IPL updates: Pune thrash Rajasthan to register first win

The Australian's 53-ball knock was inclusive of six boundaries and three sixes and he has almost taken his team through.

Pune Warriors register their first win in this edition, with eight balls to spare.

Ross Taylor breaks free with a six over midwicket off Harmeet, the shot being the 100th six in this edition and helping raise the 100-run mark for the hosts.

However, Hodge takes a spectacular catch at the midwicket boundary to end Taylor's (17) innings.

However, the introduction of Siddharth Trivedi in the attack gives Finch the opportunity to cut loose again, the batsman picking up two boundaries in the over.

Uthappa gets his first six in the first ball of Sreesanth's second over. He gets a second in the over that costs Rajasthan 21 runs and helps raise the Pune 50 in just 3.4 overs. 

James Faulkner replaces an expensive Harmeet (2-0-23-0) but there's no respite as Finch smashes the third ball over cover.

However, a spectacular catch by Dravid at short midwicket ends Uthappa's (32) innings.

Finch hits the fourth ball to the square-leg fence.

However, the stand abruptly ends at 81 (off 67 balls) when Rahul Sharma has Rahane (30) caught by Mathews.

A single off Yuvraj helps Dravid complete his ninth IPL fifty. However, Yuvi has Stuart Binny (1) caught by Mitchell March at long-on.

Rajasthan Royals won the toss and opted to bat first in their Indian Premier League match against Pune Warriors India on Thursday.

"It's look a good wicket and it will be nice to have a few runs on the board," reasoned Rahul Dravid. 

Angelo Mathews, his Pune counterpart, didn't seem too perturbed. 

"It's good Rajasthan won the toss as we were looking to bowl. It looks like a two-faced wicket."

RCB WIN BY 8 WICKETS!!!

Bangalore 158-2 (17.3 overs) vs Kolkata 154-8

Balaji in his final over and he starts with a dot ball to Gayle, who smacks the next ball over midwicket for a six despite getting it from the toe end of the bat.

Balaji then tries the slower ball which goes astray on the off-side and is called a wide.

Gayle ends the match in his trademark fashion smashing it over mid-on for a huge six as Bangalore cruise to a convincing eight-wicket victory.

Gayle finishes on 85 from a mere 50 balls, having hit four boundaries and nine sixes in total, while de Villiers is on 22 from as many balls. The two put on an unbroken stand of 83 from 8.2 overs for the third wicket as RCB registered their third victory in four matches to go top of the IPL standings.

All-rounder Rajat Bhatia into the attack now. Gayle hits the first ball on the off-side for one before de Villiers slams the third ball straight down the ground for his first six.

10 runs from Bhatia's first over as RCB need just 10 runs in three overs for victory.

RCB need 38 from 30 balls as the runs seems to have dried up in the last few overs. But with Gayle out in the middle, the RCB team will feel quite comfortable.

Kallis starts his final over with two dot balls but Gayle makes up for it by carting the third ball over long-off for a six. The next ball is full and Gayle lofts it over mid-on for another six and to make it worse that is called a no-ball. So a free hit coming up for the dangerous Gayle!

Gayle tries to flick the full toss on the leg side but gets a thick outside edge which flies over point for a boundary.

18 runs from that over as RCB reach 135 for two in 16 overs.

Gayle has raced to 71 from 45 balls and de Villiers is on 15 from 18 balls with the duo putting on 63 runs in 6.4 overs for the third wicket so far.

Narine will complete his spell as KKR look to get a wicket or two and find a way back in the contest.

De Villiers is beaten off the first ball and he defends the next two balls before taking a single to long on.

Gayle shows his fellow West Indian some respect gently tapping it on the leg side and sprinting across for one.

The last ball is a beauty as it turns enough to beat de Villiers.

Just two runs from that over as Narine finishes with his spell giving away just 17 runs in four overs.

Kallis comes back for his second spell after a good first spell when he kept the runs down at the start of the innings. Gayle and de Villiers take a single each from the first two balls before Kallis bowls three dot balls.

Kallis then bowls a big wide outside the off-stump and Gayle slaps the last ball through point where the fielder half stops it but they end up taking two runs.

Another good over from Kallis, who has given away just 12 runs in three overs.

Narine comes back and he starts with the carrom ball that goes on straight and de Villiers can only edge it and it flies past the first slip fielder for a four.

