STUMPS - DAY 1

It turned out to be a frustrating final session for India as Kruger van Wyk and Doug Bracewell frustrated them with some resolute batting before play was called off early due to bad light.

8.3 overs left in the day and the official announcement will be made at 425pm IST.

Van Wyk employed the sweep shot to great effect, scoring 63 from 85 balls, while Bracewell look comfortable on 30 from 61 balls. The duo were involved in an unbroken stand of 82 runs in 18.2 overs to continue their good batting show on the opening day.

Captain Taylor provided the impetus with a brilliant counter-attacking innings of 113 from 127 balls, laced with 16 fours and two sixes. Martin Guptill was impressive at the top with 53 from 79 balls but threw his wicket away with a rash shot, and Daniel Flynn did the same after scoring 33.

For India, Ojha struck at regular intervals to claim four for 90 in 27 overs, but Zaheer was their best bowler with one for 74. Ashwin took one for 82 in 24 overs, while Yadav was hit for plenty to concede 71 runs in 12.3 overs.

BAD LIGHT STOPS PLAY

Nine overs to go in the day as India take the new ball and give it to pacer Umesh Yadav.

Bracewell edges the second ball as he looks to cut a short ball but the outside edge falls short of Sehwag at first slip. Bracewell then throws his bat at a wide delivery and this time the edge flies for a boundary through the thirdman region.

But Ojha continues as Dhoni decides not to take the new ball. Van Wyk takes a single from the first ball before Bracewell plays a late cut off the next ball for a boundary behind point.

Barcewell then clips it through the midwicket and gets three runs to get eight runs from that over.
15:49   Van Wyk hits half-century
- Scorecard

NZ 1st inns: 316-6 (80 ovs)

Bracewell is not resorting to the sweep but is playing late and with the spin. He plays the first four balls from Ashwin with the spin on the leg side and once even hit it through the short fine leg fielder.

Bracewell then hit it straight down the ground for one before van Wyk sweeps it for another single to end the over.

Indian spinners seem to have no answers for van Wyk who is tormenting them with the sweep. He brings out the sweep yet again as he gets a boundary through square leg off Ojha, but defends for the rest of that over.

Bracewell chips Ashwin over midwicket to get two runs to the fielder on the boundary. He defends the next ball with a straight ball watching it carefully all the way till the bat as the 7th wicket partnership has grown to 70.

The new ball is available now. Will India go for it right away?
15:41   Taylor made 113, Ojha claimed 4 wickets

NZ 1st inns: 308-6 (77 ovs)

Bracewell has also got his eye in and seems to be comfortably negotiating the spinners. He goes back and hits Ashwin to the leg side for one and van Wyk gets a single from the next ball. Two more singles to end that over.

Van Wyk continues to play the sweep. This time he misses the sweep shot against Ojha as the ball moves away outside the off-stump. But nothing can stop him sweeping as he plays another couple of sweeps but hits it straight to the fielders. It's another maiden over for Ojha, who has bowled 10 maidens so far in his 25-over spell.

- Scorecard

NZ 1st inns: 304-6 (75 ovs)

Van Wyk defends the first two balls of Ojha's new over before cutting a short ball behind point for a boundary. The Indians have gone on the defensive but despite that New Zealand are scoring at a good rate.

They are 304 for six after 75 overs as the final drinks break of the day is taken.

Van Wyk is unbeaten on 55 from 67 balls, while Bracewell is on 14.
15:31   Taylor made 113, Ojha claimed 4 wickets

Van Wyk takes a single to the point off the first ball of Ashwin's new over. Bracewell gets a thick outside edge off Ashwin as he was beaten by the carrom ball but he gets two runs in the process.

That takes New Zealand past the 300-run mark, scoring at more than four runs per over.

15:28   Taylor made 113, Ojha claimed 4 wickets
- Scorecard

NZ 1st inns: 297-6 (73 ovs)

Bracewell nudges Ashwin fine on the leg side for a boundary and takes a single to the midwicket. Ashwin then gets the carrom ball to turn sharply as it beats van Wyk all ends up, who looked to play the sweep shot. However the Kiwi keeper gets the sweep shot off the next ball for two more runs and gets one off the next ball to move to 49.

Van Wyk then takes a single off Ojha to the point region to bring up his maiden half-century in Test cricket. Just a single from that over as Bracewell defends the rest of the over.

NZ 1st inns: 288-6 (70 ovs)

Dhoni is reluctant to use spinners from both ends. Van Wyk is loving the extra pace of Yadav as pulls a short ball through midwicket for a four and then plays the next ball to point for one.

