IPL: Knight Riders thrash Royal Challengers by 47 runs

Led by Gautam Gambhir's 93 Kolkata Knight Riders beat Royal Challengers by 47 runs.

 

Chasing a mammoth 191 for victory, Royal Challengers were never in the chase after losing three quick wickets and could only manage 143-6 from 20 overs.

 

Chris Gayle tried his best with 58-ball 86, but there was no one to support him from the other end.

 

For Kolkata Suni Narine was the most economical bowler with 1-11, while Kallies picked up 2-31.

Kolkata Knight Riders are almost there -- closing in on a big win here at the Eden Gardens.

 

Kolkata bowlers have stifiled Gayle and picked up wickets at regular intervals to ensure they go on second spot behind Delhi on the points table.

 

Gayle has played an uncharactersitic innings -- may be he is injured but its been an unlike Gayle innings.

 

At the end of 19 overs RCB were 138-5. Gayle is on 82, while Vettori is on three.

Rajat Bhatia breaks an important partnership removing Saurabh Tiwary for 19.

 

Tiwary had joined hands with Chris Gayle, after Royal Challengers had lost three quick wickets up front.

 

Tiwary who had smashed Bhatia for a maximum a ball ago tried to repeat the stroke but got the leading edge and was caught by Gautam Gambhir at point.

 

At the end of 13 overs Royal Challengers were 78-4. Gayle is on 34, while Mayank Agrawal is on one.

Kolkata Knight Riders have managed to keep it real tight in the middle after the hosts picked up three quick wickets up front.

 

The pitch has offered assistance to spinners and Jacques Kallis too have managed to contain Chris Gayle.

 

However Saurabh Tiwary and Gayle are putting up a partnership to give themselves a shot at the target. The duo have put on 22 runs so far.

 

At the end of 10 overs RCB were 56-3. Gayle is on 23, Tiwary is on 9.

Jacques Kallis comes into the attack and strikes immediatly removing Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers off successive balls.

 

Kallis first had Kohli caught leg-before wicket for 18, then had AB de Villiers playing a flase stroke off the very next ball, much to the delight of KKR fans.

 

After six overs RCB were 35-3. Gayle is on 14 along with Saurabh Tiwary who is on 1.

A big first over for Kolkata Knight Riders as Yusuf Pathan strikes off the final ball off the over removing Tillakaratne Dilshan for one.

 

Chasing 191 for victory here at the Eden Gardens, Dilshan tried to loft Yusuf over midd-off fielder, but couldn't get the timing on the ball and hit it straight to Rajat Bhatia.

 

RCB were 2-1 after 1 overs.

A brilliant 51-ball 93 from Gautam Gambhir ensured that Kolkata Knight Riders post a mammoth 190-4 against Royal Challengers Bangalore.

 

Gambhir was well supported by Brendon McCullum (43) first and then Jacques Kallis (41) who used the long handle to good effect.

 

While rest of the batsmen took time to settle in, Gambhir was in attacking mode right from the outset.

 

For Royal Challengers Vinay Kumar was the successful bowlers with 2-31 off his four bowlers.

Gambhir smashed a 50-ball 93, with nine boundaries and five sixes as Kolkata inch towards 200-run mark.

 

Gambhir was in attacking mode right from the outset smashing all the bowlers on a batting pitch.

 

While the likes of Brendon McCullum and Jacques Kallis struggled in the initial front, Gambhir had no problems with the timing.

After a brilliant opening stand, Jacques Kallis and Gambhir have put on another 50-runs stand for the first wicket.

 

It's been raining sixes in Kolkata considering the fact that rest of the batsmen have struggled to get the pace on the wicket.

 

Gambhir is closing in on a century as Kallis smacks Hetal Patel for a maximum.

 

At the end of 17 overs Kolkata were 160-1. Gambhir is on 90, while Kallis is on 24.

A brilliant 28-ball half-century from Gautam Gambhir has put Kolkata Knight Riders in the drivers seat.

 

He has been in attacking mode right from the outset and have made full use of the two lives that he got early in the in the innings.

 

Earlier, Daniel Vettori finally provided the much-needed breakthrough as he castles Brendon McCullum for 43.

 

McCullum smashed the first two deliveries to thumping boundaries before Vettori pushed one quicker, which stayed a bit low and crashed onto the middle and off stump.

