SL 152-2 (24.1 ovs) vs Aus 158; Target 152 in 41 overs

With back to back losses for Australia, the tournament has been thrown wide open. Sri Lanka seem to be getting back to their best form. They were unlucky to lose a close contest against Australia in their previous match, while they managed a tie against India. This convincing victory will give them a big boost for the remaining matches of the tournament.

After four matches, India are top with 10 points, followed by Australia on nine and Sri Lanka are still bottom with seven points.

The next match of the tri-series will be played on February 19, Sunday, when India take on Australia.

SL 152-2 (24.1 ovs) vs Aus 158; Target 152 in 41 overs

Jayawardene steps out to Christian and thumps him over the cover region for a boundary. In the same over, Chandimal strikes his first four, pulling a short ball from Christian through the leg side.

Jayawardene is complete control out in the middle. He has enough time to play a delightful cut shot against Lee that beat the thirdman fielder for a four to level the scores.

Chandimal steals a quick single off Christian in the next over to take Sri Lanka to victory.

Sri Lanka win by eight wickets with 101 balls to spare for their first victory in the tournament. In the process, they also gain a much needed bonus point.

Captain Jayawardene leads from the front with the bat, finishing unbeaten on 61 from 67 balls, hitting five boundaries.

WICKET!!! SL 133-2 (21.1 ovs) vs Aus 158 (40.5)
Target 152 in 41 overs

K Sangakkara c Doherty b Lee 30 (29b, 4x4, 1x6)

Sangakkara lashes at a wide delivery from Christian but his edge flies wide of the fielder at first slip for yet another boundary. He seems in a hurry as he drives a full ball through the covers for two more runs. He takes on the last ball, pulling it to the midwicket region for a single.

Sri Lanka take the Batting Powerplay hoping to finish off the match quickly.

Sangakkara tries to take advantage of the fielding restrictions as he tries to heave Lee on the leg side. But he fails to get it off the middle and is caught by Doherty at mid-on after a quick knock of 30 from 29 balls.

Sangakkara and Jayawardene put on 59 runs from 57 balls for the second wicket to take Sri Lanka closer to victory.

SL 126-1 (20 ovs) vs Aus 158 (40.5); Target 152 in 41 overs

Jayawardene and Sangakkara both employing against Doherty. Jayawardene got a single but off the next Sangakkara crashed him through square leg for a boundary.

The left-hander followed that up by charging down the wicket and lofting Doherty over the midwicket fence for a big six.

After 20 overs, Sri Lanka are sitting pretty on 126 for one, needing another 26 runs to win in 21 overs.

Jayawardene is on 49 from 57 balls, while Sangakkara has raced to 23 from 22 balls.

SL 114-1 (19 ovs) vs Aus 158 (40.5); Target 152 in 41 overs

The target is under 50 now as Jayawardene sweeps left-arm spinner Xavier Doherty over the short fine leg fielder for a boundary, in his first over.

In that same over, Kumar Sangakkara brings up an important milestone. Playing in his 315th match, the left-hander takes a single towards the long-on region to bring up 10,000 runs in ODIs. Sangakkara becomes the third SL player and the 10th overall to score 10,000 runs in One-Day Internationals.

His partner at the other end, Jayawardene, has also crossed the 10,000-run mark. Interestingly, out of the 10 players, who have reached that milestone, seven are from the subcontinent.

SL 102-1 (17 ovs) vs Aus 158 (40.5); Target 152 in 41 overs

McKay continues to keep it tight but runs keep flowing from the other end. Sri Lanka are set for a big win here, needing 66 from 27 overs for victory, with nine wickets in hand.

SL 95-1 (15 ovs) vs Aus 158 (40.5); Target 152 in 41 overs

Dan Christian is introduced into the attack. He nearly strikes off the first ball as Jayawardene edges trying to go after a wide delivery but wicketkeeper Wade failed to respond. The ball flew in the gap between the keeper and the first slip for a four.

A couple of balls later, Sangakkara charged Christian and lofted a wide delivery over the point region for the second four of the over. That boundary took Sangakkara's run tally in ODIs to 9998, just two short of the magical 10,000-run mark.

