IPL: Punjab edge past Bangalore by 4 wickets

In the end, Punjab nearly threw it away before recovering in the end to win the match by four wickets with just one ball to spare.

Punjab were in control with 13 needed from four over before Saini's wicket messed up things for the visitors.

Two run outs in the penultimate over gave Bangalore hope but Chawla finished off the match with the huge six.

The first ball is a dot ball and Dogra hits the second ball straight back to Vinay, who drops the tough chance.

Dogra drives the third ball through the covers for two runs and he pulls the next ball on the leg side for a single.

Piyush Chawla ends the match in some style as he heaves Vinay for a SIX over midwicket to win the match for Punjab.

Punjab are headed for a big upset win as they need just seven runs from two overs.

Zaheer to bowl his final over now. Abhishek Nayar takes a single from the second ball and Hussey is run out two balls later as he attempts to take the second run but quick work from Vinay on the fine leg boundary catches him short.

Hussey is run out for 45 from 29 balls and his dismissal has suddenly given Bangalore some hope.

And the very next ball, Nayar is run out as Paras Dogra hits it to the cover region and Kohli's direct hit catches Nayar short.

Just one run from Zaheer's last over and suddenly it is anyone's game as five runs are needed from six balls.

Appanna send a flat quick throw from deep point and Azhar is inches short of his crease to be run out for two.

McDonald to bowl his final over and he gets the wicket of Saini. The youngster tries to heave it on the leg side but holes it to Vettori at mid-on after a good knock of 50 from 36 balls.

A good over from McDonald to end his spell as he gives just one run and gets the wicket of Saini.

But it has come too late in the day for Bangalore as Punjab are cruising towards a big win.

Punjab seem headed for a comfortable victory here courtesy of some sensible batting from their top order.

Saini has raced to 49 from 32 balls by playing correct cricketing shots and not resorting to wild swipes across the line. Hussey has also paced his innings well so far, hitting 28 from 18 balls.

Off-spinner Asad Pathan into the attack now. David Hussey welcomes him by lofting the first ball over long-off for a huge SIX!!!

Saini takes a single to complete his maiden half-century in the IPL, from 34 balls.

Hussey ends the over with another SIX as he pulls a short ball from Pathan over the midwicket fence.

14 runs came from that over as Punjab now need 13 from four overs for victory.

Punjab are in control at this stage with 37 runs needed from the last six overs for victory.

Zaheer is back into the attack after a disappointing first spell. Saini takes a single from the first ball to bring up the 50-run stand for the third wicket with his captain Hussey from just 32 balls.

Zaheer's struggles continue as Saini shows scant respect to the veteran, easily pulling a short ball through midwicket for a four.

Punjab are cruising towards victory as they now need 27 from five overs for victory.

Saini has been one of the most impressive young Indian players in the tournament. Not only has he been good with the gloves but has also played a few good knocks with the bat.

Saini cuts a short ball from McDonald over the point fielder for a boundary to race to 41 from 25 balls. Three more singles in that over as Punjab get seven runs from McDonald's third over.

Hussey decides to target Appanna. He slams the second ball back past the bowler for a boundary and follows it up with back to back sixes.

Hussey lifts the next ball over long-off for a six and then repeats the shot off the next ball to clear Kohli on the ropes.

Appanna is hit for 17 runs in that over and Punjab now need 44 from 42 balls for victory.

David Hussey lifts Vettori to the midwicket region for a boundary and two balls later takes a single to long-on.

Saini then gives himself room and chips it over the off-side field and scampers across for two quick runs. Eight runs from Vettori's over as Punjab continue to build their total without taking much risks.

It's left arm spinners from both ends as KP Appanna comes into the attack now. And Appanna strikes in his very first over with the wicket of Mandeep who is leg before wicket after a quick knock of 43 from 30 balls, with the help of six fours and a six.

That was an unnecessary risky shot from Mandeep considering the circumstances as he looked to play the paddle sweep.

A good start from Appanna as he gives away three runs and takes the wicket of Mandeep.

Spin is introduced as Bangalore captain Vettori comes into the attack now. And Punjab keep the scoreboard moving at a good rate as they score nine runs from Vettori's first over.

Saina cuts Vettori behind point for two runs and then slaps it to the covers where a misfielding from KP Appanna gifts him a boundary.

Mandeep has provided Punjab with a flying start as he has raced to 42 from 27 balls, while Nitin Saini is on eight.

Mandeep then looks to slash a ball that was too close to him and Gayle near pulls off a good catch at first slip but it hits his finger tips before going over him.

Punjab continue making good progress as they reach 53 for one in six overs.

Bangalore need a wicket or two in the next couple of overs to stop Punjab's progress.

Medium pacer Andrew McDonald introduced into the attack now. And gets the first breakthrough for Bangalore as Marsh is bowled through the gate by McDonald for eight.

Nitin Saini is the new batsman for Punjab and he ends the over in some style as he drives a full ball from McDonald back past him for a boundary.