 

After 12 overs Kolkata were 107-1. Gambhir is on 58, while Kallis is on 3

The ball is spinning but surprise surprise -- its the fast men who are spinning the ball more than the spinners.

 

McCullum pulls Vinay for a boundary as KKR end the over on a high.

 

After 7 overs, Kolkata were 55-0. Gambhir is on 37, while McCullum is on 15.

Gamhir fails to keep the edge one down -- Patel on a full length dive missed it as he landed and the ball goes to the boundary.

 

Next up Gambhir flicks on the leg side for consecutive boundaries as KKR push on.

 

RCB would have dearly loved to picked up Gambhir early. And as we speak Gambhir is DROPPED again!!!

 

This time round Tillakaratne Dilshan who puts him down behind point. Gambhir goes for a cut fails to keep it down -- Dilshan goes out with one hand fails to hold on to it.

 

KKR after three overs were 23-0. Gambhir is on 14, McCullum is on 8.

First up, McCullu gets off the mark with a boundary.

 

A short of a lenght delivery, McCullum moves on to the off side and flicks one -- beats fine leg for the first boundary.

 

Gambhir at the other end cuts off the backfoot for his boundary.

Kolkata Knight Riders have won the toss and have elected to bat first against Royal Challengers Bangalore here at the Eden Gardens.

 

KKR were victorious in the first leg and Bangalore would be hoping to do the same.

 

Kolkata have made one change to their side, bringing in Iqbal Abdullah, who replaces L Balaji.

 

RCB are going in with the same side.

 

In the earlier match of the day, Kings XI Punjab held their nerve to beat Chennai Super Kings by seven runs.

PUNJAB BEAT CHENNAI BY SEVEN RUNS!!!

Mahmood played a big role in Punjab's victory as he claimed three for 25 in four overs, while scoring a quick 18 with the bat.

Chawla also made a good contribution with the ball, taking two for 20 in four overs.

Meanwhile, it is to the second match of the day, between Kolkata Knight Riders and Royal Challengers Bangalore.

A full ball on the stumps and Kulasekara hits it to long-on for one.

But Mahmood delivers another yorker and Ashwin hits it to deep midwicket for one.

Kulasekara walks across his stumps but offers no stroke to a full ball on the leg side, which misses the stumps by a few inches. The Chennai batsmen run across for a single and are shocked to see that just a bye has been given.

Meanwhile, Praveen Kumar and R Ashwin have a spat over that decision.

10 needed from the final ball. Mahmood keeps his head and bowls a good full ball as Ashwin can flick it to the leg side for two runs.

Kumar to bowl the 19th over as Chennai need 32 from two overs for victory. Morkel takes a single from the first ball and Bravo follows that up with a SIX as he makes most of a full toss.

He gets an inside edge from the next ball behind square on the leg side and quick running gets them two runs.

Bravo whips the next ball to deep midwicket and sprints across for another couple.

The West Indian then looks to heave it on the leg side but is caught by Chawla at deep midwicket as he holds on to a good catch.

Is this the end of Chennai's hopes? No wait, they still have Nuwan Kulasekara to follow, he played a few good innings in the tri-series in Australia.

Another good yorker from Awana as Morkel plays it long-off for one. Bravo also cannot do much and drives a low full toss to long-on for another single.

Morkel hits the final ball to long-off for another single. Excellent over from Awana in the circumstances as he gives just seven runs.

Chennai need 50 runs from the last fours for victory. With Morkel and Bravo out in the middle, Chennai are still in the hunt and Punjab cannot take things for granted yet.

Punjab also need to learn from their previous match, against Mumbai Indians, when they failed to finish the match and lost from a position of strength. Chawla was hit for 27 runs in the penultimate as Mumbai needing 32 runs from two overs, won with a delivery to spare.

The experienced Praveen Kumar back into the attack now. Bravo drives the first ball down the ground for one and Morkel can only get just one from the next delivery.

The next ball is a wide down the leg side but Praveen gets it right as he bowls a perfect yorker which Bravo misses.

But Praveen bowls a full toss which Bravo lofts down the ground for a SIX!!! Two more singles to end the over as Chennai score 11 runs from that over.

Mahmood comes back to bowl his third over. Dangerman Albie Morkel is out in the middle with Dwayne Bravo.

Mahmood starts with a slower delivery which Morkel hits on the off-side for a single. Bravo then chips it to midwicket to get two runs and takes a single from the next ball.

Morkel digs out a yorker for one and Bravo flicks to midwicket and some quick running gets him two more runs.