SL 86-1 (14 ovs) vs Aus 158 (40.5); Target 152 in 41 overs

There was no stopping Sri Lanka's charge despite the wicket of Dilshan. Sangakkara got his first boundary in some style when he drove an overpitched delivery from Lee back past the bowler. Sri Lanka got eight runs from that Lee over, leaving them to score 70 for victory from 28 overs.

McKay's next over also posed no problems for the Lankans as they strolled to four easy singles to reach 86 for one in 14 overs.

SL 74-1 (12 ovs) vs Aus 158 (40.5); Target 152 in 41 overs

Dilshan c D Hussey b McKay 45 (41b, 4x4, 1x6)

The two Sri Lankan openers are nicely settled. When the ball is not there to hit, they keep rotating the strike with singles. It goes to plan for Dilshan and Jayawardene as they six singles off Starc in the 11th over.

McKay continued bowling length balls in the good channel outside the off-stump. Jayawardene tried a wild heave over the off-side field but luckily for him he didn't connect it that well as it fell short of the fielder at mid-off.

Dilshan went after a wide delivery from McKay trying to blast it through the off-side but only got an edge which was taken by David Hussey at first slip.

Dilshan made 45 from 41 balls, hitting four fours and six. He added 74 runs in 70 balls for the opening wicket with Jayawardene to give Sri Lanka a flying start.

SL 66-0 (10 ovs) vs Aus 158 (40.5); Target 152 in 41 overs

Sri Lanka openers pick six runs from the McKay over as Sri Lanka go past 50 in that over.

Starc is back into the attack. He bowls it on Dilshan's pads, who tries to guide it fine but it hits his boot before the bat can come down. Umpire Billy Bowden gives it a dead ball for he thinks the batsman didn't attempt the shot and hence the four won't be counted.

If the boundaries are not coming, Dilshan and Jayawardene keep the runs coming with some quick running between the wickets as the score reaches 58 after nine overs.

Dilshan cuts the first ball of McKay's over through point for two runs and then takes a single off the next. Jayawardene then takes two runs towards the point region and gets another double on the leg side.

Sri Lanka are in complete command after 10 overs having reached 66 for no loss. Dilshan is 41 from 36 balls, while Jayawardene has scored 22 from 24 balls.

SL 47-0 (7 ovs) vs Aus 158 (40.5); Target 152 in 41 overs

Australia forced to make a change. Starc, who was hit for 21 runs in two overs, gives way to Clint McKay.

McKay is back on target in the first over as he starts with a maiden.

Lee continues despite being thumped for three back to back boundaries in his previous over by Dilshan.

Dilshan yet again thinks of pulling Lee but backs out of shot at the last moment. However, a few balls later he lashes at a wide delivery from Lee and sends it crashing past point for another four.

The way things are going at the moment, Sri Lanka could try for the bonus point. They need to score 152 in 32 overs or less for the bonus point.

SL 41-0 (5 ovs) vs Aus 158 (40.5); Target 152 in 41 overs

Despite being off to a shaky start, there is no stopping Dilshan. He pulls a short ball from Starc for a flat six over the square leg boundary, in the fourth over.

13 runs come from that Starc over as Sri Lanka are off to a flier.

In the next over, Dilshan hits Lee for a hat-trick of boundaries and on each occasion he takes on the short balls from Lee. The first one sped through midwicket while the second and third ones crashed into the square leg fence.

Despite things going so well for Sri Lanka, Dilshan attempts a reckless shot. He tries to play the Dil scoop against Lee's pace, but misses the ball completely but fortunately for him the ball was wide of the stumps.

Dilshan has raced to 24 from 19 balls, with three fours and a six, while Jayawardene is on nine from 13 balls.

SL 14-0 (3 ovs) vs Aus 158 (40.5); Target 152 in 41 overs

Mitchell Starc bowls a beauty to Dilshan, beating him all ends up with an outswinging delivery that went right across him. The Sri Lankan opens his account off the seventh ball he faces with a single on the off-side.

Jayawardene ends the over in some style as he drives Starc down the ground for a cracking boundary, the first of the innings.

Lee nearly got the wicket of Dilshan as the right-hander pulled a short ball which fell just inches short of Clint McKay running in from the fine leg boundary.

Another good probing over from Lee ends as Sri Lanka reach 14 after three overs.

14:18

SL 2-0 (1 over) vs Aus 158 (40.5); Target 152 in 41 overs

The fit-again Brett Lee starts proceedings for Australia and facing him will be Sri Lanka's current captain Mahela Jayawardene and former captain Tillakaratne Dilshan.

