Australia beat India in first Test by 122 runs

It's finally all over for Team India. Australia won the first Test at the MCG on Thursday by 122 runs to take a 1-0 lead in the four-match series.

 

Umesh Yadav was the last man out, caught in the deep by David Warner for 21.  

 

It was a clinical performance by the hosts after they set India a challenging 292 runs for victory.

 

James Pattinson led the charge for the hosts, finishing with 4-53, while Siddle and Hilfenhaus picked two wickets apeice.

 

For India, Sachin Tendulkar was the highest scorer with 32, followed by MS Dhoni with 30, in the second essay.

 

The second Test starts in Sydney on Jan 3.

James Pattinson is in the middle of a good spell as he removes Indian skipper MS Dhoni for 23.

 

Earlier the pacer had removed Zaheer Khan after the Indian fast bowler smacked him for a six and boundary, earlier in the over.

 

Zaheer first smacked Pattinson over point for a boundary, then clobbered a half-volley over the bowlers head for a maximum.

 

However Pattinson had the last laugh as he had Zaheer caught at forward short leg for 13.

 

India were 144-9 after 42.4 overs.

India's famed batting line up collapsed like a pack of cards once again as they lost five wickets in the post lunch session for 68 runs.

 

After tea, Peter Siddle struck in his first over as he sent R Ashwin back to the pavillion with a brilliant bouncer.

 

Siddle digged one short to Ashwin, which bounced a bit high on the off-spinner as he spooned an easy catch to Ed Cowen at forward short-leg. for 30.

 

India were 118-7, still requiring another 172 runs for a win.

 

The pace trio of Ben Hilfenhaus, James Pattinson and Peter Siddle rocked Indians with their line and length to virtually put India out of the contest.

 

Tendulkar looked good in his brief stay in the middle, rest all of them struggled to deal with the swing of Aussie bowlers.

Peter Siddle catches the big fish as he removes Sachin Tendulkar for 32 to leave India reeling at 81-6.

 

Siddle bowls one bit wide outside the offstump as Tendulkar goes for a shot on the rise but edges it to Mike Hussey in gully.

 

Australia have the match in their hand now!!!!

James Pattinson now claims the other big fish as he had VVS caught at square leg for one.

 

Pattinson spears one on Laxman's pads as the right-hander goes for the flick -- well timed one but straight to Ed Cowan.

 

Couple of balls later, Ben Hilfenhaus had VIrat Kohli caught plumb in front of the stumps to leave India reeling at 69-5.

 

Tendulkar is batting on 28, while MS Dhoni is yet to open his account.

James Pattinson produced a beauty to remove Rahul Dravid to leave India reeling at 58-3 after 19 overs.

 

Advantage Australia as Dravid leaves the gap between bat and pad as t he ball crashes on the middle stump, much to the delight of the Australian fans.

 

Sachin Tendulkar has lood rock solid in the middle with 19 along with VVS Laxman, who is yet to open his account.

After Sehwag, it was Gautam Gambhir's turn to make the long walk back to the pavillion after edging one to Ricky Ponting in slips.

 

Peter Siddle who was brought in after lunch, struck the blow as he got one to kick and bounce and Gambhir couldn't get the bat away in time much to the delight of the Australian players.

 

India under a bit of pressure now as India were 42-2 after 12.2 overs.

Ben Hilfenhaus struck early as he had Virender Sehwag walking back to the pavillion for just seven chasing 292 for victory in the first Test in Melbourne.

 

A short and wide ball from Hilfenhaus as Sehwag smacks it right in the middle of the bat only to find Mike Hussey who takes a brilliant catch in gully.

 

India, however were 24-1 after 9 overs headding to lunch on Day 4.

Ben Hilfenhaus struck early as he had Virender Sehwag walking back to the pavillion for just seven as India were 17-1 chasing 292 for vicotry in the first Test.

 

A short and wide ball from Hilfenhaus as Sehwag smacks it right in the middle of the bat only to find Mike Hussey who takes a brilliant catch in gully.

 

India 17-1 after 6.3 overs.

Ishant Sharma finally wraps up the innings as he had Ben Hilfenhaus edging one to VVS Laxman in second slips as Australia's second innings folded up at 240.

 

It means India will have to chase down 292 for victory in the first Test with more than one-and-a-half days play remaining.

 

James Pattinson remained unbeaten on 37. For India Umesh Yadav was the most succesful bowler with 4-70, alongwith Zaheer Khan who finished with 3-53.

The last wicket pair of James Pattinson and Ben Hilfenhaus have put on a frustrating 32 run stand so far to frustrate the Indians.

 

Zaheer Khan removed Mike Hussey early and since then Indian bowlers have failed to knock off the tail as Australia stretch their lead to 280.

 

Pattinson has been impressive so far -- looked solid in defence and also playing nice shots in the middle.

 

Australia were 230-9 after 75 overs.

Zaheer Khan strikes in his fourth of the day as he removes the set Mike Hussey for 89.

 

A peach of a delivery as the ball just moved away after picthing taking Hussey's bat and was safely pouched by MSD behind the stumps.

 

Indians would now look to wrap the innings early now was Australia were 197/9 after 67 overs with  an overall lead of 248.

Welcome to the fourth day's play as India will look to wrap things early for India.

 

Looks like Zaheer Khan will open the proceedings for India with Pattinson on strike.

 

Australia have a healthy lead of 230, and will look to swell it up pasth the 250-run mark
