IPL updates: Mumbai edge past Punjab in a thriller

Punjab 158-9 (19 overs) vs Mumbai 174-3

Kulkarni to bowl the final over. The first ball is a high full toss which Praveen edges on the off-side and it beats Tendulkar at short thirdman for two runs. And it is also called a no-ball for height making it three runs from that delivery. 14 needed from six balls.

The next ball is hit to the covers and Praveen turns down the single. He is foxed by the slower bouncer from Kulkarni for another dot delivery.

Kulkarni tries another short ball but this time loses control and is called a wide outside the off-stump.

Praveen smashes the next ball down the ground and they scamper across for two runs as Kulkarni fails to collect the ball.

Kulkarni then bowls a high full toss which Praveen misses and he is unhappy that the umpire has not called it a no-ball. He rushes all the way to leg umpire Asad Rauf to query on his decision.

But he lofts the next ball over midwicket for a six to make it one needed from the last ball for victory.

Praveen lofts it on the leg side for a couple to deep midwicket. The next ball is a yorker outside the off-stump which beats Praveen and he is beaten again off the last ball as he tries to blast it through the off-side.

Praveen finally gets one off the middle as he blasts it over mid-off for a six. 18 needed from eight balls.

Praveen then shuffles across but flicks a low full toss to the fine leg region for a single.

Awana watchfully blocks the last ball of that over.

Punjab need 17 from the last over for victory.

Praveen Kumar on strike to Johnson. The first ball is hit to the fielder in the covers before he manages to chip the next over that fielder for a four before taking a single on the off-side.

Miller continues the fireworks as he lofts Johnson high into the stands at midwicket for another huge six, his fifth of the innings. 26 needed from 14 balls.

However, Johnson gets the wicket of Miller with the very next ball, who fails to despatch a low full toss and is caught in the covers by Tendulkar.

Miller is dismissed after a wonderful knock of 56 from 34 balls, with the help of one four and five sixes.

Mumbai are now just one wicket away from victory as Punjab's last pair battle it out in the middle.

Punjab need 26 runs from two overs for victory.

Dhawal Kulkarni comes back from the TATA end. Miller tries to slog the first ball over midwicket but gets an inside edge before hitting the next to long-off for one. Two more singles before Rayudu takes a superb catch at deep midwicket, comes charging in and dives forward, to send back Chawla for 12.

Miller ends the over with a huge six to bring up his fifty in some style, from just 32 balls.

Malinga comes back, to bowl his third over. Five runs from the first four balls before Piyush Chawla smashes it over the bowler's head for a six as Punjab continue to keep themselves in the hunt.

Harbhajan finishes with splendid figures of two for 14 in four overs. He conceded just a single in his final over.

Pollard is the sixth bowler to come into the attack. Miller is quick to seize the opportunity to cash in on the part-timer as he smacks it over midwicket for a six to take his score to 30 from 20 balls.

Three balls later Miller lofts it down the ground for the second six as Punjab threaten yet again with the bat.

15 runs from the over as Punjab 110 for five in 13 overs and now need 63 runs from 42 balls for victory.

Wickets continue to tumble for Punjab. Gurkeerat Singh tries to loft Harbhajan on the leg side but gets a leading edge and is caught by Smith in the covers for two.

Just three runs from the over as Punjab are 80 for five at the halfway stage, needing 95 runs from 10 overs for victory.

Miller plays the first ball from Ojha for two runs to deep midwicket before he hits one down the ground which goes over Johnson at long-off for a six.

Hussey then attempts the big shot but holes out to Johnson at long-on to be dismissed for a quickfire knock of 34 from 18 balls, hitting five fours and  a six.

Punjab in trouble at 77 for four in nine overs. They need 98 runs from 11 overs for victory.

Harbhajan Singh comes on from the TATA end as we have spinners from both ends.

Miller flicks the first ball on the leg side for two runs and then takes a single. Harbhajan keeps it tight giving away just seven runs in his first over.

Pragyan Ojha into the attack now and he gets a wicket with his very first delivery. Marsh tries to loft it down the ground and it looks to have carried over the ropes but Pollard comes up with a magical catch that has left everyone at Wankhede stunned. He times his leap to perfection to pluck the ball out of mid air and then manages to keep his balance centimetres inside the ropes to complete one of the best catches seen in the IPL.

Marsh walks back for 10 as Punjab lose a wicket at a crucial juncture.

Hussey crashes the first ball through the covers for a delightful boundary. The right-hander cuts the fourth delivery which is short and wide but Pollard makes a diving stop at point to save some runs for his team.

