Live updates: Gambhir, Raina script 5 wkt win for India

A brilliant century from Gautam Gambhir and a counter-attacking cricket from Suresh Raina meant that India beat Sri Lanka by 5 wkts.

 

Chasing a competitive 287 for victory, Irfan Pathan smoked a boundary though the leg side as India go 2-1 in the five match series.

 

Gambhir made a 102, while Raina smoked 45-ball 65 to hand India the win. Lasith Malinga was the pick of the bowlers for Sri Lanka with figures of 2-60.

India were in deep trouble as well-set Gautam Gambhir was on his way back after being run out for 102.

 

Gambhir pushed the ball towards mid-on and set off for a quick single. But Udana was quick enough and manages a direct it catching Gambhir short. 

 

India need 75 runs from 54 balls, with half the side back in the hut.

Gautam Gambhir struck a brilliant 96-ball 100 to keep India in the hunt. India were reeling at one point after Malinga's twin strike reduced India to 180-4, but then he is keeping his head high for now.

 

Earlier, Lasith Malinga strikes in his second spell as he castled MS Dhoni for 31. Dhoni struggled in the middle as he failed to dig out the yorker from the Sri Lankan pacer.

 

Next up Rohit Sharma's misery with the bat continued as he was back in the hut off the first ball he faced.

 

Suresh Raina facing the hat-trick ball clipped one through the leg side for a single.

 

India need 92 runs off 72 balls. Gambhir is still there on 102 along with Suresh Raina who is on 6.

Lasith Malinga strikes in his second spell as he castled MS Dhoni for 31. Dhoni struggled in the middle as he failed to dig out the yorker from the Sri Lankan pacer.

 

Next up Rohit Sharma's misery with the bat continued as he was back in the hut off the first ball he faced.

India need 104 runs off 84 balls. Gambhir is still there on 94.

Gautam Gambhir is keeping India in the hunt, despite the fact that run-rate is moving up with each ball.

 

With him is Mr. Cool MS Dhoni, who is taking his time in the middle to settle in. With another 96 balls to go, India need 113 runs to win.

 

Gambhir is on 89, while MS Dhoni is on 29.

Rangana Herath provides the much-needed breakthrough for Sri Lanka as he had Virat Kohli walking abck to the pavillion for 38.

 

Kohli looking to punch the delivery hit is straight to the bowler, who dived to his left to take the catch. 

 

India were 114-2 after 21 overs. MS Dhoni has walked out to the middle, along with Gambhir who is on 60.

Gautam Gambhir stroked a 43-ball 50 to put India on the front foot chasing 287 for victory.

 

VIrat Kohli is giving him good company with 32. India had lost Virender Sehwag early and since then the duo have put on a 89-run stand for the second wicket to keep India's hopes alive.

 

Gambhir brought up India's 100 with a single through the covers in the 18th over.

At the end of 18 overs India were 101-1. Gambhir is on 52, while Kohli is on 34.

Gautam Gambhir and Virat Kohli have steadied the ship somewhat after the early loss.

 

Gambhir has been the aggressor of the two, striking Lasith Malinga for consecutive boundaries and Kohli at the other end creamed couple off Isru Udana.

 

The duo have added 50 runs for the second wicket as India were 58-1. Gambhir is on 34, while Kohli is on 15.

Thissara Perera strikes the early blow as he removes Virender Sehwag for three.

 

Sehwag's woeful form continues as he tries to drive the ball uppishly, only to hit ti straight to Senanayeke. India were 8-1 after two overs.

Sri Lanka made solid recovery after a poor start as the hosts finished with 286-5. 

 

The Lankans were reeling at 20-3 at one point, before a 121-runs stand between Kumar Sangakkara and skipper Mahela Jayawardene revived the innings.

 

Later on, Angelo Mathews used the long handle to good effect to ensure that Sri Lanka post more than a competitive score.

 

Indian bowlers too were disappointing to say the least, bowling on both sides. Zaheer Khan was the pick of the bowlers for India with 2-39 off his 10 overs.

Kumar Sangakkara's brilliant innings comes to an end after he was caught at point by Virat Kohli for 73.

 

The Sri Lankan looking to get the most in the Powerplays, gave himself a bit of room, but ended up slicing the Dinda devilvery.

 

At the end of 38 overs Sri Lanka were 182-5. Mathews is at the crease on 18 along with Jeevan Mendis, who is yet to open his account.

Rahul Sharma provides the much-needed breakthrough for India as he removes Mahela Jayawardene for 65.

 

Looks like a flipper from Rahul as Jayawardene was caught on the backfoot. A bit of spin on the ball as replays showed the ball would have hit middle and leg stump.

 

Kumar Sangakkara now holds the fort for the hosts with yet another half-century against the Indians.

 

At the end of 30 overs Sri Lanka were 145-4. Snagakkara is on 52, while Angelo Mathews is on two.

A skippers knock from Mahela Jayawardene have revived Sri Lankan innings, which at one point was struggling at 20-3.

 

Jayawardene along with Kumar Sangakkara have put on an unbeaten 100-runs stand for the fourth wicket to put the hosts on the front foot. At the end of 26 overs Sri Lanka were 120-3.

 

Jayawardene is on 55, while Sangakkara is on 42.

Spin introduced into for the first time as Rahul Sharma comes in. Apart from the initial burst, seamers have failed to keep the pressure on the Lankan batsmen. 

 

Jayawardene goes back and cuts Sharma for a boundary behind point for another boundary. At the end of 14 overs, Sri Lanka were 63-3. Jayawardene is on 19, while Sangakkara is on 23.

 

The duo have added 43 runs for the fourth wicket.

Ashok Dinda comes into the attack after Zaheer Khan and Irfan Pathan struck the opening blows.

 

Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara have steadied the ship somewhat, but they still have a long way to go.

Sri Lanka skipper Kumar Sangakkara has won the toss and elected to bat against India in the third ODI in Colombo on Saturday.

India have made two changes, bringing in leg-spinner Rahul Sharma, who had recently tested positive for recreational drugs, and Ashok Dinda in place of Pragyan Ojhaand Umesh Yadav. For Sri Lanka, Jeevan Mendis comes in place of Lahiru Thirimanne.

The five-match ODI series is currently locked at 1-1.
