IPL: Rajasthan cruise past Kings XI by 43 runs

IT's been a clinical performance from Rajasthan Royals as they beat Kings XI by 43 runs.

 

Chasing a competitive 178 for victory, wickets at regular intervals meant that hosts could only muster 134-8.

 

Shaun Marsh looked good in his brief innings but couldn't carry on from there.

 

Shane Watson, Shaun Tait and Johan Botha were the successful bowlers picking up two wickets apiece.

With the run rate getting tougher to achieve Azhar Mahmood was the latest victim as he was castled by Stuart Binny for 24.

 

Mahmood did strike couple of good shots was foxed by the slower one. Its been two different pitches and batsmen have struggled to come to terms with the pace and bounce of the pitch.

 

At the end of 16 overs Kings XI were 104-5.

Kings XI Punjab batsmen are struggling in the chase as Nitin Saini departs for two.

 

Saini tried to flick a fast Shaun Tait delivery -- gets a leading edge -- then giving a simple catch to the bowler.

 

Couple of overs later it's time for David Hussey's turn to make the long walk back to the pavillion after giving a simple catch to Brad Hodge for 8.

 

A short delivery from Siddharth Trivedi as Hussey fails to control the pull and gave a simple catch to the Australian.

 

Johan Botha catches the big fish as he castles in-form Shaun Marsh for 34. Marsh charges down, but yorks himself in the process as the ball hits the middle stump.

 

At the end of 9 overs Kings XI were 60-4. Azar Mahmood is on 1 along with Gurkeerat Singh, who is on 1.

Shane Watson strikes the first blow for Rajasthan Royals as he removes Mandeep Singh for seven.

 

A short delviery from Watson as Mandy looks to pull it from outside offstump but doesn't get the timing on the shot and hit it straight to Trivedi at mid-on.

 

Punjab were 8-1 after 2 overs.

Brad Hodge's late blitz powered Rajasthan Royals to 177-6.

 

Rajasthan who had slowed down in the middle after a superb start, got the much-needed momentum from Hodge.

 

Shane Watson and Rahul Dravid gave the perfect platform but Kings XI fought back with wickets at regular wickets.

 

Dravid cracked up 46, while vital contributions Watson and Ashok Menaria ensured that the visitors put up a competitve total.

Ryan Harris was the most successful bowler for Kings XI Punjab for 4-34.

Kings XI Punjab bowlers have kept things tight as they have stifled Rajasthan as they were 150-4 after 18 overs.

 

Rajasthan failed to keep the momentum, which they maintained early in the innings and then Punjab bolwers too put pressure on the visitors.

Ryan Harris comes back for his second spell and strikes in his first over itself as he had Rahul Dravid walking back to the pavillion for 46.

 

Dravid went for a drive got an outside egde as the ball flew to third man and was caught neatly by Awana.

Rahul Dravid and Shok Menaria have continued from where Shane Watson left off and have maintained a healthy run rate.

 

Menaria has been the aggressor of the two as he smashed Piyush Chawla for two consecutive sixes.

 

Parwinder Awana has been the impressive bowler so far as Rajasthan were 116-2 after 13 overs.

 

Dravid is on 46, while Menaria is on 25.

So spin comes into the picture immediatly after the Strategic Time-out.

 

Watson reached out for one for a single. Dravid returns the favour with another single.

 

Watson then smokes one over long on for a maximum. Things looking ominious here for Chawla.

 

But just as we speak, Watson top edges one over long-off, but Ryan Harris dives full length to take a stunner.

 

At the end of 8 overs Rajasthan were 78-2. Dravid is on 34, while Menaria is on 0.

After losing Ajinkya Rahane early in the innings, Rahul Dravid and Shane Watson counterpunch Kings XI bowlers with a flurry of boundaries.

 

Dravid smashed three consecutive boundaries off Ryan Harris, and creamed couple of boundaries off Praveen Kumar through the covers. 

 

Shane Watson at the other end clipped Praveen Kumar for a thumping boundary.

 

At the end of five overs, Rajasthan were 45-1. Dravid is on 24, while Watson is on 14.