Lee is a bit rusty to begin with as he bowls a wide delivery first up. The second ball jumps on Jayawardene who defends it on the leg side and then takes a single off the next ball.

Lee bowls two good short balls at Dilshan, with the second one aimed at chest, which the right-hander fends somehow using his gloves. A good first from Lee.
13:54
- Live scorecard

Australia are bowled out for 158 in 40.5 overs. David Hussey top scores with a brisk knock of 58 from 64 balls, while Mitchell Starc chipped in with a 17 towards the end.

Following the Duckworth-Lewis calculations, Sri Lanka are set a revised target of 152 in 41 overs for victory.

Farvez Maharoof is the best bowler for Sri Lanka with impressive figures of two for 18 in eight overs, while Thisara Perera claimed two for 29 in seven overs.

Australia were tottering at 88 for six in 26 overs when rain intervened. But they recovered quite well after the rain break, scoring 70 runs in 15 overs, courtesy of Hussey, who made 43 from 44 balls after the resumption.

The onus now lays on Australia's bowlers to make a match out of this. If Tillakaratne Dilshan gets going, the contest could be over in a jiffy!

Aus 158 all out (40.5 ovs)

Xavier Doherty is the final batsman for Australia. Perera concedes just three runs in the penultimate over, while taking the key wicket of David Hussey.

Malinga comes in to bowl the final over, his eighth of the innings. He goes for a yorker first up but an inside edge gives Starc a single.

Doherty plays two dot balls as Malinga keeps firing those fast deadly yorkers before pinching a single off the fourth ball of that over.

Starc tries to take a quick single but he is run out for 17 as Kulasekara hits the stumps with a direct hit from mid-on.

Australia are bowled out for 158 in 40.5 overs.

WICKET!!! Aus 153-9 (39.2 ovs)

D Hussey c Thirimanne b Perera 58 (64b, 6x4)

Australia take the single over of Batting Powerplay that is available to them. Just three overs left, how much can Australia score off them?

David Hussey makes a good start in the Powerplay as he glances Kulasekara fine for a boundary on the leg side. But they cannot make much of the fielding restrictions and manage just seven runs from that over.

Perera comes to bowl from round the wicket. The first ball is wide outside the off-stump which Hussey lets go but he slashes the next ball, to hole out to the fielder on the cover boundary.

Hussey is out after a wonderful knock of 58 from 64 balls, hitting six fours in total.
13:32
- Live scorecard

Aus 146-8 (38 ovs)

Sri Lankan fielders seems to be suffering from the rain. The outfield has become damp and a lot of them are slipping. This time Dinesh Chandimal loses his footing to gift Starc an easy boundary at the thirdman region off Kulasekara.

Hussey completes his half-century in the next over as he cuts Malinga through point for two runs. Another important knock from Hussey as he brings up his fifty from just 58 balls.

Malinga seems to have got some control in his bowling with a tight over but he throws it away as he bowls a high bouncer that goes over Sangakkara to give away five wides.

And Australia take the only over of Batting Powerplay at the end of that over!

13:23
- Live scorecard

Aus 131-8 (36 ovs)

Herath, after a good first spell of one for 12 in five overs, is taken off and is replaced by Perera. Starc is batting confidently till he is beaten by a perfect outswinging delivery from Perera that misses the edge.

He tries to cut the final ball of that over but Dilshan comes up with a good save at point to deny them a run.

Malinga is lacking his usual killer instinct in the final overs. He bowls a gentle full toss which Hussey drives the ground for a four and then takes two runs off the next ball.

Malinga continues to falter and this time bowls a short ball which Hussey pulls effortlessly through midwicket for a run as 10 runs come from the first three balls of the over.

If one Hussey fails, then count on the other to deliver! David Hussey is scoring some vital runs for Australia. He has raced to 47 from 53 balls and is giving the total some respectability.
13:11
- Live scorecard

Aus 117-8 (34 ovs)

Malinga to Hussey and the right-hander refuses a single off the first ball and then takes a risky double off the next delivery.

David Hussey, on 33, gets his second chance as he is dropped by Mathews at short cover. He takes a single off the penultimate ball of the over leaving Starc just one ball to face from Malinga, but the left-hander steals a quick double from the last ball.