Mandeep is getting the boundaries for Punjab while Marsh takes his time to setttle down. The right-hander gives himself room and cuts Vinay past the point fielder for a boundary and then backs away again but this time the bowler follows him and he can get just a single on the leg side.

Two more single as Punjab progress to 35 for no loss after four overs.

Ten runs for Punjab from that Zaheer over, who seems to be struggling at the moment.

Zaheer Khan with the new ball and up against him are the two Punjab openers in Mandeep Singh and Shaun Marsh.

Khan starts with a wide down the leg side and a fumble from keeper AB de Villiers gives Punjab the extra run.

Mandeep pulls the fourth ball behind square on the leg for the first boundary of the innings. Two balls later he charges down the wicket to Zaheer but is beaten and the veteran pacer gives him a piece of his mind.

Mandeep ends the over with a streaky boundary as he looks to play it on the leg side but the leading edge carries over the point fielder for a four.

A good start from Punjab as they score 11 runs from the first over.

Bangalore lost their way after the dismissal of Gayle. Punjab's bowlers made a good comeback in the final few overs, as they took four for 36 in the final five overs.

Praveen Kumar bowled an exceptional spell, conceding just eight runs from his four overs at the start of the innings. Mahmood was also superb with the ball, taking three for 20 in four overs.

Gayle lifted Bangalore after a slow start with his blazing innings of 71 from 42 balls, while Kohli made a sedate 45 from 42 balls. But the rest of the Bangalore batsmen failed to adjust to the wicket, which helped the fast bowlers all through.

The experienced Mahmood to bowl the final over. He makes a good start to the over as he gets the wicket of McDonald with the first ball, caught behind by wicketkeeper Saini for nine.

Two balls later, Mahmood gets his second wicket of the over. De Villiers hits a full toss straight to mid-on to be dismissed for 17 from 13 balls.

Daniel Vettori takes a single from the first ball he faces, to long-on.

Mahmood bowls a wide and follows it up with a good slower delivery that foxes Pathan who misses the big hit. Just a single to end the final over.

Superb stuff from Mahmood as he takes two wickets in the final over, while giving away just four runs.

He finishes with three for 20 in four overs.

Pacer Awana is back now after that hammering from Gayle in his previous over. McDonald gets a thick outside edge as he looks to cut the second ball and it flies past the keeper for a four.

It's a decent over for Punjab till de Villiers cuts a short over the thirdman region for a SIX!!!

Hussey comes on to bowl his second over. He starts with a quick yorker which goes very close to the stumps as Andrew McDonald fails to dig it out. De Villiers reverse sweeps the next ball but he hits it towards the covers for another single.

Just five runs from that over as Punjab bowlers have made a good comeback in the last couple of overs. Just 23 runs in the last four overs.

Leg-spinner Chawla comes on to bowl the third over. AB de Villiers charges down the wicket but fails to get to the pitch and is forced to defend. The South African then reverse sweeps the next ball for a boundary and takes a single from the next ball.

Chawla then strikes with the wicket of Kohli, who is bowled after a subdued innings of 45 from 42 balls. That was the wrong one from Chawla which Kohli looks to pull but missses and it hits his pads before going on to the stumps.

A good comeback from Chawla as he concedes just six runs and takes a wicket too.

Gayle then slams the first ball of Mahmood's new over down the ground for a boundary through long-on.

But Mahmood gets revenge with the big wicket of Gayle. The short ball tactics finally works for Punjab as Gayle pulls a short ball straight into the hands of Miller at midwicket, who holds on this time.

Gayle is dismissed after a blazing innings of 71 from 42 balls, laced with six fours and four sixes. He put on 119 runs in 83 balls for the second wicket with Kohli to bring Bangalore back into the contest after a slow start.

Interestingly, Miller had dropped Gayle on 39 (28 balls) and since that miss he smashed 32 from 14 balls.

AB de Villiers starts with two dot balls before pulling the next ball to deep square leg for a couple and ends the over with a single.

Captain David Hussey brings himself into the attack now. He restores parity, giving away just five singles bowling flat quick off-spinners.

Bangalore are comfortably placed on 122 for one in 15 overs with Gayle and Kohli attacking on all cylinders.

Bangalore have lifted the tempo out in the middle as 37 runs have come from the last two overs.

And now it is attack from both ends as Kohli jumps down the track and lofts Abhishek Nayar back over his head for a SIX!!!

The Gayle storm continues in Bangalore. This time he lofts a full delivery from Nayar high over the sightscreen for another massive SIX!!!

54 runs from the last three overs as Punjab lose the initiative after a good start with the ball.

Gayle has raced to 63 from 35 balls, while Kohli seems to have come back to form with 43 from 39 balls. They have put on 110 runs in 75 balls so far for the second wicket.

Gayle then gets a lifeline as substitute fielder David Miller drops an easy catch running to his right at long-off. Gayle looks to slap a short ball from Awana down the ground but does not get enough distance and is lucky to get a lifeline.