Gayle takes a single from the fifth delivery to bring up his half-century from 32 balls, having hit three fours and five sixes.

Balaji is trying his best to keep a tab on the scoring. He foxes Gayle with a slower delivery before he takes a single to long-off. De Villiers smashes it through the off-side where Tiwary in the covers makes a spectacular diving effort but can't hold on. That was a tough chance and he did well to even get to the ball.

Gayle has had enough of playing the singles against Balaji whom he slogs for a huge six over midwicket, his fifth of the innings to take his score to 49 from 28 balls.

Sangwan will continue despite going for runs in his previous over. AB de Villiers tries to paddle the first delivery but misses. He connects the shot off the next ball but the fielder at short fine leg comes up with a good stop to save a certain boundary.

Sangwan tries a short ball at Gayle but the left-hander pulls it flat over midwicket for a maximum. The pacer then tries a slower bouncer which is way off the mark for a wide on the off-side.

De Villiers plays a cracking shot through the off-side for a boundary as KKR bowlers continue to leak runs.

Sangwan has been hit for 34 runs in his two overs.

Gayle has raced to 42 from 24 balls with three fours and four sixes.

Balaji delivers the crucial breakthrough for KKR as he gets the big wicket of Kohli. The slower ball does the trick as Kohli steps out but ends up chipping to Morgan at sweeper cover after scoring 35 from 27 balls.

But hold on...some words exchanged between Kohli and Gambhir out in the middle. Kohli has been state team mate and friends with Gambhir for a few years now but the two players charged at each other out in the middle and had to be separated. Kohli is still seething with anger as he walks back to the dugout.

AB de Villiers restores some calm to the proceedings with three dot balls before taking a single to thirdman. Gayle continues with his fireworks as he cuts it powerfully past point for a boundary.

Left-arm pacer Pradeep Sangwan comes to have a bowl. Gayle smashes the first ball through the covers for a boundary and then smashes it hard but it is stopped by the fielder at long-on for one.

Kohli then pulls a short ball over midwicket for a six and he repeats the dose off the next delivery but this time a bit fine to make it back to back sixes.

Sangwan then bowls a high full toss which Kohli hits to sweeper cover to one. Some relief for KKR as Gayle taps it gently to the fielder at point and the last ball is again a dot ball as it is hit back to the bowler.

19 runs from the over as RCB start to take charge.

Pacer Lakshmipathy Balaji replaces McLaren, who was hit for 22 runs in his previous over.

Kohli drives the first ball to long-on for one and Gayle hits it square on the off-side where the sweeper stops it to keep it down to one.

Balaji then beats Kohli with a slower off-cutter which goes on the bounce to the keeper.

The RCB captain plays the cover drive to perfection as he crashes the last ball for a boundary to keep the scoreboard moving at a good rate.

Narine will continue as KKR look to make a breakthrough. Just two singles from the first four balls before Kohli cuts a short ball behind point for a boundary and then takes the single to retain strike.

Kolkata have been able to build the pressure on RCB with some tight overs. McLaren starts with a wide down the leg side to Kohli who flicks the next ball through midwicket for a four.

Two balls later he lofts it over mid-on for the second four of the over.

Gayle is looking to change gears as he smokes it over mid-on and it goes all the way for a six, his 50th at this venue. He then steps down the track, makes room and slaps it over the off-side for another six.

22 runs from the McLaren over as RCB are suddenly in charge now as the score reaches 43 for one after six overs.

Gayle is on 24 from 14 balls and Kohli on 11 from 14 balls.

Mystery spinner Sunil Narine comes into the attack now. He starts with a flighted delivery to compatriot Chris Gayle who defends the first two balls before tapping the third to the covers for one.

Kohli tries to pull a short ball on the leg side but gets it off the bottom and it goes on the bounce to long-on for one.

Gayle tries to sweep the last ball but misses as Narine concedes just two runs in his first over.

RCB are 21 for one after five overs.

Kallis then bowls a maiden over to put some pressure on the Bangalore batsmen. The veteran pacer keeps it just outside the off-stump and Kallis fails to find the gaps off the six deliveries to play out the maiden.

McLaren has settled into a nice rhythm as he beats Agarwal with two successive outswingers before forcing the right-hander to edge the third delivery to be caught behind for six.