Lasith Malinga provides Mumbai with the early breakthrough. Mandeep Singh is done in by the slower delivery which is full and on the stumps as the right-hander plays all over it to be bowled for nine.

He was lucky earlier in the over when he edged an outswinger which went wide of the slip fielder.

Mitchell Johnson to bowl the first over. The Australian pacer starts with a wide delivery before he bowls a full toss to Mandeep which he hits through the covers for a four.

Shaun Marsh gets off the mark in IPL 6 with a single to the thirdman region as seven runs come from the first over.

Mumbai 174-3 (20 overs) vs Punjab

David Hussey takes a gamble by bringing himself to bowl the 20th over.

Rohit needs no second invitation as he lofts the first ball over long-on for a six. The third ball is a full toss and Rohit carts it high into the stands over midwicket for a huge six. This gamble has backfired already!

Hussey then tries to fire one but misses his line for a wide outside the off-stump.

Rohit continues his fireworks as he hoists the fourth delivery of the over right into the sightscreen for the third six of the over.

The last two balls are hit for boundaries over thirdman and through fine leg region as Mumbai finish on a huge 174 for three in their 20 overs.

Hussey was hit for 27 runs in that over and one wonders why he came on to bowl despite having two overs in hand from frontline spinner Chawla.

Rohit finishes unbeaten on a cracking innings of 79 from a mere 39 balls, while Pollard struggled for 20 from 21 balls.

Mumbai smashed their way to 72 runs from the last five overs to change the script completely.

Pollard is struggling to get the big hits going, having made just 14 from 18 balls, while Rohit is on 51 from 30 balls.

Kumar comes on to bowl his final over. Pollard gets into the act as he smashes a full delivery back at the bowler who somehow gets out of the way to give a boundary. But Mumbai get just four runs from the rest of the over as Hussey gets his field right with majority of the fielders on the leg side boundary.

Rohit then lofts a full delivery back over the bowler's head for a six to bring up his half-century in style, from 28 balls.

In the same over, Pollard is bowled by Gony off as he drags a full toss back on to his stumps. But as Pollard starts to make his way back, the umpires check on the no-ball and replays confirm that Gony had overstepped the line to give a free hit.

The free hit delivery is too short and high and is called a wide and the next delivery is again a free hit which Pollard hits down to long-off for one.

11 runs from the over despite the drama as Gony finishes with expensive figures of one for 43 in four overs.

The experienced Mahmood is back. Rohit tries to drive it through the off-side but gets an inside edge which misses the stumps and beats the keeper for a boundary.

Three balls later Rohit enjoys more luck as he pulls a short ball but gets a top edge which goes behind the wicket and carries all the way for a six.

Another productive over for Mumbai as Mahmood gives away 14 runs in that over.

Rohit decides to cut loose. He lofts a full delivery over the cover region for a boundary before pulling the next over midwicket for a six. Sharma then taps it on the leg side for one as 12 runs come from that over from Gony.

Awana is back into the attack, to bowl his fourth and final over. Rohit steers it to thirdman for one and Pollard gets one leg bye from the next as he tries to play it on the leg side but misses.

David Hussey brings himself into the attack now. Sharma takes one on the leg side while Pollard hits a full toss to deep midwicket for two runs.

Hussey then beats Pollard as he misses a full delivery which hits his pads but wicketkeeper Gurkeerat Singh misses the stumping with Pollard out of his crease.

Five runs from Hussey's first over as Mumbai reach 98 for three in 14 overs.

Change of ends for Chawla, who now comes on from the TATA end. Smith targets him straightaway slog sweeping the first ball over midwicket for a six.

But he falls off the next delivery attempting a similar shot but ends up spooning a high catch on the leg side to be caught by Miller at long-on.

Smith walks back after scoring 33 from 32 balls, hitting three fours and a six.

Kieron Pollard starts off in his trademark style as he lofts Chawla powerfully over long-on to start his innings with a six.

Gony comes back into the attack after just one over from Chawla. Smith pulls the first ball through square leg for a four and then lofts the next over the cover region for the same result as Mumbai finally look to step up the scoring rate.

Rohit then steers it past point as Chawla at sweeper cover misfields to give away the third boundary of the over.

15 runs from the over as Mumbai reach 80 for two in 12 overs.

Smith is on 27 from 30 balls, while Rohit is on 16 from 13 balls.

Leg-spinner Piyush Chawla into the attack now. Smith smashes the first ball straight back past the bowler for a boundary to bring some cheer to his camp. Before this boundary, he was on eight from 20 balls.