He takes a single to finish the over as eight come from it.

Chawla back to bowl his final over after just one over from Hussey, where he picked up the wicket of Saha.

DROPPED!!! Bravo hits the second ball to long-off but Marsh fails to hold on to give the right-hander a reprieve.

But Chawla gets the wicket in that over. Jadeja tries to heave it on the leg side but gets a top edge to lob a high catch to Hussey in the covers.

Chennai need 69 runs from seven overs for victory. Captain MS Dhoni has a big task on had now but he relishes such pressure situations.

However, this time he cannot last for long as he is run out for one. He inside edges it on the leg side and has no clue of where the ball was but wicketkeeper Saini is quick to react and run out Dhoni.

Dwayne Bravo gets a single from the fourth ball. And Jadeja ends the over in style as he steps down the wicket and lofts it over long-on for a SIX!!!

That was a much needed six for Chennai.

They now need 62 from six overs for victory.

David Hussey brings himself into the attack. The Punjab captain strikes in his very first over as he claims the wicket of the struggling Saha.

Saha is unfazed as he picks up another single. Ravindra Jadeja gets his first boundary as he pulls a short ball past the mid-on fielder. But he gets a lifeline from the next ball as Chawla drops an easy opportunity at midwicket.

DROPPED!! Jadeja is dropped on five and could this prove to be costly for Punjab?

At the halfway stage, Chennai are 69 for two, and need another 88 runs from the last ten overs for victory.

The hard work from Punjab's bowlers in the last few overs pays dividends.

This time it is Chawla, who strikes with the key wicket of Suresh Raina. The left-hander is drawn out of his crease and is beaten in the flight to be stumped for 15.

Awana comes into the attack as play resumes after the first strategic break. Both Raina and Saha take a single each before Awana bowls two dot balls to the left-hander.

Punjab's bowlers are looking to fight their way back in the contest, giving away just 12 runs in the last three overs.

However, Mahmood provides his team with the much needed breakthrough as he gets the wicket of the in-form du Plessis, who is caught and bowled for 29.

Parvinder Awana is introduced into the attack. He is unlucky off the very first ball as a thick outside edge from Badrinath flies a diving Saini behind the stumps for a boundary.

Badrinath then tries to chip it over short fine leg but fails to get it off the middle for just one.

Du Plessis seems in a rush. He charges down the wicket and crashes it through the covers for a boundary as Chennai take control with the bat. The right-hander tries to smash another one through the covers but fails to find the gap.

Du Plessis is gifted another four as he drives a full ball down the ground and Praveen at mid-on misses a regulation stop to gift a boundary. He takes a single from the final ball of that over as Chennai race to 45 after five overs.

Awana has made a poor start to his bowling, giving away 14 runs in his opening over.

After a slow start, Chennai have suddenly cut loose. They scored just eight from the first two overs, but have smashed 37 from the last three overs.

Badrinath gets a single from the first ball while du Plessis struggles to get the next two balls away as the ball seems to take ages to come on to the bat.

Du Plessis then looks to make up for the two dot balls as he gives himself room and chips it over point and gets a boundary courtesy of misfielding from the point fielder.

The next ball, du Plessis charges down the wicket and flicks it over midwicket for a SIX!!!

11 runs from that over as Chennai reach 31 after four overs.

Du Plessis plays the wristy flick for a single on the leg side. Praveen then bowls a rank long hop as he tries to bowl the slow leg cutter and Badrinath cuts it past the point fielder for his second boundary.

Du Plessis is a bit sedate to start with before he unwinds with a big shot down the ground. He lofts Praveen back over his head for a huge SIX!!!

It's spin from the other end as left-arm spinner Bhargav Bhatt takes on from the other end.

Badrinath plays the late cut off the second ball, getting it past the wicketkeeper for two runs as the short thirdman fielder makes a good stop on the ropes.

The next ball bounces a bit more as Badrinath misses the cut shot and is lucky not to have edged it.

Badrinath ends the over with a boundary as he opens the face of the bat and steers it between point and short thirdman.

Chennai are eight for no loss after two overs.

The in-form Faf du Plessis walks out to open the batting with S Badrinath. Praveen Kumar makes a good start as du Plessis hits the first two balls straight to the cover fielder.

Du Plessis is lucky as he walks across his stumps and looks to play it fine on the leg side but misses the ball, which goes very close to his stumps.

