IPL update: Rahane, Cooper guide Royals over Punjab

Kevon Cooper picked up his fourth wicket to become the second bowler after Shoaib Akhtar to pick up four wickets on debut.

 

Chasing 192 for victory, Kings XI Punjab never looked in as they finished with 160-9 -- 31 runs short of the total to hand Rahul Dravid his first win in Rajasthan colours.

 

Cooper who used the long handle to good effect came in picked up the wickets of Paul Valthaty, Shaun Marsh, Abhishek Nayar and Piyush Chawla.

 

He then had couple of catch in the field and a run out to round up a brilliant  night for the West Indian.

 

Earlier, Ajinkya Rahane's 66-ball 98 helped Rajasthan post the highest total of IPL 5 as they finshished with 191-4 from their 20 overs.

It is David Hussey's turn to make the long walk back the pavillion after he was snapped by Siddharth Trivedi for 12. 

 

Hussey looking to clear long on couldn't get the distance on the ball and was caught in the deep by Kevon Cooper.

 

At the end of 12 overs Punjab were 88-5. Mandeep Singh is on 12 along with Bipul Sharma, who is yet to open his account.

Kevon Cooper after dismissing Paul Valthaty in his first over, now has Shaun Marsh for seven.

 

A brilliant slower one from Cooper has Marsh stretching, only to scoop thye ball to Rahul Dravid who takes a neat running catch.

 

Couple of balls later he had Abhishek Nayar walking back to the pavilion after the latter played a poor shot.

 

A short ball from Copper as Nayar was caught in two minds in the end only managing to get a top edge to Sreevats Goswami for 10.

 

Punjab now in trouble as they were 61-4 after 8 overs.

Both Ada Gilchrist and Paul Valthaty are back in the hut for Punjab now, afte Kevon Cooper struk in his first over to remove the latter for 13.

 

Valthaty was surprised by a full toss as he cuts it straight to Pankaj Singh at thrid man.

 

Amit Singh strikes the early blow for Rajasthan as he had Adam Gilchrist walking back to the pavillion for 27.

 

Gilchirst who was dropped earlier was undone by a slower delivery from Singh and was safely held by Cooper at mid on.

 

Punjab were 45-2. Shaun Marsh is on 2 along with Abhisek Nayar who is on one.

Riding high on a brilliant 66-ball 98 from Ajinkya Rahane, Rajasthan Royals have put up a strong 191-4 after being put into bat first.

 

Rahane, though couldn't complete his maiden IPL century as he was castled by James Faulkner in the final over. Rahane hit 16 boundaries and a six in the process.

 

Rahane took a special liking to Praveen Kumar smashing him for four boundaries in his second over.

 

He, then smashed three boundries, which ensured the century is well within his reach.

 

Earlier, a 77-runs opening stand ensured Rajasthan were off to a strong start. Vital contributions from Brad Hodge and Owais Shah in the end ensured that the hosts cross run-in close to the 200-run mark.

After being put into bat first by Adam Gilchrist, Ajinkya Rahane turned the heat on right from the first ball, smashing the bowlers to all corners.

 

He hit Praveen Kumar for four boundries, then repeated the same thing off Piyush Chawla's final over.

 

But Faulkner gets the breakthrough as he castles Brad Hodge for 21.

 

Rajasthan were 162-3 in 17.2 overs. Rahane is 5 short of his maiden IPL ton.

Harmeet Singh provides the first breakthrough for Punjab as he had Rahul Dravid caught in the deep by James Faulkner for 28.

 

Dravid tries to slap a wide delivery from Harmeet, doesn't catch it as well as he would have liked and was caugh in the deep.

 

Meanwhile Rahane completed his half century with a boudary off Piyush Chawla. Chawla bowled a short one as Rahane scopps one over the bowler's head for a boundary, which broungh his half-century.

 

Ashok Menaria, meanwhile, was bowled round his legs for duck. Menaria sort of yorked himself out .

 

At the end of 11 overs, Rajasthan were 87-2. Rahane is on 51, while Brad Hodge is on one.

Bipul Sharma comes in now -- Gilly looking to change things for now after the seamers were whacked to all corners.

 

Rahane chips down the track hits it long off for a single. Dravid at the other end smashes one to long off -- misfield allows the right-hander to come back for the second.

 

At the end of seven overs Rajasthan were 60-0. Rahane is on 35, Dravid is on 20.

Ajinkya Rahane is off the blocks quickly as Rajasthan Royals are off to a flier against Kings XI Punjab in Jaipur.

 

After being put into bat, Rahane took a special liking to country mate Praveen Kumar smashing him for four boundaries in his second over.

 

Rahul Dravid at the other end, is at his usual best driving one straight past James Faulkner for his first boundary.

 

At the end of four overs Rajasthan were 42-0. Rahane is on 26, while Dravid is on 11.

Welcome to the fourth match of the IPL between Kings XI Punjab vs Rajasthan Royals in Jaipur.

 

In the first match, Pune Warriors beat Mumbai Indians by 29 runs.

 

Meanwhile, Punjab skipper have won the toss and ave elected to field first. Gilly feels that the pitch won't change through the length of the match.

 

Rajasthan skipper Rahul Dravid too would have opted to bowl first.

Dinda, bowling the final over, traps Harbhajan (16) out leg before to pick up his fourth wicket. 

That ends Mumbai's misery. They end up woefully short at 100 for nine.

Pune Warriors win the match by 29 runs.

