Albie Morkel has him caught by Vijay, the latter making up for his earlier blemish, at third man in his first over.

So the defending champions have lost both their openers early and suddenly it looks as if they have a mountain to climb.

Sachin Tendulkar and Dwayne Smith open the batting for Mumbai Indians and it will be Doug Bollinger first up for Chennai.

Smith helps himself to a couple of boundaries in the over as Mumbai get 11 off it. Ben Hilfenhaus to share the new ball.

He concedes only two runs but is unlucky as Vijay drops Smith (on nine) in the over.

Malinga completes a five-wicket haul in his final over, having Wridhimann Saha (5) caught behind. 

The Sri Lankan speedster's figures make for an impressive read: 4-0-32-five.

R Ashwin (13 not out) hits a boundary and a six off the last ball, off Johnson's last over, to prop up the spirits.

Chennai, after a flying start, manage 173 for eight in their stipulated 20 overs.

Scorecard:

Dhoni smashes Malinga for a six over midwicket followed by a boundary. However, the bowler has the last laugh having the captain caught by Smith at backward point.

Dhoni's 19-ball 35 was inclusive of three hits to the fence and two over it and he put on 34 runs for the fifth wicket with Ravindra Jadeja.

The Sri Lankan has Albie Morkel (0) caught by Tendulkar off his last ball.

Chennai 145 for six after 17 overs.

MS Dhoni is fortunate to survive a run out attempt.

Dwayne Smith replaces Ojha (4-0-30-1) in the attack in the 14th over and strikes first ball having Badrinath (2) caught behind. 

Dhoni eases the pressure with a boundary and a six, over deep backward point, off the over. 

Chennai 131 for four after 15 overs.

A boundary in the first ball off Harbhajan's second over helps Du Plessis complete the fastest fifty of the tournament, off just 27 balls.

However, the return of Malinga brings an end to the South African's innings, the Sri Lankan having him caught by Rohit Sharma at long-on for 52. 

Malinga strikes again in the same over having Raina (8) caught by Johnson

Chennai, having lost three quick wickets, reduced 101 for three after 11 overs.

Scorecard:

Harbhajan Singh into the attack in the eight over and Vijaya hits him for successive boundaries. 

However, Ojha, in his third over, does give Mumbai their first good moment by rattling Vijay's (39) timber. 

Vijay's 25-ball knock was inclusive of five fours and two sixes and he put on 86 runs for the opening wicket with Du Plessis, off just 49 balls.

Chennai 94 for one after nine overs.

Scorecard:

Kulkarni goes for 15 runs in his second over with Vijay hitting a six over midwicket and following it up with two boundaries.

Harbhajan introduces Lasith Malinga into the attack in the fifth over and Du Plessis welcomes him with a boundary, the shot helping Chennai reach the 50-run mark. 

The South African helps himself to a couple of more boundaries in the over.

Johnson though bowls a good second over.

Chennai 66 without loss after six overs.

Scorecard:

Faf du Plessis and Murali Vijay open the batting for Chennai and it will be Pragyan Ojha first up for Mumbai.

The left arm spinner concedes 10 runs first up with Vijay hitting a six over cover.

Dhaval Kulkarni to share the new ball. He gives away five runs in his first over. 

Ojha is replaced by Mitchell Johnson in the third over. The Australian goes for 16 with Du Plessis hitting a six over long on followed by two boundaries.

Chennai 31 without loss after three overs.

Mumbai Indians won the toss and invited Chennai Super Kings to bat first in their Champions League T20 match in Johannesburg on Saturday.

"Weather is also in favour of the bowlers. So we might use that as well," reasons captain Harbhajan Singh.

His opposite number didn't seem too perturbed with the toss loss.

"We need to get off to a good start and don't have anything else in mind," said MS Dhoni.

Both the teams remain unchanged.
