India total 346 for five on Day One at Eden

India has ended Day One of the second Test at Eden Gardens on 346 for five (87.3 overs). 

West Indies hit back with two late wickets. 

VVS Laxman was unbeaten on 73 when the stumps were drawn, with nightwatchman Ishant Sharma (0) getting caught behind off Roach in the final ball of the day.

Kraigg Brathwaitte has cleaned up Rahul Dravid against the run of play. 

Dravid's 207-ball 119 was inclusive of nine hits to the fence and two over it.

Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman have done a terrific job for India. 

The two have put on 113 runs so far.

Rahul Dravid registered his 36th Test century to put India in firm control of the second Test at the Eden Gardens.

 

Dravid reached the landmark with a boundary off Kemar Roach, which also brought up India's 300-run mark.

 

It's Dravid's 5th hundred in 2011, and have crossed Cook's 927 to become second highest run getting in 2011 Tests.

 

At the end of 76 overs India were 305-6. Dravid is on 103, while Laxman is on 48.

Rahul Dravid has now entered the nervous ninties as India take control of the second Test.

 

Dravid has combined well with VVS Laxman, who is keeping the scoreboard ticking at a brisk pace.

 

Laxman, looked at ease in the middle as he too is closing in on another half-century.

 

At the end of 73 overs, India were 287-3. Dravid is on 91, while Laxman is on 44.

Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman have combined well for India putting up another decent partnership.

 

Rahul Dravid has been in the thick of things picking up singles and doubles to keep the scoreboard ticking.

 

He also had a close run in when he made the ground just in time. At the end of 21 overs, India were 233-3. Dravid is on 71, while Laxman is on 13.

Indians maintained a good run rate even in the post lunch session and despite losing two wickets.

 

Going into Tea, India were 212-3, with Dravid on 62 alongwith VVS Laxman who is on one.

 

India lost the wickets of Gautam Gambhir and Sachin Tendulkar, but Rahul Dravid completed his 62nd half-century to keep Indian hopes alive for a big score.

 

The West Indies bowling was better as compared to their morning session's performance, but there was much left to be desired.

 

While Gambhir went for a delivery, which he could have left it, Tendulkar hit a short delivery straight to the fielder, much to the disappointment of the Kolkata crowd.

 

It will be interesting to see how India pick their game in the post tea session.

For all the Tendulkar fans waiting to see a 100th hundred will have to wait for the second innings as the Master Balster is on his way back after being caught at short cover by Marlon Samuels for 38.

 

A short delivery from Bishoo, but Tendulkar couldn't clear the fielder and ended up giving a simple catch to Samuels.

 

Dravid meanwhile is holding the fort for India with a patient 57. At the end of 52 overs India were 206-3. Dravid is joined by VVS Laxman, who is yet to open his account.

Rahul Dravid completed yet another half-century as India continued to maintain a good run rate in the post-lunch session.

 

Dravid completed his 62nd half-cenutry with a single off Kemar Roach -- his 13th vs West Indies.

 

Sachin Tendulkar, who walked in after Gambhir's dismissal, has settled in nicely and playing the spinners and pacers at ease.

 

At the end of 45th over India were 188-2. Dravid is on 50, while Tendulkar is on 27.

Fidel Edwards, who has been the pick of the bowlers for West Indies struck, when he had Gautam Gambhir caught at short cover for 65.

 

Gambhir chased a wide delivery, couldn't keep it down and was safely pouched by Barath.

 

Tendulkar walks in with a loud cheer from the crowd at the Eden. Edwards would love to have Sachin back in the hut cheaply.

 

Edwards seem to have a gameplan for the Master Blaster as he is peppering him with short deliveries.

 

Tendulkar gets off the mark with a boundary on the leg side, which also brings India's 150-run mark.

 

India were 153-2 after 35 overs.

The story hasn't changed much as Gambhir and Dravid continue their charge against a hapless Windies attack.

 

Dravid is just 100-runs away from the 13,000-run mark, while Gambhir is looking more and more fluent in the middle.

 

Fidel Edwards has been the pick of theb olwers for the visitors so far, bowling at good pace.

 

At the end of 33 overs, India were 147-1. Gambhir is on 64, while Dravid is on 41.

Gautam Gambhir completes his half-century as India is managing a rood run rate.

 

To add to West Indies' woes, even Rahul Dravid is scoring at a brisk pace. The duo have put on a 63-run stand so far, for the second wicket.

 

Going in at lunch India were 132-1 from 28 overs.

 

Guess Sachin Tendulkar will have to wait for his chance as none of the West Indies bowlers look like picking up a wicket.

 

The wicket too has been flat without any movement for the bowlers. Gambhir is going strong on 57, while Dravid is on 33.

Indians have maintained the momentum despite Sehwag's dismissal as Gambhir brings India's 100-runs with a boundary off Marlon Samules.

 

Indians have mainted a run rate of more than 4 through out the innings as West Indies now introduce spin from both the ends.

 

Pacers have been disappointing so far leaking runs and they would hope that spinners can do the job on a slow track.

 

And as we speak, Bishoo manages to get the edge off Dravid's bat, but the ball falls short of the slip fielder.

 

At the end of 22 overs, India were 105-1. Dravid is on 20, while Gambhir is on 43.

West Indies finally managed to get the much-needed breakthrough as he removes Virender Sehwag, who as looking to take the game away from the visitors.

 

The drinks interval seemed to have worked as Sammy induced a false stroke from the Indian opener and was caught at straightish midwicket by Adrian Barath.

 

Sehwag was back in the hut for a 33-ball 38 with with eight hits to the fence.

 

At the end of 13 overs, India were 72-1. Gambhir is on 26 alongwith Rahul Dravid who is on six.

Openers Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag are off to a flier as the duo have put on a 50-run stand for the second consecutive Test.

 

Sehwag brought up India's 50-run mark with a slog over mid-on's head to help himself to another boundary.

 

Next up short and wide, Sehwag helps himself to another boundary. And there you go, Sehwag does it again -- third boundary off the over as Sehwag smashes a length ball over midwicket.

 

West Indies on the other hand have been guilty of giving too many boundary balls in the first hour. The only plus point for West Indies, they managed to hit Sehwag on the head -- rest has been disappearing to boundaries.

Indians are off to a flying start after winning the toss and electing to bat first on a green top at the Eden Gardens.

 

West Indies bowlers, especially Darren Sammy have been guilty of giving too many boundary balls to the Indian openers.

 

Six fours in five overs as Sehwag creams one through the offside for another boundary.

 

Couple of balls later, Edwards is guilty of bowling one short, as Shewag smashes the second boundary off the over.

 

At the end of five overs, India were 34-0. Gambhir is on 10, while Sehwag is going strong on 22.

West Indies players are sporting a black armband in tribute for the accident in St Lucia. What's surpring to see is Eden is empty.

 

It's 50th Test for Fidel Edwards, who has been right on the money so far. But just as we speak, Gambhir creams one through the offside for the first boundary of the Indian innings.

 

India 4-0 after first over.

India have won the toss and have elected to bat first in the second Test vs West Indies at the Eden Gardens.

 

MS Dhoni reckons the pitch will slow down eventually and hence he is going in with the same side.

 

West Indies, meanwhile, Kemar Roach comes in for Ravi Rampaul, who is struggling with an upset stomach. Adrian Barath too finds a place in the side.

 

India won the first Test in Delhi by eight wickets to take a 1-0 lead in the series.