Yadav ends the over with two disappointing bouncers that Bracewell lets go to the keeper.

Van Wyk has grown in confidence as he proves by sweeping Ashwin through the leg side for a four. Two balls later he slog sweeps the off-spinner over midwicket for the second boundary of the over. Despite Taylor's dismissal the runs are coming at a good rate for the visitors as they reach 287 for six after 70 overs.

- Scorecard

NZ 1st inns: 272-6 (68 ovs)

Yadav back into the attack to replace Zaheer. Van Wyk welcomes him to the crease with back to back boundaries, through the covers and square leg respectively. He then steers a short ball to the thirdman region for one and Bracewell gets a single from the final ball of that over.

Ashwin replaces Ojha and concedes just two singles in that over. There is a loud appeal for LBW against Bracewell off the final ball of that over as the right-hander is beaten by the carrom ball that came in sharply and quickly.

NZ 1st inns: 260-6 (66 ovs)

Zaheer comes on to bowl his 18th over. Doug Bracewell gets off the mark with a single but an overthrow gives him an extra run in the process. He then steers the next ball through the vacant thirdman region for a four.

Ojha continues after getting a wicket in his previous over. The Kiwi batsmen pick five runs in that over to move to 260 for six in 66 overs.

NZ 1st inns: 246-6 (64 ovs)

WICKET: Taylor lbw b Ojha 113 (127b, 16x4, 2x6)

Ojha has struck with the big wicket of Taylor, who is trapped leg before wicket for 113. The New Zealand, who hit 16 fours and two sixes in his 127-ball knock, went for the sweep but missed and was trapped in front of the stumps.

That was good captaincy from Dhoni as they got an extra man in the covers at the start of that over. Taylor fell for the trap as he tried to sweep it across the line but was trapped leg before wicket.

Ojha has now taken four for 67 in 20 overs.

NZ 1st inns: 246-5 (63 ovs)

Zaheer comes on for another spell. Van Wyk plays out the first ball to mid-off and does the same with the next couple of deliveries. The right-hander pulls a short ball to fine leg region for a single to end the over.

Ojha continues and it is not long before van Wyk brings out the sweep, hitting it straight at Pujara at short leg. Back to back maiden overs for Ojha after the break.

Taylor hits the first ball from Zaheer on the leg side for one and two balls later van Wyk steers it past point for a four.

Ojha to bowl the first over of the final session. Taylor to face him and it will be interesting if he goes on the attack straightaway. He is watchful to start off with as he defends the first few deliveries and is beaten off the final ball as he attempts to play the cut shot.

Ojha starts with a maiden over after the tea break as NZ reach 240 for five after 60 overs.

TEA - Day 1

Van Wyk plays the sweep for a single and Taylor does the same off the next ball. The Kiwi batsmen have been guilty of poor shot selection and quite a few have lost their wickets to some reckless shots.

Just two singles from that Ashwin over, who has taken one for 50 in 16 overs.

Taylor tries the sweep shot against Ojha but misses. He is beaten off the next ball as Ojha gets it to turn sharply with some bounce and Dhoni appeals for stumping against Taylor, which is ruled not out by the third umpire.

It's maiden over from Ojha.

Van Wyk takes a single from the second ball to the square leg region and Taylor gets one to mid-on. Van Wyk plays out the rest of the over to take his team to tea.

At tea on the opening day, NZ were 240 for five in 59 overs.

Taylor was unbeaten on 112 from 119 balls, having hit 16 fours and two sixes, while van Wyk made seven from 19 balls.

New Zealand made good progress in the session, scoring 132 runs in 30 overs, but importantly lost two wickets.
14:03   Taylor hits 3rd century against India
- Scorecard

NZ 1st inns: 236-5 (56 ovs)

Ashwin continues to bowl round the wicket to Taylor, who is not taking risks against the off-spinner. He plays out the first few balls of that over before looking to swipe it on the leg side but misses. There is a huge appeal for LBW off the next appeal as Taylor is stuck on the pads attempting the sweep shot. Another maiden over for Ashwin.

Van Wyk cuts Ojha behind point to get two runs and a couple of balls later drives it through the covers to get three runs as the ball is stopped just inside the boundary.

NZ are 236 for five in 56 overs.

Taylor rocks back and cuts a short ball from Ojha past point to bring up his hundred from 99 balls. This is his third century against India and the seventh overall.

Two balls later he lofts Ojha over the cover region for his second six. Now that he has completed his century, Taylor is looking to change gears again. He slaps the next ball through the off-side to get three more runs.

Taylor's counter-attacking century has kept the Kiwis in the hunt despite wickets falling at regular intervals.

