Scorecard

Nothing is impossible when Dhoni is out in the middle it seems. At one point, it seemed he would struggle to make it till the end as he played dot balls after dot balls and looked quite jaded, but he changed gears at just the right time.

With 13 runs needed from the last over, Australia were always the favourites going into the final over. But Dhoni was calm as ever and that six off Clint McKay turned the tide in India's favour.

Dhoni now averages a massive 104.89 in successful run chases and he yet again proved why he is rated as one of the best finishers in the game.

Rajneesh Gupta on Twitter: Highest batting avg in successful chases (Min.25 inns): Dhoni (104.89), M Clarke (89.20), M Bevan (86.25) & M Hussey (83.87)

This was India's biggest successful run chase in an ODI in Australia.

The victory boosts India points tally as they are second with eight points, one behind Australia. Sri Lanka are yet to win a match in two attempts.

Man of the match Gautam Gambhir took a moment to remember team-mate and good friend Yuvraj Singh, who is undergoing treatment in the US.

"I want Yuvraj to get well soon. We miss him thorougly and we all hope he comes back into the Indian team soon," Gambhir said after the match."

Dhoni is also sure that Yuvraj would come back stronger.

"He loves challenges and this is another challenge in his life and I am sure he will come out strong."

Ashwin tried a fancy shot first up against McKay as he walked across the stumps and tried to flick it over the short fine leg fielder, but missed.
13 needed from the last six balls

Ashwin got a single through the leg side off the next ball...12 needed from the last five balls

Dhoni then made up for all the dot balls and the struggle but hitting a full delivery down the ground for a huge six. (6 needed from the last three balls)

McKay then bowled a high full toss that was deemed a no-ball. Dhoni swung it over midwicket but holed out to Warner, who realised the situation and threw the ball back quickly but India got a double for a total of three runs from that ball. (3 needed from the last three balls)

Dhoni ended the match by flicking it fine and getting three runs in the process.

India reached 270 for six in 49.4 overs to win by four wickets and four balls to spare. Dhoni finished unbeaten on 44 from 58 balls, with just a six, while Ashwin made just one.

This is India's first victory over Australia at Adelaide.

Live scorecard

India 257-6 (49 ovs)

The wicket of Jadeja hampered India further. Dhoni was clearly struggling as he hit the next two balls straight to the fielders to concede dot balls.

India's best finisher in ODIs, Dhoni, was struggling to keep pace in the middle.

India now needed 13 from the last over for victory and R Ashwin had a big task on hand.

Live scorecard

WICKET!!! India 257-6 (48.4 ovs)

Jadeja c Ponting b Doherty 12 (8b)

The match is evenly poised. Jadeja pulls the first ball from Doherty but sharp fielding from Warner at deep midwicket keeps the batsmen down to a single.

Dhoni manages a single off the next ball, hitting it straight to point.

Jadeja is the one taking risks as he chips Doherty over the cover region for another couple of runs.

But he holed out off the next ball as he tried another big hit on the leg side. Ponting took a comfortable catch at deep midwicket to send back Jadeja for 12. India were 257 for six in 48.4 overs, needing 13 from eight balls for victory.
16:31
Live scorecard

India 253-5 (48 ovs)

New man Ravindra Jadeja looked to take the risks and find the boundaries. He chipped McKay over the covers for a double and then clipped him fine on the leg side off the next ball for three runs.

Dhoni drove McKay down the ground for a single as India reached 250 for five in 47.4 overs.

India are 253 for five in 48 overs, needing 17 from the last two overs for victory.

16:28
Live scorecard

India 243-5 (47 ovs)

Raina's wicket tilts the balance slightly in Australia's favour. Jadeja also nearly loses his wicket but a poor throw from Harris back to the bowler gives him time to recover.

It turned out to be a good over for Australia as Doherty conceded just four runs to leave India at 243 for five in 47 overs.

India now need 27 from the last three overs.
16:23
Live scorecard

WICKET!!! India 239-5 (46.1 ovs)

Raina b Doherty 38 (30b, 3x4, 1x6)

India lost the key wicket of Raina when he was bowled by Doherty for a quick 38 from 30 balls as he tried to whip him across the line.

It was an important breakthrough for Australia as Raina threatened to take the match away from them. And with Dhoni struggling at the other end, Raina was key to India's run chase.

16:21
Live scorecard

India 239-4 (46 ovs)

Australia's most successful bowler Clint Mckay (3 for 21 in seven overs) is back into the attack with India needing 40 from the last five overs.

The only risk Dhoni was willing to take was with the running between the wickets. He took on Ricky Ponting in the covers but despite a hit direct, Dhoni was well inside the crease and also got an extra run in the process.

Raina got the boundary for India in that over as he clipped McKay over the cover fielder and ended the over with a single.

India now needed 239 for four in 46 overs, needing 31 from the last four overs.
16:14
Live scorecard

India 230-4 (45 ovs)

Dhoni is 18 from 39 balls but he seems content to play the waiting game. Raina is the one who will be taking the risks but so far, they are ready to wait.

They pick off the required eight runs from that over with some good running between the wickets. Dhoni, twice, took on Forrest at the cover boundary to take two runs.

