Pak 123-7 (20 ovs) vs SL 139-4

SRI LANKA BEAT PAKISTAN BY 16 RUNS

Kulasekara to bowl the crucial final over with Pakistan needing 23 from six balls.

He starts with a slower ball that Akmal fails to read and he refuses to take a single on the leg side. The next ball is right in the slot but Akmal misses with the big swing and it is another dot ball.

Pakistan can only win if Akmal can hit the next four deliveries for sixes.

But he can only stroke it to sweeper cover for a single and Gul hits it down to long-on for one. 21 from 2 balls

Akmal lofts it over the point region for a boundary and the last ball is hit straight to the covers.

22:19  Pak need 23 runs from last over for win:   - Scorecard

Pak 117-7 (19 ovs) vs SL 139-4

Malinga to bowl the 19th over. Akmal strikes the first ball straight to point where Jayawardene fires a good quick return to Malinga, who breaks the stumps at the non-striker's end but the benefit of doubt goes to the batsman Gul.

He plays the same shot off the next ball as Jayawardene fields again for a single. 26 from 10 balls.

Malinga bowls a good yorker that beats Gul before a wide delivery outside the off-stump. He continues to bowl fast as another full delivery beats Gul, who has a big swing at it.

Malinga is getting his yorkers bang on target as Gul plays the next one to midwicket for one.

Akmal drives it to sweeper cover and he can get only a single as Pak need 23 runs from the last over for victory.

Mendis to bowl the 18th over. Akmal drives the first ball on the leg side for two runs. He charges the next delivery but gets a thick outside edge over the point region for another couple followed by a single to long-off.

Tanvir then chips down the wicket but is beaten all ends up to be stumped for eight.

Pakistan keep losing wicket to make it difficult for themselves. 27 from 14 balls.

Umar Gul is the new batsman and he offers no stroke to the first ball and he defends the second ball back to the bowler. Is he playing for stumps???

Pak 108-6 (17 ovs) vs SL 139-4

Malinga comes back for his second spell. He starts with a slower ball which Tanvir reads well as he flicks it over midwicket for a four. The second ball is fast and full and it beats Tanvir outside the off-stump.

The third ball is again a dot ball as it goes straight to the fielder at cover.

Malinga is bowling at full pace now, as Tanvir can only defend a 143kph yorker back to the pacer.

Tanvir drives the fifth ball down the ground for one and Malinga then bowls a wide outside the off-stump followed by a single to Akmal.

Mathews comes back to bowl his final over. Tanvir gets a single from the second ball before a fumble from Malinga at fine leg gives Akmal two runs.

Akmal then gives Mathews the charge before chipping it over the covers for a boundary before a single to midwicket as Pak bring up their 100 in the 16th over.

Tanvir drives a slower delivery to the covers to end the over with a single.

Just when Pakistan were building a partnership, they lose the big wicket of Hafeez! Herath gets his second wicket as he gets Pakistan captain Hafeez stumped for 42.

Sri Lanka have a slight edge in this contest now and they consolidate it further as Herath gets the wicket of Afridi with the very next ball.

Afridi was done in by the arm delivery from Herath which came in and sneaked through his defences.

Herath on a hat-trick and Tanvir defends the first ball. He drives the next two balls straight to fielders on the off-side as the required run rate continues to grow.

Tanvir flicks the last ball on the leg side for one.

Herath bowled a superb over, taking two wickets, while giving away just a single. His finishes with good figures of three for 25 in four overs.

Mendis is back in the attack. Akmal is beaten from the first ball before the right-hander cuts it past point for a boundary.

Akmal then clips it on the leg side for a single and then Hafeez gets one.

Akmal drives it through the covers where the fielder fails to stop it cleanly to give away two runs.

Hafeez reverse sweeps the first ball from Hafeez over the point region for a four and two balls later he lofts it over long-off for a six.

Hafeez then picks a single to long-on before Umar Akmal drives it to long-off for another single.

Pakistan get a big lifeline as Hafeez is dropped at long-on by Malinga as he looked to loft Mathews down the ground.

And two balls later, Hafeez makes Sri Lanka wince further as he drills Mathews through midwicket for a four.

