IPL: Pollard, Rayudu take Mumbai home in close finish

Mumbai pull off an absolutely unbelievable five-wicket win.

Rayudu played an amazing innings of 81 from 54 balls, hitting six fours and four sixes. At the other end, Pollard cut loose towards the end to smash 52 from 31 balls, with the help of five fours and three sixes.

The two batsmen were involved in an unbroken stand of 122 runs in 65 balls to take Mumbai to victory.

Bangalore's fifth bowler proved too costly for them. Appanna went for 19 runs in one over while Gayle gave away 39 runs in 2.4 overs.

Mumbai looked out of the contest with 58 runs needed from four overs but Rayudu and Pollard scripted a remarkable turnaround.

Mumbai, despite their sloppiness in the field and their bowling, escaped to victory to jump to second in the standings with 18 points from 14 matches. Bangalore are still flirting with danger with 15 points from 14 matches.

Gayle bowls it wide down the leg side as Rayudu charges him. It hits the right-hander's foot and they get one run on the leg side.

Pollard finally gets into the act as he flicks a full ball on the pads over the midwicket fence for a six.

The next ball is a full toss and Gayle gets a thick outside edge which flies past the short thirdman fielder for a four.

Mumbai need 3 from 3 balls for victory.

Pollard finishes off the match in style as he pulls a short ball through midwicket for a four.

Mumbai need 23 runs from two overs for victory. Rayudu has slammed 78 from 50 balls, while Pollard is on 32 from 25 balls.

Zaheer to bowl his final over. Rayudu tries to loft a full toss through the off-side but loses his bat and gets a single to the cover region.

Pollard then gets a thick outside edge to a full toss as it speeds past the keeper for a four. He then takes a single to long-off.

Mumbai now need 17 from nine balls.

Rayudu flicks it to midwicket for one and Pollard fails to make most of a full toss mis-hitting it to midwicket for one.

Rayudu shuffles across his stumps and hits it to short fine leg region for one.

Mumbai need 41 runs from three overs for victory.

Vinay bowls from round the wicket and Pollard inside edges the first ball for a single. Rayudu then slams the next ball over the long-off fielder for a six.

Rayudu turning it now. He steps down the wicket and hammers the slower ball, short in length, through the covers for a four.

The next ball is sent high into the stands down the ground for another huge six.

Vinay guilty of bowling length balls at this stage allowing the batsmen to get under it and loft it high and wide.

17 runs from the first four balls of this over.

Vinay switches to over the wicket and Rayudu hits it to the deep cover region for one. He bowls a perfect yorker to bowl a dot ball to end the over.

Zaheer is back to bowl his third over. Pollard takes a single from the first ball.

Rayudu pulls a short ball over the midwicket fence for a six and then takes a single from the next ball to the same region.

Pollard then hammers the next ball down the ground for a boundary.

Rayudu gets a leading edge from the next ball as it flies over point for two runs.

Harshal Patel is back for his second spell. He starts with a short ball but Pollard fails to connect the pull shot and is struck on the pads. He misses the next ball too and scampers across for one leg bye.

Rayudu then pulls the next ball to deep square leg region for a single.

Pollard is lucky that the bat slips out of his hand as he is foxed by the slower delivery but luckily it goes over the fine leg fielder for two runs. The West Indian then heaves it through midwicket for a boundary as Pollard finally gets it off the middle.

Patel ends the over with another slower ball as Pollard is beaten all ends up but gets a leg bye.

Mumbai need 77 runs from six overs for victory. Will Mumbai take on part-timer Chris Gayle in this over and keep their hopes alive?

Pollard takes a single to midwicket and Rayudu sweeps the next ball for a boundary. A single each for both batsmen for the next two deliveries.

Rayudu then hammers the next ball down the ground for a boundary to complete his half-century from 41 balls.

11 runs from that over from Gayle.

That over brought Mumbai back into the hunt as they hit Gayle for 14 runs. Mumbai now need 81 runs from seven overs for victory.

Muralitharan comes on to bowl his fourth and final over. Rayudu cuts the first ball as Appanna makes a good diving stop at short thirdman. There is a huge appeal for run out against Pollard, who starts walking back, but replays show he has just made it to the crease.

Three more singles in that over as Murali gives just four runs in that over to finish with brilliant figures of one for 16 in four overs.

Mumbai need 95 runs from eight overs for victory.

Part-timer Chris Gayle into the attack now to replace Appanna who went for 19 runs in his first over.

Gayle starts with a wide down the leg side. A couple of singles before Rayudu hits Gayle for back to back boundaries, lofting him straight down the ground and the next one through midwicket.

Rayudu plays the first ball from Muralitharan straight to the fielder on the off-side.

But it seems the light has gone off in one of the light towers as play is suspended temporarily.

