However, Indian batsmen survive the remaining overs.

The hosts end Day One on 323 for four, with Pujara batting on 98 and Yuvraj on 24, the two having put on 40 runs for the fifth wicket.

India reach the 300-run mark in the 84th over.

Kohli (on four) is let off by Jonathan Trott at first slip, Swann being the unfortunate bowler.

The batsman's ordeal is over as Swann rattles his stumps. Kohli's 67-ball 19 was inclusive of three boundaries and he put on 33 runs for the fourth wicket with Pujara.

Yuvraj Singh comes out to replace him.

India 283 for four after 77 overs.

Scorecard:

Virat Kohli is struggling at the crease, he is yet to score in 29 balls. He gets off the mark with a boundary off Broad, off the 30th ball he faces.

Pujara though is going from strength to strength.

India 258 for three after 66 overs.

Sachin Tendulkar comes out to replace Sehwag. He doesn't survive for long, Swann having him caught by Samit Patel for 13.

Pujara takes India to a comfortable position at tea, with the hosts having reached the 250-run mark in the 57th over.

India 250 for three after 58 overs.

Scorecard:

A couple off Broad helps Pujara complete his second Test fifty. The Saurashtra batsman scored a magnificent 72 on debut against Australia in Bangalore in 2010 but couldn't repeat the feat since.

However, Swann returns to rattle Sehwag's timber. The 34-year-old's run-a-ball 117 was inclusive of 15 boundaries and a six and he put on 90 runs for the second wicket with Pujara.

India 225-2 after 51 overs.

Scorecard:

A boundary, followed by a couple, by Pujara (off Bresnan) completes the 50-run partnership for the second wicket.

The hosts reach the 200-run mark in the 46th over, courtesy a single by Sehwag.

India 209 for one after 47 overs.

Cheteshwar Pujara has come out to join Sehwag. A boundary from his blade, off Swann, helps the hosts reach the 150-run mark in the 36th over.

Sehwag continues with his aggression reaching his 23rd Test century with a boundary off Swann. It's the 34-year-old's second century against England, after his 106 at Trent Bridge back in 2002.

It is his first century in two years (and 30 innings), his last (173) having also come at Motera, against New Zealand in 2010.

India 170 for one after 40 overs.

Scorecard:

Gautam Gambhir, on 45, survives a stumping chance off Graeme Swann. However, the bowler has the last laugh, rattling his stumps three balls later.

Gambhir's 111-ball 45 was inclusive of four boundaries and he put on 134 runs for the opening wicket with Sehwag.

India 134 for one after 30 overs.

India reach the 100-run mark in the 20th over.

Samit Patel is introduced into the attack in the 27th over, replacing Stuaart Broad (9-1-30-0). Sehwag welcomes him with a boundary first ball. Seven come off his over.

India 120 without loss after 28 overs when the teams head back.

At lunch, Sehwag is unbeaten on 79 and Gambir on 37.

Graeme Swann bowls the first over after tea. He concedes four runs first up.

Sehwag reaches his 33rd Test fifty with a single off Swann.

It is sheer coincidence that Sehwag had scored his last Test ton - 173 vs New Zealand - at this venue two years back.

He celebrates the same with a couple of boundaries and a six off Bresnan.

India 99 without loss after 19 overs.

Scorecard:

Tim Bresnan replaces an expensive James Anderson (4-0-24-0) in the attack in the ninth over. He concedes just a single first up.

The home team reached the 50-run mark in the 12th over.

India 61 without loss after 13 overs.

Scorecard:

Stuart Broad is keeping a tight line but James Anderson has conceded boundaries to both Gambhir and Sehwag.

In fact the latter cuts loose with three boundaries in Anderson's fourth over.

India 36 without loss after eight overs.

Scorecard:

Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir open the batting for India and it is James Anderson first up for England. Four runs come off the first over.

Stuart Broad shares the new ball and concedes two runs first up.

India 10 without loss after three overs.