Ojha is among the wickets for India today. Franklin is caught off a full toss at midwicket as he attempts to play it through the leg side giving Ojha his third wicket of the innings.

Franklin made eight before Raina pulled off a brilliant catch diving full length to his right.

NZ lose the advantage by giving away wickets at regular intervals. NZ tail starts with wicketkeeper Kruger van Wyk out in the middle with his captain.

Taylor is looking set for a big innings and has slowed down considerably, also with the century approaching. He takes a single off Ashwin's first ball to move to 95 and a couple of deliveries later Franklin pulls a short ball through the leg side for a boundary.

NZ 1st inns: 209-4 (50 ovs)

New Zealand have scored 100 runs so far from 19 overs after the lunch break. Ashwin comes on to bowl his 12th over. There is a huge appeal for a catch down the leg side against Franklin but there is no obvious edge and the umpire turns it down.

Once again it is a maiden over from Ashwin, who has been quite tight in his last few overs.

Ojha takes over from Yadav from the other end. He bowls a rank long hop to Taylor, who attemps to hit it out of Bangalore but fails to connect. That was an easy opportunity to score some free runs but Taylor missed.

A maiden over from Ojha as NZ reach 209 for four after 50 overs.

Yadav once again bowls a bouncer to Franklin who steers in fine on the leg side for one. Two balls, Taylor slaps a short ball over the point region for a boundary to move into the 90s.

He takes a single from the next ball to move to 94 from 84 balls and Franklin does the same from the next ball.

Franklin gets off the mark with two runs down the ground off Yadav. But the pacer bowls a bouncer at him which Franklin ducks under. A couple of balls later Franklin is unable to duck under quickly and is hit on the shoulder.

In the next over, from Ashwin, Taylor takes a single to bring up New Zealand's 200, in the 47th over. Franklin has no problem is seeing out the next five balls to end another good over from Ashwin as the runs dry up for the Kiwis.

WICKET: Flynn lbw b Ashwin 33 (53b)

India get the crucial breakthrough as Flynn falls leg before wicket for 33 to Ashwin as he misses the sweep shot. This is the third time in a row that Flynn has been dismissed LBW attempting the sweep against Ashwin.

New Zealand were running away with the game but poor shot selection from Flynn has hurt their progress.

Left-hander James Franklin is the new batsman for New Zealand and he is struck on the pad first ball but the appeal is turned down.

NZ 1st inns: 196-3 (42 ovs)

Ashwin switches to round the wicket to Taylor, with a view to bowl straighter at him and stop the flow of boundaries.

Ashwin is bowling it quick and flat to Taylor, who is content to watch out the six deliveries of the over to concede a maiden.

Yadav, who was hit for runs in his first spell, comes back to replace Zaheer. Taylor slashes at a wide delivery from Yadav over the point region for a boundary and flicks the next ball behind square leg for consecutive fours.

An angry Yadav fires a quick bouncer which Taylor ducks under to end the over.

NZ 1st inns: 187-3 (40 ovs)

New Zealand nearly throw away a wicket off the first ball of Zaheer's new over. The two batsmen attempt a quick single and there is some hesitation before they sprint across. Taylor would have been back in the hut had Gambhir scored a direct hit from midwicket and he immediately apologises to his partner Flynn.

Flynn then clips a full delivery from Zaheer behind square on the leg side for two runs. The left-hander slaps the last ball of that over through the covers for a boundary, which takes him to 32 from 49 balls.

And now Flynn is growing in confidence. He presents the full face of the bat and drives a full delivery back past the bowler Ashwin for a lovely boundary.

New Zealand have been on the attack after the lunch break, scoring 40 runs in six overs in the post lunch session.

Taylor is just dealing in boundaries at the moment. He smashes a full delivery from Zaheer through the covers and punches the next ball back past the seamer for another four.

Zaheer puts extra effort in the next delivery which bounces a bit more which Taylor fends off to the point region for one.

With Taylor attacking from the other end, Flynn is content to defend and play himself in as he plays out a maiden over from Zaheer.

Ashwin replaces Ojha, who got a hammering in his previous over. Taylor plays the first ball to point for one while Flynn throws his ball at a wide delivery, and the outside edge falls wide of the slip fielder for a boundary.

Flynn, who fell twice LBW to Ashwin playing the sweep, can't resist the shot for much longer. He attempts another sweep and misses but the huge appeal is turned down by the umpire.
12:30   Taylor hits 50 from 46 balls
- Scorecard

NZ 1st inns: 141-3 (33 ovs)

Zaheer is back in the attack and he replaces Ashwin, who bowled just one over after the break.

