LIVE World T20: England trash Afghanistan by 116 runs

Clinical England trashed Afghanistan by 116 runs.

 

Chasing 197 for victory, the Afghans were never in the hunt after losing wickets in the first two overs.

 

In the end they were bundled out for 80 in 17.2 overs. Gulbodin Naib waged a lone fight for Afghans with 44.

Afghanistan feeling the pressure of big score are commiting suicide by throwing the wickets away.

 

After the initial quick blows, the minnows lost skipper Nuwroz Mangal, Karim Sadiq and Asghar Stanikzai in matter of 10 balls to put England firmly in control of the match.

 

At the end of 6 overs, Afghanistan were 22-5.

Mohammad Shahzad is on his way back to the pavillion as he skied on to Stuart Broad for one.

 

Shahzad looking to blast Finn out of the ground, got it high on the bat -- too quick for the bumpy batsman.

 

One ball later Jade Dernbach strikes as he removes Shafiqullah for a duck. Afghans are commiting a suicide here as they are throwing their bat at everything.

Luke Wright's blitz powered England to 196-5 after being put into bat by Afghanistan.

 

Wright who came in the second over, smoked 55-ball 99, which included 8 boundaries and six massive sixes.

 

Alex Hales gave him good company putting on 27-ball 31.

 

Afghanistan bowlers bowled well initially, but then poor fielding again cost them the game dropping Wright twice.

Luke Wright's counter attacking cricket has managed to lift England out a precarious situation to put them in command.

 

England who had lost Craig Kieswetter in the first over itself, played themselves in and then started playing the big shot.

 

Wright reached the landmark with a single off Sami. The innings included six hits to the fence two over it.

 

At the end of 13 overs, England were 99-2. Wright is on 54 along with Eoin Morgan who is on 8.

Afghanistan gets the much-needed breakthrough as Karim Sadiq's brilliance removes Alex Hales for 31.

 

Luke Wright played one straight to the bowler -- Karim gets a hand on the way back, catching Hales short of his crease.

 

England were 74-2 at the half way stage.

After losing Craig Kiewswetter in the first over, England have made a slow progess.

 

The bowling has been good from the Afghans but Shapoor Zadran in the third over gave four boundaries and a six to hand the momentum back to England.

 

The pitch is offering nice bounce and pace, although it will be interesting to see how the back up bowlers react to the situations.

 

England were 52-1 after 6 overs. Alex Hales is on 25, while Luke Wright is on 23.

Shapoor Zadran strikes in his first over as he castles Craig Kieswetter in the first over itself.

 

A nice carry in the first over as Kieswetter looked to dab one and take a single but ended up playing one back on to the stumps.

Afghanistan have won the toss and have elected to bowl first against England in Colombo.

 

Afghans had lost their first match to India and they need to win this match if they have to stay in the tournament.

18:39   Live! New Zealand thrash Bangladesh by 59 runs in Kandy
Scorecard:

Nasir Hossain is showing some intent. A boundary off Southee helps him reach his second half century in T20 internationals. 

However, the bowler hit backs two balls later, having Hossain (50) caught by Guptill at long on.

Oram has Mortaza (5) caught by Franklin at short third man. Sunny (5) hits straight to Oram in the final over to give Southee his third wicket for the match. 

Bangladesh manage to score only 132 for eight in their stipulated 20 overs to lose by a whopping 59 runs. 

This emphatic win all but assures the Black Cap a place in the Super Eights. 


18:11   Live! New Zealand close in on big win at Pallekelle

After Mills and Southee used the new ball to good effect, Daniel Vettori and Nathan McCullum are doing a good job with the old ball. 

The Bangladeshi middle order is finding it difficult to cut loose. However, against the run of play Mahmudullah smashes a six over long on in Vettori's third over.

Oram replaces Vettori (3-0-21-0) in the 14th over and Nasir Hossain greets him with a six followed by a four as 12 runs come off the over. 

The 50-run partnership for the fifth wicket is reached in the next over, bowled by McCullum. However, soon after Mahmudullah (15) hits the bowler straight to Williamson at long on.

Mills gets his third wicket when he has Mushfiqur (4) caught by Williamson at deep midwicket. 

Southee joins the party having Ashraful (21) out leg before.

Tim Southee to share the new ball. Five runs come off the over. 

Shakib gets a boundary in Mills' second over but being over ambitious costs him his wicket, Williamson taking a simple catch at cover point. 

It's Mills second wicket of the innings. Mushfiqur Rahim comes out to replace his captain.

17:17   Live! Mills provides New Zealand an early breakthrough

Tamim Iqbal and Mohammad Ashraful open the batting for Bangladesh and it will be Kyle Mills first up for New Zealand. 

Mills strikes with his third ball, having Iqbal caught by Guptill at cover even before Bangladesh had opened their account. 

Shakib Al Hasan, the captain, comes out to bat and starts with a fortunate boundary. Ashraful also helps himself to a boundary as Bangladesh reach nine for one after the opening over.
17:06   Live! McCullum's majestic 123 puts New Zealand on top

McCullum has decimated the Bangladesh attack in Pallekelle. 

The New Zealand batsman smashed 123 off just 55 balls before being caught by Tamim Iqbal at cover off the last ball of the innings, bowled by Razzak. 

McCullum's second T20 ton, the only batsman to do so international cricket, was inclusive of 11 boundaries and seven huge sixes. 

Thanks to his one-man show New Zealand piled up a mammoth 191 for three in their stipulated 2 overs. 

This match is a lost cause for Bangladesh.

McCullum and Franklin put on 94 runs, off just 71 balls, for the second wicket before Mortaza returns to have the latter caught by Elias Sunny at deep midwicket. 

Franklin's almost run-a-ball 35 was inclusive of two boundaries and a six. His captain, Ross Taylor, comes in to the crease. 

McCullum is dropped at extra cover when on 92. He goes on to complete his second T20 ton in the same Elias Sunny over.

New Zealand 175 for two after 19 overs.

McCullum and Franklin have done a great job for New Zealand. 

A boundary off Ziaur Rahman, his fifth of the innings, helps McCullum reach his 10th fifty in T20 internationals.

New Zealand also get past the 100-run mark with that shot, reaching 109 for one after 13 overs.

McCullum's six off Shakib, the second of the New Zealand innings, ahs helped them get past the 50-run mark in the eighth over. 

Mahmadullah is introduced into the attack in the ninth over, replacing Shafiul (2-0-19-0), and a till now subdued Franklin welcomes him with a boundary. His opening over costs Bangladesh 13 runs, with McCullum also helping himself to a boundary. 

The 50-run partnership for the second wicket is reached in the ninth over, courtesy a McCullum single.

Scorecard:

Brendon McCullum comes in to replace Guptill. He starts with a boundary each off Mortaza and Shafiul and a maximum off Shakib. 

However, New Zealand make slow progress, reaching 56 for one after eight overs. 

Save Shafiul, all the other Bangladesh bowlers have done a wonderful job in restricting their rivals.

Abdur Razzak replaces Shafiul (1-0-8-0) in the fourth over and strikes with his second ball, cleaning up Martin Guptill (11). 

Earlier, Bangladesh won the toss and put New Zealand in.

The decision seems to have gone in their favour.

Martin Guptill and James Franklin open the batting for New Zealand while Mashrafe Mortaza starts the proceedings for Bangladesh. 

Eight runs come off the first over. Shafiul Islam shares the new ball. Guptill slams the third ball over long on for a maximum. 

New Zealand 17 for no loss after three overs.
