Clinical Pak snap Oz unbeaten run

Timeline  Refresh

21:57
Scorecard:

It is all over.

Razzaq has decided he has had enough and crashes Krejza to boundaries either side of the wicket to finish a superb win for Pakistan.

Pakistan are now placed on top of Group A and will most likely face the West Indies, while Australia may well be headed to Ahmedabad for their quarterfinal against India.
21:42
Scorecard:

Umar Akmal and Razzaq have kept a calm head about them till now. But Lee is coming back for one last burst.

Can he spark life into this match once again?

21:17
Scorecard:

Johnson banged one in the three-quarter length and Asad, who had been solid till now, fended, sending the edge behind the wicket.

Haddin missed the ball despite an extravagent dive, but Watson at first slip pouched it safely.

That wicket ended a very lively partnership with Umar Akmal, who has given a glimpse of what he can do if he develops a penchant for staying longer at the crease.

Lofting the quicks and spinners alike at will, he has raced to 30.

Shahid Afridi joined him and left him at the same speed, as he could not resist by hoist Krejza, only to hole out to Long on
20:51
Scorecard:

Like we kept stressing, it is Lee who does it for Australia with two classic balls on the corridor outside the off stump.

One more wicket here, and Australia will be truly back in the match.

The key to that lies in the other bowlers getting their act together and rallying around Lee, who now has 4/26, but has only 3 overs left in his kitty.

How is Ponting going to use him?
20:08
Scorecard:

Krejza finally comes on in the 18th over and straightaway gets good turn and bounce.

Watson continues at the other end as Pakistan trundle along untroubled, and Ponting brings a slip for Watson, making it six men in the ring.

This Aussie attack looks very ordinary when the pace battery has an off day.

Ponting might have to bring Lee back for a short burst. That seems like his only hope for a wicket here.
19:55
Scorecard:

The bowling powerplay yielded only 17 runs. But, right now, with Younis Khan untroubled by pace, and Asad Shafiq having grown in confidence, Pakistan wouldnt worry too much about run-rate.

Australia, on the other hand, will know very well that this containment means nothing as long as they dont get wickets.

The most baffling aspect has been that Ponting has now used four bowlers in the 16 overs and none of them is a spinner. Very strange, considering the slow nature of the pitch, and that his pacers have not really threatened this Pakistani top order.

Either Ponting does not trust Krejza and Co, or he has a plan that we haven't cottoned on to.
19:20
Scorecard:

It was left to Lee to get a second wicket.

Asad Shafiq twisted his ankle while completing a run and the ensuing break seems to have broken Kamran's concentration.

Lee spears one full and straight from slightly wide of the crease and Kamran was caught in his crease. He reviews the decision, but has to walk anyway, as the replays show the ball hitting the top of leg.

This match is not dead yet.
19:13
Scorecard:

In this tournament, Ricky Ponting has largely depended on his three-man pace battery to give Australia the early breakthroughs. And Lee, Tait and Johnson have delivered, taking 28 wickets in five matches.

But on Saturday against Pakistan, defending a small total, his three-chamber fast-bowling revolver misfired, with only Lee holding the right line and length consistently.

Tait was erratic as he tends to be on his off day, and Johnson, who on his day can make the ball talk, bowled wide and strayed outside the offstump far too often to trouble the Pakistani top order.

All the while, Kamran Akmal and Asad Shafiq grew in confidence as they punished everything that was wayward.

Ponting has to do something here, as these two have already knocked off a fourth of the ask.
18:51
Scorecard:

With three catches and a run out to his credit, this seems to truly be Kamran Akmal's lucky day. First a top edge landed in the no man's land behind the 'keeper. The next ball, both openers were mid pitch as a throw went wide.

Hafeez, who had bowled brilliantly, had no such luck though. A short ball from Lee hurried on to him, as he tried to work it on the on-side. the leading edge ballooned and Lee ran the full length of the pitch and dove to take a great athletic catch. The expletive laden send off he unleashed, though, could have been avoided.

Match on.
18:34
Scorecard:

Shahid Afridi sticks to the conventional opening partnership of Kamran Akmal-Mohd Hafeez as a pumped up Australia take the field. There was as huddle before they came on.