How costly will that drop from Malinga prove for Sri Lanka?

Pak are 71 for four after 12 overs, needing 69 runs from eight overs for victory.

Herath comes on to bowl his second over. Hafeez steers the first ball to short thirdman for one before Malik chips it over the cover region for two runs.

Malik then nudges the fifth ball past Malinga at short thirdman for two more runs before he is bowled off the final ball.

That delivery gripped and turned past the defensive prod of Malik's bat. What a delivery! Pakistan in real trouble now...

Mathews comes back for his second spell and he picks the wicket of Jamshed with his first ball.

Replays show that Jamshed was unlucky to be given out as the ball clearly pitched outside the leg-stump and a big error from umpire Rod Tucker.

Kamran Akmal gets off the mark with one and Hafeez drives it to extra cover for another single.

Mathews then picks his second wicket of the over as Akmal is foxed by the slower delivery and lobs a simple catch to Jayawardene on the leg side.

Shoaib Malik is beaten off the first ball as he tries to drive outside the off-stump but misses.

Left-arm spinner Rangana Herath into the attack now. Jamshed is hit on the pads but the impact is outside the leg stump and they take one leg bye.

Hafeez takes on the leg side and Jamshed gets one to the short fine leg region two balls later.

Hafeez steers it past point to get two more runs and a slog sweep gets him a single to end the over.

Ajantha Mendis to Jamshed, who takes a single from the second ball. The third ball turns a lot and bounces a bit too as Hafeez is beaten as he looks to play the late cut.

He then slog sweeps Mendis over midwicket where Malinga misfields on the boundary to give away three runs.

Jamshed takes another single before Hafeez chips it over the covers for a boundary.

Hafeez finally gets it off the middle as he drives a full delivery down the ground for a four. He lofts the next ball over the bowler as Rangana Herath makes a good effort running to his left from long-on but fails to hold on.

Hafeez is again beaten outside the off-stump before a single from the fifth ball. Nasir Jamshed takes a single from the last ball of that over.

Mystery spinner Ajantha Mendis into the attack now. Hafeez is struggling at the moment as he looks to sweep but misses and the next ball is superbly stopped by Dilshan in the covers, that looked a certain boundary.

Hafeez is struggling with just two from 14 balls.

Hafeez then plays it on the leg side for a single before Nazir breaks the shackles as he sweeps Mendis fine on the leg side for a four.

Mendis provides SL with the breakthrough as he bowls Imran Nazir as the right-hander plays the ball back on to his stumps.

Malinga to bowl his second over as SL look to make the breakthrough. SL usually like to keep his overs for the end, but now they are in a desperate situation.

Nazir clips the first ball on the leg side for one and Hafeez continues to struggle as Malinga foxes him again with the change of pace.

Another slower ball which hits Hafeez on the pads for a leg bye and Nazir defends the last ball.

Just four runs from the last two overs as Pak reach 26 from five overs.

Pak 24-0 (4 ovs) vs SL 139-4

Kulasekara to bowl his second over. Hafeez is beaten outside the off-stump and defends the second ball to point before clipping the third ball to deep square leg for one.

Nazir plays the next ball on the leg side for one before Hafeez is beaten of the final ball as he throws his bat to a wide ball.

Lasith Malinga into the attack now. He starts with a slower ball which Nazir defends and Malinga follows with a horror delivery down the leg side, which even keeper Sangakarra can't get to for five wides.

Another slower ball as Nazir gloves it fine on the off-side for another couple.

Malinga continues to fox Nazir with the slower ball as he is struck on the pads but umpire Taufel turns it down with the ball looking to slide down the leg side.

Another slower ball which hits Nazir on the upper thighs and the last ball slips down the leg side as Sangakkara makes a good stop.

Malinga bowled five slower balls in his first over to keep Nazir guessing all the time.

Pak 15-0 (2 ovs) vs SL 139-4

Nuwan Kulasekara to bowl the second over. Nazir charges down the wicket off the first ball but Kula bowls a good ball on his body which the batsman can just block.

Kula then cuts Nazir in half with a superb delivery that shapes in sharply, he had no clue about that delivery.

