India end the day on top

Well umpires have called the day off after light deteriorated with India finishg the day on top.

 

First the India amassed a massive 631-7 then they picked up two quick wickets to drive home the advantage.

 

Day 2 belonged to MS Dhoni -- who completed his fifth century -- and VVS Laxman, who completed his 17th century to lead the charge.

 

Then Umesh Yadav picked up Adrian Barath and R Ashwin removed Brathwaite. West Indies end the day on 34-2 from 12 overs.

Play has been suspended at the Eden Gardens after West Indies lost both their openers cheaply.

 

Umesh Yadav first removed Adrian Barath for one in his first over, then Ashwin removed Kraigg Brathwaite for 17.

 

Brathwaite came forward to defend but was beaten by the flight, the ball spun into him and lobbed off the pad to Gambhir, who took an easy catch.

 

West Indies at the end of 12 overs were 34-2.

India after declaring at 631-7, struck early with Umesh Yadav sending Adrian Barath back for just one run.

 

Yadav bowled a brlliant out-swinger at 140 clicks, got the outside edge of Barath's bat and was safely pouched by Virender Sehwag in the slips.

 

West Indies were 3-1 after 1.2 overs.

India finally declared at 631-7 with VVS Laxman carrying his bat through the innings at 176.

 

It means West Indies will have to bat a minimum of 24 overs, light permitting.

 

Earlier, MS Dhoni stroked a brilliant 144 as the duo put on 224-runs for the seventh wicket.

So the players are back on the field it will be Kemar Roach who will take the ball.

 

Laxman takes a single off the first ball to get the innings going. Next up MS Dhoni doesn't waste anytime and smashes Roach over the ropes -- lookes like he is in One-day mode.

 

But Roach has the last laugh as he finds the edge of Dhoni's bat -- and this time its not a no-ball.

 

Dhoni was back in the hut for 144, with 10 fours and five sixes.

 

At the end of 149 overs India were 620-7. Laxman is on 169, alongwith R Ashwin who is yet to open his account.

A quick-fire century from skipper MS Dhoni and a patient innings from VVS Laxman ensured that India crossed the 600-run mark at the Eden Gardens.

 

Going in at the tea interval, India were 613-6 with Dhoni on 138, alongwith Laxman who is on 168.

 

This is now the highest score at this ground.

 

The duo have put on a 217-run stand for the seventh wicket to ensure that India are in the driver's seat in the second Test.

MS Dhoni completes his much-awaited century as India continue to amass runs against West Indies at the Eden Gardens.

 

It was his fifth century overall -- first after 33 innings -- first against West Indies and second at Eden Gardens.

 

Dhoni reached the landmark with single off Kraigg Brathwaite. At duo have put on more than 150-run stand and will now look to bat West Indies out of the contest.

 

At the end of 142 over, India were 565-6. Dhoni is on 103, while Laxman is on 157.

VVS Laxman reached another landmark as the champion batsman reached 150 with a single off Marlon Samules.

 

Dhoni on the other hand is closing in on much-awaited Test century much to the delight of Indian fans.

 

At the end of 139 overs India were 552-6. Dhoni is on 94, while Laxman is on 153

MS Dhoni is leading India's charge after lunch, taking on West Indies bowlers and hitting boundaries at regular interval.

 

Dhoni has been particularly severe on Fidel Edward, who was smashed for couple of boundaries in the same over.

 

Indian skipper brought up his half-century with a single off Darren Sammy -- his fourth this year. After completeing his half-century, Dhoni decided to open his shoulders smashing Samuels for a maximum.

 

He brought up India's 500-run mark with a boundary off Bishoo

 

Laxman at the other end, continues to amass singles, with the field well spread out. None of the Windies bowles so far have looked threatening and Indians look to bat just once in the Test match.

 

At the end of 125 overs India were 503-6. Dhoni is on 68, while Laxman is on 130.

Finally some play Eden Gardens as Laxman and Dhoni walk out in the middle. Fidel Edwards has the ball in hand.

 

Second ball off the over, Edwards digs one short outside off stump and Dhoni is more than happy to pull the ball for the first boundary after lunch.

 

Couple of balls later, it was Laxman's turn to pull the ball so hit the second boundary off the over. At the end of 110 over, India were 445-6. Laxman is on 112, while Dhoni is on 28.

Bad light has stopped play at a hazy Eden Gardens as head for a early lunch.

With the Sammy re-introducing Fidel Edwards, umpire Rod Tucker decided to check his light meter and felt that the light has deteriorated.

 

So the players head for an early lunch with India on 433-6. Laxman, who completed his 17th Test century is on 106, while skipper Dhoni is on 22.

After Rahul Dravid, it was VVS Laxman's turn to register a century as he flicked one off Sammy to reach the milestone.

 

It was Laxman's 17th Test century overall -- fifth at the Eden Garden as India look to press the initiative.

 

MS Dhoni is at the crease, who is looking to get the scoreboard moving.

 

At the end of 102 overs, India were 417-6. Laxman is on 100, while Dhoni is on 14

West Indies bowlers have troubled Yuvraj Singh in the morning and their persistence paid off, when skipper Darren Sammy trapped the left-hander in front of the stumps for 25.

 

Sammy bowled a full length delivery as Yuvi tried to play across the line by, missing the ball compeltely -- a loud shout and umpire raises finger in affirmation.

 

India were 396-6 after 98 overs. Laxman is on 94, alongwith MS Dhoni, who is yet to open his account.

VVS Laxman and Yuvraj Singh were off to a steady start on a hazy morning. West Indies bowlers -- Fidel Edwards and Kemar Roach have kept it tight both bowling a tight line.

 

Yuvraj Singh got off the mark with a punch through point to get the Indian innings rollingo n Day 2 off Roach.

 

Laxman on the other hand, flicked Edwards for his bnoundary off the over. Edwards has been building up a bit of steam as he finds the edge of Yuvi's bat, but the ball flies over the slips for a boundary.

 

India at the end of 96th over were 384-5. Laxman is on 86, while Yuvraj is on 21.

Indian will look to maintain the pressure on the West Indies as Day 2 commences in a short while from now.

 

The visitors did have a foot in the door in the final session, when they picked up two quick wickets, but Yuvraj Singh and MS Dhoni will be key to India's progress.

 

VVS Laxman is going strong on 73 and Eden crowd will be hoping to see yet another century from the Hyderabad batsman.

 

West Indies on the other hand, will look to make the new ball count and come up with a better display in the opening hour.
