Chawla brings some relief to the Indian camp with the wicket of Root, who spoons a simple catch back to the bowler. The debutant impressed with a solid knock of 73, having hit four boundaries in his 229-ball knock.

Root, 21, spent 290 minutes at the crease in his first ever innings in Test cricket on a wicket where runs were very hard to score.

Root and Swann added 60 runs in 22.5 overs for the eighth wicket to take England past the 300-run mark.
