Kohli's ton helps India beat SL by 7 wkts

India did the unthinkable. They chased down Sri Lanka's mammoth 320 in 36.4 overs to keep themselves in the running for a place in the finals of the CB series.

 

Virat Kohli was unbeaten on 133 off 86 balls, Suresh Raina 40 off 24.

 

Kohli finished the things off with a straight drive off Lasith Malinga.

A vital contribution from Gautam Gambhir, who scored 63 from 64 balls, ensured India were never in a spot of bother.

Malinga was the most expensive Sri Lankan bowler giving away 96 runs from his 7.4 overs for one wicket.

Now all India have to do is hope that Australia beat Sri Lanka in the final round-robin match on Friday.

A wonderful 76-ball hundred from Virat Kohli have given India an outside chance to make it to the finals.

This has been the best batting display by India in the series. Teh bowling powerplay has been fruitful for India and the batting Poweplay so far has yeilded the desired results.

 

Suresh Raina at the other end teamed up with Kohli playing some exclusive shots -- strong off his pads and some nice drives.

 

India were 303-3. India still need 18 runs from five overs to make it to finals -- which seems to be a walk in the park now.

Sri Lanka have taken the bowling powerplay and it seems to have backfired on Sri Lankans by delaying it.

 

Lasith Malinga who was brought back for his thrid spell leaked 15 runs, while Nuwan Kulasekara was even more expensive giving away 18 runs.

 

Can India just pull it off. India need 73 runs from nine overs to qualify.

 

At the end of 31 overs India were 248-3. Kohli is on 87, while Raina is on 14.

The duo have put on 98 runs stand -- which happens to be the best in the series.

 

India still need 137 runs off 96 balls as India were 184-2 after 24 overs. Kohli is on 55, while Gambhir is on 52.

Gambhir is striking it crisply and Kohli too is managing to get one-boundary-an over to keep India in the hunt.

Earlier, brilliant tons from Tillkaratne Dilshan and Kumar Sangakkara have ensured that Sri Lanka to mammoth 320-4 at the end of 50 overs.

 

Dilshan carried his bat with a 160, while Sanga was out just after his century for 105.

Sri Lanka have sent in dandangerous Thisara Parrera to push on with the scoring as they were 253-2 after 44 overs.

After Dilshan, it was Kumar Sangakkara's turn to complete a well-deserved century as India look to contain the Lankan Lions.

 

The 84-ball included seven hits to the fence and two massive ones as the left-hander reached the landmark with a streaky double off Zaheer Khan.

 

Sri Lanka were 245-1. Dilshan is on 114, while Sanga is on 101.

A brilliant 131-ball hundred from Tillakaratne Dilshan have put Sri Lanka in a commanding position.

 

The attacking batsman reached the landmark as he flicked one on the on-side off Ravindra Jadeja with eight boundaries.

 

Kumar Sangakkara -- who himself is batting on 95 -- alongwith Dilshan have put on a 173-runs stand as they look to push the scoring from here on.

 

With still 9 overs to go looks like India will have another stiff challenge.

 

Sri Lanka were 226-1after 41 overs.

Sanga chips down the track and smashes Sehwag straight to bring up his half-century.

 

The 100-runs stand between Dilshan and Sanga is pushing India almost to the exit.

Virender Sehwag comes to bowl -- India clearly lacking bowlers to bowl wicket taking balls.

 

India need to strike quickly otherwise they can well pack their bags at the interval.

 

A flat deck isn't helping the bowlers either. At the current rate Sri Lankans should finish at 223, but surely they would be aiming a somewhere aroung the 25-0-270 mark.

 

At the end of 29 overs Sri Lanka were 124-1. Dilshan is on 64, while Sangakkara is on 35.

Tillakaratne Dilshan struck a wonderful 67-ball half-century to as Sri Lankans build on a strong start.

 

Dilshan reached the landmark with a superb late cut off Jadeja -- his second in the series, which also brought the 100-run mark for the Lankans.

 

At the other end, Kumar Sangakkara too is looking good as the duo have put on a crucial 51-runs stand for the second wicket.

 

Indian spinners have managed to keep things tight but haven't really managed to trouble the batsmen on a flat deck.

 

At the end of 22 overs Sri Lanka were 100-1. Dilshan is on 51, while Sangakkara is on 26.

And just was we speak, Jadeja strikes for the Men in Blue as he had Jayawardene caught in the slips by Virender Sehwag.

 

Jayawardene tried to play a late cut -- didn't realise there was a fielder there. Shewag puts his hand up and holds onto a good catch.

 

Jayawardene was back in the hut for 22.

 

Sri Lanka were 51-1 after 13 overs. Dilshan is on 26, alongwith Kumar Sangakkara who is yet to open his account.

Sri Lankan openers are off to a steady start at Hobart in a must-win game for India.

 

Mahela Jayawardene and Tillakaratne Dilshan have negotiated the early swing. Jayawardene is looking the aggressor of the two as he had tonked a huge six off Zaheer Khan over midwicket.

 

At the end of six overs Sri Lanka were 24-0. Jayawardene is on 13, while Dilshan is on 10.
