Pakistan ease past lacklustre WI, in semis

Timeline  Refresh

Pakistan vs WI Scorecard:

Pakistan scored an empathic 10-wicket win in the first quarter-final at the Sher-e-Bangla stadium in Mirpur.

The former champions reached their target (113) without losing a wicket and with a whopping 175 balls (29.1 overs) to spare.

Mohammad Hafeez was unbeaten on 61 and giving him company was Kamran Akmal on 49, and the duo's partnership was Pakistan's highest for the opening wicket in the tournament.

Pakistan's win kept the prospect of a mouth-watering semi-final against arch rivals India in Mohali (March 30) in tact. India plays three-time defending champions Australia in the second quarter-final on Thursday.

It was only Pakistan's third win (in nine matches) over West Indies in the World Cup and their very first over the Caribbeans (in five matches) in the knock out stage of an ICC event. Overall, it was Pakistan's 49th win over West Indies (against 64 defeats).

Pakistan vs WI Scorecard:

Pakistan thrashed West Indies by 10 wickets in the first quarter-final of the ICC World Cup at the Sher-e-Bangla stadium in Mirpur on Wednesday.

The win helped the 1992 champions book their berth in the semi-finals, with the possibility of a mouth-watering tie against arch-rivals India.

Chasing a modest target (113), Pakistan raced home with a whopping 175 balls to spare.

Mohammad Hafeez remained unbeaten on 61 and giving him company was Kamran Akmal on 49.
Pakistan vs WI Scorecard:

Mohammad Hafeez has registered his eighth ODI fifty.

A boundary off Ravi Rampaul helped him reach the landmark. He celebrated the same with another.

It is his second half century against the West Indies and his first of the World Cup.
Pakistan vs WI Scorecard:

The match is inching towards an early finish.

Hafeez and Akmal are talking boundaries now.

Hafeez in particular looks to be in a hurry.

The crowd is loving every bit of it. They had been rooting for a Pakistani win before the match commenced.
Pakistan vs WI Scorecard:

Kieron Pollard has dropped Kamran Akmal at point. What more, the ball finds its way to the fence.

Poor Roach.

He is unlucky again as Devon Thomas drops Hafeez in his next over.

Young Devendra Bishoo replaces Rampual in the attack.

And his first over is a maiden, a relief for West Indies.

Darren Sammy has replaced Roach at the other end. He also bowls a maiden.

After 13 dot balls, Hafeez dispatches Bishoo to the fence twice in the space of four balls.
Pakistan vs WI Scorecard:

Welcome back!

A cracking start to Pakistan innings, Mohammad Hafeez has helped himself to a couple of boundaries in Kemar Roach's opening over.

The first is a cut shot over point and the second is past mid-on. Two great shots to begin with.

Kamran Akmal joins the party, hitting Ravi Rampaul's second delivery to the backward point boundary.
Pakistan vs WI Scorecard:

Shahid Afridi picks up his fourth wicket, 21st of the tournament, as West Indies is dismissed for 112.

Afridi has cleans up Ravi Rampaul (0) to ensure West Indies manage to play just 43.3 overs of their stipulated quota.

Shivnarine Chanderpaul is left stranded on 44.
Pakistan vs WI Scorecard:

Kemar Roach's resistance has eventually ended.

Abdul Razzaq has had him caught at midwicket by Younis Khan.

Roach made 16 and put on 40 runs for the ninth wicket with Chanderpaul.
Pakistan vs WI Scorecard:

Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Kemar Roach are adding some valuable runs for the ninth wicket.

While it may not be enough to save the day for the West Indies, it will help give their total a semblance of respectability.

Roach is batting better most of the West Indies top order.

Younis drops him at first slip (again) off Riaz and Roach celebrates by hitting a boundary towards midwicket, the shot ensuring WI reach the 100-run mark in the 37th over.
Pakistan vs WI Scorecard:

Roach has helped himself to a boundary backward of point.