Ryan Harris strikes the first blow for Kings XI Punjab as he removes prolific run scorer Ajinkya Rahane for 5.

 

Seam moment at the Mohali pitch as Harris gets one to bounce a bit more than usual, Rahane reaches for it, only to edge it to Nitin Saini behind the stumps.

 

Rajasthan were 8-1 after 2 overs.

Meanwhile the news coming in from Mohali is Rajasthan Royals have won the toss and have elected to bat first against Kings XI Punjab. 

 

The team news is Shaun Tait makes his appearance in IPL 5 as the South Australian replaces Owais Shah.

 

Johan Botha too makes a comeback in place Brad Hodge.

What a fantastic spell from Narine as he takes one for 13 in four overs, including a maiden.

Marchant de Lange to bowl the final over. Mathews nudges it on the leg side for a single and Bhuvaneshwar Kumar chips it over the cover region for a four.

Kumar then hits it to the covers for a single.

Mathews then slaps a full toss down the ground and Laxmi Ratan Shukla holds on to a good catch running in from the long-on boundary.

Mathews is dismissed for 35 from 27 balls but his dismissal ends Pune's hopes as they now need 12 runs from the last two balls for victory.

De Langa bowls a quick bouncer to Kumar and he top edges it over the keeper for a one-bounce boundary. 8 needed from the final ball for victory.

De Langa bowls a full toss as Kumar hits it straight to the cover fielder as Pune lose yet another close match.

Pune finish on 143 for eight in their 20 overs to lose the match by seven runs.

Pune 133-7 (19 ovs) vs Kolkata 150-5

Narine to bowl his final over. Mathews takes a single from the first ball and Wayne Parnell is beaten off the next ball as Narine gets it turn to sharply.

He sweeps the next ball to deep square leg but is run out as he falls short while going for quick two runs.

Pune suffer further as they lost their seventh wicket and they now need 20 runs from nine balls for victory.

Bhuvaneshwar Kumar gets a leading edge from the first ball and then hits it down the ground to get two runs.

Four runs from that over as Pune now need 18 runs from the final over for victory.

Its anyone's game as Pune need 31 runs from three overs for victory. Ganguly starts the 18th over with a bang as he lofts Bhatia for a six down the ground but fails to make most of a full toss as he hits it straight to mid-off for one.

But Pune are dealt a big blow in the form of Ganguly's wicket, who holes out to deep midwicket after scoring 36 from 35 balls.

Nine runs from that over as Pune now need 22 runs from two overs for victory.

Pune now need 35 runs from four overs for victory. Narine, who bowled a brilliant first spell of one for five in two overs, comes on to bowl his second over.

Mathews takes a single from the first ball and Ganguly is beaten off the next ball. The left-hander then hits it to deep midwicket for one and Mathews takes one from the next ball too.

Ganguly plays out another dot ball and takes a single from the final ball to end the over.

Pune scored 19 runs from the previous over and now need 42 runs from five overs for victory.

Mathews takes a single from the first ball despite some hesitation between the two batsmen. Ganguly then gets an inside edge as he looks to play an inside out shot and it goes past the wicketkeeper for a boundary.

Ganguly then drives to the covers for one and Mathews tries to heave the next ball to midwicket but fails to get it off the middle for just one.

Ganguly continues to struggle as he hits the final ball straight to the fielder.

The match is slowly slipping away from Pune's grasp as they now need 61 runs from six overs for victory.

But Mathews has other ideas as he turns the match on its head with three consecutive sixes off Pathan.

He slog sweeps Pathan over midwicket for a six and chips down the track off the next ball for the second six. Mathews once again uses the slog sweep to good effect as he slams a fast six to bring his team back into the contest.

He takes a single from the fourth ball and Ganguly fails to get singles from the next two balls.

Bhatia starts his second over. It is only singles at the moment as Bhatia is doing a good job by varying the pace of his deliveries.

Three singles from the first four balls before Ganguly chips it down the ground but can only get one. Mathews also tries to heave it on the leg side but it is only a single on the leg side.

Pune now need 71 runs from eight overs for victory.