Tom Moody says on commentary that RCB are ahead in the Duckworth-Lewis calculations and if play does not resume, they will be declared the winners.

If the break lasts more than 10 minutes then the overs will start to reduce.

So play resumes finally and once again no reduction in the number of overs.

Rayudu gets a single after the resumption  on the leg side. Pollard plays out four dot balls with Murali bowling a wide in between to give away just two runs in that over.

At the halfway stage, Mumbai are 56 for five and need another 116 runs in 10 overs for victory.

It's spin from both ends now as left-arm spinner KP Appanna is introduced into the attack now.

Rayudu and Pollard take a single each from the first two balls each. Rayudu then gives Appanna the charge and lofts him over the cover region for a four.

Rayudu plays the next ball to long-off for one.

Pollard then gets into the act as he lofts it back over the bowler's head for a six. He gets another six off the next ball as he lifts it high over the long-on boundary to bring some cheer back to the Mumbai camp.

Rayudu then flicks it to deep midwicket to get a couple of runs and then cuts the next ball to the deep point fielder for one.

Harshal Patel to bowl his third over. He strikes Dwayne Smith on the pads with his first ball but it is going down the leg side and is ruled not out by the umpire.

A few balls later, Smith pulls a short ball through midwicket for a four.

But Patel has his man off the very next ball. Smith tries to force it through the off-side but is caught at point by Dilshan after scoring six.

Just six runs from that over from Harshal.

Veteran spinner Muttiah Muralitharan into the attack now. Karthik takes a single from the first ball to the leg side and Rayudu plays the next ball down the ground for one.

Four singles from the first four balls before Muralitharan claims the wicket of Karthik. The right-hander, who made 16 from 14 balls, looks to play the sweep but is caught at deep square leg.

Mumbai are reduced to 44 for four in the eighth over and a comeback looks nearly impossible at this stage.

However, Vinay gets revenge two balls later. Rohit tries to play it on the leg side but closes the face of the bat too early and is caught off a leading edge by the bowler for five.

Karthik gets his third boundary as he whips it through midwicket and Zaheer fails to stop it despite a dive from mid-on.

Zaheer to bowl the third over of the innings. Karthik defends the first two balls as Zaheer walks up to the right-hander and has a chat with him.

Karthik seems to have got fired up by the chat as he pulls a short ball over the square leg region for a four. He then flicks the next ball through midwicket for another boundary.

R Vinay Kumar bowls the second over. Gibbs lets the first ball go to the wicketkeeper as it moves away from the right-hander.

Gibbs (2) chips the next ball over midwicket and takes a late decision to take three runs but it costs him his wicket. KP Appanna's throw from deep midwicket catches him well short of his crease at the bowler's end.

Rohit Sharma gets off the mark with a single to the thirdman region, while Vinay follows that up with a wide down the leg side.

Dinesh Karthik ends the over with another single as he steers it to the thirdman region.

Zaheer Khan to bowl the first over as Herschelle Gibbs and Sachin Tendulkar open the innings for Mumbai.

Gibbs drives the first ball on the off-side before Zaheer bowls a wide delivery on the off-side.

Zaheer then gets it to pitch perfectly as Gibbs is beaten by one that moved away slightly. Gibbs then charges down the wicket to Zaheer but is beaten yet again by the movement.

Zaheer drifts the next ball on the pads to get a leg bye to the fine leg region.

A big shock for all Mumbai Indians fans as Sachin Tendulkar is dismissed off the first ball he faces. The plan works perfectly for Bangalore as Tendulkar chips it straight to the short point fielder placed for that particular shot.

Agarwal smashed 64 from 30 balls, hitting six four and four sixes. His onslaught helped Bangalore turn around things in the final few overs, as they scored 64 runs in the last five overs.

Munaf was the one to blame as far as Mumbai was concerned as he took one for 54 in four overs. Harbhajan also disappointed with the ball, taking one for 33 in three overs.

Mumbai will need to get off to a flying start but as seen earlier it will not be easy to bat on this wicket against the new ball.

Bangalore 171-6 (20 ovs) vs Mumbai

The temperamental Munaf to bowl the crucial 20th over. Agarwal steps down the wicket and casually lofts Munaf over long-off for a six to take Bangalore past the 50-run mark.

Agarwal then cracks the next ball past the point region for a boundary to bring up his half-century from just 26 balls.

Munaf continues to suffer as Agarwal chips it over the cover region for a four to make it 14 runs from the first three balls of his over.

He chips down the wicket again and lofts it back over the bowler and only a diving stop from Rohit at mid-on stops a certain boundary.

There is no stopping Agarwal at the moment. He then goes back and across and lofts Munaf into the stands over mid-on for the second six of the over.

He takes two runs from the final ball to make it 24 runs from that over. Munaf has conceded 45 runs from his last two overs.