And Chanderpaul has a reprieve, Younis Khan dropping him at first slip.

Younis has now dropped two catches at the same position.

Not that West Indies has managed to take advantage of the same.
Pakistan vs WI Scorecard:

Darren Sammy hasn't troubled the scorers much. Saeed Ajmal traps him plumb in front.

Three balls later, Ajmal rattles Devendra Bishoo's (0) stumps.

West Indies in dire straits now.
Pakistan vs WI Scorecard:

A six by Chanderpaul off Ajmal.

Now this is interesting.

However, the joy is shortlived as Afridi strikes again, having Kieron Pollard (1) caught behind.

The Pakistani captain takes his third wicket of the match, and 20th of the tournament, in the same over trapping Devon Thomas (0) plumb in front.

Pakistan vs WI Scorecard:

WI has crawled to the 50-run mark in the 21st over.

However, they cannot celebrate.

Shahid Afridi has struck, having Sarwan caught by Umar Akmal.

WI lose their fourth wicket. Afridi gets his 18th wicket of the tournament.

Sarwan's 68-ball 24 was inclusive of two boundaries.
Pakistan vs WI Scorecard:

Shahid Afridi is coming in to bowl, in the 17th over replacing Riaz (3-0-15-0).

A huge roar from the crowd announces his arrival.

And he misses out on another wicket as Sarwan is dropped by Gul at extra cover.
Pakistan vs WI Scorecard:

One run scored in 20 balls during a power play isn't a great statistic.

But WI don't seem too bothered. They have lost early wickets and can hardly afford to lose more.

Sarwan ensures some relief though, with a couple of boundaries off Wahab Riaz, the first one at fine-leg and the second through extra cover.

The first of those happened to be Windies' first boundary since the third over (in 10 overs to be precise).
Pakistan vs WI Scorecard:

It is up to the veterans Sarwan and Chanderapul now to do the repair work.

The Bangladesh fans are happy that West Indies has their backs to the wall.

A Bangladeshi friend here in Mirpur tells me his countrymen are supporting Pakistan because WI got them all out for 50 here and also failed to beat England, a win that would have helped Bangladesh qualify for the knock outs.

Very emotional reasons one must say.

But in this part of the world cricket is all about emotions.

Wahab Riaz replaces Gul (5-1-11-1) in the 11th over.

Pakistan vs WI Scorecard:

The experienced Ramnaresh Sarwan has been promoted to no.3, ahead of the promising Darren Bravo.

And he survives a loud appeal for caught behind off Gul.

The bowler keeps on appealing for a long time but umpire Billy Bowden is convinced. The Pakistan captain doesn't want to waste a referral here.

However, Mohammad Hafeez strikes in his third over, trapping Smith (7) leg before.

Two balls later, Hafeez gets another leg before decision in his favour, the victim this time is young Darren Bravo (0).

WI go for a referral though to no avail.
Pakistan vs WI Scorecard:

Devon Smith cuts Umar Gul's first delivery to the point for a boundary.

Gul responds with a leg before appeal two balls later, but the ball is clearly going down the leg.

Chris Gayle too survives a leg before appeal off Hafeez before dispatching him to the midwicket fence.

Gayle helps himself to another boundary in Gul's second over, this time over mid-off.

However, Gul has his revenge two balls later, Gayle paying the price for his extravagance, getting caught by Shahid Afridi.

Live score: West Indies vs Pakistan

We have to put a good total and come back and defend it," reasoned Sammy, adding, "We are much more comfortable in setting a total.

"The bowling line up can defend it."

Shahid Afridi, his opposite number, seemed unperturbed with the toss loss.

"Toss doesn't give any difference," he said, adding, "We bowled first against Australia as well.

"We will carry on with the same attitude."

Teams:

West Indies:

The moment captain Darren Sammy got it right with the coin, he had no hesitation in opting to bat first.