Virat Kohli runs the fifth ball down to thirdman for a single to get off the mark.

Gayle ends the over with a massive hit as he pulls a short ball over the leg side for a six.

Kallis to bowl the second over. Agarwal throws his bat at a wide delivery as it goes over the point region to get off the mark with a boundary. He steers the next delivery to thirdman for one and Gayle flicks it on the leg side for another single.

Agarwal defends the next ball before he tries to hit on the leg side but is beaten as Kallis and the keeper appeal for caught behind but the umpire rejects the appeal. Agarwal then turns it to fine leg to end the over with a single.

The dangerous Chris Gayle will open the batting for RCB along with Mayank Agarwal. South African pacer Ryan McLaren will bowl the first over for KKR.

The first ball is on target which Gayle defends on the off-side before letting the next go through to the keeper and then taps it to mid-off.

The fourth ball is short and Gayle pulls it through the leg side for a boundary. The left-hander then charges down the wicket and tries to loft it down the ground but is beaten as McLaren gets it to move away. The last ball also swings enough and again Gayle is beat as he looks to defends this time.

Kolkata were never able to get any sort of momentum in their innings and completely lost the plot in the last five overs, when they lost five wickets for 41 runs.

The RCB pacers dished out a good performance with RP Singh leading the way with three for 27, while Henriques and Vinay claimed two wickets each.

RP Singh starts the final over with a good yorker which Bhatia blocks for just a single. The second ball is also a yorker on the stumps which McLaren keeps out but they decide to take a single and RP Singh gets a direct hit at the non-striker's end to get a wicket.

Bhatia then shuffles across his stumps and tries to paddle it fine but misses and is bowled for 13 as KKR continue to lose wickets.

Sunil Narine turns the fourth ball on the leg side for a single to bring up the 150 for KKR.

Pradeep Sangwan tries to flick the fifth ball on the leg side but misses. He edges the last delivery which goes fine for a boundary as KKR finish on 154 for eight in their 20 overs.

Debutant KL Rahul comes up with a good save at deep midwicket to stop a certain boundary. Bhatia had hit a full toss on the leg side where Rahul caught it just inside the ropes but his momentum took him forward as the youngster showed great presence of mind to throw the ball in before he crossed the ropes to give away just two runs.

Bhatia then paddle the next ball fine for a four before pulling a short ball through square leg for back to back boundaries and give the innings the much needed lift.

He hits the fourth ball down the ground for one before Ryan McLaren turns the last ball on the leg side for another single.

Eoin Morgan chips RP Singh over the off-side for a couple but falls off the next delivery. Morgan tries to loft a low full toss on the leg side but fails to get enough distance and is caught at long-on for two.

Tiwary tries to heave a full delivery on the leg side but misses it before he hits one to Gayle at point and steals a single.

KKR are not getting the desired acceleration and the batsmen can only get singles and twos.

Another full toss gets RP Singh his second wicket of the over as Tiwary hits one to AB de Villiers at leg side after scoring 23 from 16 balls.

Two wickets for RP Singh in that over, while taking two wickets to cripple KRR innings. KKR have managed to get just 12 runs in the last two overs.

Tiwary hits the first ball from Vinay Kumar to thirdman for one. Gambhir looks to slog it over the leg side but gets a top edge and is caught by the bowler himself on the leg side.

Gambhir walks back after a good innings of 59 from 46 balls, having hit seven fours and a six.

Tiwary pulls the next ball which is a slower bouncer to short fine leg and runs for a quick single. RP Singh tries to hit the stumps at the batting end but misses and there is no back up to give away four extra runs.

KKR will looking to get atleast 50-60 runs in the last five overs and stretch their total beyond the 160-run mark.

Gambhir is beaten off the first ball by Unadkat as he tries to cut it but fails to connect and takes one from the next ball.

Tiwary then top edges one which goes high and fine on the leg side but a good stop from Mayank Agarwal running to his right from fine leg keeps it down to two.

With just four runs the first five balls, Gambhir pulls a short ball over square leg for a six. He is unhappy with the umpires and feels it was a no ball for height.

Tiwary is also looking to play some shots out in the middle. He is down the track to Murali and gently chips it over the covers but gets good timing as it runs away for a boundary.

Gambhir tries to play it late but gets an edge for just a single to thirdman followed by two more singles from the last two balls.