Part-time off-spinner Yusuf Pathan into the attack now. He gets the first ball to turn a lot as Ganguly is beaten. The Pune captain then gives himself but can only hit it down the ground for one and Mathews plays it covers for one.

Ganguly takes another single from the next ball before Pathan bowls a wide down the leg side to Mathews.

Mathews looks for quick singles from the last two balls but it sent back by Ganguly on both occasions. In T20 cricket, you need to sprint across for such quick singles.

Just four runs from Pathan's first over as Pune continue to struggle.

Medium pacer Rajat Bhatia into the attack now. Three singles from the first three balls before Mathews defends a slower ball to the off-side.

The two batsmen pick a single each as just five runs come from Bhatia's first over.

At the halfway stage, Pune are 66 for five, needing 85 runs in ten overs for victory.

Narine gets another one to turn sharply beating Ganguly yet again. He bowls another beauty to Ganguly, turning it miles as it hits the thigh pads and run away past the slip fielder for a boundary.

The next boundary Ganguly opens the face of the bat and steers it past the first slip fielder for another boundary. Two slips in place now for Ganguly as Kolkata look to attack and claim another wicket.

Ganguly hits to midwicket to get a single from the last ball of that over.

Kallis to bowl his second over. Mathews takes a single from the second ball to the fine leg region. Kallis then foxes Ganguly with the slow bouncer who plays and misses outside the off-stump.

Ganguly brings the crowd alive as he gives himself room and chips it past the cover fielder for a boundary to get off the mark in style.

Kallis follows that up with a quick bouncer at 140kmph but Ganguly scoops it over the wicketkeeper for a boundary. He has a go with another bouncer but Ganguly offers no shot and the umpires call it a wide.

Ganguly then whips it to the leg side to make it 11 runs from the over.

Off-spinner Sunil Narine into the attack and he also takes a wicket in his first over. Smith is trapped leg before wicket as he is beaten by the off-spinning delivery from Narine to walk back after scoring just 14.

Narine is getting it to turn miles as he beats Sourav Ganguly all ends up. The Pune captain tries to sweep the final delivery but misses.

Narine starts with a wicket maiden as Pune continue to slip.

Pune 55-4 (8 ovs) vs Kolkata 150-5

Jacques Kallis does the trick in his very first over. Mithun Manhas tries to pull a short ball but top edges a simple catch to midwicket to walk back after scoring one.

The Pune batsmen are going down in a heap here.

Sourav Ganguly has still not walked out to bat as Angelo Mathews comes to bat at No. 6.

The Pune innings is in complete shambles at the moment as the pitch gets more difficult for batting now.

Kolkata to bowl out Abdulla as the left-arm spinner comes on to bowl his fourth and final over.

Pandey takes a single from the first ball and Smith flicks it to the leg side for a couple. The Australian then chips it over the off-side fielders for just one.

Pandey then gives his wicket away as he lofts a simple catch to Das at long-off. That was an unnecessary shot in the circumstances as the youngster falls for 17.

And Mithun Manhas also walks in ahead of Ganguly.

Pune 45-2 (6 ovs) vs Kolkata 150-5

Pandey slashes a wide ball from de Lange through the point region where Manoj Tiwary dives full length to stop a certain boundary. Two balls later Tiwary is in the action yet again as he makes another brilliant diving stop at point but de Lange over steps the crease to gift Pune a free hit.

Smith makes most of the free hit as he smashes it past point for a four and then takes a single from the next ball.

Abdulla to bowl his third over on the trot, he has given just 13 runs from two overs. The left-arm spinner starts with two dot balls to Steven Smith, who flicks the third ball to midwicket for a single.

Pandey then pulls a short ball past the midwicket fielder for a boundary. He ends the over with another single as Pune reach 35 for two after five overs.


18:18   IPL: Uthappa out for 16, Pune lose 2nd wicket

Pune 28-2 (4 ovs) vs Kolkata 150-5

Uthappa flicks the first ball of de Lange's new over over midwicket for a boundary. Kolkata on the defensive after that shot as they take out the slip and place a fielder at midwicket.

Pandey then gets an inside edge which goes close to the stumps and Uthappa scampers across for a quick single.

