IPL update: Mumbai thrash holders Chennai in opener

Timeline  Refresh

23:15
Scorecard:

Franklin (25 not out) smashes the second ball after resumption, by Bollinger, to the fence.

Rayudu (18 not out) smashes the fifth ball of the same over for a maximum to seal the game for Mumbai Indians with a whopping 19 balls left.

The unbeaten 43-run stand for the third wicket takes Mumbai to 115 for two, and an emphatic start to their campaign.

It is disastrous start for the two-time defending champions while being a perfect one for Mumbai Indians, who have carried forward the form that helped them win the Champions League T20 title last year.

MS Dhoni and the Chennai think tank have a lot of thinking to do.
23:06
Scorecard:

Franklin and Rayudu are doing the right thing here, dealing in ones and twos.

With less than 10 runs left to get, there's no need to take any risk. MI reach the 100-run mark in the 15th over.

R Ashwin ends with figures of none for 20. He has been unimpressive today, failing to get the wickets that his team expected him to.

Mumbai 104 for two after 16 overs.

Time for the second strategic time out.
22:48
Scorecard:

Sachin Tendulkar (16), meanwhile, has retired hurt.

He leaves the field with an injured finger after a Bollinger delivery hit him.

James Franklin comes in to join Rayudu. He begins with a boundary off Jakati.

Mumbai 84 for two after 11 overs.
22:35
Scorecard:

Doug Bollinger provides Chennai a second breakthrough, having Rohit Sharma (0) caught behind.

Sharma was never comfortable after a Bollinger hit him hard on the body. Ambati Rayudu comes out to bat.

Mumbai Indians 72 for two after nine overs.

Time for the first strategic time out.
22:26
Scorecard:

Richard Levi scores a half century on his Mumbai Indians debut.

It is a well-deserved innings.

However, he departs soon after, Bravo having him caught by Bollinger.

Levi's 35-ball knock is inclusive of six hits to the fence and three over it.

Mumbai 69 for one after eight overs.
22:18
Scorecard:

Tendulkar and Levi are combining well for Mumbai.

They have put on a decent partnership for the opening wicket. It is already worth more than 50 runs.

The partnership is all the more valuable considering MI have a small total to chase. Ravindra Jadeja's first over costs Chennai 16 runs.

Mumbai 53 without loss after six overs.
22:00

Mumbai 11 without loss after two overs.
21:36
Scorecard:

Harbhajan ends his spell (4-0-24-0). Malinga bowls the final over. He has Bollinger (3) caught by Rohit Sharma for his second wicket.

No boundaries in the final 10 overs.

Chennai manage only 112 one ball short of their stipulated 20 overs. In the final analysis, it was a good toss for Mumbai to lose.
21:27
Scorecard:

Kieron Pollard strikes in the first ball after the second strategic timeout, having Badrinath (10) caught by Harbhajan Singh at midwicket. It is Pollard's second wicket. He ends his spell with impressive figures of two for 15.

Pragyan Ojha, meanwhile, has finished his spell - ending with impressive figures of two for 17. Malinga replaces him in the attack.

R Ashwin (3) runs himself out in the over. It's more than 50 balls since the last boundary was hit. That says a lot about the MI bowling.

Chennai 104 for eight after 18 overs.
21:15
Scorecard:

Pollard gets his first wicket in his second over, having Albie Morkel (3) caught by Ojha at deep sqaure leg.

Captain MS Dhoni comes out to join Badrinath with his team in dire straits. He doesn't survive long, running himself out for just four. It is only the second time Dhoni is run out in an IPL game.

The two-million-dollar-baby Ravindra Jadeja comes out to bat.

Chennai 99 for six after 16 overs.
20:58

Scorecard:

Vijay looked completely at ease during his 17-ball stay at the crease and his struggle ended when he hit straight to Harbhajan at mid on.

Dwayne Bravo, who played for MI in the first season, comes out to bat.

Another six runs come off Harbhajan's second over but Franklin's second is an expensive one, 14 runs coming off it, with Bravo hitting successive boundaries.

Raina helps himself to a second boundary, this time on the on side, in Bhajji's third over.

Chennai 69 for two after nine overs.
20:30
Scorecard:

Harbhajan Singh comes into the attack in the fifth over, replacing Malinga (2-0-11-0). He gives away six runs.

It's a double bowling change for Mumbai as James Franklin replaces Abu Nechim (2-0-17-0) in the sixth over.

The kiwi strikes with his fifth ball, having an out of sorts Vijay (10) caught by his captain.

Chennai 42 for two after six overs.

20:22

Suresh Raina has come out to bat. Malinga welcomes him with a toe crusher.

Abu Nechim Ahmed to share the new ball. He concedes just four runs first up. Six come off Malinga's second over.

Raina breaks the shackles with a maximum of Abu Nechim. Vijay also gets his first boundary in an over that costs Mumbai 11 runs.

20:05

Ambati Rayudu runs out Du Plessis to give Mumbai a great start.

Chennai four for one after the first over.

19:43
Mumbai Indians won the toss and invited Chennai Super Kings to bat first in the opening match of IPL V on Wednesday.

"We look to bowl first as it is fresh wicket," reasoned captain Harbhajan Singh.

His opposite number, MS Dhoni, concurred.

"We would have batted first as well. But I am not too disappointed," he said.
