India edge England in Mohali, seal series 3-0

MS Dhoni, with an unbeaten 35, and Ravindra Jadeja, with 26 not out, helped India edge England by five wickets in the third one-dayer at the PCA Stadium in Mohali on Thursday. 

The duo's unbroken 65-run partnership (off 46 balls) for the sixth wicket helped the home team take an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five-match series. 

The Indian captain sealed the issue with successive boundaries off Bresnan. 

Chasing a formidable 299 to win, India won with four balls to spare.

A few quick wickets have meant the third ODI will go down to the wire. 

The hosts, cruising at one stage, committed hara kiri losing wickets in a clutter. 

After 47 overs, India has made 269 for five, needing a further 30 runs to win.

Ajinkya Rahane has fallen nine short of a maiden hundred. Finn has him caught by Cook at mid-off. 

Rahane's 104-ball 91 was inclusive of six hits to the fence. 

Tim Bresnan is brought back into the attack in the next over and strikes fifth ball, having Suresh Raina caught by Pietersen at cover before he could open his account. 

India reduced to 217 for four after 39 overs.

A spectacular catch by Kevin Pietersen at covers ends Gambhir's (58) innings and a 111-run second wicket stand. 

Gambhir's 60-ball knock was inclusive of three hits to the fence and one over it. 

Steven Finn strikes immediately after the second drinks break. Virat Kohli comes out to bat and almost hits back to the bowler.

20:55   Gautam Gambhir registers 27th ODI fifty

Gambhir hasn't hit many boundaries in bis innings. But he has paced it well, at almost a run-a-ball. 

His first six, at long-off off Swann, helps him record his 27th ODI fifty. It is his sixth half century against England. 

The shot also helps raise the 100-run partnership for the second wicket. 

India coasting along comfortably at 189 for one after 33 overs.

Gambhir and Rahane have managed to build on the platform that the opening wicket had provided for India. 

The two have put together 73 runs for the second wicket at more than a run-a-ball. Swann and Patel have failed to find the breakthrough that Cook expected them to and consequently the England captain has got Dernbach back into the attack.

20:06   Ajinkya Rahane registers second ODI fifty

India has not been able to take advantage of the bowling powerplay - just 31 runs coming off those five overs. 

However, a single off Swann helps Rahane reach his second ODI fifty.

The hosts have made 106 for one after 20 overs.
19:52   Bresnan provides England the breakthrough

Samit Patel comes in to bowl in the 11th over, replacing Steven Finn (5-0-20-0). He concedes five singles in his first over.

It is twin spin for England as Graeme Swann replaces Jade Dernbach (3-0-20-0) in the 14th over. He concedes just four runs first up but is replaced by Bresnan after just one over as England opt to take the bowling powerplay in the 16th over.

Bresnan provides England a much needed breakthrough, trapping Parthiv (38) leg before plumb in front with his fourth ball.

Gautam Gambhir comes out to bat and begins with a boundary, first ball, off Bresnan.

With Bresnan (3-0-21-0) failing to impress, Cook hands the ball to Jade Dernbach in the eighth over. 

The move backfires as Dernbach concedes nine runs in his first over, Rahane helping himself to his third boundary in the over.

Ajinkya Rahane and Parthiv Patel come out to bat for India and Steve Finn will start the proceedings with the ball for England.

Six runs come off the opening over, with Parthiv hitting the fifth ball to the fence. Tim Bresnan takes the second new ball and he concedes four runs first up. Finn gives away only three runs in his second over.

A spectacular unbeaten 98 by Jonathan Trott and a whirlwind 70 not out by Samit Patel helped England to a formidable 298 for four against India in the third ODI at the PCA stadium in Mohali on Thursday. 

Trott's 116-ball knock, his 15th ODI half century, was inclusive of eight hits to the fence, while Patel's 43-ball knock, his first ODI fifty, was inclusive of seven boundaries and two maximums. The duo put together an unbroken stand of 103 (off just 71 balls) for the fifth wicket.  

A whopping 91 runs came off the last 10 overs.

Kevin Pietersen was another major contributor with 64, putting 101 runs for the third wicket with Trott. 

India has a tough ask ahead of it.

A spectacular unbeaten 98 by Jonathan Trott and a whirlwind 64 by Samit Patel helped England to a formidable 291 for four against India in the third ODI at the PCA stadium in Mohali on Thursday. 

Trott's 116-ball knock, his 15t ODI half century, was inclusive of eight hits to the fence, while Patel's 43-ball knock, his first ODI fifty, was inclusive of six boundaries and two maximums. The duo put together an unbroken stand of 103 (off just 71 balls) for the fifth wicket.  

A whopping 91 runs came off the last 10 overs.

Kevin Pietersen was another major contributor with 64, putting 101 runs for the third wicket with Trott. 

India has a tough ask ahead of it.

Samit Patel is playing a good role here, scoring his runs at a faster pace while also giving the required support to the well-settled Trott. 

Vinay Kumar replaces an ineffective Yadav (8-0-47-0) in the 43rd over and Patel hits him for successive boundaries. 

The two have put together 53 runs, off just 41 balls, for the fifth wicket.

17:10   England fail to utilise batting powerplay

The return of Praveen Kumar into the attack, in the 39th over, yields India immediate dividends. 

The seamer rattles Ravi Bopara's stumps with his first ball. Bopara's 32-ball 24 was inclusive of three boundaries. 

Samit Patel comes out to bat. The visitors haven't been able to inflict much damage on the hosts in the batting powerplay, just 30 runs come off the five PP overs.

Trott and Bopara are slowly but steadily helping England consolidate. 

The latter has survived some anxious moments early on to hold fort at one end and help Trott be the aggressor.

Pietersen's 61-ball 64 was inclusive of nine hits to the fence and his 101-run (off 17 overs) partnership for the third wicket with Trott build a foundation for the English innings. 

A single off Jadeja helps Trott reach a well-deserved half century.

It is his 15th ODI half century, his second against India - after his 63 at Sophia Gardens last month.

16:30   Jadeja ends Pietersen's blitzkrieg

Ravindra Jadeja (3-0-18-0) has proved to be ineffective so far. And so is Umesh Yadav. 

R Ashwin has bowled a tad better, but that is not saying much. The ordinary bowling has helped Trott and Pietersen add 101 runs for the third wicket, at almost a run-a-ball. 

However, just as we mention this Jadeja traps Pietersen (64) plumb in front. Ravi Bopara comes out to bat.

A boundary off Jadeja, his seventh, helps Pietersen registers his 23rd ODI fifty. 

It is the 31-year-old's first half century in ODIs since scoring 59 against Ireland at Bangalore in the World Cup. 

It is KP's seventh ODI fifty against India.  He celebrates the same with successive boundaries off Yadav.

Trott and Pietersen are once again putting up a good little partnership for England. 

The two have put together more than 50 runs for the third wicket with Pietersen playing the aggressor's role.

15:27   Kohli curtails Kieswetter's flight

Virat Kohli comes in to replace Praveen Kumar (5-0-19-0) in the 11th over. It is a double bowling change for India as Umesh Yadav comes in to replace Vinay Kumar (5-1-20-1).

And the change works as Kohli strikes in the first ball off his second over, rattling Kieswetter's (36) stumps. 

Kevin Pietersen comes out to bat.

Jonathan Trott has come out to replace his captain but it is Kieswetter who cuts loose first, hitting a boundary each off Vinay and Praveen, both towards the fine leg. 

Trott gets into the act with a boundary off Vinay Kumar. Kieswetter smashes Praveen over deep midwicket for a maximum and repeats the feat off Vinay Kumar.