He starts from round the wicket as the first ball is down the leg side while Taylor defends the next ball. Taylor then finds the gap to perfection in the cover region as Ojha sprints after the ball and makes a diving stop on the ropes to stop a boundary and give three runs. That stop has hurt Ojha on the right elbow as the physio rushes out to attend him.

Taylor gives Ojha further pain with back to back boundaries to start his next over. He hits the first ball through the thirdman region and then plays the fine sweep to get two fours in a row,

The Kiwi captain brings up his half-century in some style as he slaps a full delivery through the covers for a boundary. Taylor took just 46 balls to bring up his fifty and he lofts the final ball of that over the point fielder for another boundary to make it four fours in that row.

Ojha was hit for 16 runs in that over as Taylor went after him.

NZ 1st inns: 122-3 (31 ovs)

Play resumes in the post session lunch with Ashwin starting proceedings. Taylor works the second ball on the leg side for one. Flynn, who was dismissed to Ashwin twice in the first Test, is a bit more cautious against the off-spinner as he defends it on the leg side. The last ball is steered wide of Yadav at point who runs after the ball and then slides but misses the ball as it goes for a four.

It's spin from both ends as Ojha comes on from the other end.

Taylor welcomes him after lunch with a cracking drive through the cover region for a boundary. What a shot!! He is beaten two balls later as he attempts to cut the ball.

The Kiwi captain is in no mood to stop. He goes across and slog sweeps Ojha over the midwicket region for another boundary and follows that with a single to race to 37 from 36 balls.

LUNCH - DAY 1

Zaheer comes on to bowl his 10th over of the innings. He keeps it full, looking to get the swing going against Flynn. The left-hander is content to defend the final over of the session. He flicks the last ball of that session to the leg side to get two runs as New Zealand reach 108 for three in 29 overs at lunch on the opening day.

Taylor is unbeaten on 27 from 28 balls, while Flynn is on seven from 18 balls.

Ojha was the most successful bowler for India with two for 24 in ten overs, while Zaheer claimed one for 33 and also had a catch dropped at third slip by Kohli.

New Zealand could have been sitting pretty at lunch had it not been for Guptill's wicket, who was looking good on 53 but gave his wicket away with a wild shot a few overs before the lunch break.

New Zealand took a few chances in the session and scored at a good rate of 3.73 runs per over. But they also need their batsmen to stay out in the middle and score the big hundred if they have to put India under pressure.

Taylor continues to play reckless shot despite the lunch break five minutes away. He goes across and looks to sweep Ojha through the off-side but luckily for him the ball falls just short of Gambhir at square leg.

Dhoni finally brings the field in, asking the NZ batsmen to take a few chances before the lunch break.

Taylor does not take the gamble after that horror shot off the first ball and defends the rest of the over as Ojha bowls his third maiden over.

Taylor punches a short ball from Zaheer through the covers as it speeds across the turf for a four to take the Kiwi skipper to 24 from 20 balls. That boundary also took the Kiwis past the 100-run mark in the 27th over.

The right-hander then steers it past the point region as Tendulkar sprints after the ball and makes a good sliding stop to keep it down to three runs.

There is a huge appeal for leg before against Flynn as Zaheer strikes him on the pads with one that came in sharply but it is turned down.

Against the run of play, New Zealand lose the key wicket of Guptill, who is caught on the leg side for 53. The right-hander looked to chip it over the leg side but hit it straight to Gautam Gambhir at midwicket.

That was a reckless shot from Guptill as he gave his wicket away rather tamely at just the wrong time for NZ. "No patience" screams Simon Doull from the commentary box.

Daniel Flynn is the new batsman for Kiwis. Taylor nudges it down the leg side for another couple of runs as NZ reach 92 for three in 24 overs.

Ojha has two for 19 in eight overs.

It's spin from both ends now as Ojha takes over from Yadav, who bowls a maiden over to Guptill.

Ashwin comes on to bowl his second over. He starts with a quicker delivery but it goes down the leg side and Ashwin beats Taylor after that with a delivery that goes straight on after pitching.

WICKET: Williamson lbw b Ojha 17

Ojha claims his first wicket, getting Williamson leg before wicket for 17 from 44 balls. Ojha got that one to come in with the arm as the right-hander looked to defend the ball but missed and was caught in front of the stumps.

The Williamson-Guptill partnership got 63 runs in 98 balls for the second wicket for New Zealand to help them recover after an early wicket.

Williamson was struck quite high on the right leg, on his thighs as he bent forward to defend the ball. He could count himself unlucky to be ruled out leg before wicket after being hit so high but it looked quite close to the naked eye.