Dhoni and Raina also brought up the 50-run partnership in 64 balls for the fourth wicket.
16:10
Live scorecard

India 222-4 (44 ovs)

Finally, India break free with Raina lofting Doherty over midwicket for a six. That six brought India some reprieve after a few quiet overs comprising mainly of singles and twos.

India got eight runs from that Doherty over and now need 53 from 42 balls for victory.

Dhoni picks up a couple from the first ball of that over from Harris but follows that with two dot balls as the required run rate starts to creep up again. Just five runs from that over from Harris as India reach 222 for four in 44 overs, needing 48 from the last six overs at eight runs per over.

16:03
Live scorecard

India 209-4 (42 ovs)

Doherty is back in the attack now. He starts with a wide first up but a couple of balls later beats Dhoni with one that turned slightly and Wade nearly pulled off a sharp stumping.

India also go past the 200-run mark in that over, but still boundaries were hard to come with the left-arm spinner giving away just five runs in that over.

As Rajneesh Gupta points out on Twitter: "Just 18 runs in the Batting Powerplay! Raina 10 off 11 balls, Dhoni 7 off 19 balls (13 dots!)"

The quick dismissals of Gambhir and Rohit was the turning point for Australia.

Dhoni made 10 from 28 balls, while Raina was on 18 from 17 balls as India made 202 for four in 41 overs.

Harris comes back for a new spell, replacing Christian, who did a good job by giving away just 45 runs in his ten overs.

India collect nine runs from the Harris over courtesy of some quick running between the wickets, leaving the equation at 61 needed from the last eight overs.
15:54
Live scorecard

India 197-4 (40 ovs)

McKay starts the 39th over with a wide but follows that with three dot balls to Raina to increase the pressure on India. Raina breaks the shackles somewhat by clipping McKay behind square on the leg side for a much needed boundary, the first after a gap of six overs.

India reach 194 for four in 39 overs, needing 76 from the last 11 overs for victory.

Dhoni's tactics continue to amaze. He still does not seem in a hurry. The India captain plays out the first ball of Christian's next over before taking a single off the fourth ball of the over.

Warner misfields again and gifts Raina an easy single off the next ball. Dhoni also get a single on the off-side to end the over as India reach 197 for four in 40 overs, needing 73 runs from the last 10 overs for victory.
15:46
Live scorecard

India 187-4 (38 ovs)

Finally, Dhoni makes contact with the ball but only a single to deep extra cover to move to three from 17 balls.

Are India leaving too much for the end? It's only singles at the moment despite the Powerplay in operation.

When will Dhoni and Raina try to break free remains to be seen. Another tidy over from Christian as he concedes just five in his ninth over.
15:41
Live scorecard

India 182-4 (37 ovs)

Dhoni seems to be struggling at the moment, as he misses a few deliveries outside the off-stump. He has only made two from the 15 balls he has faced as India get just three runs from the last two overs.

India need to do something now. Someone has to take the risk and put the innings back on track.
15:38
Live scorecard

India 181-4 (36 ovs)

McKay has taken three wickets and interestingly each of his wickets have come off the first ball of each spell.

India have two new batsmen at the crease now, in Raina and Dhoni. They will need to get going quickly or else the required run rate will start creeping again.

India are 179 for four in 35 overs, and they are forced to take the Batting Powerplay. With two new batsmen out in the middle, it is virtually difficult for India to take advantage of the fielding restrictions.

It's a good start for Australia in the Powerplay as Christian conceded just two runs in the 36th over.

The match seems set for a close finish, with India needing 89 runs from the last 14 overs.

15:28
Live scorecard

WICKET!!! India 178-4 (34.1 ovs)

Gambhir lbw b McKay 92 (111b, 7x4)

McKay gets his third wicket of the innings. This time it is the big wicket of Gambhir, who was looking good on 92. The left-hander walked across his stumps and tried to play it on the leg side for a single but was caught in front.

Was this the turnaround that Australia were waiting for?

India, looking good for victory, have now lost two wickets for 12 runs in the space of 15 deliveries.

India though have a slight edge, needing 92 runs from 95 balls with six wickets in hand.

15:25
Live scorecard

India 178-3 (34 ovs)

New batsman Suresh Raina gets off the mark with a boundary through the fine leg region as Harris drifts on the left-hander's pads as India get eight runs from that over.

And talking about Rohit Sharma throwing his wicket, here is what Sanjay Manjrekar wants India coach Duncan Fletcher to do. "if i was indian coach i would make rohit sharma write a 100 times in his book ' i will not hit the ball in the air" he writes on Twitter.

Gambhir also nearly gives his wicket away. The left-hander tries to chip Christian over the cover region as Warner makes a valiant effort leaping high in the air. Raina also has an anxious moment off the final ball of that over as a huge appeal for LBW is turned down.

15:18
Live scorecard

WICKET!!! India 166-3 (32.2 ovs)

R Sharma c Starc b Harris 33 (41b, 1x4, 1x6)

All India needed at the moment was for the two batsmen to stay in the middle for the next five overs atleast. But Rohit did exactly the opposite!

He tried to take on Harris, one of Australia's top bowlers, and lofted him straight into the hands of Starc at long-off. Rohit looked in complete control during his knock of 33 from 41 balls, but he threw it away with a poor shot.