The wicketkeeper now comes up to the stumps with a view to keep du Plessis rooted to his crease.

The South African gets his team off the  mark as he drives it to the covers but good fielding from Miller stops a certain boundary as Chennai get just one.

Badrinath takes just one ball to get off the mark with a single on the off-side.

A good start by Praveen as he concedes just two runs from his opening over.

Punjab 156-8 (20 ovs) vs Chennai

Punjab lost their way in the last five overs as they lost six wickets for 35 runs in five overs.

Morkel caused most of the damage as he took three for 29 in four overs, while Bravo took two for 28.

Kulasekara also did a good job with the ball, with one for 29 but the Chennai spinners struggled to make an impact.

Mandeep (56) and Marsh (32) gave Punjab a good start, but the middle order failed to come to the party.

Chennai will feel confident of chasing down this modest total on a flat wicket and a long batting line-up at their disposal.

Kulasekara to bowl the final over of the innings. Kumar chips the first ball over the cover region for two runs. The next ball is a yorker that Kumar can only dig out and he hits a full toss on the off-side for one.

Saini then looks to chip it over the short fine leg fielder but mistimes it for just two runs. He looks to heave the next ball on the leg side but is foxed by the slower ball and ends up spooning a simple high catch to the bowler Kulasekara.

Kumar then smashes it over the cover fielder but Bravo sprints across to his left from mid-off to stop a boundary and give away just two runs.

Bipul pulls a short ball from past the short fine leg fielder for a boundary. A rare loose delivery from Chennai in the last few overs.

The next ball is a yorker which Bipul digs out for a single.

Nitin Saini, who opened in the last match, has come out to bat at No. 8. He starts off with a four as he pulls a short ball from Bravo through midwicket.

But Punjab lose another wicket off the next ball. Saina misses the heave as Bravo bowls the slower ball but the two batsmen set off for a quick run. MS Dhoni is quick to break the stumps at the batting end with a direct hit as Punjab keep losing wickets.

Praveen Kumar is the new batsman and he defends the first ball back to the bowler. Bravo ends the over with another good slower ball as Kumar gets a leading edge but scampers for a quick single.

Another interesting change in the batting line-up from Punjab, promoting left-hander Bipul Sharma ahead of Piyush Chawla.

Punjab lose another wicket and this time it is the turn of captain Hussey to walk back to the pavilion.

The right-hander pulls a short ball straight to Jakati at midwicket.

Punjab nearly lose another wicket there. Chawla hit it straight to Jakati at covers as non-striker Bipul set off for a quick run and was sent back. He was lucky that Jakati failed to collect the ball cleanly.

But Chawla perishes off the next ball. He is foxed by the slower ball from Morkel and lobs a simple catch to long-on, where Bravo pulls off a stunner, leaping high before plucking it out of thin air.

Mandeep tries to play the paddle sweep against Bravo, but misses the shot and is lucky that the ball misses the stumps by inches.

He then gets a single from the next ball as Punjab struggle to lift the tempo.

Mandeep finally perishes as he holes out a simple catch to Raina at long-off to be dismissed after a good innings of 56 from 50 balls, hitting five fours and a six.

Hussey ends the over with a much needed boundary. He strokes a full toss from Bravo and hits it past the bowler for a four despite a good diving effort from du Plessis at long-on.

Bravo is doing a superb job with the ball. He has taken two for 18 in three overs.

Morkel pulls the first ball of Morkel's third over for two runs and then chips the ball wide of the long-on fielder for a boundary.

Morkel bowls a few slow bouncers to Miller, who has problem adjusting to it. And it causes his downfall too.

Miller tries to scoop it over the wicketkeeper but manages to edge it behind to Dhoni, to fall for 19 from 15 balls.

David Hussey starts with two runs as he slaps it to the deep cover region.

Mandeep takes a single from the first ball of Ashwin's new over to complete his maiden half-century in IPL, from 44 balls. Punjab will now need to him to cut loose and hit a few big shots.

Miller flicks it to the leg side as the left-hander makes his tired partner Mandeep sprint across for two runs.

Marsh gets another four as he cuts a short wide delivery past the point fielder.

Punjab are in control at the moment as the openers put on a good stand. That was a very expensive over for Chennai as Jakati went for 17 runs in that over.

Keeping the conditions in mind, Chennai bring back left-arm spinner Shadab Jakati back in the team in place of pacer Yo Mahesh.
