IPL updates: Mumbai edge past Chennai by 9 runs

Munaf to bowl the last over with 12 needed from six balls. Dhoni heaves the first ball over midwicket where Pollard comes up with a brilliant catch under pressure. The ball looked to be heading over the fence till Pollard took it above his head with hands stretched high above him inches inside the ropes.

Dhoni walks back after a superb knock of 51 from 26 balls.

Chennai now need 12 from 5 balls.

Rajpoot swings at the second ball but misses. 12 from 4 balls.

He drives the next ball to the covers where Ponting misfields to give away two runs.

Rajpoot cannot get any run from the last three balls as Mumbai claim their first victory of the tournament.

Chennai finish on 139 for nine in their 20 overs to lose by nine runs.

Munaf made a good contribution with the ball, claiming three for 29 in four overs and took the big wicket of Dhoni in the last over.

Johnson to bowl the 19th over. The first ball is a wide and Dhoni lets it go for one extra run while he fails to get a run from the next ball as Johnson bowls a yorker.

Dhoni then despatches the fifth ball over midwicket for a six before he takes a single to end the over.

Dhoni has brought up his half-century from 25 balls, hitting five fours and three sixes.

Mumbai take a gamble by bringing on fifth Pollard against Dhoni. The Chennai is up to the task as he clobbers the first ball over long-off for a huge six that sails high into the stands.

The next ball is a slower bouncer which Dhoni helps round the corner beating the short fine leg fielder for a boundary.

Suddenly the equation is now 30 needed from 16 balls.

Pollard follows that up with a wide and then Dhoni drives the next delivery through the covers for a four followed by another wide. 16 runs from three balls from Pollard.

Dhoni takes a single before Pollard strikes with the wicket of Laughlin, who gets an inside edge back on to his stumps.

Ankit Rajpoot chips the last ball over Pollard but can't beat mid-off and Dhoni turns down the single.

Harbhajan will complete his spell, he went for 13 in his previous over. The dew seems to be making an effect as Harbhajan bowls another full toss which Dhoni carts over midwicket for a six. What a big blow!!

Dhoni then mishits the next ball towards midwicket and wants two but Ashwin slips while turning and his captain is not impressed.

Harbhajan then claims the wicket of Ashwin who charges down the wicket and hits one straight into the hands of Pollard to fall for two.

Munaf Patel comes back now. Jadeja smokes the first ball through the covers for a boundary but Munaf gets his revenge off the very next delivery.

Jadeja drags a wide delivery back on to his stumps to be bowled for 16.

R Ashwin has a close shave off as he is halfway down the pitch and is sent back by Dhoni but Ojha's wild throw from midwicket saves him.

Good over from Munaf as he gives just six runs despite a boundary from the first ball.

After a good first spell of two overs, Harbhajan comes back. The first ball is a dot before Jadeja launches it over long-on for a six. And then Dhoni smashes a full toss back over the bowler's head for a boundary as Chennai start to increase the tempo.

The runs are starting to flow now as Harbhajan goes for 13 runs in that over.

Three dot balls before Hussey (9) edges one and is dropped by Rohit Sharma at first slip. That was a regulation catch for a slip fielder but Rohit grassed the opportunity.

The right-hander shuffled across his stumps and tried to play it on the leg side but missed the ball and was bowled for five.

Hussey gets a reprieve as Rayudu fails to hold on to a tough diving chance at square leg.

Bravo to bowl the last over of the innings. Harbhajan plays the first ball down to long-on for one to hand the strike back to Pollard, who attempts the paddle sweep but misses.

He drives the next ball to long-off and wants to take the second run but Harbhajan was not interested. And Harbhajan slams the next ball over midwicket for a huge six before taking a single.

Pollard ends the innings in style carting a length ball over long-on for a six to help Mumbai finish on a healthy 148 for six in their 50 overs.

Pollard finishes unbeaten on a quickfire knock of 57 from 38 balls, having hit four fours and five sixes. Harbhajan played a good knock of 21 from as many balls as the duo put on 65 from eight overs to bail their team out of trouble.

The inexperienced Laughlin to bowl the crucial 19th over. He starts with two wides before Harbhajan slams it over the cover region for a boundary followed by a single.

Pollard then smashes it powerfully back past the bowler for a boundary finding the gap perfectly between the umpire and non-striker. That took no time to reach the fence.

The fifth ball is full and Pollard steers it to thirdman for one to bring up his half-century from 35 balls.

Harbhajan hits the last ball to deep midwicket for one to retain strike.

Ashwin will continue with Pollard looking to take charge. The first ball is a full toss which Pollard hits back to the bowler and he lets the second ball go through safely to Dhoni. The third ball is hit down to long-on and he refuses to run the single. And this is why as Pollard slams the fourth delivery over the cover region for his fourth six to take his score to 44.

Harbhajan hits the second ball to the covers for one before Bravo stops a powerful drive hit straight back at him by Pollard. Bravo attempts to throw the ball straight back at Pollard who is not happy with that gesture from his national team mate.

And two balls later Pollard casually lofts it over long-on for his third six.

Nannes comes back to bowl his fourth and final over. The first ball is a quick yorker which Pollard drives to long-off for one. Harbhajan inside edges yet again for a single to the fine leg region.

Just two more singles from the remaining four deliveries as Nannes finishes with superb figures of one for 18 in four overs.

Ashwin flights one and Harbhajan tries to slog it on the leg side but gets an inside edge for one. Pollard is being watchful against Ashwin as he taps him to the covers for one.