Rohit and Gambhir added 76 runs in 85 balls for the third wicket.
15:16
Live scorecard

India 165-2 (32 ovs)

It's getting a bit desperate for Australia now. Ryan Harris is now introduced for his second spell, but India continue playing in their own style.

It's all singles for the two batsmen and waiting for the bowlers to err. And that is what happens as Harris drifts on Gambhir's pads which he clips to the fine leg region for a four to move to 82.

They milk four runs from the next over from Christian as India slowly inch towards the target with good sensible batting.
15:09
Live scorecard

India 155-2 (30 ovs)

Christian back into the attack to replace Doherty who bowled four lacklustre overs for 22 runs.

Meanwhile, Sanjay Manjrekar wants Rohit Sharma to show the Kadoos [proud] Mumbai attitude to the Aussie bowlers and not throw his wicket away.

For now, Rohit is doing that to perfection as he drives Christian through the covers for a four as India start to take a grip of the proceedings. Rohit is on 31 from 35 balls, while Gambhir has made 77 from 96 balls.

India need 115 runs from the last 20 overs for victory. That would be a below par score in T20 cricket. Can India go on to achieve the score?
15:03
Live scorecard

India 148-2 (29 ovs)

David Warner misfields as he comes in quickly trying to prevent a single but in the ends up conceding one. It is going according to script for the Indians as they get another four runs from the Doherty over.

And now it's turn of Ricky Ponting to misfield as he allows an easy single. A couple of balls later, Gambhir and Rohit bring up their 50-run partnership off 61 balls.

And Rohit breaks the shackles soon after when he pulls a short ball from Starc over square leg for a six, his first boundary hit after 30 balls. The next ball is calmly played on the off-side for a single and Gambhir repeats the same as 10 runs come from that Starc over.

14:57
Live scorecard

India 135-2 (27 ovs)

India are having it quite easy against the spinners. Doherty is not making any sort of impact as Sharma and Gambhir pick another five runs from his third over. Without taking any sort of a risk, India are going at nearly five runs per over and building a good platform for the rest of the batsmen to follow.

Already the duo have added 42 runs from 49 balls for the third wicket.

With the spinners not making any impression, Australia bring back Starc hoping for a breakthrough. But India, for the moment, are content to play the waiting game as they pick four singles from the Starc over.

14:50
Live scorecard

India 125-2 (25 ovs)

Like India earlier, Australia also allowing the game to drift in the middle overs. Gambhir and Rohit help themselves to five singles off Doherty's second over. Gambhir, in particular, seems keen to make every ball count as he is using his feet quite well against the spinners.

Rohit also has got off to a good start and the scoreboard is moving at a good rate for the visitors.

At the halfway stage the match is evenly poised as India reach 125 for two, needing another 145 runs from the last 25 overs.

Gambhir (66 from 80 balls) looks good for a big knock, while Rohit has made a confident start with 12 from 21 balls.
14:45
Live scorecard

India 112-2 (23 ovs)

A good determined innings from Gambhir here. Left-arm spinner Xavier Doherty into the attack now and Gambhir cuts the first ball past point for a double.

Xavier bowls a wide one down the leg side which wicketkeeper Wade misses and Rohit makes Gambhir sprint hard for the third run.

Eight runs from Doherty's first over as India starting to keep the runs flowing in the middle overs. And Rohit and Gambhir milk Hussey for five singles from the next over.

The first three overs of spin from Hussey and Doherty have fetched India 17 runs.
14:38
Live scorecard

India 103-2 (21 ovs)

A lot will also depend on how the Indian batsmen run between the wickets. Christian is doing a good job for Australia with his medium pacers. He gives away just three runs in the 20th over for good figures of none for 19 in four overs.

Meanwhile, Australia bring on part-timer David Hussey. It will be interesting to see if Gambhir will take on the spinner since he loves to attack the slow bowlers.

Rohit takes a single off Hussey's first ball to help India reach 100 after 20.1 overs. Gambhir also tickles one round the corner for another single. But India can only get four singles in that over as Wade behind the wickets offers Hussey plenty of advice on how to bowl and what to bowl!
14:32
Live scorecard

India 96-2 (19 ovs)

Rohit Sharma is the new batsman for India and he gets off the mark with a single off the first ball he faces. A couple of balls later, Gambhir brings up his fifty as he clips McKay round the corner on the leg side for a boundary through the fine leg region.

It took Gambhir 64 balls to reach the landmark, having hit six boundaries in the process.
14:28
Live scorecard

WICKET!!! India 90-2 (18.1 ovs)

Kohli c Forrest b McKay 18 (28b, 1x4)

McKay does it again! Another reckless shot from the Indians costs them a wicket. Kohli charged down the wicket and tried to loft McKay over the off-side but ended up holing out to Forrest at deep extra cover.

That's poor piece of cricket from Kohli and he hands Australia the initiative.
14:26
Live scorecard

India 90-1 (18 ovs)

Gambhir looking to make something happen. He is charging down the wicket to medium pacer Christian but still he is getting only singles.