Uthappa then smashes a short ball straight to the cover fielder to be dismissed for 16. The umpires check for the no-ball as de Lange's front foot lands very close to the bowling crease but it is not a no ball and Uthappa has to walk back.

De Lange has picked up two wickets and is bowling at a good pace.

Steven Smith is the new batsman and he walks out to ahead of Sourav Ganguly, who has decided to demote himself.

Uthappa charges down the wicket to Abdulla but defends it back to the bowler before taking a single from the next ball. Pandey then run across for a single and Abdulla bowls a wide down the leg side to Uthappa.

Pacer Marchant de Lange starts off with a victory. Clarke looks to defend a quick ball from the front foot as it brushes his bat and pad before it kisses the top of the bails to bowl the Australian captain for one.

He then bowls a wide down the leg side to new batsman Manish Pandey and repeats that a ball later against Uthappa.

Pandey then cuts a short wide ball past the point fielder for a boundary.

Australian captain Michael Clarke walks out to open the innings with Robin Uthappa. Left-arm spinner Iqbal Abdulla will open the bowling for Kolkata.

Uthappa gets his team off the mark as he chips the second ball just over the mid-on fielder for two runs. He gets another couple from the next ball as Rajat Bhatia fields at mid-on. The next ball Uthappa gets a boundary as he cuts Abdulla behind the point fielder on the off-side.

It's a good start for Pune as they get 10 runs from the first over.

Kolkata 150-5 (20 ovs) vs Pune

Kolkata messed up big time in the second half of their innings. The first 10 overs went their way as their openers Gambhir and McCullum went berserk, scoring 98 runs. But in the second half, in the last ten overs, they managed only 52 runs, while losing five wickets in the process.

Mathews was the best bowler for Pune with two for 17 in four overs, while Bhuvaneshwar Kumar took two for 26 and Kartik took one for 22.

However, it is important to note that the pitch is not good for batting and Pune will need to bat really well to get this score.

Manoj Tiwary takes two runs from the first ball of Parnell's final over and does the same from the next ball. He takes a single from the next ball and then Das gets another couple down the ground followed by a single.

Tiwary ends the innings with a single from the final ball of the innings.

Das finishes unbeaten on 15 from 18 balls, while Tiwary makes six from four balls.

Bhuvaneshwar Kumar starts with a wicket in his final over. Pathan tries to loft a full ball down the ground but holes out a simple catch to Smith at long-on to be dismissed after a sedate knock of 11 from 15 balls.

Das then plays the same shot but this time it carries over the boundary for a SIX as Smith makes a valiant effort on the ropes. He plays out two dot balls before a single from the fifth ball.

Laxmi Ratan Shukla falls from the first ball he faces, caught by crowd favourite Ganguly at mid-off as he looks to play another big shot.

Parnell comes on to bowl his third over. It has been 40 balls since Kolkata have got a boundary and the wait continues as Das and Pathan take singles from the first two balls.

Pathan then gets another single before Das misses the slower ball which goes through to the wicketkeeper.

Das gets a lifeline as he lifts it to the coves where Kumar spills a difficult catch as he comes in from the boundary.

Das gets a lifeline as Kumar puts down a tough return catch as the right-hander looks to pull a short ball. Two more dot balls before Das flicks it on the leg side for a single. Pathan also takes a single from the last ball as just two runs from Kumar's third over.

Kolkata 125-3 (16 ovs) vs Pune

Pune continue to prosper in the middle overs as they keep picking up wickets while drying up the boundaries. And now Mathews takes a wicket in his final over to peg back Kolkata further.

Kallis is completely foxed by the slower delivery from Mathews and he is bowled through the gate for one.

Mathews gets another slower ball on the target. New batsman Debabrata Das is hit on the pids and there is a huge appeal for LBW but umpire Shahvir Tarapore is not interested.

Pathan plays the next ball down to long-for for one and Das also drives it down the ground for one.

After 10 overs, Kolkata were cruising at 98 for no loss. But since the dismissal of Gambhir, they have lost their way with just 27 runs coming from the next six overs for the loss of three wickets.

