Live Scorecard:

The news is out!

Play has been abandoned for the day.

Earlier, it was announced that the match will restart at 06.30 pm (local time).

A maximum of 13.4 overs was to be played, with the possibility of play being extended till 07.30 (local time).

However, with a drizzle coming down again officials had no option but to call of the day's play.

20:33

England have made 127 for two after 49.2 overs.

And bad light means tea has been taken early.

While Trott and Pietersen ensured consolidation for the home team in the session, it was a frustrating period for the visitors.

Zaheer Khan was exceptional. But there was no one to back up his efforts.

With Zaheer off the field, the Indian bowling attack suddenly looks pedestrian.

Live Scorecard:

England have got into some batting rhythm now.

With the lights deteriorating, the umpires have asked for the floodlights to be switched on.

A drizzle has forced the umpires to ask the players to leave the field.

England have made 127 for two after 49.2 overs, when play was stopped.

Trott was unbeaten on 58 and Pietersen on 22.

Live Scorecard:

Zaheer is back for his third spell.

He has undoubtedly been the best Indian bowler so far.

He bowls for the first time from the pavilion end, having bowled both his opening spells from the nursery end.

It's a maiden. The bowler is unlucky in his second over. An edge off Trott  (on 32) flies between Dhoni and Dravid to the fence.

It was the first runs in 34 balls off Zaheer's bowling.

England reach the 100-run mark in the same over.

Harbhajan comes in to replace Praveen Kumar (14-4-40-0) in the next over and concedes just three runs.

Zaheer bowls only three balls in his next ball and goes off the field with a muscle strain. Kumar to complete the over.

A lovely drive through covers by Trott in Harbhajan's next over brings up the 50-run stand for the third wicket.

Trott reaches his seventh Test fifty in Harbhajan's next over.

England 117 for two after 45 over.
19:12
Live Scorecard:

It is the sixth time in 11 face-offs that Zaheer has accounted for Strauss.

Kevin Pietersen has come in to replace his captain.

He gets off the mark off the 14th ball he faces.

Zaheer (4-4-0-1) is replaced by Kumar in the 31st over and Trott welcomes the latter with a boundary past point.

England 83 for two after 34 overs.
18:29

Live Scorecard:

Strauss has become Zaheer's victim again.

The seamer had the England captain caught by Ishant at fine-leg.

Strauss made 22. England 62 for two after 25 overs.

18:23
Live Scorecard:

Strauss and Trott continue the England revival after lunch.

The hosts have now crossed the 50-run mark.

England 62 for one after 24 overs.

17:30
Live Scorecard:

Ishant continues in the 17th and Trott deflects the last ball to the fine leg fence to get his first boundary.

While it took Strauss 48 balls to score his first boundary, Trott achieved the same in just 14 deliveries, Ishant being the kind bowler on both the occasions.

Harbhajan Singh comes in to replace Kumar (2-0-10-0) in the 19th over and he generates turn immediately, only to see Dravid putting down Trott at first slip.

A difficult chance that. A chance nonetheless.

Ishant is reintroduced from the other end, replacing Kumar (9-4-18-0).

England reach 43 for one at lunch.

17:08
Live Scorecard:

Jonathan Trott has come in to bat following the dismissal of Cook.

India make their first bowling change in the 15th over. Ishant Sharma comes in to replace Zaheer (whose first spell makes for an interesting reading 7-3-9-1).

And in the fifth ball of that over, Strauss helped himself to a boundary over third man, his first having faced a whopping 48 balls.

England 30 for one after 16 overs.
16:45
Live Scorecard:

Cook and Strauss continue with their strategy.

The Indian seamers have generated some seam and swing but the two English openers remained largely untroubled in the first 10 overs.

However, Zaheer strikes in the last ball of his sixth over, trapping Cook plumb in front.

Cook made 12. England 19 for one after 11 overs.

16:29
Live Scorecard:

Cook and Strauss are expectedly playing it safe here.

Negotiating the early overs is vital, considering the overcast conditions.

Dhoni, on his part, is doing everything to get an early breakthrough. The Indian captain has set a pretty attacking field, with three slip and a gully.

England 18 without loss after seven overs.

16:15
Live Scorecard:

Praveen Kumar bowls the second over. He is generating some swing.

Alastair Cook survives some anxious moments. It's a maiden. So is Zaheer's second over.

England haven't opened their account after three overs.

However, in the first ball of Kumar's second, Cook gets the first runs, a boundary, courtesy a poor effort by Harbhajan.

He survives a loud leg before shout in the fifth ball. And takes a single off the sixth.

England five without loss after four overs.
16:03
Live Scorecard:

After a half-an-hour delay, we finally have a start.

Andrew Strauss and Alastair Cook come in to bat for England and it will be Zaheer Khan opening the bowling for India.

The first over is a maiden.
15:44

The teams are on expected lines.

Praveen Kumar is handpicked as India's third seam option, meaning S Sreesanth sits out.

And as rediff had reported yesterday, Abhinav Mukund will open the batting with Gautam Gambhir. Suresh Raina retains his place. So there's no Yuvraj Singh in the squad.

Teams:

England:

Andrew Strauss (captain), Alastair Cook, Jonathan Trott, Kevin Pietersen, Ian Bell, Eoin Morgan, Matt Prior, Graeme Swann, Stuart Broad, James Anderson, Chris Tremlett

India:

MS Dhoni (captain), Gautam Gambhir, Abhinav Mukund, Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman, Suresh Raina, Harbhajan Singh, Zaheer Khan, Ishant Sharma, Praveen Kumar
15:36
India has won the toss and have invited England to bat first in the opening Test at Lord's on Thursday.

Considering the overcast conditions it might just be a good toss to win.
15:35
The news out here is not very good considering heavy rain is forecast in the next few days.

It is a packed out here at Lord's. And the delay is frustrating for all.

15:17
A light drizzle had delayed the start of what is officially the 2000th Test match.

England and India will have to wait till 10.50 (local time) when the umpires will be inspecting the Lord's ground.

The Test is also the 100th between the countries.