Meanwhile, Rajneesh Gupta adds some more stats to prove Sehwag's poor form. "Since making 219 v WI,Sehwag has aggregated 255 in 12 inns across different formats. On 6 occasions he failed to cross 10!" he writes on Twitter.

Kohli gets the much needed boundary, that India were looking for as he clips Christian through the midwicket region. It is India's first boundary after a long wait of nine overs.

14:19
Live scorecard

India 82-1 (17 ovs)

Clint McKay comes on for his second spell to replace Starc, who went for 35 runs in his first spell of six overs.

McKay started of well, taking one for two in his first two overs. The Australian plan is clear, bowling it just on and around the off-stump, while mixing their pace and hoping the Indian batsmen will force the issue and commit a mistake.

Gambhir has had enough of it. He charges down the wicket, trying to hit McKay down the ground, but doesn't connect it fully and it goes straight to the mid-off fielder.

Meanwhile, former India batsman Sanjay Manjrekar is unhappy with Sehwag's batting today. He writes on Twitter: "almost got himself run out before gifting his wicket away..all in the space of a few deliveries..really disappointed with sehwag today"

The boundaries have dried up and India dealing only in singles and twos at the moment. Just four runs from McKay's third over as India reach 82 for one in 17 overs and it is time for the drinks break.

14:10
Live scorecard

India 74-1 (15 ovs)

It's been nearly five overs since the last boundary was hit. Australia playing on Indian batsmen's patience, a tactic which they successfully executed in the Test series.

But nothing bothering Kohli and Gambhir at the moment as they are quite content to play at a steady rate.

Gambhir is 36 from 44 balls, while Kohli has made five from 19 balls.

Kohli nearly gets the boundary, in the next over from Starc, but some good fielding from the Australian fielders on the boundary ropes kept them down to three.

India, it seems, are keen not to lose any more wickets and build a partnership here with some good running between the wickets.

They managed to pick a run off every delivery in that over Starc to take India to 76 for one in 15 overs.

14:03
Live scorecard

India 61-1 (13 ovs)

Australia have managed to stop the flow of runs with that wicket of Sehwag. McKay keeps it tight as he gives away just two singles in the 12th over.

Meanwhile, the in-form Virat Kohli is chasing a milestone. Opta Sports on Twitter: "32 - Virat Kohli needs 32 runs to become the 4th fastest player to 3000 ODI runs, after V. Richards, G. Greenidge and G. Kirsten.Talent."

Australia continue to squeeze the runs. Starc also comes up with a good tight over, giving away just two runs.

13:51
Live scorecard

India 52-1 (10 ovs)

It's a wicket maiden for Clint McKay to start his spell. Sehwag was dismissed off the first ball of that over, while Virat Kohli played out the remaining five balls.

India are 52 for one after ten overs. They need another 218 runs in the remaining 40 overs for victory.

Meanwhile, Sehwag's miserable tour continues. This was a good pitch for batting and he had got off to a good start, but he threw it away with another careless shot.
13:46
Live scorecard

WICKET!!! India 52-1 (9.1 ovs)

Sehwag c D Hussey b McKay 20 (21b, 3x4)

The bowling change works for Australia. Sehwag tries to flick Clint McKay through the leg-side but ends up getting a leading edge that is caught by Hussey on the off-side.

Sehwag, who made 20, added 52 runs for the opening wicket with Gambhir. This was India's best opening stand in all formats, since they have landed in Australia.
13:43
Live scorecard

India 52-0 (9 ovs)

Sehwag gets lucky when looking for a quick run he is sent back by Gambhir but the fielder misses the stumps from mid-on at the non-striker's end.

Gambhir also enjoys a slice of luck. He gets a thick edges as he attempts to play a wide delivery but it flies wide off Clarke at first slip for a four.

A couple of balls later, Gambhir makes up everyone stand up and take notice as he cracks a full ball through the covers for yet another boundary.

Gambhir is off to a good start, with 28 from 34 balls, while Sehwag is on 20 from as many balls.
13:39
Live scorecard

India 44-0 (8 ovs)

Gambhir is beaten by a good full delivery from Harris as it misses the outside edge. He flicks the next ball through midwicket for a couple. Just four runs conceded from Harris in that over.

Starc is lucky that the wide delivery down the leg side is brilliantly saved by wicketkeeper Matthew Wade diving to his right. Sehwag tries to attack a short ball from Starc but is foxed by the slower delivery as he misses the short ball completely.

But Sehwag was quick to pounce when the left-armer gave a bit of width to punch it through the off-side for a boundary to end the over.
13:31
Live scorecard

India 33-0 (6 ovs)

Ryan Harris also has a LBW appeal against Gambhir turned down. Replays confirmed that the ball had pitched outside the leg stump and umpire was right in ruling in favour of the batsman.

After giving away two fours in his previous over, Harris keeps it tight in the fifth over, giving away just two runs as India reach 26 for no loss after five overs.

Gambhir looks quite comfortable while driving through the off-side. He drives Starc through the covers for his third four and then cut the next ball for a single.

Sehwag is throwing his bat at anything wide. He slashed at a wide one from Starc but got a thick edge for two runs.
13:23
Live scorecard

India 24-0 (4 ovs)

Once again, a loud appeal for LBW against Gambhir, who is struck on the pads trying to play it on the leg side. But he responds in style as he pulls the next ball from Starc through midwicket for a boundary.