Nazir then comes down and tries to slog it across the line on the leg side and once again he misses it.

Nazir then shuffles across and looks to play it on the leg side but misses and it is given a wide and Kula drifts further with the next ball for another wide on the leg side.

Nazir then steers the fourth delivery fine on the off-side for a boundary as the thirdman fielder has no chance with that.

Pakistan look to steal a quick single from the last ball as Nazir drops the ball on the leg side but Kulasekara is quick to get to the ball and luckily for Pakistan, he misses the stumps at the striker's end.

20:51  SL struggle to 139 on slow pitch:  - Scorecard

Pak 8-0 (1 over) vs SL 139-4

Angelo Mathews will open the bowling for the hosts and up against him will be Pakistan openers Mohammad Hafeez and Imran Nazir.

Hafeez gets his team off the mark with a single from the second ball on the leg side.

Nazir tries to cut the next delivery as Dilshan makes a good diving effort at point but he fails to hold on and it goes for two runs.

Nazir then looks to pull the short delivery but misses and there is a loud appeal for caught behind but umpire Simon Taufel says no.

Nazir is quick to pounce on the loose delivery as he lofts a wide delivery Mathews over the cover region for a boundary followed by a single.

SL 139-4 (20 ovs) vs Pak

Mathews gets a thick outside edge off the first ball which goes past the wicketkeeper for a boundary and then takes a single.

Perera then smashes it back powerfully as Gul ducks for cover and so does the umpire and it goes for another four straight down the ground.

The mid-off is inside the circle and Perera lofts it over that fielder for back to back fours.

The next ball is a high full toss and Perera hits it to midwicket for just one.

Mathews hits the last ball to long-off and the two batsmen cross for two runs as SL finish on 139 for four.

16 runs came from the last over from Gul, which helped Sri Lanka add some useful runs at the end.

Sri Lanka continue to slip. Mendis steps down the wicket to Ajmal, who beats him with a very wide delivery as wicketkeeper Akmal completes an easy stumping.

Angelo Mathews turns the ball on the leg side for one and Perera smashes it to long-off for another single.

Mathews slog sweeps it to deep midwicket for another single and Perera fails to get the next ball away.

The fifth ball is hit down the ground to long-off where Malik gets the ball back quickly to keep it down to just one.

Mathews chips down the wicket and plays it to long-on where again Malik keeps it down to one.

20:24   - Scorecard

SL 117-3 (18 ovs) vs Pak

Gul with his second over. Dilshan has a wild swing off the first ball but he is nowhere near to the ball, which is full and swings away from the right-hander.

The second ball is a low full toss and Dilshan gently taps it to midwicket for one.

The third ball is a perfect yorker as Mendis fails to keep it out and he is lucky that the ball was not on the stumps as SL take their tally of dot balls to 50.

Mendis then shuffles across his stumps but misses and is trapped right in front of the stumps. The umpires want to have a look at the replays which show that Gul overstepped and it is given a no-ball as Mendis gets a lifeline.

Mendis hits the free hit ball down the ground to long-on for just a single.

Dilshan is then dismissed leg before wicket as he looks to play across the line but misses and is struck right in front of the stumps.

Dilshan's struggle finally comes to end. He never looked comfortable out in the middle and played a lot of dot balls, especially in the middle overs, as SL struggled to accelerate against the spinners.

Gul ends the over with another quick yorker which Thisara Perera fails to keep out but it goes back to the keeper.

Ajmal comes on to bowl his third over. Dilshan continues to play risk-free cricket as he strokes the first ball to point for one.

Mendis looks to heave it on the leg side but doesn't get it off the middle for one.

Dilshan breaks the shackles as he pulls a short ball past the short fine leg fielder for a boundary, his third of the innings in 39 balls.

The right-hander hits it on the off-side for one.

Mendis fails to get a run from the last two balls as Pakistan continue their good showing with the ball.

SL 107-2 (16 ovs) vs Pak

Umar Gul into the attack now, once again very late in the innings. Mendis is beaten off the first two balls before the left-hander hits it on the leg side for a couple.

