Meanwhile, R Ashwin is just one wicket away from inching closer to a personal milestone. He needs just one wicket to become the first bowler to complete 50 wickets in eight Tests.

Zaheer to bowl the first over of the day in overcast conditions. He starts from over the wicket with a short delivery which Jeetan Patel lets go to the wicketkeeper. The second one is pitched up and a bit wide tempting Patel to have a go but he misses. He nudges the fourth ball on the leg side for a quick single to get New Zealand underway on day three.

Right-hander Trent Boult, who bowls left-handed defends the last two deliveries to end the first over of the day.
