India crush England to complete whitewash

India extracted revenge for their humiliation in England as they thumped the visitors by 95 runs in the fifth and final ODI in Kolkata on Tuesday, to complete a deserved 5-0 series whitewash.


Chasing a competitive 271 for victory, England were comfortably placed at 129-0 in the 21st over, before the spinners turned the tide in India's favour.

 

The Indian spinners claimed nine of the 10 wickets as England's batsman came undone on a slow wicket offering a lot of assistance to the spinners to be bowled out for 176 in 37 overs.

 

Craig Kieswetter (63 from 64 balls) and Alastair Cook (60 from 61 balls) had given their team a flying start, but the rest of the batsmen failed to rise to the occasion.

 

For India, Ravindra Jadeja was outstanding with the ball with as he took 4-33, while Ravichandran Ashwin picked up 3-28.


In the end, captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni's blazing knock of 75 from 69 balls proved vital to help India post a competitive total on a difficult track.


Jadeja was named the man of the match for his magnificent performance with the ball, while Dhoni was named man of the series for his outstanding batting and captaincy through the five matches. The Indian captain scored 212 runs in four innings without being dismissed even once.


The two teams will play each other in a one-off Twenty20 International at the same venue on Saturday.

Indian spinners have turned the game in India's favour. Indian spinners have picked six of the seven wickets that have fallen and have tighten the grip on the match.

 

After Ravindra Jadeja and R Ashwin did the early damage, part-timers Suresh Raina and Manoj Tiwary chipped in with wickets to pull the game in India's favour.

 

At the end of 35 overs England were 167-7.

England's innings is falling apart as now Johanthan Trott is making the long walk back to the pavillion after giving a simple catch to Virat Kohli in the slips.

 

England have lost four wickets in space of eight runs. At the end of 24 overs England were 138-4 with Jonny Bairstow on one alongwith Ravi Bopara, who is yet to open his account.

After Alastair Cook, it's now time for Craig Kieswetter to walk back to the pavillion after he was adjudged leg-before-wicket to Ravindra Jadeja.

 

Kieswetter, beaten by the arm ball, plants his leg right in front of the stump, misses the ball and umpire Billy Bowden had little hesitation in raising the finger.

 

In the next over, Ashwin manages to get a faint  edge off Ian Bell bat, which was brilliantly taken by MS Dhoni behind the stumps. 

 

At the end of 23 overs England were 137-3.

Varun Aaron provides the much-needed breakthrough for India as he castles Alastair Cook.

 

Aaron went round the wicket in the third over bowls a fantastic 141.7kph delivery to castle the English captain.

 

Cook was caught on the crease and the ball squeezed past the inside edge to take off stump.

 

At the end of 21st over, England were 131-1.

A brilliant opening stand has between Alastair Cook and Craig Kieswetter has put England in cruise contron chasing a stiff 271 for victory.

 

The duo were aggressive right from the outset and they were also helped by some poor bowling from the Indian bowlers.

 

Both Kieswetter and Cook reached their respective half-century in quick time as well.

 

At the end of 20 overs England were 125-0. Kieswetter is on 63, while Cook is on 54.

Craig Kieswetter and Alastrair Cook have provided a strong base for the England's run chase.

 

Kieswetter in particular has been the aggressive of the two taking on the Indian spinners and Praveen Kumar in particular.

 

Ravindra Jadeja comes on, replacing Maoj Tiwary, who gave away 13 runs off his first over.

 

At the end of 13 overs England were 82-0. Kieswetter is on 42, while Cook is on 37.

England have been off toa steady start chasing competitive 272 for victory. Craig Kieswetter  has been the aggressive of the two, taking on the Indian opening bowlers.

 

Praveen Kumar of guilty of bowling a full toss, which was taken advantage by Kieswetter to put it to a boundary.

 

At the end of seven overs England were 41-0.

Yet another magnificent performance from MS Dhoni meant that India finished with 271-8 in the stipulated 50 overs.

 

Indian openers were off to a great start before losing three quick wickets to peg back India.

 

Dhoni then alongwith Suresh Raina steadied Indian innings, before opening up against the spinners and the pacers.

 

In the end, Dhoni finished with unbeatedn on 75, with vital contributions from Ajinkya Rahane (42) and Raina (38).

 

For England Steven Finn was the most economical bowler, but it was Samit Patel who grabbed three Indian wickets for 57 runs.