13:08
- Live scorecard

Aus 112-8 (33 ovs)

With Sri Lanka bowling and fielding so well, will Australia last out the 41 overs?

David Hussey takes a single off the first ball of Herath's over. Mitchell Starc is beaten off the first ball he faces from Herath, but slogs the next ball towards midwicket where misfielding from Maharoof gifts him a boundary.

Hussey holds the key here, he is on 31 from 41 balls, with three boundaries. Sri Lanka have contained him so far, it remains to be seen when he will look to attack.

WICKET!!! Aus 104-8 (31.2 ovs)

B Lee run out (Perera) 0 (9b)

The pressure is on Malinga in the field. David Hussey hits one towards deep cover where Malinga swoops in quickly but sends in a wayward throw as the batsmen take a single.

Brett Lee is content to see of the rest of the over as Herath continues to keep it tight. He now has figures of one for five in four overs.

And Sri Lanka bring back Malinga, hoping he can finish off the Australian tail.

David Hussey tries to steal a quick single but he is lucky that Jayawardene missed a direct hit at the bowler's end else it would have out.

But they get a run out off the very next delivery. Lee tries a similar risky run but Perera at mid-off is quick to the task as he breaks the stumps at the non-striker's end with a direct hit.

Lee is run out for a nine-ball duck.

- Live scorecard

Aus 102-7 (30 ovs)

David Hussey becomes the first Australian batsman to cross the 20-run mark. He drives Perera through the covers for two runs followed by a cut short through point for a boundary.

That four also takes Australia past the 100-run mark.

After 30 overs, Australia are tottering at 102 for seven. They just have 11 overs remaining now.

WICKET!!! Aus 95-7 (28.5 ovs)

C McKay lbw b Herath 3 (15b)

Herath strikes the first blow after the rain break. Clint McKay is caught on his crease as the quicker delivery from the left-arm spinner catches him plumb in front of the stumps.

McKay is leg before wicket for three as Australia continue to slip.

That was a nicely set up wicket. Herath kept tossing it outside the off-stump till that point before sending down his faster one, catching McKay by surprise.
12:46
- Live scorecard

Aus 93-6 (28 ovs)

Play resumes at the Sydney Cricket Ground. It's still a bit gloomy out in the middle.

Herath bowls the first over after the break. David Hussey plays out a maiden over.

Thisara Perera on from the other end. Clint McKay has a wild swing at a wide delivery but is beaten and is lucky not to have edged it. He gets a single off the third ball of that over as he plays a wide delivery to the thirdman region. Hussey also cuts the next ball and Malinga's fumble on the boundary gives Australia two runs when it should have been just one.

Five runs from that over from Perera.
12:38
- Live scorecard

Aus 88-6 (26 ovs)

D Hussey 15* (20b, 2x4), C McKay 0* (7b)

Finally, some good news from Sydney. The match will resume at 1235 IST and the match has been reduced to 41 overs per side.

It's advantage for Sri Lanka as Australia have only one over of Batting Powerplay remaining. Only one Sri Lankan bowler can bowl nine overs, while four bowlers can bowl eight overs each.

Australia will have another 15 overs to bat and they will look to make the most out of it. David Hussey, who was dropped on eight, will be the key for Australia as they look to post a decent total and make a match out of this!

RAIN STOPS PLAY! Aus 88-6 (26 ovs)

D Hussey 15* (20b, 2x4), C McKay 0* (7b)

It's still raining at the Sydney Cricket Ground and the covers are still on. The Australian players will be content sitting in the pavilion and hoping the rain continues, while the Sri Lankans will be keen to get the game started as soon as possible!

Meanwhile, a friend in Sydney says the rain could continue for another 30 minutes atleast. So we might have a wait of another 45 minutes before play can begin, provided the rain stops within the next 30 minutes.

RAIN STOPS PLAY! Aus 88-6 (26 ovs)

D Hussey 15* (20b, 2x4), C McKay 0* (7b)

It's turn for spin now as left-armer Rangana Herath is brought into the attack now. He starts with a wide down the leg side but concedes only a single in the rest of the over to make a tidy start.

At the halfway stage, Australia are tottering at 83 for six.

Meanwhile, it has started to rain, but not heavy at the moment as play continues. The groundstaff are ready to bring in the covers anytime now.