Captain Ross Taylor is off the mark with a single and Guptill gets one off the next ball. Taylor is beaten as he attempts to hit Ojha through the off-side. He seems in a positive moods as he plays the sweep shot but hits it to the square leg fielder.

Williamson clips Yadav through the midwicket region for two runs before punching the next ball past the mid-off fielder for a four.

No runs from the last three balls of that over as NZ reach 33 for one after 11 overs.

India still have a very attacking field and the Kiwi batsmen are now getting some easy runs. Guptill flicks it past short leg fielder to get a couple of runs and then hits it to the midwicket region for another couple.

Zaheer switches to over the wicket and Guptill picks a single from the last ball to make it 38 for one after 12 overs.

It has become very dark in Bangalore as the floodlights have been turned on. Guptill cuts a short ball past point to get a couple of runs and defends the next ball back to the bowler.

Not many people in the stadium today as most of the stands wear a deserted look.

Guptill clips it to midwicket to get a single as three runs come from that over as the visitors reach 23 for one after nine overs.

DROPPED! Zaheer gets Guptill (17) to edge an outgoing delivery as Kohli spills a simple catch at third slip. Infact, the ball was heading straight into the hands of Suresh Raina at second slip but for some strange reason Kohli attempted a diving effort to his right and grassed it.

Guptill then rubs more salt on Zaheer's wounds as he strokes it back past the bowler to the vacant mid-on region for a boundary.

Zaheer then beats Guptill yet again with the outswinger which moves away and bounces a bit too.

New Zealand are 27 for one after ten overs with Guptill on 21 from 35 balls and Williamson on six from 20 balls.

Zaheer getting a fair bit of assistance as he keeps the batsmen guessing moving the bowling in and away from the batsmen.

He has been good in his first spell, taking one for 12 in four overs as NZ reach 20 for one after eight overs.

Sanjay Manjrekar supports Dhoni's decision to open the bowling with Ojha. "Excellent move by Dhoni..Getting Ojha into action early for 2 resaons..bit of moisture in the pitch & Kiwis tentativeness against spin," he writes on Twitter.

Williamson clips Zaheer on the leg side and gets three runs as the Kiwis look to get the scoreboard moving. Guptill then steals a quick single to mid-off while Williamson does the same off the next ball as he drops it on the off-side.

Zaheer then beats Guptill with the outgoing delivery that moves quite a bit and just misses the edge. But Guptill continues to grow in confidence as he crashes a short delivery past the cover fielder for a boundary.

The Kiwi batsmen are gaining in confidence after struggling in the first couple of overs.

NZ 1st inns: 8-1 (5 ovs)

Williamson steers Zaheer on the off-side to open his account. Guptill then plays him on the leg side to get himself off the mark as New Zealand get two runs from that Zaheer over to reach four for one after four overs.

That last delivery must have encouraged Dhoni to continue with Ojha. Guptill charges down the wicket and tries to whack it through the leg side but gets an inside edge. The next ball is well flighted as Guptill defends and does the same with the next ball.

Guptill finally breaks the shackles as he lofts Ojha over the mid-off fielder for the first boundary of the Test match.

After five overs, New Zealand are eight for one.

Despite Zaheer getting the early wicket, Dhoni decides to continue with Ojha at the other end. Guptill defends the first three balls while the fourth ball is stopped by Umesh Yadav.

Ojha is unlucky not to get a wicket with the final delivery of that over. He gets one to turn sharply and bounce a bit extra which takes the outside edge of Guptill's bat and flies past Sehwag at first slip to get him two runs and get New Zealand off the mark.

WICKET: B McCullum lbw b Zaheer 0 (5b)

Zaheer Khan to bowl the second over with three slips and a gully in place. The first two balls are pitched up on the middle and leg stumps which he defends, while the next two balls move away from McCullum.

Zaheer then gets the next ball to come in which beats McCullum's defence and traps him plumb leg before wicket for a duck.

That's the early wicket India wanted as Kane Williamson walks out to bat.

Brendon McCullum walks out to open the innings with Martin Guptill in overcast conditions at the M Chinnaswamy stadium in Bangalore.

And surprisingly, India get left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha to open the bowling. Wonder what MS Dhoni is thinking!!

The first ever time in history of Indian cricket that a spinner has opened a bowling for India in Tests.

The first ball is right up to the batsman as Guptill defends it back to Ojha, while the second is down the leg side. Ojha bowling it slower in the air and giving it a lot of air but Guptill is content to defend as Ojha stars with a maiden.