The Indian openers are looking confident at the moment. Sehwag is unbeaten on 11 from six balls, while Gambhir is on the same score from 18 balls.
13:18
Live scorecard

India 20-0 (3 ovs)

Sehwag gets going in the next over, with two boundaries off Ryan Harris in the next over.

Sehwag had his first boundary off the very next ball as he drove Harris through the off-side, in the third over. Harris responds with a bouncer but it is down the leg side and is ruled a wide delivery.

The next ball, wide outside the off-stump, was hit through the point region for another four.

Sehwag looked to attack as he chipped the final ball over the mid-off fielder for a couple of runs.
13:14
Live scorecard

India 7-0 (2 ovs)

A huge appeal for leg before wicket by Mitchell Starc against Gambhir as he hits him in front of leg stump, but umpire Paul Reiffel turns down the appeal.

Gambhir drives one down the ground and a bit of misfielding gets him a single to get Sehwag on strike. Sehwag lashes at a wide ball first up, and again brilliance from Australia in the field as David Hussey makes a good stop to keep it to a single.

Gambhir ends the over with a boundary as he charges down the wicket to Starc, gives himself room and whacks it through the covers.
13:11
Live scorecard

India 1-0 (1 over)

Ryan Harris starts proceedings for Australia and immediately Gautam Gambhir goes after a wide delivery...he is lucky not to have edged that! He decides against  chasing the wide ones after that but does it again off the fourth ball.

Gambhir gets off the mark as he punches one through point as Ponting comes up with a good save, but India get a single.
13:06
Live scorecard

Aus 269-7 (50 ovs)

Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir need to give India a good start if they have to chase down 270. Both the openers have been battling poor form since the Test series and they need to come good in this match.

Opta Sports point out an interesting stat on Twitter: "Virender Sehwag averages just 22.37 in ODIs against Australia, with no 50s from his last 10 innings against them. Underachiever."

12:54
Live scorecard

Aus 269-7 (50 ovs)

Australia managed just three boundaries in the last ten overs, two of which edges. India pulled back things superbly, courtesy of their pacers, as they conceded 57 runs in the last ten overs, while taking four wickets.

At one stage, when Peter Forrest (66) and David Hussey (72) were out in the middle, Australia looked good for a total around the 300-run mark.

Yadav was India's best bowler of the day as he claimed two for 49 in ten overs, bowling at a good pace throughout his spell. Zaheer (1-46) and birthday boy Vinay Kumar (2-58) used the variations to good effect to keep things tight in the final few overs.

Ashwin was a big disappointment as he gave away 47 runs in eight overs, while Jadeja (50 runs in ten overs) proved his usefulness with the ball.

Rediff.com's Statsguru Rajneesh Gupta brings out a few stats on Twitter with regards to India's run chase:

- Highest successful chase at Adelaide:303-9 by SL v Eng in 1999, Highest for India: 239-8 v SL in 2008

- India's highest successful chase vs Aus: 292-5 at Vizag in 2010. Highest successful chase vs Aus in Aus: 242-4 at Sydney in 2008

Can India chase down 270 despite the absence of Sachin Tendulkar? Will Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir come good today? Send us your views at

Live scorecard

Aus 269-7 (50 ovs)

Vinay to bowl the final over as India look to continue their good work in the last few overs. The decision pays off Vinay bowls Wade for 16 (18b), foxing him with a slower delivery.

Wade struggled for 18 balls and failed to get the big hits when it mattered.

Vinay mixing up his length and line, keeping the batsmen guessing at all times.

Quick thinking from Dhoni and a sharp throw to the bowler gets India another run out, as Clint McKay is run out for three.

Australia finish on 269 for seven in their 50 overs, with Ryan Harris on two (four balls).
12:15
Live scorecard

Aus 263-6 (49 ovs)

The pacers continue to pull back things for India as the boundaries have dried up. Even Wade is struggling to get going and both Wade and Harris are getting only singles off Yadav in the 49th over.

India's only blip in the final overs comes when Rohit misfields at long-on and ends up giving three runs instead of one.

WICKET!!! Aus 254-6 (47.4 ovs)

D Christian run out (Jadeja/Dhoni) 39 (36b, 2x4)

Zaheer continues India's good work in the final few overs. He concedes just three runs in the 47th over despite the best efforts of Wade and Christian to go for the big shots.

Zaheer gets his yorkers on target and all the two batsmen can do is defend and keep them out. The last ball of that over was a well directed bouncer as Christian missed his slash over the thirdman region.

Vinay also starts with a yorker in the next over, against Wade. Christian tries to sweep the next ball as the top edge goes over Dhoni for three runs. The pressure finally paid off as Christian tried to go for a tight second run, but Jadeja's sharp throw to Dhoni caught him short.

Christian is out after a quick knock of 39 from 36 balls, but even he struggled in the last few overs.

11:59
Live scorecard

Aus 245-5 (46 ovs)

Wade looking to attack as he takes on a short ball from Yadav, but gets a top edge that flies over the wicketkeeper for a boundary.

Christian also gets a streaky boundary in that over as a thick outside edge goes fine of the thirdman fielder.