Kolkata 121-2 (15 ovs) vs Pune

Kartik to bowl his final over. Pathan drives the first ball to long-on for a single and Kallis takes one off the next ball.

Pathan then lofts Kartik to the midwicket region where Steven Smith runs around from mid-on and almost pulls off an unbelievable catch. He takes the catch but the momentum carries him over the ropes and he shows great presence of mind to throw the ball inside the rope while in mid air.

Kolkata have manages just 10 runs from the last three overs while losing two wickets.
17:13   IPL: McCullum out for 42, KKR lose 2nd wicket

Kolkata 115-2 (14 ovs) vs Pune

Pathan defends the first ball from Mathews but McCullum calls him through for a quick single. Mathews then bowls a good yorker and McCullum can only dig it out. The Kiwi batsman then plays the reverse sweep but hits it straight to the short thirdman fielder.

McCullum looks to play the paddle sweep off the next ball but misses the ball and is trapped plumb in front of the wickets. McCullum falls after a good knock of 43 from 42 balls, with the help of five fours and a six.

Veteran Jacques Kallis is the new batsman and he defends the next two balls.

Pune continue to make a good comeback with the ball. Just one run from that over by Mathew and he takes a wicket.

Kolkata seem to have lost their way in the last five overs, scoring just 26 runs for the loss of two wickets.
17:07   IPL: Kartik strikes, Gambhir out for 56

Kolkata 114-1 (13 ovs) vs Pune

Kartik back into the attack to bowl his second spell. Gambhir takes a single from the first ball and McCullum cuts the next ball but they get just one courtesy of some quick fielding from Mathews on the cover boundary.

Kartik makes the first breakthrough for Kolkata. Gambhir fails to make most of a full toss and holes out to Mithun Manhas at long-off after a good innings of 56 from 36 balls, with the help of four fours and two sixes.

Yusuf Pathan gets a promotion in the batting order. He is beaten off the first ball as he looks to steer it fine but gets off the mark from the next ball with a single on the leg side.

A superb over from Kartik as he gives away just three runs while taking the first wicket for Pune.

Angelo Mathews to bowl the 12th over of the innings. Gambhir hits the first ball past point as the two batsmen scamper across for two runs and then get a single from the next ball.

Mathews bowls two dot balls to McCullum before the right-hander pulls a short ball to deep square leg for one.

A good over form Mathews as he gives away just five runs.
16:55   IPL: Gambhir races to 50, KKR in command

Kolkata 106-0 (11 ovs) vs Pune

Ganguly clips the first ball of Parnell's second over to the leg side for two runs to complete his half-century from 30 balls. Replays show that Gambhir didn't touch his bat at the non-striker's end and Kolkata get just one run then.

However, he takes a single from the next to bring up Kolkata's 100 in the 11th over.

McCullum dances down the wicket but gets an inside edge which goes past the wicketkeeper for a boundary through the fine leg region. He then tries to pull a short ball but fails to connect and it goes through to the wicketkeeper.

McCullum hits the final ball wide off the cover fielder to pick up a couple.

Angelo Mathews is introduced into the attack now. Gambhir steers the first ball to thirdman for a single and McCullum also picks a single from the next as Mathews fails to stop it on his follow through.

Gambhir then gives himself and smashes it to deep cover for just one.

McCullum then charges down the wicket and cracks the full toss past the cover fielder for a boundary. He looks to reverse sweep the next ball but misses it and the two batsmen run across for a single.

Gambhir ends the over with a single as Kolkata reach 98 after 10 overs.

Clarke to continue with his slow left-arm spinners. Gambhir walks down the wicket and takes a single on the leg side.

McCullum sweeps the next ball and misfielding from Kumar at deep square leg gifts Kolkata another boundary.

The Kolkata opener then gets a lifeline. McCullum (28) top edges a sweep and Dinda drops the easiest of catches at short fine leg. You cannot drop such an easy catch...that was just unbelievable!

Clarke bowls another decent over, conceding seven runs and was unlucky not to have picked up a wicket. Ganguly is livid at that drop.