Chawla should have picked up a wicket in that over but Manan Vohra drops an easy catch at deep midwicket as Smith pulled a short ball straight to him. Smith's score was 13 at that point.

Rohit ends the over as he cuts the last ball between cover and point.

Manpreet Gony will bowl from the Garware Pavilion End now. Karthik is beaten off the first ball as he misses the pull off a short delivery which he defends the second ball.

But Gony gets his revenge from the next delivery as Karthik also drags it back on to his stumps to be bowled for 25 from 19 balls.

Mumbai get just three singles from the over as Smith continues to struggle to get going. He is on seven from 17 balls and Karthik on 21 from 15 balls as Mumbai reach 39 for one after seven overs.

Mumbai nearly lose a wicket in the sixth over courtesy of a misunderstanding between Karthik and Smith. David Miller from point misses the direct hit at the non-striker's end with Karthik way out of his crease after being sent back halfway into the run.

Miller then gives away five overthrows as he misses the direct hit, there was actually no need for the throw with the batsmen making their ground by then.

Karthik flicks the second ball from Kumar past the short fine leg fielder for a four. He lofts the next ball over that same region and this time it carries all the way for a six.

Karthik is on 13 from 10 balls while Smith is struggling on four from the same number of balls.

Another tidy over from Kumar and his figures now read one for five in two overs.

The first ball is an outswinger which Tendulkar lets go through to the keeper. However, he places the second ball in the gap between cover and point for the first boundary of the match. Two balls later he again finds the gap through the off-side for another four.

Dwayne Smith and Sachin Tendulkar walk out to open the batting at a packed Wankhede stadium. Praveen Kumar will bowl the first over.

Smith takes a quick single to the covers from the first ball. Tendulkar taps the next ball on the leg side and defends the third ball also.

He gets off the mark with another quick single to mid-on.

A tidy start from Kumar giving away just two runs.

Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma has won the toss and elected to bat against Kings XI Punjab.

The hosts, who beat Royal Challengers Bangalore in their last match, have opted to retain the same team.

Shaun Marsh replaces Adam Gilchrist at the top of the order, while pacers Parvinder Awana and Manpreet Gony come in for Bhargav Bhatt and Harmeet Singh.

Australian legends and captains of their franchies Ricky Ponting and Adam Gilchrist have dropped themselves from this match.

Rohit Sharma and David Hussey will lead Mumbai Indians and Kings XI Punjab respectively, in the 41st match of the Pepsi Indian Premier League, at the Wankhede stadium in Mumbai, on Monday.

Earlier in the day, Rajasthan Royals continued their unbeaten run at home as they beat Royal Challengers Bangalore by four wickets.

The bowler is unlucky first ball as Kohli does his Rajasthan counterpart a favour in the first slip. Dravid expresses his gratitude with a boundary over slips. The last ball is also hit to the fence, between point and cover.

What a day Faulkner is having on the field today. Watson has Rampaul (3) caught behind off his last ball to ens with impressive figures of three for 22. 

A couple by Vinay Kumar (22 not out off six balls) in the first ball off Faulkner's final over helps RCB get past the 150-run mark. He hits three sixes in the last four balls.

Watson returns to the attack in the 16th over, replacing Trivedi (3-0-20-1) and strikes with his fifth ball, having Kohli (32) caught by Faulkner at long-on. A crucial blow for RCB this. 

But Kohli looked out of character today, taking 35 balls for his 32. Sreesanth's (4-1-35-1) is an expensive one, 14 runs coming off it with Henriques helping himself to the fence twice.

The departure of Gayle has expectedly affected RCB. No boundaries for almost seven overs now. 

AB de Villiers ends the drought by smashing Chandila to the midwicket fence. Two balls later, Kohli gets his first boundary, coming down the track and smashing over the bowler's head.

Chandila's third over is an expensive one, 15 runs coming off it. De Villiers (on 15) is fortunate as Sreesanth misjudges a catch and the ball reaches the fence. Binny is the unfortunate bowler.

However, Sreesanth makes amends having De Villiers (21) caught by Faulkner at deep point in the next over. Moises Henriques comes out to join his captain.

Trivedi replaces Binny and a boundary over midwicket off the first ball by Virat helps RCB get past the 100-run mark.

RCB manage 55 runs in the powerplay (six overs). Siddharth Trivedi replaces Watson (2-0-11-1) in the attack in the eighth over. And he strikes with his final over rattling Mukund's (19) timber.

Rajasthan Royals won the toss and invited Royal Challengers Bangalore to bat first in their Indian Premier League match at Jaipur.
