Philander played a major role in India's recovery as he hit 48 from 76 balls, hitting five fours, while du Plessis was patient for 17 from 55 balls.

The two batsmen have been involved in an unbroken stand of 67 from 130 balls for the seventh wicket to rally the hosts.

Earlier, Graeme Smith struggled but made 68 as he put on 93 from 152 balls with Amla for the third wicket before India fought back with a flurry of wickets.

Ishant struggled with his landing and got two warnings from the umpire but came up with a fantastic spell, claiming three for 64 in 20 overs. Shami also bowled with good pace to claim two for 48 in 18 overs, while Zaheer made a good comeback to Test cricket with one for 72 in 22 overs.

Philander took four wickets with the ball before stroking a fluent 48 to keep South Africa in the hunt.

Shami bowls a quick bouncer to Philander who hooks it front of square for a boundary to move to 47, a very critical innings from the No. 8 batsman.

Philander takes a single from the last ball of the day to retain strike.

At stumps, South Africa have recovered to 213 for six in 66 overs, still trailing India by 67 runs.

South Africa have lost five wickets for 16 runs, the same as India in the morning session.

The hosts are in big trouble at 146 for six with Shami getting two wickets in that over.

He immediately switches to around the wicket.

The left-hander, who hit 11 fours in 119 deliveries, played all over a full delivery as he looked to flick it on the leg side and was hit right in front of the stumps.

SA lose three wickets in the space of nine deliveries to be reduced to 130 for four in the 40th over.

This is the 14th time that Zaheer has got the wicket of Smith across all formats.

Veteran Jacques Kallis falls off the very first delivery as he is trapped leg before wicket by Ishant for a duck.

Suddenly a spring in the step for Ishant, getting some nice carry and movement.

Tucker doesn't look too happy with where Ishant is landing his feet and he seems to be constantly having a chat with the pacer. Infact, he even signalled to captain Dhoni to have a chat with his bowler.

Smith, who was dropped by Ashwin on 19 off Zaheer, has struggled but ensured that he didn't throw his wicket away.

Zaheer bowled a good probing spell but has gone for runs -- 48 from 12 overs, while Ishant took one for 32 in 10 overs.

Shami has looked sharp for 29 runs in 11 overs and Ashwin bowled two overs for seven runs.

Amla plays out the last over with utmost caution as SA go to tea at 118 for one in 35 overs.

Smith has been scratchy but has made 62 from 107 balls, hitting 10 fours, while Amla has looked solid on 30 from 64 balls. The duo have put on 81 runs from 21.5 overs so far for the second wicket.

SA dominated the post lunch session, hitting 96 runs in 25 overs, while losing just one wicket.

The last ball beats him again as it passes close to the outside edge. Smith has a wide smile as he acknowledges that delivery while Shami cannot believe how it missed the edge.

Amla punches the second ball through the covers where Rahane comes up with a brilliant one-handed diving stop to save a certain boundary.

The third ball is a bouncer which Amla hooks and rolls his wrist to keep it down with a fielder at deep square leg and fine leg to get just a single.

Amla goes after a wide full delivery but gets an edge and it goes through the vacant gully region for a boundary.

That brings up the 50-run partnership for the second wicket between Amla and Smith.

That was a harsh call from umpire Tucker as Ishant barely touched the danger area of the pitch.

India's tactics against Amla are quite clear -- to pepper him with short deliveries regularly.

Shami comes back, replacing Ishant, who has taken the only wicket to have fallen so far.

He tempts Amla to dab his bat at one moving away and nearly finds edge as the ball passes close to the bat. That was a peach!

The last ball is again a bouncer and Amla ducks under it. India's pacers showing some intensity while bowling to Amla, trying to unsettle him with regular short deliveries.

New batsman Hashim Amla is greeted by a quick bouncer as the batsman is forced to duck under. A couple of full deliveries including another no-ball before the right-hander ducks under another quick short ball.

Zaheer bowled a probing spell of five overs for 12 runs and so did Shami in his four overs. India will need to take a few wickets after the lunch break else the batsmen will find it easy once the ball gets a bit old.