Harbhajan defends one on the leg side before he is beaten by the carrom ball that goes straight through. The last ball is again flighted as Harbhajan tries another big shot but gets an inside edge which goes close to his stumps. He is flirting with danger out there.

A superb over from Ashwin, giving away just two runs in that over.

Pollard (16) is dropped by Jadeja on his follow through as he fails to hold on to a tough low chance to his left. Two balls later Pollard sends one into the stands for a huge six to bring some relief to his team.

Dwayne Smith hits the third ball to the thirdman region for a couple to get off the mark. But he falls off the last ball of that over holing out to Bravo at long-on, who breaks into a jig after taking the catch.

Mumbai seem to be melting in the Chennai heat as wickets keep tumbling at a regular rate. The visitors are reeling at 83 for six after 12 overs.

Laughlin cripples Mumbai further with the wicket of Rayudu in his second over.

And Bravo gets another wicket in his next over, this time it is the big wicket of the in-form Karthik. Once again the incoming delivery did the trick as Karthik tried to play it across the line on the leg side but missed.

Mumbai in complete tatters at 59 for four in the ninth over.

Big West Indian Kieron Pollard will need to play a magical knock to rescue his team from this horror start.

Bravo tries a bouncer at his fellow West Indian first up but the right-hander is content to duck under it.

The next ball is a gift, short and wide outside the off-stump which Pollard punches through the off-side to get off the mark with a four. He gets another boundary off the next ball as he flicks a full delivery through midwicket.

Mumbai in big trouble at 41 for three in the seventh over, having lost their three most experienced batsmen.

New batsman Ambati Rayudu is off the mark with a single on the off-side. Karthik ends the over with a boundary as he steers a short wide ball past the point fielder.

The in-form Karthik is again shining with the bat as he races to 30 from 20 balls.

And Rajpoot will also bowl his third over. The second ball is a bit short and Karthik pulls it through midwicket for a much needed boundary.

Two balls later Karthik gets a lifeline as Suresh Raina drops a tough chance at covers. Karthik hit a short wide delivery through the covers but it went uppishly but Raina could not hold on.

The last ball was again short and Karthik went back and pulled it over midwicket for a six.

Nannes to bowl his third over as Chennai continue to look for wickets. And Nannes nearly picked up another wicket but Rajpoot drops an easy on the fine leg fence as Rohit top edged a pull shot.

Karthik gets three runs off the next delivery as Murali Vijay threw the stumps down from mid-off but it only ended in gifting Mumbai three overthrows.

Just five runs from the over as Mumbai look to repair the early damage.

Ricky Ponting takes first strike against Dirk Nannes and he gets off the mark from the second ball with two runs as Suresh Raina misfields at cover.

Mumbai are dealt a big blow in the very first over.

Sachin Tendulkar has fallen for a first ball duck as he is dismissed leg before wicket by left-arm pacer Dirk Nannes. Tendulkar is unhappy with the decision as the impact looked on the leg stump and the ball looked to be sliding down.

Dinesh Karthik taps it on the off-side for one to end the over.

Mumbai Indians captain Ricky Ponting has won the toss and elected to bat against Chennai Super Kings in Chennai, on Saturday.

Mumbai, who lost their first match to Bangalore, made two changes to their team. Dwayne Smith came in for Jacob Oram, while Pragyan Ojha replaced Jasprit Bhumra.

Chennai were missing Albie Morkel, who has not joined the team yet. Their four foreign players are Michael Hussey, Dwayne Bravo, Dirk Nannes and Ben Laughlin.

The young Cooper was the hero with the ball for Rajasthan, taking three for 30 in four overs. Sreesanth did the job with the new ball early on when he claimed one for 18 in four overs.

Warner's run out was the turning point as he fell for 77 from 56 balls and Delhi crumbled from that point onwards.

This is Delhi's second straight loss in the tournament.

Botha then tries the reverse sweep but misses and is trapped leg before wicket for two. 7 needed from 3 balls for victory.

New batsman Irfan Pathan can only get a single from the first ball he faced.

Russell goes outside the off-stump and tries to play the paddle sweep but misses and is bowled for seven. 6 needed from last ball.

Warner has played a mature innings to score 74 from 52 balls and most of the times has been content to bide his time out in the middle.

Warner then clips it on the leg side and Juneja calls him for a second as the youngster has to dive to make his ground. 18 from 14 balls.

With an inexperienced batting line-up to follow, Rajasthan will fancy their chances, and their only obstacle will be in the form of Warner.

Yadav then drops it short and Perera pulls it over through square leg for a boundary. The next ball is powerfully smashed through the covers for another boundary.

But Yadav has the last laugh. Perera is foxed by the slower delivery which he tries to loft over the off-side but ends up being caught at covers for 14.

Delhi Daredevils will be looking to improve upon their performance and register their first victory when they take on Rajasthan Royals in the fourth match of the Indian Premier League, in New Delhi, on Saturday.

Delhi went down by six wickets to Kolkata Knight Riders in their opening match.

Delhi will once again miss their dashing opener Virender Sehwag, who has still not recovered from his back injury.

Meanwhile, Rajasthan Royals will be without all-rounder Shane Watson. They feature a lot of experienced players in their team in the form of 40-year-old captain Rahul Dravid, 38-year-old batsman Brad Hodge, and 42-year-old spinner Brad Hogg among others.
