in to bowl the 144th over, replacing Sreesanth (31-4-129-0). It is for the first time in the day that the spinner has been asked to bowl.

Mishra's fifth is a no-ball, something which affected him on the second day.

England 539 for three after 145 overs, an overall lead of 315.

Indias opener Gautam Gambhir was candid in summing up his teams showing on Day 2, making no excuses for the dismal showing. Instead, he credited the English opposition.

England is playing some really good cricket, he admitted. They have always taken the initiative in the series and put us under a lot of pressure. We have just not lived up to the reputation we had and have not played the kind of cricket we should have. There are no excuses for that, he added.

Surely, India have no excuses; they have been outplayed, particularly in this Test.