Ponting is egging his men from mid off even as he fires a couple of shadow throws, one each at striker's and non-striker's ends.

Match on here, as Lee gets things underway.
17:46
Scorecard:

With Tait and Lee at the crease and with Gul at his pomp, it was just a matter of time before the yorker-bouncer bait came into play and sure enough Gul unleashed a trademark guided missile on Lee's toes before popping one short as the confused batsman ballooned it to end Australia's innings at 176.
17:40
Scorecard:

Steve Smith has been struggling to read Afridi ever since the skipper came for his late spell, and in the 46th over, he did not react quickly to one that hurried on straight to crash into the stumps.
17:35
Scorecard:

Abdur Rehman finishing his tidy spell meant Umar Gul came back on in the 43rd over.

Though there was a hint of reverse swing, he was wayward as he went for 8 runs.

Afridi returned at the other end and tightened things up again.

In the first ball of his next over, Gul fired an inswinging yorker that any established batsman would have found difficult to keep away, let alone a tailender like Krejza.
17:13
Scorecard:

Australia have dug themselves deeper into trouble with the twin dismissals of Hussey and Mitchell Johnson. Both dismissals were due to bad shot selection.

This pitch may be behaving funny, but it did not have any role in Mike Hussey's tame dismissal.

If credit needs to be given, it has to be to Afridi for putting a short-midwicket for Abdur Rehman's slow left arm spinners.

Hussey's tentative step was neither forward nor back for a ball that pitched marginally short of good length, and looking to scoop it over the infield, Hussey finds Misbah at short midiket.

Job done, the fielder was removed as Mitchell Johnson walked in.

He did not last long, as he poked at one short and outside off stump from Razzaq to the keeper.

Australia are losing the plot here.
17:00
Scorecard:

Razzaq, who replaced Hafeez, hit his stride straightaway, setting up Clarke's fall.

First ball to Clarke was outside the off stump, just short of length. The ball kept low and Clarke missed it.

The second ball was relatively closer to the stumps, but Clarke had to come down on it late.

The third was straighter, and Clarke could only pat it tamely back to the bowler.

The frustration showed in the next ball, as he took a wild swipe at one that pitched just outside off stump and cut in from back of length. The ball did not rise to the height at which Clarke was playing for it, and snuck under the bat to clip the off bail.

Clarke never looked assured during his stay at the crease, and the dismissal was more out of frustration than anything else.

The bigger blow this wicket will cause Australia is that they will now not be able to take the powerplay before the 40th over. Had Clarke stayed, they could have done that and set the tone for the slog overs.

Now they will have to wait till Huss and Steve Smith get a good look in at this tricky pitch.

I don't know if it is Razzaq or the pitch, but he has gotten the ball to skid and kick alternately in this over to Smith.

If the pitch is deteriorating, then Pakistan will do well to wrap the Aussie tail soon as anything above 200 will be tricky.
16:48
Scorecard:

Afridi's plan in the last few overs has been quite simple. Keep the bowling tight, wicket-to-wicket and let the batsmen do all the hard work and wait for them to commit an error as the frustration mounts.

In the first ball of the 31st over, Clarke did just that. He turned one round the corner to square leg inside the circle and called White for a suicidal single.

Misbah homed in on it and fired a low throw that Kamran collected on the volley and dislodged the bails to catch White well short of his ground.

This is disaster for Australia, the only saving grace is the wicket has brought Mr Cricket to the crease. And what a story it has been for him! After all the early day ruckus, he finds himself in the middle with Australia in trouble for the first time in the tournament. Perfect.

Meanwhile, Mohammed Hafeez completes his quota with 1/26. Nothing flamboyant there, but loads of application and discipline. He kept it straight and tight, pitching it on the right lengths. 60 times. Great stuff this.

Abdul Razzaq runs in for the first time in this match in over number 35.
16:18
Scorecard:

Afridi took himself out of the attack and gave another go for Wahab, who transformed into a much improved bowler in his second spell, keeping it around middle and off.

He soon got one to pitch on middle and deviate away from Haddin, who went prodding at it and succeeded in edging it to Kamran, who has now taken is second catch.

