Somerset beat KKR by five wickets in the humdinger

Led by brilliant counter-attacking innings from Roelf van der Merwe, Somerset beat Kolkata Knight Riders by five wickets. 

 

Chasing a competitive 162 runs for victory, van der Merwe made a brilliant 70 off 40 balls to lead the English side over the IPL giants.

 

Kolkata did fight back in the middle picking couple of wickets in quick succession, but that was not enough to stop Somerset from crossing the line.

 

Nick Compton hit the winning run, with a scoop over the fine-leg, with two balls to spare.

Shakib Al Hasan, made two crucial breakthroughs as Kolkata fightback after the match looked dead and buried.

 

Shakib, first had Peter Trego walking back to the pavillion after the latter failed to make his ground in time.

 

Couple of balls later, he picked up the dangerous van der Merwe off his own bowling. van der Merwe made a brilliant 73 off 40 balls with nine four and two sixes.

 

There was another twist in the tail, when Rajat Bhatia had James Hildreth caught by wicketkeeper Bisla for 0.

 

Somerset at the end of 15 overs were 130-4, requiring another 32 runs off 30 balls.

Roelf van der Merwe's brilliant counter-attacking cricket has put Somerset in cruise control, as he punished each and every KKR bowler.

 

None of them seems to effective for the moment as Somerset have raced on to 107-1 from 10 overs.

 

van der Merwe is on 67 off just 32 balls, while Trego is on 21, requiring 50 runs off 60 balls.

Somerset is off to a flier despite losing Chris Jones early. KKR bowlers have been below par to say the least and fielding too has been poor.

 

Roelf van der Merwe has taken the attack to the opposition, smashing KKR spinner Iqbal Abdullah and Sakib al-Hasan for sixes and fours.

 

At the end of five overs, Somerset were 58-1. Van der Merwe is on 38, while Trego is on 10.

Iqbal Abdulla comes into the attack and he strikes off the first ball, courtesy off a brilliant catch by Manoj Tiwary diving to his front.

 

Next up a great first delivery as he finds an edge off van der Merwe as the balls run down to the boundary.

 

Van der Merwe then times one through the vacant thrid man for another boundary.

 

At the end of two overs, Somerset were 26-1.

Jacques Kallis and Yusuf Pathan turned the heat on just at the right moment to power Kolkata to 161-3 from 20 overs.

 

Kallis, who has been consistent piled on the runs after Kolkata lost early wickets, while Pathan used his long handle to good effect.

 

Infact Pathan smashed four consecutive sixes to set the momentum in Kolkata's way.

 

Kallis remained unbeaten on 74, while Pathan was on 39 runs.

Yusuf Pathan is in full flow now, smashing four sixes of part-time spinner Arul Suppaih, which seems to have turned the game on its head.

 

Kolkata were looking the acceleratin and Pathan provided just that as he used the slog sweeps to good effect smashing six after six.

 

Meanwhile Kallis too joined in the party with a maximum, off young Dockrell, which brought up his half-century.

 

At the end of 16 overs  KKR were 124-3. Kallis is going strong on 51, while Pathan is on 28.

Alfonso Thomas back into the attack and he picks up the wicket of Manoj Tiwary.

 

Another short ball this time as Tiwary is late on the shot and eventually top edging one to Dockrell at short fine-leg.

 

Yusuf Pathan is in the middle as KKR were 74-3 after 13 overs.

Jacques Kallis and Manoj Tiwary look to rebuild after twin shocks from Gregory in the intial overs.

 

The duo has played sensibly and getting the odd boundary. Spin has been introduced in the form of young George Dockrell.

 

Somerset have three left-arm spinners and Tomas will look to all three to slow things down.

 

Kolkata were 62-2 after 10 overs. Kallis is on 27, while Tiwary is on 15.

Lewis Gregory provided the much-needed breakthrough, removing the dangerman Manvinder Bisla for 17 runs.

 

Bisla was not comfortable at the short-pitch delivery and was done in by one again. Bisla went it for a pull shot -- too quick for him. In the end he sliced it to Jones' hand at square leg.