Callum Ferguson takes a spectacular catch to end Franklin's (32) resistance. The New Zealander loses his bat while trying to hit that Dinda ball. 

Pune close in on a memorable win with Mumbai on 91 for seven after 18 overs.

Rahul Sharma cleans up an unusually quiet Pollard (8). 

The Pune spinners have done well to stifle the Mumbai batsmen. 

The home team is tottering at 77 for six even as their captain comes in to bat.

Karthik and Franklin put together 49 runs for the fourth wicket, at almost a run-a-ball. 

However, just when things looked to have settled down for Mumbai, Kartik has Karthik (32) stumped.

The hosts lose both their wickets early. James Franklin is the new man in.

Ojha is impressive yet again with figures of one for 23. It would have been better for him had it not been for his final over that cost him and his team 11 runs. 

Malinga bowls the penultimate over, giving away eight runs, including a boundary to Smith. He final analysis makes for an interesting read (4-1-16-2).

Munaf bowls the final over. He gives away only four runs while picking up an important wicket (Smith).

Pune manage just 129 for nine in their stipulated 20 overs.

Steven Smith does a good job for them with the bat with a 32-ball 39.

Malinga strikes soon after the second strategic time out, shattering Marlon Samuels' (4) stumps. 

It is the Sri Lankan's second wicket of the innings, both secured in trademark fashion. 

The crowd has already sensed the result and is going up in ruptures time and again. 

Bhuvneshwar Kumar comes out to bat. He doesn't survive long. Ojha cleans him up with a beauty. In comes Murali Kartik and he shows his intent at the outset, hitting a four and a six.

Pune 115 for seven after 18 overs.

Uthappa and Steven Smith are putting together a good little partnership (44 runs) here for Pune. 

They have steadied things for their team considerably. However, just when things looked to settle down for Pune, Uthappa (36) miscues a short delivery from Pollard, the bowler making no mistake with the catch.

Pune reach the 50-run mark in the 10th over. James Franklin replaces Ojha (3-0-12-0) in the attack in the 12th over. Uthappa welcomes him with successive bounadries as 12 runs come off the over.

Pragyan Ojha replaces his skipper in the attack in the sixth over. It is a good time for him to bowl. He gives away just three runs in his first over which also witnesses Ferguson surviving a stumping appeal.

Kieron Pollard replaces Munaf (2-0-11-1) in the attack in the ninth over. Ferguson (12) is run out in the fifth ball of the over, courtesy a Rohit Sharma direct hit. 

Pune go into the first strategic timeout precariously placed at 48 for four.

Harbhajan's second over costs Mumbai 10 runs but more importantly gets them the vital wicket of Ganguly. 

Robin Uthappa comes out to replace his captain.

Munaf Patel is brought on to bowl in the fifth over, replacing Malinga (2-1-3-1). He strikes fifth ball, cleaning up Parnell (11).

Callum Ferguson comes out to bat.

Pune tottering at 27 for three after five overs.

Harbhajan Singh to share the new ball. He gives away only two runs in his opening over. 

It is very hot out here at the Wankhede but it is almost a full house. Despite the overdose of cricket in recent times, its popularity remains intact.

Parnell gets the first boundary for Pune in Harbhajan's second over. However, the Mumbai captain has his opposite number stumped only two balls later. Ganguly manages only three.

It has been a tepid start for the visitors. They have made 20 for two after four overs.

Sourav Ganguly and Manish Pandey open the batting for Pune and it is expectedly Lasith Malinga starting the proceedings for Mumbai.

He strikes fifth ball, shattering Pandey's stumps. Pune lose their first wicket even before they could put a single run on board.

Wayne Parnell comes out to bat. Now this is an interesting move.

The news is Sachin Tendulkar isn't playing. Suryakumar Yadav takes his place. 

Pune have a change of uniform. They have gone from the all black in their debut season to a lighter shade of blue this year.

Mumbai Indians won the toss and elected to field first against Pune Warriors in their IPL match at the Wankhede stadium on Friday. 

The new Pune captain seems to be happy with the toss loss. He admits he would have batted anyways.

Irfan Pathan eases the pressure with two sixes in two overs, one off Kallis and the other off De Lange. 

De Lange's third over is an expensive one, 17 runs coming off it. Irfan hits two maximums in the over.  

Yusuf to bowl the penultimate over. He concedes nine runs, with Irfan finding the fence.

Bhatia bowls the final over and Irfan finishes things off with a boundary first ball. 

Delhi score an impressive eight wicket win, with five balls to spare. 

Irfan Pathan stars with an unbeaten 42, his 20-ball knock inclusive of two boundaries and three maximums.

Rajat Bhatia brought onto bowl in the eighth over and he strikes second ball, a spectacular catch by Iqbal Abdulla at long on helping Kolkata getting rid of the dangerous Sehwag (20). 

Glenn Maxwell comes out to replace his captain.

Iqbal Abdulla into the attack in the fourth over and Sehwag, who was quiet till now, welcomes him with a six over long on. 

Jacques Kallis replaces Lee (2-0-15-0) in the attack in the fifth over. He gives away just four runs.

De Lange back into the attack in the sixth over and Finch smashes his second ball to the fine-leg fence. It is the Australian's fifth boundary of the innings and helps him reaches his highest score ever in the tournament.

However, Kallis strikes in the second ball of his second over, rattling Finch's (30) timber.

Delhi 56 for one after seven overs.
