IPL updates: Rahane, Samson guide Royals to victory

A crucial 47-runs stand for the fifth wicket between Ajinkya Rahane, Sanju Samson helped Rajasthan Royals beat Kings XI Punjab by six wickets.

Requiring 5 runs off the final over off Piyush Chawla, Samson hit one over point fielder for a couple. He then smashed one through the covers for a boundary to give the victory. 

Praveen Kumar was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 2-10 off his 4 overs.

Praveen Kumar has struck a crucial blow as he had Rahul Dravid edging one to Adam Gilchrist, who took a one-handed diving catch. Dravid made 9. 

A good teasing delivery from the Indian veteran as he drew Dravid into the shot and got a healthy edge. 

Praveen made further dent into Royals as he had Stuart Binny walking back, without even troubling the scorers. 

Royals were 58-3 after 8 overs.

Rajasthan Royals are off to a good start in the chase with opener Shane Watson leading the way. 

After restricting Kings XI to 124, Watson took a special liking to Ryan Harris' bowling by smoking him for three consecutive boundaries. 

Then in the next over he smashed one straight past the bowler for fifth boundary of the innings.

However Watson couldn't continue for long as he perished looking to keep the momentum going for 19-ball 32. 

Watson looking to pull Parvinder Awana through midwicket ended up giving a simple catch to Mandeep Singh.  

At the end of 5 overs, Royals were 44-1.

Brilliant all-round bowling performance from Rajasthan Royals have ensured that Kings XI Punjab were bundled out for 124 in 18.5 overs.


Sreesanth started the slide with two wickets up front, then Siddharth Trivedi and Kevon Cooper put the lid on scoring for the visitors. 

David Hussey and Azar Mahamood tried their best to lift the tempo of scoring but didn't get any support from the other end.

Hussey looking to muscle one through the off side was fooled by a slower one and Dravid ensured that he held on to the catch off rebound.

Hussey then dabs one through covers for another single. Hussey and Gurkeerat are playing sensibly taking singles and couples. 

But just as we speak, Gurkeerat edges one to keeper Sanju Samson for 10. Gurkeerat looking to play one fine towards third man played too fine for his liking.

First up is a bowl down the leg side as Mandeep Singh gloves it for a couple. 

Sreesanth bowls another one down the legside for two wides.

Looked like Gilly checked his shot a bit but couldn't keep it down and was caught at mid-off.

Welcome to the live updates of the second match of the day between Kings XI Punjab and Rajasthan Royals in Jaipur. 

In the earlier match of the day, KKR steamrolled Sunrisers Hyderabad by 48 runs. 

The news from the middle here in Jaipur is Rajasthan have won the toss and have elected to bowl first on a firm wicket. 

Kings XI have never beaten Rajasthan Royals here in Jaipur and are going in with an unchanged side. 

Rajasthan Royals have made three changes to their side.

That was a top performance by the defending champions as they bounce back with a huge victory against Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Kallis was the star performer for Kolkata and made important contribution with both bat and ball. He scored a breezy 41 from 27 balls before bowling a brilliant spell of three for 13 in four overs.

Senanayake made an impressive debut, taking one for 18 in four overs and didn't concede even a single boundary with the ball.

This was Kolkata's second win in the tournament from four matches. Kolkata are fifth in the standings with four points from four games, while Hyderabad are third with six points from five matches.

Balaji beats Perera with the slower ball as the left-hander attempts a huge hit but misses. The next ball is again slower which Perera mistimes for a single on the leg side and Teja gets one from the next ball.

With the match slipping away from their grasp, Perera decides to attack Narine. He lofts the second ball over midwicket for a six. The left-hander then lifts one down the ground where Morgan withdraws at the last moment from taking the catch perhaps suggesting he lost it in the light to give away a four.

Perera then hits it through the covers for two runs followed by a single.

The pressure is paying off. Kumar Sangakkara tries to play a big shot down the ground off Bhatia but ends up being caught by Manoj Tiwary at long-off, who comes up with another excellent catch.

The dangerous Thisara Perera walks out to bat with the required rate in excess of 12 runs per over now.

Steyn to bowl his final over. He starts with a wide delivery before Morgan lofts it down the ground over long-off for a huge six followed by one.

Kallis then tries to play the big shot but gets a thick outside edge for a four. He tries another big shot but this time gets an inside edge which falls on the leg side as the two batsmen decide to steal a quick single. But Steyn is quick to get to the ball and runs out Morgan with a direct hit after a superb innings of 47 from 21 balls, hitting five fours and three sixes.

Perera replaces Mishra. Morgan hits the first ball, which is a bit slower, through point for two runs before he pulls the next one over midwicket and it bounces inside the ropes for a four.

However, he despatches the next ball, a low full toss, down the ground all the way for a huge six. Perera drops short again as he tries the slower ball and Morgan pulls it powerfully through the midwicket for a four. The England left-hander then cuts it over point for another boundary to make it 21 runs from five balls. He misses with the flick off the last ball to get one leg bye.

Perera has conceded 22 runs in that over as Sunrisers have conceded 48 runs in the last three overs.

Morgan has raced to 40 from 19 balls with the help of five fours and two sixes, while Kallis is on 29 from 20 balls.

Gambhir tries to pull the next delivery but fails to connect as it hits his body for a single on the off-side. Ishant then gets one to go straight beating Bisla outside the off-stump, who then comes down the track and lofts it over mid-on for a four. The last ball again beats Bisla outside the off-stump.

Kolkata are 31 for no loss after four overs. Gambhir is on 13 from 10 balls and Bisla on 16 from 14 balls.

The third ball goes straight on hitting Bisla on the pads who tries to play it across the line on the leg side. That struck the batsman right in front of middle stump but maybe it pitched just outside the leg stump.

Gambhir slaps the fourth delivery through the covers for two as a wild throw helps him get an extra run. He slog sweeps the next ball through midwicket for the third boundary of the over.

Dale Steyn is on the mark right from the start as Bisla defends the first ball before he is beaten off the second, which is clocked at 145kph as it moves away and beats the bat.

Bisla gets firmly behind the third ball and defends it on the off-side. The right-hander charges down the track off the fourth ball but gets a thick inside edge for a single.

Gambhir is off the mark from the first delivery as he steers it to thirdman for one and Bisla takes one from the last ball.

Kolkata have once again opted to keep out their premier pace bowler in Brett Lee, while wicketkeeper-batsman Brendon McCullum also fails to make the cut.

Gautam Gambhir will open the batting with the struggling Manvinder Bisla, who has struggled for runs in his tournament so far.

And bowling the first over for Hyderabad will be the world's best fast bowler in Dale Steyn.

Kolkata Knight Riders captain Gautam Gambhir has won the toss and elected to bat against Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League, at the Eden Gardens, in Kolkata, on Sunday.

Kolkata made a change to their team bringing in Sri Lankan mystery spinner Sachithra Senanayake in place of Ryan McLaren.

Hyderabad also made one change to their team with Karan Sharma replacing Anand Rajan.

Kolkata Knight Riders will be seeking to return to winning ways at home following two consecutive away defeats when they take on Sunrisers Hyderabad in the 17th match of the Pepsi Indian Premier League in Kolkata on Sunday.

Defending champions Kolkata began their campaign on a winning note against Delhi Daredevils but were beaten by Rajasthan Royals and Royal Challengers Bangalore in their next two matches.