Agarwal's blazing innings of 64 runs from just 30 balls has carried Bangalore to a huge 171 for six in their 20 overs.

Malinga to bowl the 19th over and facing him will be Agarwal, who has hit 28 from 20 balls. Agarwal picks the slower ball for a single to the point region.

New batsman Zaheer Khan charges down the wicket tries a wild heave off the first ball but misses the ball completely. He however gets a single from the next ball.

Agarwal continues to find the boundaries for Bangalore as he flicks it to midwicket region for a four.

The Bangalore youngster is quick to spot the slower ball from Malinga as he gives himself room and lofts it over the cover fence for a six.

Malinga gives 13 runs in that over to finish with 29 runs in four overs.

Mumbai's poor showing in the field and their error-prone bowling has helped Bangalore escape to a healthy total despite the horror start.

RP Singh starts his final over with a short wide delivery and Agarwal gets a thick outside as he tries to play the cut shot and gets a boundary.

But RP Singh fightbacks in that over with the wicket of Dilshan. The opener, who struggled to 47 from 50 balls, misses a full toss and is bowled.

Two balls later R Vinay Kumar is out for one as he tries to take two runs to the thirdman region but Smith's quick flat throw catches him short.

Malinga is back into the attack and he has two more overs to go. Agarwal hits the first ball to the point region for one and Dilshan is then beaten by a slower delivery.

Malinga then bowls a wide on the off-side and he steers the next ball to the thirdman region for one.

A single each for both batsmen before Dilshan clips a full toss to the fine leg region and gets two runs in the process.

Malinga ends the over with a quick over as Dilshan misses the pull shot.

RP Singh is brought back into the attack now. He continues Mumbai's sloppy showing in the field, starting with a big wide on the off-side.

The thirdman fielder is up inside the circle and RP Singh is lucky that he hit it straight to the fielder that time for one.

Agarwal gives himself a bit of room and chips the next ball over the point fielder for a four.

The youngster then lofts a full delivery over the long-off fielder for a six and takes a single to end the over.

Pollard claims the big wicket of AB de Villiers in his second over. The South African looks to blast it through the off-side but is caught by Malinga at mid-off after scoring 14 from 13 balls.

Mayank Agarwal is the new batsman and gets off the mark with a single to mid-on. Dilshan plays out two dot balls to end the over.

A successful over from Pollard as he gets a wicket while giving away just three runs.

Harbhajan to bowl his third over. De Villiers hits the first ball to long-off for a single and Dilshan gets it on the leg side for another single.

De Villiers then smashes a short ball from Harbhajan through the covers for a boundary as Bangalore look to up the tempo.

Dilshan then jumps down the wicket and lofts Harbhajan over the midwicket region for a six.

Harbhajan is hit for 16 runs in that over as Bangalore continue to make good progress.

Medium pacer Kieron Pollard into the attack now. Dilshan plays and misses the first two balls outside the off-stump and Pollard gets the ball to move slightly.

He then charges down the wicket and opens the face of the bat at the last moment to get a boundary to the thirdman region.

The right-hander throws his bat at a wide delivery to chip it over the off-side for a single and de Villiers ends the over with another single.

At the halfway stage, Bangalore are 69 for three with Dilshan on 27 from 31 balls and AB on six from seven balls.

Harbhajan bowling from round the wicket. There is a huge appeal for LBW off the first ball against Dilshan but the umpire is not interested.

Dilshan then flicks it to the leg side and scampers across for two runs.

Munaf then frustrates Mumbai further with his sloppy fielding. Dilshan hits it to the point region where Munaf lets it go through his hands to give away a boundary.

Harbhajan is not impressed at all with that shoddy piece of fielding by Munaf.

And Sunil Gavaskar says on commentary,"he will probably have a go at the ball now". Munaf has had a go at everyone today, so won't be surprised if he does that too!

Malinga to bowl his second over and Mumbai will want him to get the in-form AB de Villiers out early.

De Villiers hits the first two balls straight to fielders before a single to the leg side form the third ball.

Malinga then bowls a quick bouncer to compatriot Dilshan who sways out of the way before taking a single to long-on to bring up Bangalore's 50.

De Villiers ends the over with two runs to the midwicket region.

Captain Harbhajan Singh into the attack now. Dilshan sweeps the first ball and it goes straight to the fielder at deep square leg for one.

Tiwary then takes the attack to Harbhajan. The youngster gives himself a bit room and lofts it over the long-off region for a six.

However, Tiwary falls off the next ball as he is dismissed hit wicket for 15. Tiwary went too far back in his crease as he looked to whip it on the leg side and his right foot hit the stumps.

AB de Villiers is the new batsman and he gets off the mark immediately with a single.

