Day 1: Gambhir tops IPL auction with $2.4m bid

Timeline  Refresh

18:28   Yusuf, Uthappa, Rohit also cross $2 million mark
It turned out to be an action packed day one of the 2010 Indian Premier League Players' Auction with new records being set as a total of 72 players were sold.

Gautam Gambhir was sold for the highest price with Kolkata Knight Riders signing him for a massive $2.4million, while Yusuf Pathan ($2.1m), Robin Uthappa ($2.1m) and Rohit Sharma ($2m) were the other players to make it past the $2-million mark.

There were a few disappointments too with legends like Sourav Ganguly and Brian Lara left unsold along with 14 other players.

Gurunath Meiyappan owner of Chennai Super Kings stressed that their main focus was on retaining their winning combination.

"We worked three years with this set of players and our hard work paid off when we won the IPL and Champions League last year. So our main focus was to retain our players, though we had a few options like Dirk Nannes for Doug Bollinger," he said.

"The key player that we missed out on was Muralitharan, who was bought by Team Kochi."

Team Kochi co-owner Vivek Venugopal sounded a satisfied after the opening day.

"We have a good set of players coming in and we are happy with the way the things have stressed out,"he said.

IPL chairman Chirayu Amin also clarified that there was no issue with getting NOCs for England players and they were snubbed by the franchises on their own.

"There was no issue with England players at all. The franchises have decided to select the players on their cricketing abilities. The NOC issue was settled late last night," he said.

The final and second day of the Players' Auction will start at 1100 IST on Sunday.

18:03   Bangalore purchase Pujara for $700,000
In the second group of batsmen, Tamil Nadu's S Badrinath went for a whopping $800,000 and not surprising he was picked up by Chennai Super Kings after starting with a bid of $100,000.

India's Test batsman Cheteshwar Pujara was taken by Royal Challengers Bangalore for $700,000, for seven times his base price.

Bengal captain Manoj Tiwary was purchased by Kolkata Knight Riders for $475,000 after starting with a base price of $100,000.

Australian discard Brad Hodge attracted some interest and was bought by Team Kochi $425,000 after being stiff competition from Chennai Super Kings.

England's Eoin Morgan, starting with $200,000, was sold to Kolkata Knight Riders for $350,000

Uncapped Australian batsman Aaron Finch was sold to Delhi Daredevils for $300,000 for three times his reserve price and his compatriot Calum Ferguson was sold at the same price to Sahara Pune Warriors.

Rajasthan Royals managed to secure the services of England's T20 captain Paul Collingwood for $250,000.

Sri Lanka's Chamara Kapugedara started with a base price of $100,000 but was unsold so was Tamim Iqbal from Bangladesh.
17:31   Chawla sold to Punjab for $900,000
Sri Lanka's spin wizard Muttiah Muralitharan was pick of the spinners when he was bought by Team Kochi for $1million.

Muralitharan, the highest wicket-taker in Tests and ODIs, started with a base price of $300,000, but attracted huge interest from a few teams before Kochi stole the show.

Piyush Chawla came a close second when he was retained by Kings XI Punjab for $900,000 for nine time his base price.

R Ashwin was also retained by champions Chennai Super Kings, who went all out with a massive bid of $850,000 against his base price of $100,000.

Deccan Chargers managed to keep Pragyan Ojha for $500,000, while Murali Kartik starting at $200,000 found no takers.

New Zealand's Nathan McCullum was sold for his base price of $100,000 to Sahara Pune Warriors, while Team Kochi snapped up Ramesh Powar for $180,000.

Interestingly, Graeme Swann, rated as the top spinner in world cricket, surprisingly did not attract any interest and was unsold. Similarly was the case with Sri Lanka's mystery spinner Ajantha Mendis.

"The interest in England players is based on their availability. South Africa, New Zealand are the only countries other than India, whose player would be available for the full season in 2010 and 2011 and that is why their players are getting a good bid," an official from Delhi Daredevils said.
17:07   Ishant gets only $450,000
South Africa's pace sensation Dale Steyn got the highest bid among the fast bowlers when he was purchased by Deccan Chargers for $1.2 million.

16:23   Zinta rues missing out on signing Irfan
Delhi Daredevils justified the purchase of Irfan Pathan for a massive $1.9 million despite the all-rounder having missed the entire domestic season because of injuries.

The 26-year-old last played for India in 2009 after which he was sacked following a string of poor performances with the ball and fitness issues.

"Pathan's price is subjective. He brings two skills with him which is batting and bowling. So paying $1.9 million dollars for an all-rounder like him is fair," said PB Vanchi, director of GMR Sports, owners of Delhi Daredevils.

"He can be a match-winner," Vanchi added.

Preity Zinta, co-owner of Kings XI Punjab, also rued out missing out on the Baroda all-rounder.

"He is a great guy. He won us a lot of matches," Zinta said.

10:45   The auction process
The auction will be a private auction and will be conducted by Richard Madley. Each player will be presented individually for auction.

The bidding will commence at the reserve price for that player contained the in player register.

The maker of the highest bid for each player will secure the player at that price.

The price will bid will be the player's fee for each IPL season, including the Champions League T20 tournament if the team qualifies.

The franchises cannot make bids which would take them beyond the remaining balance of their salary cap.

The players will be grouped into sets with the marquee players being auctioned first.

A random draw will take place to determine the order in which players are auctioned within set.

Any player who is not bid for when presented for auction may be re-presented at the discretion of IPL once the initial sets have been concluded.

This procedure may be varied by IPL when the auction reaches the stage at which the number of franchises with resources left to bid has significantly reduced.