Veteran Zaheer Khan to bowl the first over and up against him will be South African captain Graeme Smith, whom he has scalped a few times.

The second ball is full and swings in, striking Smith on the pads, but the huge appeal for LBW is turned down. Replays indicate that the impact was outside the off-stump which perhaps saved the left-hander.

He gets off the mark from the fifth delivery with a single on the off-side.

Zaheer beats Alviro Petersen with a beautiful delivery which pitches on middle stump and moves across him. That was unplayable!

Ashwin flicks Morkel to deep square leg but he turns down the single with lastman Mohammed Shami at the other end. He gets a thick outside edge from the next delivery and again he does not want the single.

He tucks the fourth ball to deep square leg and this time they take one.

Shami dabs his bat at a wide outswinger without any footwork and he was lucky not to have edged it. Morkel then oversteps and it is called a no-ball.

He finishes off the Indian innings with the last ball, crashing through Shami's defences to bowl him for a duck.

India are bowled out for 280 in 103 in their first innings, losing their last five wickets for 16 runs in the space of 25 deliveries.

Having resumed the day on 255 for five, India folded up tamely following Dhoni's dismissal as they scored just 25 runs in 13 overs on the second day.

Philander made a sensational comeback, taking four for 61 in 27 overs with all his four wickets coming in the morning session of Day 2. Morkel was brilliant with the ball as he claimed three for 34 in 23 overs, while Kallis and Steyn picked a wicket each.

Ashwin looking in good touch. He drives the first ball from Philander through the covers for a couple and then gets the edge from the next for two more runs.

The right-hander steers the fourth delivery behind point for a single to give Ishant the last two deliveries of the over.

But Philander strikes with the last ball as Ishant is bowled for a duck. He is on a roll out there as he beats Ishant with an unplayable delivery which squares him before clipping the top of off-stump.

He takes a single from the fifth delivery as SA spread their field for the last two balls of the over.

One wicket leads to another...and this time Rahane is dismissed caught behind. Philander gets the outswinger to pitch perfectly as Rahane is drawn forward and the resultant nick is taken by de Villiers.

The youngster played a good innings of 47 from 137 balls but his dismissal has left India in trouble at 264 for seven.

Zaheer Khan lasts just one delivery. A full delivery which beats him and strikes right in front of the middle stump. That was the most plumb LBW appeal you will ever witness.

Philander on a hat-trick as India lose three wickets in the space of six deliveries.

Ishant Sharma edges the last ball but it goes on the bounce to the fielder at slip.

Dhoni showed a lot of patience during his 6th-wicket partnership of 45 runs from 23.3 overs with Rahane.

Philander to bowl the second over of the day. The second ball is a peach, pitching on the stumps and going away, forcing Rahane to play at it but it moves away to beat the edge. But he plays the next ball confidently coming forward to defend it on the off-side and does the same off the next ball.

There was some overnight rain in Johannesburg and it is still overcast at the stadium. The pace bowlers are expected to get some early help due to the moisture on the track caused by the rain.

Steyn starts off proceedings on Day 2. The first ball is sliding down the leg side as Rahane picks a leg bye.

Dhoni being very watchful as he plays with a straight bat to full deliveries from Steyn. The fourth ball stayed a bit low but Dhoni was quick to get his bat down and block it.

South Africa looking to bowl straight and more on the stumps unlike on Day 1 when the Indian batsmen left a lot of deliveries outside the off-stump.

India weathered the early storm to post 255 for five in 90 overs on the opening day after electing to bat, a decision which surprised quite a few at the start.

At stumps, Ajinkya Rahane showed great discipline to reach 43 from 105 balls, hitting seven fours, while captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni made 17 from 46 balls.

Virat Kohli shone with the bat on the opening day. The youngster played one of his best knocks in international cricket, scoring 119 from 181 balls, with the help of 18 fours. He showed great discipline to rally India after a couple of early wickets by leaving a lot of deliveries and waiting for the loose ball to score runs.