David Hussey starts the next over with a delightful boundary through the covers as Perera overpitches one. He plays out the next few balls before taking a single off the final ball of that over.

Finally, the umpires halt play and call both teams off the field as the drizzle gets a bit heavier.

Sri Lanka are firmly in the driver's seat at the moment and they will want play to resume at the earliest. This is their best chance to win their first match in the tournament after a close loss to Australia followed by a tie against India in their last two matches.

WICKET!!! Aus 81-6 (24 ovs)

Christian lbw b Perera 6 (13b)

Perera finally gets the wicket he deserved! Dan Christian is the man to be dismissed as he is ruled leg before wicket for six. The all-rounder played all over an incoming delivery but missed the ball and was struck on the pads.

The Australian innings in complete shambles now.

If not for those two dropped catches, Australia would have been in a much worse position now. But Sri Lanka still in command and they will need to snap up the remaining wickets quickly and bowl out the Australians around the 100-run mark.

Interestingly, Hawkeye replays show that the ball would have missed the leg stump.

It's a wicket maiden for Perera to leave the hosts reeling at 81 for six after 24 overs.
10:33
- Live scorecard

Aus 81-5 (23 ovs)

Another lifeline for Australia. This time it is the hardworking Maharoof who puts down a tough return catch on his follow through.

Christian, on five, hits one back to the bowler, who sticks out his right hand but fails to pouch it safely.

David Hussey is beaten off the final delivery of that over as he tries to cut a wide ball. Just one run from that Maharoof as Sri Lanka continue squeezing the Aussie batsmen.
10:27
- Live scorecard

Aus 80-5 (22 ovs)

Jayawardene once again impresses with aggressive brand of captaincy. He persisted with his pacers and even kept a slip, and was deservedly rewarded with that wicket of Forrest.

Can Australia recover from this top order failure to post a decent total? The in-form David Hussey needs to play a big knock and Daniel Christian also needs to prove his utility with the ball.

Thisara Perera comes into the attack. He should have picked up a wicket immediately but Malinga drops a sitter at thirdman. Hussey cut a short ball straight into the hands of Malinga, who put down the easiest of chances.

That drop could prove to be vital. How costly will that error prove? Infact, Hussey had started walking back to pavilion before Malinga goofed it up!

And to rub salt on Sri Lanka and Perera's wounds, Christian drove the next ball down the ground for a four and follows it up with a single. After that reprieve, Hussey is watchful for the remainder of the over.

A good first over from Perera.

WICKET!!! Aus 74-5 (20.3 ovs)

Forrest c Mathews b Maharoof 16 (26b, 3x4)

Hussey starts the over with a boundary as he flicks Maharoof through the midwicket region for his first four. Dilshan comes up with a brilliant diving save off the next ball at point to keep Hussey down to a single.

But Maharoof strikes off the next ball as Forrest edges it straight to first slip to be dismissed for 16.

10:18
- Live scorecard

Aus 69-4 (20 ovs)

Sri Lanka going for the kill now! Malinga is back into the attack after a super first spell when he got the wicket of Warner.

Good thinking by captain Mahela Jayawardene to get his premier strike bowler back into the attack. The move nearly pays off as Forrest has to fend a short ball but it falls in the vacant region on the off-side to get him a single.

David Hussey is watchful against Malinga as he plays four dot balls to end the 19th over.

The ball is doing a bit and Sri Lanka pacers using the conditions quite well. Forrest gets a single off the fourth ball of that over from Mathews, while David Hussey take three runs off the next ball. Forrest gets an easy boundary as Mathews drifts on the leg side which is glanced fine by the Aussie right-hander for a four.
10:09
- Live scorecard

WICKET!!! Aus 60-4 (18 ovs)

M Hussey c Sangakkara b Mathews 13 (23b, 1x4, 1x6)

The trend continues as Mathews keeps bowling a tight line and length to Hussey. The veteran left-hander breaks the shackles somewhat as he pulls a short ball for a six over midwicket.

But the bowler has his revenge as he gets Hussey caught behind for 13. The left-hander tried to cut an outgoing delivery but could only get a thin edge that was pouched by a delighted Sangakkara behind the stumps.