Bhuvaneshwar Kumar to bowl his second over. He starts with a wide and McCullum defends the next ball back to the bowler. The right-hander then clips the next ball on the leg side for one. Gambhir hits the next ball in the same region to pick up two runs. Three more singles in that over as Kumar concedes seven runs in his second over.

Pune are desperate for a wicket and they bring in part-time spinner Michael Clarke into the attack.

McCullum defends the first ball and takes a single from the next. Two more singles before Gambhir steps down the wicket off the final ball and chips it over midwicket for a boundary.

Kolkata 68-0 (6 ovs) vs Pune

Ashok Dinda starts his second over with a wide as Kolkata bring up their 50. Gambhir lashes at a wide delivery and gets it past point for two more runs and then takes a single from the following delivery.

Dinda is unlucky as McCullum looks to defends but gets an outside edge which flies past the wicketkeeper into the boundary at thirdman.

Gambhir then takes a few steps down the wicket and lofts Dindia high into the stands at midwicket for a SIX. The next ball is again down the leg side and Gambhir helps it fine on the leg side for a four.

19 runs from that over as Kolkata race to 68 for no loss in six overs with Gambhir on 35 from 18 balls,  and McCullum on 20 from 18 balls.

Pune make another change as left-arm pacer Wayne Parnell replace Kartik. Gambhir on the attack straightaway as he lofts a wide delivery over the cover fielder for a boundary.

Gambhir looks to loft the next ball over midwicket but it hits too high on the bat for a single on the leg side.

Parnell then bowls it down the leg side as it hits McCullum's pads for a boundary fine on the leg side. He charges down the wicket and deposits a full delivery over the long-on fence for a SIX.

Pacer Bhuvaneshwar Kumar to bowl the third over. It is a poor start from the youngster as he bowls a wide delivery down the leg side which keeper Robin Uthappa also misses to give away five wides.

He follows up with another wide down the leg side and Gambhir defends the next ball, which is perfectly pitched, just around the off-stump.

Kumar then errs again as he bowls another wide delivery, way outside the off-stump. Gambhir then takes a single on the off-side and McCullum smashes a short ball straight to the cover fielder and gets a single because of a misfielding.

A huge appeal for LBW against McCullum and it is turned down by the umpire as it looks to heading down the leg side. McCullum charges down the wicket but hits it straight to midwicket and gets no run.

McCullum reverse sweeps the first ball of Kartik's second over for a boundary through the thirdman region. He is beaten off the next ball as Kartik gets it turn a bit and the Kolkata opener defends the next two balls back to the bowler.

He plays the fifth ball on the leg side for a single and Gambhir also takes on to end that over.

Pacer Ashok Dinda to bowl the second over. McCullum drives the first ball to the cover and then defends the second ball. The third ball is also defended while the Kiwi opener takes a single on the off-side off the fourth ball.

Gambhir then pulls a short ball from Dinda into the stands at square leg for the first six of the match. Gambhir was not in complete control of that shot and it looked to have hit the top edge but it carried all the way.

The left-hander flicks the last ball of that over through midwicket to pick up another couple of runs.

Brendon McCullum and Gautam Gambhir are the two openers for Kolkata Knight Riders, while left-arm spinner Murali Kartik will bowl the first over for Pune Warriors India.

Gambhir defends the first ball to the covers. The second ball is short in length and Gambhir pulls it behind square on the leg side for a boundary through the fine leg region. Interestingly, the ball kept a bit low on that occasion.

The next ball is wide down the leg side and Gambhir is forced to defend the next two balls. The Kolkata captain then clips the fifth ball on the leg side for a single and Brendon McCullum does the same off the last ball of that over.

Kolkata make one change to their team bringing in South African speedster Marchant de Lange for Brett Lee.

A defeaning roar for Pune captain Sourav Ganguly as Sunil Gavaskar introduces him ahead of the toss.

"There is a bit of nerves to be honest but it will go down as the game goes on," says Ganguly.

"It is a good wicket to bat and it won't change for the 40 overs," he adds.

Ganguly points out that Pune have made one change, bringing in Sri Lankan all-rounder Angelo Mathews in place of a spinner.