 

Next Gregory finds the leading edge of Gambhir's bat and Alfonso Thomas completes a simple catch at mid-off.

 

Kolkata were 21-2 after three overs.

So after a brilliant first over, Bisla chips down the track for a single this time off Murali Karthik.

 

Jacques Kallis at the other end takes a single to get off the mark.

 

Bisla gets under a length ball and lofts it over the extra cover boundary for a maximum. Kolkata were 18-0 after 2 overs.

Kolkata Knight Riders have won the toss and have elected to bat first against Somerset.

 

The good news is Gautam Gambhir is back in KKR colours. Gauti says he is over his concussion and is raring to go.

 

This game is a rematch of sorts. Kolkata had lost to Somerset in the qualifying round but still managed to make it to the main draw.

In the end it was convincing display as the Warriors continued their winning run to beat South Australian Redbacks by 50 runs.

 

Redbacks were never in the hunt as they kept losing wickets at regular intervals and skipper Michael Klinger was the top-scorer with 34 runs to his name.

 

For Warriors, Tsotsobe was the successful bowler with 2-30.

After scoring a brilliant 88 with the bat, JJ Smuts now turned the tide in Warriors' favour pickign up the wicket of Borgas.

 

Borgas went for six once again but couldn't clear Tsotsobe at the boundary to sink further.

 

Redbacks were 75-5 after 12 overs with another 97 runs required from 48 balls.

Just when South Australian Redbacks were putting up a decent partnership, they lost the crucial wicket of Callum Ferguson for just seven runs to his name.

 

Ferguson was decieved by a slower ball from Rusty Theron and ended up spooning it straight to the fielder on the edge of the circle.

 

Redbacks were 35-3. Kilnger is in the middle with 19 runs along with Cameron Borgas.

Lonwabo Tsotsobe struck in his second over too as he had Tom Cooper caught off his own bowling.

 

Cooper going for a pull shot, could time it at all as the South African was more than happy to accept an easy catch.

 

Redbacks were 18-2 after three overs.

Redbacks were delt with a severe blow, when Harris nicked one to Mark Boucher behind the stumps.

 

Harris, who had hit a boundary the previous ball, went for an expansive hit, only to edge it.

 

At the end of two overs, Redbacks were 11-1.

A brilliant counter-attacking cricket from JJ Smuts powered Warriors to a competitive 171-5.

 

Smuts after losing Prince early, decided to use the long handle, and did it successfully making 88 runs off just 65 balls.

 

He was particularly severe on Shaun Tait, who in the end turned out to be the most expensive bowler. He was ably supported by first by Colin Ingram and then by Marck Boucher, who made 30 and 34 respectively.

 

Daniel Harris was the most successful bowler for Redbacks with figures of 2-23 from four overs.

Daniel Harris provides the much-needed breakthrough as he removes Colin Ingram, who was looking to take the game away from the Redbacks.

 

Ingram pulled a short of a length delivery, only to find the fielder in the deep perfectly.

 

At the end of 11 overs, Warriors were 88-2. Smuts is on 49, alongwith Boucher is on 1.

JJ Smuts is leading a brilliant counter-attacking game against the Redbacks, smashing the bowlers to all corners.

 

Smuts ws particularly severe on Tait smashing 15 runs off his second over.

 

At the end of 8 overs, Warriors were 76-1. Smuts is on 42, while Ingram is on 26.

Shaun Tait strikes for South Australian Redbacks as he castles Ashwell Prince's middle stump.

 

Tait, who was hit for a boundary by Prince's partner Smuts couple of balls ago, bowled a perfect yorker to send the left-hander back to the pavillion for just three runs.

 

Warriors were 13-1 after two overs.

Warrior's skipper Johan Botha has won the toss and has elected to bat first against South Australian Redbacks at the Rajiv Gandhi international stadium.

The wicket looks dry and probably that's the reason, why Redbacks have decided to go in with three spinners in the their side.

The Warriors won their opening encounter with a thrilling last-ball win over Royal Challengers Bangalore.