Sri Lanka are struggling to get going as Mendis defends the fourth ball back to the bowler.

The fifth ball is short and Mendis gets it just over the fielder at short midwicket, who leaped high but failed to catch it to give away two runs.

The last ball is again short but it is too high and is called a wide.

Mendis pulls the last ball again through the midwicket region for another couple a seven runs come from that over.

Mendis edges the first ball to short thirdman for one before Dilshan gets one from the next ball.

Mendis then reverse sweeps Hafeez for a boundary through the off-side before he plays two dot balls.

Mendis chops the last ball to long-off for a single.

Afridi into the attack now. Dilshan and Mendis take a single each before the former despatches a full toss through midwicket for a four.

He plays another two dot balls, blocking it back to the bowler before two runs on the leg side.

Dilshan is on 27 from 36 balls, out of which 18 are dot balls.

Dilshan looks to reverse sweep Hafeez but once again he fails to time it and gets one on the off-side.

Sangakkara defends the next ball before he is beaten by one, which turns right past the face of the bat. Akmal whips the bails off in a flash and that appeal is referred to the third umpire, who rules in the batsman's favour.

Sangkkara looks to heave it on the leg side but the thick outside edge goes to midwicket for two runs.

The left-hander then chips down the track and looks to loft it down the ground but is caught at long-on for 18.

Dilshan ends the over with a single to deep midwicket as Jeevan Mendis joins him in the middle.

Ajmal comes back, to bowl his second over. The first ball is short and wide which Sangakkara cuts through point for a four before a misfield at long-off gives him two runs.

Sangakkara is going for it right from the word go. He then plays the inside out chip over the cover for another four to race to 15 from six balls with the help of three fours.

Two more singles as Ajmal concedes 12 runs in that over.

SL 68-1 (11 ovs) vs Pak

Dilshan flicks the first ball to midwicket for one before Afridi makes the breakthrough for Pakistan with the wicket of Jayawardene, who was caught at short fine leg region by Hasan as he looked to scoop over that fielder.

Kumar Sangakkara starts off in some style as he crashes the first ball he faces through midwicket for a four and hits the next one to deep square leg for one.

Dilshan is struck on the pads off the last delivery but umpire Rod Tucker turns down the LBW appeal as the ball looks to be going down the leg side.

Dilshan has still not got settled to the pace of the wicket, struggling on 17 from 28 balls.

SL 62-0 (10 ovs) vs Pak

Hasan will complete his spell as he comes on to bowl his fourth and final over. Dilshan takes a quick single from the first ball as Jayawardene makes his crease his in time despite a direct hit from the cover fielder.

Jayawardene then reverse sweeps a delivery way outside the leg-stump over the point fielder for a couple.

He then goes the other way as he plays the conventional sweep over the short fine leg region for two more runs.

Jayawardene hits the fourth ball to the covers where it drops just short of the fielder before the next one goes the fielder at short thirdman region.

Jayawardene ends the over with a four as he chips down the wicket and lofts it down the ground for a four.

Dilshan strokes the first ball from Afridi to extra cover for two runs before a single from the next ball.

Jayawardene then looks to steer it fine on the off-side but is beaten as Afridi bowls the arm delivery, which goes straight.

Jayawardene then lofts the next ball over the cover region for a fours to take Sri Lanka past the 50-run mark, in the 9th over.

SL 44-0 (8 ovs) vs Pak

Hasan comes back for a new spell after just one over from Ajmal. Jayawardene takes a single ball from the second ball as he taps it to the cover region before Dilshan is beaten yet again.

He then drives it to long-off for a single as his score moves to 10 from 20 balls.

Jayawardene then plays late and drives it to the cover region for one before Dilshan plays the quicker ball in the same region for another single.

It's spin from both ends now as Shahid Afridi comes on to bowl the seventh over.

The first ball turns a bit which Dilshan strokes to extra cover for a single.

The second ball turned and bounced, that was unplayable and Jayawardene offered no stroke.

The third ball again turned as Jayawardene was beaten trying to defend it. He uses the reverse sweep to good effect again, getting it over the point fielder for a four.

