India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni has won the toss and had no hesitation in electing to bat in the first Test against South Africa, in Johannesburg.

Veteran Zaheer Khan is back to bolster the Indian bowling attack, while Ajinkya Rahane gets a place in the middle order in place of Sachin Tendulkar, who retired last month.

Mohammed Shami and Ishant Sharma are included in the playing eleven ahead of Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Umesh Yadav.

R Ashwin is the only specialist spinner as India opt to play only four specialist bowlers.

India begin life without Sachin Tendulkar on Wednesday, taking on top ranked South Africa in the first of a two-Test series in their first contest since Sachin Tendulkar's retirement.

After nearly a quarter of a century of cricket, Tendulkar retired last month with more than 34000 international runs against his name to go with a slew of batting records.

The absence of international cricket's most prolific batsman, whose retirement last month provoked an emotional farewell in India, is just one of several concerns for captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni ahead of the series opener at the Wanderers in Johannesburg.