That's a big breakthrough for Sri Lanka as Australia are reeling at 60 for four after 18 overs.
10:02
- Live scorecard

Aus 54-3 (17 ovs)

Angelo Mathews is giving Forrest some easy runs here. A short wide delivery is promptly despatched to the thirdman fence by Forrest. Mathews has conceded 12 runs in his first two overs, releasing some of the pressure that Sri Lankan pacers had created in the early overs.

The fast bowlers have used the change of pace quite well to keep the Australian batsmen guessing. Infact, two of the wickets fell to slower deliveries, while the run rate has also been kept in check.

Maharoof keeps it tight against Hussey, bowling it just outside the off-stump and short of good length with intelligent change of pace. Just a single in that over from Maharoof, who has excellent figures of one for 12 in six overs.

Australia reach 54 for three in 17 overs as the players take the first drinks break.
09:56
- Live scorecard

Aus 48-3 (15 ovs)

Australia's most dependable batsman Michael Hussey is out in the middle now. He has a big task on hand at the moment.

Angelo Mathews is introduced into the attack. He starts with a slower delivery but Forrest drives over the cover fielder for his first boundary. Maharoof follows that over with a maiden over as Australia reach 48 for three after 15 overs.

Ian Chappell points out that Australia were 37 for three in a Test match against India at this venue last month. But they recovered courtesy of a triple century from Michael Clarke and centuries from Ricky Ponting and Michael Hussey to post well in excess of 600.

Hussey makes a confident start to his innings as he strokes Maharoof through the covers for a boundary.

Australian all-rounder Mitchell Marsh will miss the remainder of the season after suffering a lower-back bone stress injury. "He will have further scans tomorrow in Melbourne to determine the extent of the injury, which will help outline the period of rest required from cricket. We expect that he will not play as a bowler for the remainder of this season but will be in a position to provide further information once we have the results of tomorrow's scans," Cricket Australia physiotherapist Alex Kountouris said.

Opta Sports confirm Ponting's poor run on form on Twitter. "2 - Ricky Ponting is yet to pass double figures in this ODI series, with scores of 2, 1, 6 and 2 (today). Feeble."

Mohandas Menon also throws in a quick stat on Twitter. "Mike Hussey before this match averages 50.82 in both Tests and ODIs. In fact he is the only batsman to average 50+ in both Tests and ODIs," he writes.

WICKET!!! Aus 37-3 (11.3 ovs)

Wade run out (Perera) 15 (37b, 1x4)

Things are going from bad to worse for Australia. Wade's misery finally ends as he is run out after a misunderstanding with Peter Forrest. Wade, who struggled for 15 from 36 balls, hit one in the covers where Thisara Perera came up with a brilliant diving save and then threw at the bowler's end to have Wade run out. Both batsmen were stranded in the middle of the pitch then.

WICKET!!! Aus 37-2 (10.4 ovs)

Ponting c and b Maharoof 2 (10b)

Sri Lanka's hardwork pays off finally. Comeback man Maharoof claims the big wicket of Ponting, who is also beaten by a slower delivery and ends up spooning a simple return catch back to the bowler for two.

A perfect start for Sri Lanka as Australia are struggling at 37 for two in the 11th over.

The pressure will be on new batsman Forrest, who hit a half-century on his debut, in the last match against India. He will need to produce another big knock here.
09:34
- Live scorecard

Aus 36-1 (10 ovs)

Australia looking to play out the new ball it seems. They are not looking for any big shots and it is all singles for now. Maharoof concedes another three singles in his third over.

Kulasekara also looking to keep it simple. Another three runs from his fifth over as Australia reach 36 for one after ten overs with Wade on 14 (31 balls) and Ponting on two (eight balls).
09:26
- Live scorecard

Aus 30-1 (8 ovs)

There is a forecast for rain later in the day and already grey clouds have started gathering above the SCG. It is getting dark and the floodlights have been switched on.

After that wicket, Malinga is immediately taken off the attack and Farvez Maharoof is introduced. Maharoof is playing ODIs after nearly 20 months, his ODI appearance was against India in Dambulla, in June 2010.

Wade is struggling too as his chip just goes over the mid-off fielder to get him two runs. He takes a single off the final ball of that over as Maharoof makes a tidy start on his comeback.

He makes it up off the next ball though. A slow bouncer catches Warner off guard but he somehow manages to fend it away, which falls well short of the fine leg fielder.