He taps the fifth ball on the off-side for a single before Dilshan misses one on his pads.

Saeed Ajmal comes into the attack now. He starts with a rank long hop and Jayawardene pulls it behind square on the leg side for a boundary.

Jayawardene then looks to play the reverse sweep but misses the ball as it goes down the leg side and keeper Akmal misses it to for two byes.

He plays the third ball on the leg side before being beaten as he tried to play the sweep.

Jayawardene then tried to play the late cut but once again was beaten. He finally connected with the last ball as he played the reverse sweep past the short thirdman fielder for a four.

SL 24-0 (5 ovs) vs Pak

Tanvir will bowl his third over. He starts with another beauty as Jayawardene flashes his bat at that one which again moves enough to beat him.

Jayawardene then charges down the wicket as Tanvir bowls a slower one and the right-hander drags it to the leg side for one.

Tanvir bowls a quick bouncer to Dilshan, who fails to connect with the pull shot followed by a wide on the off-side.

Dilshan is completely at sea out in the middle as Tanvir beats him again outside the off-stump. He gets an outside edge off the last ball but there is no slip to catch it as wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal makes a good diving effort and gets a bit of glove to keep it down to two.

Dilshan inside edges the first ball as he looks to play off the backfoot and it goes close to his stumps, but he gets the second ball to mid-on for one.

Jayawardene then gets his front foot across and sweeps Raza behind square on the leg side for a boundary.

Jayawardene fails to beat the point fielder as he hits the next two balls straight to the fielder there before a single on the leg side to end the over.

Tanvir to bowl his second over. Jayawardene lets the first ball go through to the keeper before he is beaten by the second ball, which moves enough to go past the outside edge.

Jayawardene gets an edge off the third ball, which goes to the thirdman region for a four. There was a mini explosion of dust as the ball hit the track, the pitch looks to be struggling to hold together.

Dilshan is beaten off the next ball as he once again throws his bat at the outswinger and then hits the fifth ball to the fielder at point.

Dilshan taps the ball on the pitch and runs across for a quick single.

Just two runs from that over from Tanvir.

Left-arm spinner Raza Hasan to bowl the second over. He starts from round the wicket and Jayawardene drives the first ball through the covers for a four.

Dilshan plays the next ball to the fielder at point before he cuts it through the point region for a four to get off the mark.

The next three balls are full and on the stumps, which Dilshan can only hit straight to the fielders on the off-side.

Mahela Jayawardene and Tillakaratne Dilshan will open the batting for Sri Lanka, while Sohail Tanvir will bowl the first over.

The first ball bounces and moves away from the right-hander which Jayawardene lets go to the wicketkeeper.

The second ball is down the leg side which Jayawardene helps round the corner and despite a diving effort from Umar Gul on the fine leg boundary, it goes for a four.

The third ball is again short of good length and Jayawardene defends it off the backfoot, on the leg side.

Jayawardene flicks the fourth ball to the fine leg region for a single.

Tillakaratne Dilshan defends the fifth ball before he is beaten off the last ball as it moves away from the right-hander. He was lucky not to have edged that!

19:00  SL elect to bat vs Pak in SF:   Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene wins the toss and as expected elects to bat against Pakistan in the first semi-final of the World Twenty20 in Colombo, on Thursday.

The hosts have made one change with left-arm spinner Rangana Herath replacing mystery spinner Akila Dananjaya.

Jayawardene said the pitch is looking dry and they will look to post a good total before letting their spinners take advantage of the track.

Pakistan also made a change as they brought in left-arm pacer Sohail Tanvir for all-rounder Abdul Razzaq.

The second semi-final will be played between West Indies and Australia on Friday.

18:55  Some interesting stats heading into the semi-finals:

  • Only once in 12 games at the R Premadasa stadium in Colombo in the ongoing World Twenty20, the team winning the toss has won the game.
  • Pakistan holds a 2-1 advantage over Sri Lanka in World Twenty20s. They had beaten them in the 2009 World T20 final and before that had got the better of them in 2007.
  • Overall, Pakistan enjoys a good record over Sri Lanka in T20s, having won six of the nine matches played between the two teams.