Tiwary comes down the track to Unadkat but ends up slicing it high towards thirdman where Vinay rushes in but is unable to stop it and also lets it through for a boundary.

Gambhir steers it fine of the thirdman fielder for a couple before a single helps him complete his half-century from 39 balls, his 17th in IPL.

Unadkat bowls a quick bouncer which Gambhir tries to pull on the leg side but misses.

KKR reserve wicketkeeper Brad Haddin says "it was a gut decision to promote Yusuf" and he is hoping that he fires with the bat today.

Henriques comes on to bowl his final over. Gambhir shuffles across his stumps and paddles it fine on the leg side for a boundary.

The Aussie all-rounder claims the wicket of Pathan in his final over, who tries to take on a slower ball but holes out to the fielder at long-on after scoring 27 from 17 balls.

New batsman Manoj Tiwary takes one on the off-side to get off the mark and retain strike.

Murali to bowl to Pathan. Will he take on the experienced spinner or just play him out? Pathan gets a leg bye from the first ball as he is hit on the pads and Gambhir gets another leg bye from the next ball as it hits the pads and goes fine on the leg side. Two more singles from the next ball before Pathan carefully defends the last two balls.

Vinay gets the important wicket of Kallis, who tries to play the inside out lofted shot over the off-side but is caught at sweeper cover for 16.

Kallis put on 51 runs from 7.1 overs for the second wicket to steady the innings after an early wicket.

The struggling Yusuf Pathan gets a promotion in the batting order. He starts off with a hat-trick of boundaries justifying his elevation as KKR look to attack the bowlers. He gets off the mark by smashing it down the ground followed by cutting a short ball past point before flicking the next delivery behind square on the leg side.

Gambhir then plays it fine on the leg side for a single and Kallis takes a quick single in the same region to bring up his 2000 runs in the IPL.

Gambhir pulls the last ball over midwicket but fails to time it well for a couple.

Gambhir is beaten as he again gives the charge and tries to play a big shot before he takes a single from the last ball.

Left-armer Jaidev Unadkat into the attack now in place of RP Singh, who went for 10 runs in his first over.

Kallis drives the first ball on the off-side but can't find the gap. He is beaten off the next ball as Unadkat foxes him with a slower ball.

He gives the charge off the third ball but again hits it to a fielder on the leg side. But Kohli tries to throw down the stumps from midwicket but misses and gifts Kallis four overthrows.

Unadkat beats Kallis again outside the off-stump as he gets one to move away enough. The veteran again tries to charge down the track and looks to play on the leg side but gets a leading edge for a single.

A good testing over from the young Unadkat to the experienced Kallis, beating him a few times.

Henriques continues to bowl tight as Jacques Kallis gets a single from the third ball to the fine leg region. Gambhir continues to play positively as he flicks it through midwicket for his third four to take his score to 15. He is beaten off the next ball outside the off-stump but gets the last ball to the left of the thirdman fielder for a couple.

Gambhir gives RP Singh the charge off the first ball but is forced to defend. He gets a lifeline off the next ball as he survives a run out change. He cuts the next ball but Kohli makes a good diving stop in the covers and Gambhir is already halfway down the track before being sent back but the wild throw from Kohli saves him.

Two balls later he gets it off the middle and in the gap on the off-side for the first boundary of the innings. Gambhir then gets an inside edge which goes past the stumps and beats the wicketkeeper for a couple.

Gambhir smashes the last ball over the cover fielder who barely has time to react for the second four of the over.

After that early wicket Gambhir is looking to counter attack and get some quick runs.

Bangalore take a gamble by getting all-rounder Moises Henriques to open the bowling. Manvinder Bisla taps the first ball on the off-side while the second is a wide down the leg side to get KKR off the mark.

Bisla is beaten as Henriques gets one to move away and then blocks the next on the off-side.

Bisla then drops it on the leg side and scampers across for a quick single as Gautam Gambhir collides with the bowler. The Kolkata captain is unhappy with Henriques coming in his way and clashing with him.

An angry Gambhr pulls the short ball from Henriques but it goes to deep square leg for one. And a few words exchanged between Gambhir and Henriques as the umpire intervenes and asks them to carry on playing.

Henriques then strikes in his first over as Bisla chops it to debutant Rahul at point to be dismissed for one.

A superb start from Henriques, giving away three runs while taking the wicket of Bisla.