Lasith Malinga into the attack now. Dilshan takes a single from the first ball. Tiwary gets a lifeline from the next ball as RP Singh drops a tough catch at mid-off as he dived full length to his left.

Tiwary continues with his wild swing. He looks to play another big shot on the off-side but lobs it high on the off-side. Miscommunication from two Mumbai fielders means no one can get to the catch.

Malinga ends the over with two slower balls as Bangalore reach 40 for two after six overs.

Munaf drifts it on the pads and Dilshan gets one leg bye on the leg side.

Tiwary then looks to pull but does not time it well as it goes to midwicket. The left-hander then tries the pull shot again and this time it hits the leading edge and flies over the bowler for a four.

Munaf then oversteps and it is a Free Hit for Tiwary, who is trying his best to hit Bangalore out of trouble.

He follows that with another no ball as the pacer over steps the mark again. This time Dilshan has the Free Hit but Munaf bowls a wide down the leg side.

Munaf has totally lost it. He over steps the mark again as Dilshan smashes it through the covers and another Free Hit for Bangalore.

The Mumbai pacer has lost his cool out in the middle as he has an angry exchange of words with the umpire.

Dilshan cannot make most of this Free Hit as he is beaten outside the off-stump trying to play a wild heave. And this time Munaf has a few words with the batsman.

Dilshan then takes a single from the next ball to the cover region.

Tiwary finally gets it off the middle as he pulls a short ball over the midwicket region for a six.

Mumbai lose the plot after a good start courtesy of Munaf, who gives away 21 runs in that over.

New batsman Saurabh Tiwary is beaten as RP Singh gets it to leave the left-hander and then lets the next ball go to the keeper.

A single each for both batsmen before Tiwary jumps down the wicket to RP Singh but fails to get the ball away and is beaten off the last ball.

Another good over from RP Singh as he concedes just two runs.

Dilshan takes a single from the first ball as he clips it on the leg side.

And Munaf strikes with the big wicket of Gayle off the next ball. The Bangalore opener gives himself room and looks to flay it through the off-side but ends up dragging it back on to his stumps to be bowled.

Virat Kohli off the mark with three runs as he clips a full delivery to the square leg region.

However,  Bangalore lose another wicket off the next ball.

Dilshan hits it to the point region where Gibbs dives full length to his right and sends a quick throw back to catch Kohli run out for three. Kohli and Dilshan had a huge misunderstanding and he was very angry after getting run out.

RP Singh to bowl the second over as Mumbai decide to hold Lasith Malinga back.

Dilshan defends the first ball and then hits the next ball, short in length to the covers, where Dwayne Smith makes a good stop.

He hits the next two balls straight to fielders before a single to the thirdman region as he looks to let the ball go very late but hits his bat.

Gayle then charges down the wicket and looks to heave RP Singh down the ground but misses the shot completely.

Bangalore's dangerous opening duo -- Chris Gayle and Tillakaratne Dilshan -- walk out to open in gloomy conditions and bowling to them will be pacer Munaf Patel.

Gayle lets the first two balls go to the keeper as Munaf gets a lot of bounce and movement.

The third ball is again wide of the stumps and Gayle decides not to offer a shot again.

The left-hander punches the next ball straight to fielders on the off-side.

Gayle has had enough of playing the waiting game. He launches into Munaf and lofts him straight back over his head for a huge six to get Bangalore off the mark in some style.

Mumbai Indians captain Harbhajan Singh wins the toss and elects to bowl against Royal Challengers Bangalore.

"It is a green wicket, a bit damp," says Harbhajan justifying his decision to bowl first.

The match will start at 450pm IST but there will be no reduction in the number of overs despite the delayed start.

So finally some good news from Bangalore.

The covers have come off and the toss will take place at 435 pm IST.

The two captains out in the middle now for the toss -- Virat Kohli will captain RCB, which means Daniel Vettori will sit out this match too.

There is a slight drizzle at the ground as the toss continues to be delayed. The umpires are waiting for the drizzle to stop before a call can be taken on the toss and the start of match.

Stats guru Mohandas Menon, who is at the M Chinnaswamy stadium in Bangalore, gives further updates on Twitter with regards to the weather.

"from Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bangalore (3:41pm). Its become very cloudy. Could have some rain anytime now. Covers are still on!," Menon writes.
15:35   IPL: Rain delays start of Bangalore-Mumbai match
The start of the 62nd match of the IPL between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Mumbai Indians has been delayed because of rain at the M Chinnaswamy stadium in Bangalore, on Monday.

The toss has been delayed because the pitch and some parts of the outfield are still under covers.

The weather forecast is not encouraging as far as the match is concerned with more rain predicted later in the day.

Royal Challengers Bangalore are currently fifth in the standings with 15 points from 13 matches, while Mumbai Indians are third with 16 points from as many games.