MS Dhoni will be the key for India in the late overs, after Ravindra Jadeja's dismissal in the previous over.

 

Jadeja falls to a great catch from Ian Bell but credit must be given to Samit Patel too who changed the angle and the lenght of the delivery. 

 

Jadeja chipped down the track and tried to smash it, but wasn't to the pitch of the ball eventually ended up dragging the ball to mid wicket. 

 

At the end of 45 overs India were 211-6. Dhoni is on 42 alongwith R Ashwin who is on three.

Suresh Raina is the next one to go asfter being run out at the non-strikers end.

 

Raina pushed for a single towards square leg, Bopara hits the stumps at the non-strikers end again.

 

Umpire Asnani calls for the third umpire -- inital reaction of Raina seems fine.

 

However replays show that the bat had bounced up at the point of contact. Unlucky for Raina and a vital breakthrough for England.

 

At the end of 38 overs, India were 170-5. Dhoni is on 19, alongwith Ravindra Jadeja who is on 7.

Steven Finn back into the attack as India take the batting powerplay. Finn has been the pick of the England bowlers as Raina steers one towards third man for a single.

 

To MS Dhoni is right on the money. Dhoni picks up a single -- it has been a quiet over so far.

 

Suresh Raina goes for an expansive drive gets an inside egdge, lucky for him, gets a couple.

 

Finn bowls a peach of a delivery, gets an outside edge as the ball runs down to the third man boundary.

 

India were 161-4 after 36 overs. Raina is on 38, while Dhoni is on 17.

Meaker bowling his sixth over removes Manoj Tiwary, who was looking good.

 

Tiwary pushed forward to a good length ball and gets a faint edge -- a loud appeal from the bowler and the wicketkeeper and umpire Billy Bowden had little hesitation in raising his finger.

 

The Raina-Tiwary duo put on 43 runs for the fourth wicket. At the end of 29 overs India were 131-4.

Suresh Raina and Manoj Tiwary have put up a good stand, after India lost three quick wickets.

 

The last five overs have yielded 32 runs, which goes to show that once the batsman is in, it's difficult to dislodge him.

 

Swann now back into the attack as Raina dabs it down for a single. Swann then bowls a flightes delivery but Tiwary can't get it through.

 

And as we speak, Tiwary late cuts Swann for another boundary. Seven runs off the over as India were 123-3 after 27 overs.

After Finn's double strike, it's Bresnan's turn to send set Ajinkya Rahane back, courtesy a brilliant catch from Craig Kieswetter.

 

Kieswetter, who had missed a chance earlier, goes low to take a brilliant catch with one hand...England have comeback big time!!!!

 

At the end of 19 overs India were 81-3.

England finally managed to make a breakthrough as Steven Finn removing Guatam Gambhir for 38.

 

Gambhir looking to run down the ball towards the thirdman area, got an inside edge.

 

The ball is keeping a bit low at the Eden Gardens, which could come into play in the England innings.

 

Finn produces another peach of delivery as Virat Kohli pokes at a wide one. Lucky not to get an edge.

 

Next up, Kohli shoulders an incoming  ball, as the ball crashes onto the off-stump, to provide the second breakthrough off the over. Kohli was back in the hut for a duck 

 

At the end of 18 overs, India were 80-2. Rahane is on 42, along with Manoj Tiwary who is yet to open his account.

Graeme Swann comes into the attack as Indians are deal in singles at the moment.

 

Rahane, meanwhile, rocks back and smashes it for a boundary over covers fielder.

At the end of 16 overs India were 77-0.

The stands are empty at Eden Gardens -- very unusual for Kolkata. KP is out with a finger injury -- finally Bell gets a chance.

Rahane goes for a wide one, misses the ball -- lucky not to get an edge. At the end of 9 overs India were 37-0

Openers Gautam Gambhir and Ajinkya Rahane give India a steady start. Going at a run-a-ball on a pitch providing uneven bounce, the openers are in full flow. Rahane particularly looks in fine touch having already hit two boundaries. India are 17 for no loss at the end of four overs.
14:20   England win toss, to field
England captain Alastair called correctly and having won the toss, decided to field first in the fifth and final ODI in Kolkata.
India have a chance to clinch a series whitewash and avenge the defeat they tasted at the hands of the England last month.
England have to play for pride, but will be without the services of Kevin Pietersen who was injured while fielding during the fourth ODI. Bell is likely to replace Pietersen.