Yadav is still bowling at a good pace and ends the over with two dot balls.

WICKET!!! Aus 236-5 (45 ovs)

D Hussey c Sehwag b Zaheer 72 (76b, 5x4)

Zaheer makes a crucial breakthrough for India with the wicket of dangerman Hussey for 72. The right-hander, who hit five fours in his 76-ball knock, tried to flick Zaheer on the leg side but Sehwag at square leg showed good reflexes to come up with a good sharp catch diving to his right.

Hussey added 56 runs in 53 balls for the fifth wicket with Christian (29 not out from 27 balls). Aus 235-5 (44.2 ovs)

The in-form Matthew Wade is the new batsman. He plays out two dot balls before a run of the final delivery of the over.

That ends a good over from Zaheer as he gave away just two runs, while picking up the wicket of Hussey

Aus 234-4 (44 ovs)

Vinay bowls a slow bouncer to Christian, who has enough time to adjust and pull it on the leg side for a single. Hussey gets lucky as he hit a ball straight to Rohit Sharma at point and wss sent back but the fielder decides against throwing the ball because there was no back up for the throw.

Vinay keeps it short and mixes his pace quite intelligently in that over as he gives away just four runs in that over.

Aus 230-4 (43 ovs)

Dhoni gets a whack on his knee as Jadeja fires a quicker one wide down the leg side. Hussey and Christian looking to be patient against the spinners as they look to collect the singles on offer. Hussey chips down the wickets and lifts Jadeja over the covers for a four and then a single to move to 70.

Jadeja concedes nine runs in that over to end his spell of ten overs, during which he gave away 50 runs.

Live scorecard

Aus 221-4 (42 ovs)

Jadeja, who bowled a good spell, is back into the attack. Christian plays the paddle sweep for a couple to get to 21 from 19 balls, while Hussey is on 62 from as many balls.

Another tidy over from Jadeja as he gives away just five runs, in his ninth over.

It's spin from both ends as Ashwin is brought on from the other end. Dhoni looking to finish off the spinners' quota of overs before the batsmen go out on an all-out attack in the closing overs.

Ashwin also keep things in check, as he concedes just four runs in that over.

Live scorecard

Aus 212-4 (40 ovs)

Vinay Kumar into the attack now. He has been a good bowler in the final overs in the IPL and India will be hoping he can keep the runs down.

Three singles off the first three deliveries as Vinay keeps the batsmen guessing with good variation of pace. Christian chips it back over the bowler, but Sehwag makes good ground at long-on to give away three runs.

Australia are 212 for four after 40 overs. They will be looking to add another 80-90 runs in the last ten overs and reach the 300-run mark.
11:29
Live scorecard

Aus 205-4 (39 ovs)

Christian's first boundary is rather streaky as an inside edge off Yadav misses the stumps and goes to the vacant boundary at the fine leg region.

Hussey gets the second boundary of that over as he drives Yadav through the covers despite the best of efforts from a diving Kohli.

Australia starting to take charge as 12 runs come from that over.

Christian brings up Australia's 200 as he picks up a double off Zaheer through the midwicket region. Zaheer foxes the youngster with a good slower delivery that was short in length as Christian is too early with his pull shot.

Live scorecard

Aus 187-4 (37 ovs)

All-rounder and big hitter Daniel Christian is the new batsman for Australia. Meanwhile, David Hussey completes his fifty from 54 balls as he gets a single on the leg side off Zaheer.

India need to get Hussey in the next few overs else he could be really dangerous in the final few overs.

Australian batsmen seemed to have made a habit of proving themselves right from the start. Opta Sports on Twitter: "Three of the current Australian ODI line-up have hit fifties on debut - David Hussey, Matthew Wade and Peter Forrest. Impression."

"Peter Forrest's score of 66 is the seventh highest by an Australian on ODI debut. Promising."

WICKET!!! Aus 179-4 (35.3 ovs)

P Forrest c Vinay Kumar b Yadav 66 (83b, 5x4, 2x6)

India's best bowler of the day, Umesh Yadav, is back into the attack. Australia, quite rightly, have taking the Batting Powerplay with two set batsmen at the crease.

The first ball of the Powerplay is sent crashing to the point boundary as Forrest cuts a short wide ball from Yadav.

But Yadav gets India the much needed wicket in that over. Forrest tries to pull a short ball but gets a top edge and is caught by Vinay at deep square leg after a fine knock of 66 from 83 balls, laced with five fours and two sixes.

That ends a good partnership for the hosts. Forrest and Hussey put on 98 runs in 106 balls for the fourth wicket to give Australia a good launching pad for the final overs.

Live scorecard

Aus 175-3 (35 ovs)

The Indians seems to be clueless at the moment. Vinay is off after just a single over and Ashwin replaces him. Ashwin has disappointed so far, giving away 38 runs in his six overs.

He continues to bowl without much of an impact. Hussey and Forrest collect five easy singles from that Ashwin over. Both the batsmen are using their feet quite well and hitting the ball into the gaps to keep the scoreboard moving.

Dhoni now brings his most experienced bowler Zaheer back into the attack after a poor two-over spell from Rohit.