That was a very scratchy knock from Haddin. Hats off to Afridi for keeping the faith on Wahab, and the bowler has reponded brilliantly.

Australia in a spot of bother thanks to a superb exhibition of disciplined bowling from Pakistan.

Cameron White walks in. Though the team sheet has White at 5 and Hussey at 6, this situation is just tailor-made for Mr. Cricket.

Hafeez at the other end had Clarke tied up, as Wahab continues. Pakistan have smelt blood here and are going for it.
16:06
Scorecard:

This period of play could have well seen Australia be four-down. Instead, thanks to loads of luck, they are 83/2.

Ponting chopped one from Afridi, as the ball crashed into Kamran Akmal's pads.

Haddin was dropped at square leg and Michael Clarke inside edged one past the stumps as soon as he arrived.

All these situations, however, were created because Afridi wrested the initiative soon after the bowling powerplay, which had seen Australia almost double their 10 over score.

As soon as the powerplay was over, Afridi introduced Hafeez and switched ends for himself as Pakistan put the skids back on Australia.

Both Hafeez and him kept it wicket-to-wicket, as the Aussie batsmen -- espcially the out of form Ponting -- struggled to get them away.

The only problem for Pakistan from here on will be the erratic Wahab Riaz. Either he has to get his act together soon, or Afridi hsa to look elsewhere to fill a portion of the youngster's quota.
15:55
Scorecard:

Kamran Akmal took a catch, okay!

Hafeez pitched one on middle and turned it away from Ponting, who looked to guide it to third man. Akmal gathered the ball and appealed. The on field umpire said not out.

And Hafeez, even before Afridi could come in, asked for a review.

The replays showed a huge edge as the ball precariously perched itself in the webbing of Kamran's gloves.

This also shows how referrals can show you up if you nick such a big one and stand your ground.
15:40
Scorecard:

As soon as the change bowlers came in, Ponting and Haddin have looked to increase the tempo.

Overs number 11 to 15 yielded 2, 8, 6, 12, 3 for a total of 31 from the bowling powerplay.

Wahab has been very erratic, getting the length right but straying on the batsmen's legs more often. He was taken for 20 runs in his two overs in this period. This also included a nasty lifter that caught Ponting by surprise, but also caught a thick edge to rocket over the ropes behind the keeper.

The standout shot of the period, however, was also from Ponting, as he crashed a scorching cover drive from a fuller delivery from Wahab in the same over.

Afridi brings on Mohammed Hafeez and himself replaces Wahab at the other end.
15:23
Scorecard:

Haddin has neatly mixed aggression with caution till now. He has looked to attack the left arm spinner whenever he has strayed on to his pads.

Ponting has also started with caution and barring a couple of running mix ups, there has not been much problem for this pair as they have gone to 36/0 in 10.

A huge roar greets Afridi as his name is announced over the public system. He rushes through his first over without incident and brings on the exciting left arm pacer, Wahab Riaz.

14:58
Scorecard:

Gul, who in his previous over had given the team a bit of scare by pulling up before his first ball, pitched one on good length outside the off stump.

As Watson drove, the ball cut inside sharply off the seam to hit the top of offstump. Texbook stuff this is...

Ponting comes in.

14:53
Scorecard:

After a tight first over from Umar Gul, Afridi brought on left arm spinner Abdur Rehman for the second over.

His first ball was on Watson's pads and was crashed past mid on for four.

The second rapped Watson on his pads and the animated Kamran went up in a full throated appeal, joined by the bowler. The ball seemed to be going down leg, but Afridi, probably carried away by the bowler-'keeper duo's enthusiasm, went for a review.

The replays showed the ball was hitting the outside of the leg stump, which gives the on-field umpire the chance to uphold his original decision.

Pakistan have wasted their first review here.

BTW, whoever loses this match will most likely play India in the Quarterfinal.
14:21
Scorecard:

An unchanged Australia have won the toss and elected to bat.

Pakistan have left out Shoaib, and kept the promising Wahab Riaz in.

Umer Akmal comes back into the side.

13:02
The Pakistan team has been practicing out in the middle for some time now. After a long time, Shoaib, who has announced his retirement, turned up just now and is bowling at full steam. The Pakistani press does not think he will figure in the XI today though.