Awana follows up with another quick bouncer which Gayle ducks under and is rightly called a wide. Gayle then pulls another short ball to midwicket for a single and Kohli gets one down the ground.

Gayle then nudges it fine on the leg side for a boundary as he beats the short fine leg fielder. He then cuts the next ball past the point fielder and it races across the turf in no time for another four.

That boundary brings up Gayle's half-century from just 32 balls, with the help of five fours and two sixes.

Gayle is on a mission out there. He takes a few steps down the track and lofts Awana high into the stands over long-on for another SIX!!! That also takes Bangalore past the 100-run mark in the 13th over.

Gayle is turning it on now as 19 runs come from Awana's third over.

Chawla starts his second over with another poor delivery. It is short and Gayle has enough time to rock on the backfoot and slap it over long-on for a SIX!!!

Gayle then chips down the track and Chawla bowls a quicker down the leg side which beats both the batsman and the keeper.

Chawla then beats Gayle with the wrong one which takes the leading edge for a single on the off-side.

And Kohli joins the party now as he jumps down the track and lofts Chawla back over his head for another SIX!!!

Kohli then cuts it past the point fielder for two runs but hits the next ball straight to the point fielder.

Chawla has given 18 runs in his second over for a total of 29 runs in two overs.

Gayle takes two runs from the second ball of Mahmood's second over and is beaten off the next ball as he is foxed by the slower ball.

Two more singles before Gayle drives a full toss to midwicket where he gets only one.

Leg-spinner Piyush Chawla is welcomed to the crease with a huge SIX by Gayle as he pulls a short ball over midwicket. That is also the 400th six of the tournament.

Chawla then bowls another long hop and Kohli is quick to despatch it through midwicket for a four.

The last ball of that over is short and wide but Kohli hits it straight to the point fielder, an opportunity missed then!

Something's got to give away in the next couple of overs. You can expect Gayle to cut loose and take the attack to a bowler or two.

Awana gets the third ball to move away sharply as Gayle lets it go to the keeper. He pulls the next ball straight to the fine leg fielder and is hit on the shoulders as the fielder throws it to the non-striker's end.

Praveen to bowl his third over as Punjab look to make most of the conditions and strike a few early wickets.

Chris Gayle takes a single from the second ball of the fourth over and Kohli does the same from the next ball.

Gayle then breaks the shackles with a hat-trick of boundaries. The left-hander looks to clip it on the leg side but despite getting an inside edge it carries for a boundary. The next ball he gets an outside edge but yet again it carries over the off-side field for another boundary.

Gayle then gets it off the middle as he pulls a short ball over midwicket for another four.

Harris is hit for 14 runs in that over as Bangalore recover after a slow start.

Kohli takes a single from the first ball of Praveen's second over. Gayle is then beaten all ends up by an outgoing delivery from the Indian pacer and he gets a single from the first ball.

Kohli is lucky not to have edged the next ball as he tries to flirt with the outswinger and he ends the over by hitting the last ball straight to the cover fielder.

Praveen concedes just two runs in his second over to give away three runs in two overs.

Ryan Harris to bowl the second over. Agarwal, 21, gives himself room and chips the first ball over the point region for a SIX!!!

Ryan gets revenge soon after as he bowls Agarwal a couple of balls later for seven. The right-hander looks to play across the line on the leg side but was nowhere close to the outswinger and lost his off-stump.

The struggling Virat Kohli walks out to the middle and he has had a poor tournament so far. He is also someone who struggles when the conditions are in favour of the bowlers. He gets off the mark with a single to mid-off.

The dangerous Chris Gayle walks out to open the batting with Mayank Agarwal to a huge roar from the Bangalore crowd.

The experienced Praveen Kumar will take the new ball for Punjab and he should enjoy the conditions on offer.

Praveen makes a good start as he gets the first ball to come in sharply as Agarwal defends it on the off-side. The second ball is driven to the cover fielder as Praveen follows up with an outswinger.

Praveen gets the next ball to bounce a bit extra as Mayank plays and misses outside the off-stump. The right-hander is comprehensively beaten yet again as Praveen gets the next one to move sharply, leaving the right-hander and going very close to the stumps.

Agarwal drives the fifth ball straight to mid-off and drops the last ball on the off-side for a single.

A good first over from Praveen as he kept Agarwal guessing.

Kings XI Punjab captain David Hussey wins the toss and elects to bowl against Royal Challengers Bangalore in the 44th match of the Indian Premier League, in Bangalore, on Wednesday.

Adam Gilchrist has still not recovered from his injury, but he is not far from a comeback, says Hussey.

The visitors make three changes to their team. Australian pacer Ryan Harris comes in to the team in place of South African David Miller, while Paras Dogra and Abhishek Nayar replace Bipul Sharma and Bhargav Bhatt respectively.

Hosts Bangalore also make a couple of changes. All-rounder Andrew McDonald replaces Tillakaratne Dilshan at the top of the order, while Asad Pathan comes in for Harshal Patel.