Hussey flicks Zaheer to the fine leg region and gets two easy runs courtesy of some good running between the wickets. The next ball could have fetched more but for a diving stop from Dhoni to his left as Hussey tried to play it fine.

Interestingly, Hot Spot shows that Hussey got a bit of an edge before it hit his pads and was caught by Dhoni.

Forrest chips it through the square leg for another couple of runs followed by a single down the ground off the final ball of that over.

Aus 164-3 (33 ovs)

So that's a good start for Forrest, hitting a half-century on his debut. Incidentally, his batting partner, David Hussey, also hit a fifty on his debut, against West Indies in July 2008.

Forrest his his second six as he lofts Rohit over the long-off fielder, clearing the boundary by a long way. Australia looking good for a score of around the 300-run mark. India need to pick up a wicket or two and they need to do it at the earliest.
10:57
Live scorecard

Aus 154-3 (32 ovs)

India need a breakthrough at the moment! Not surprisingly, Dhoni brings in Vinay to provide him with a wicket.

The same old story continues though as Australia continue to milk the bowlers. Forrest hits a fifty on debut as he takes a single on the off-side. He took 71 balls to reach the landmark, hitting four boundaries and a six in the process.  Forrest also becomes the 11th Australian to score a fifty on his ODI debut.

Live scorecard

Aus 150-3 (31 ovs)

It's only singles when it comes to Jadeja. Another four singles off his eighth over as Australia reach 145 for three in 30 overs. Forrest looking good for a fifty on debut as he reaches 46 from 64 balls, while Hussey is settled on 33 from 36 balls.

Part-timer Rohit Sharma into the attack now. The two Aussie batsmen are not taking any risks, perhaps waiting for the Batting Powerplay now. They collect five singles from Rohit's first over as the hosts look to be inching towards a big total.

10:47
Live scorecard

Aus 141-3 (29 ovs)

Jadeja continues to keep things tight as he gives away three singles in his seventh over.

After a hammering in his previous over, Ashwin switches back to over the wicket. Ashwin continues to flight the ball and Forrest and Hussey look to pick him for singles and twos.

It's a near miss for Forrest off the final ball of that over. He came charging down the wicket from the bowler's end looking for a single, but was sent back. However, he just about made his crease as Dhoni threw it back to the bowler, who dislodged the bails. A direct hit would have made the difference.
10:42
Live scorecard

Aus 132-3 (27 ovs)

The spinners, Ashwin and Jadeja, have managed to keep things tight. Jadeja keeps Hussey glued at the batting end with a good tight line. The right-hander manages to avoid a maiden over as he gets a single off the final ball of that over.

But Australia break free in the next over as David Hussey hits Ashwin for a hat-trick of boundaries.

Hussey pulls a short ball through square leg for a four, followed by chipped boundaries through the midwicket region for another couple of fours. That also brings up the 50-run partnership between Forrest and Hussey for the fourth wicket off just 53 balls.

Australia have managed to take back the initiative as they stroked 13 runs from that over.
10:37
Live scorecard

Aus 118-3 (25 ovs)

Hussey and Forrest doing it quite sensibly here, just looking to collect the singles against the spinners, without taking any risks.

Three singles from that Ashwin as Australia reach 118 for three at the halfway point.

Usually, an ODI match gets boring from hereon till the Batting Powerplay comes into effect as both sides look to go through the motions and avoid risks.

Aus 115-3 (24 ovs)

Jadeja comes in from the other end to replace Yadav, who has bowled a superb spell of one for 18 in six overs.

Should Dhoni have continued with the seamers from that end atleast for another couple of overs?

Jadeja is bowling flat and quick and Australian batsmen are milking him around for singles. Dhoni is quick to shout at Jadeja in Hindi, asking him to flight the ball since the batsmen are not looking to attack.

Australia get six runs from that over, without much of a fuss. Forrest 39 (50b), Hussey 10 (14b)

Aus 109-3 (23 ovs)

Yadav bowls a short ball first up, but Forrest defends it on the off-side. A few balls later, good committment from Vinay at mid-on as he runs in, dives forward and hits the stump but Forrest has made his ground at the bowler's end.

He ends the over with a quick bouncer and Hussey promptly sways out of the way.

Dhoni continues to juggle the bowlers. Ashwin is back into the attack now after just one over from Jadeja in his second spell. It's a good over from Ashwin as he concedes just three singles in that over.
10:25
Live scorecard

Aus 101-3 (21 ovs)

Jadeja back into the attack for his second spell, replacing Ashwin, who gave 13 runs in his first two overs.

David Hussey drives to wide of the long-off fielder and good running between the wickets fetches him two runs.

India try to keep Forrest in check as they employ an extra fielder on the drive on the off-side for Jadeja. But Forrest has no problems in piercing the gap as he gets another boundary through the covers to take Australia past the 100-run mark. He now moves to 31 from 37 balls, while Hussey is on six.
10:21
Live scorecard

Aus 93-3 (20 ovs)

Australia does not boast of much experience in their lower middle order and India would do well to continue to exert the pressure and try to pick up another wicket or two.

Meanwhile, Michael Clarke's dismissal has also affected his average as Mohandas Menon states on Twitter: "With Michael Clarke's dimissal MS Dhoni (55.42) is now the only captain to average 50+ as ODI captain. Clarke now averages 49.70 as captain!"

There is no stopping Yadav the moment. His first ball is 151kmph as Forrest taps it on the off-side for a single. But the India pacer gives away just two singles in that over, for good figures of one for 15 in five overs.

Aus 93-3 (19 ovs)

Forrest ensuring that Australia don't get bogged down after Clarke's wicket as he hits Ashwin for back to back boundaries through the off-sides. He drove the third ball of that over through the covers for a four and then cut the next ball past the point fielder for the same result.

Forrest looks settled on 25 from 30 balls and David Hussey is on two.

A period of good, tight bowling from India has resulted in a wicket. Yadav strikes with the key wicket of Michael Clarke, who was foxed by the slower delivery and was bowled for 38.

Clarke tried to break the shackles after a quiet overs. He chipped down the wicket and gave himself room, but Yadav was equal to the task as he sent down a slower delivery. Clarke tried to adjust his shot at the last moment but ended up chopping it back on to his stumps.

Clarke was dismissed after a good knock of 38 from 43 balls, having hit five boundaries.

India take the Bowling Powerplay and Dhoni immediately introduces off-spinner R Ashwin.

Ashwin starts from round the wicket to both the batsmen. It's a neat first over from the Chennai off-spinner, giving away just three singles. Aus 79-1 (17 ovs)

Meanwhile, statsguru Mohandas Menon points out on Twitter: "MS Dhoni & Michael Clarke are the only two batsmen to average over 50+ as ODI captains, among those who have led in 30+ matches!"

Aus 76-2 (16 ovs)

Forrest, who is rated highly by his captain and current batting partner Michael Clarke, seems to be growing in confidence.

He steps down the wicket to Jadeja and lofts him back over his head for a huge six. Forrest looks so composed out in the middle and with such a perfect batting on offer, he could not have asked for a better start to his career.

The runs continue to flow as Australia reach 75 for two after 15 overs.

Yadav is bowling fast and the two Aussie looking to play cautiously against him. A good fast bouncer to Forrest at 149kmph and the right-hander gets out of the way in time. Yadav in midst of a good pacy spell, giving away just nine runs in three overs.

But Australia still on top, 76 for two in 16 overs, with Clarke on 35 from 37 balls and Forrest on 14 from 22 balls.

Umesh Yadav comes on to bowl, for the first time in the tri-series. He was India's best bowler in the four-match Test series with a haul of 14 wickets in which India were whitewashed 4-0.

Yadav starts off well with a maiden over to Clarke, who seems to have gone into a shell after Warner's wicket.

India have managed to pull back things with just four runs coming from the last four overs, and they also picked up the wicket of Warner.

Jadeja follows that up with another steady over, giving away just four runs.

Against the run of play, Australia lose a wicket. A piece of magic in the field by Rohit Sharma gets India the much needed breakthrough.

Warner cut a short ball from Vinay, which was brilliantly stopped by Rohit at extra cover. The two batsmen ended up running to the same end as Rohit took time and threw it to the non-striker's end, but Warner sacrificed his wicket in the end for his captain Clarke.

Warner is run out for 18 from 24 balls.

It's a maiden over from Vinay as Australia reach 53 for two in 10 overs, with Clarke unbeaten on 26 from 23 balls and debutant Peter Forrest yet to face a ball.

After a quiet start, Warner gets into the act with two boundaries off Vinay Kumar in the eight over. The first one was driven through the covers and a couple of balls later, he cut a short ball through the point region.

It's sunny out in the middle and the pitch looks perfect for batting. Australia seems to be heading for a huge score, going by how things are progressing at the moment.

Warner is on 17 from 18 balls and Clarke has raced to 25 from 17 balls. 34 runs have come from the last four overs, with seven boundaries.

Zaheer has been disappointing so far today. He comes round the wicket to Clarke, hoping to cramp him for room. But drops it short off the last of the ball of that over and the Australian captain promptly despatches it through square for his fifth boundary to race to 25 from 17 balls.

Another one from OptaJim on Twitter:

Warner has not had much of the strike, he is on eight from nine balls.

Good start for Australia, despite Ponting's early dismissal, who seems to be going through a low patch in ODIs.

From OptaJim on Twitter: "Ricky Ponting has scored 30 runs from his last five ODI innings. Slump."

Michael Clarke is the new man for Australia. While India rotate their squad, Australia have decided to experiment with their batting line-up with Ponting and Clarke getting a promotion.

Clarke takes advantage of the fielding restrictions, chipping Zaheer over midwicket for a boundary. The next ball is driven down the ground, past the mid-off fielder, for yet another four.

The next ball also seems heading to the boundary as Clarke cuts a short wide ball, but Vinay at the third man boundary makes an excellent diving stop to keep the batsman down to two.

WICKET!! Vinay gets the first wicket for India. Ponting tries to drive a wide outswinging delivery, but ends up gifting an easy catch to Virat Kohli at point.

Vinay loses a bit of concentration, in that over, bowling a wide followed by a no-ball. It's a free hit for Warner, but Vinay bowls a yorker, which the left-hander can only edge it on to his pads
