So, finally the umpires have decided to call off play early for the opening day due to bad light.

India will be happy despite the day being curtailed as they finish on a strong 181 for one in 61 overs.

Vijay showed great application to score 91, while Pujara continued his good run to score a steady 58 as the duo put India on top after Dhawan's early dismissal.

Play will start early on Day 2, at 1300 IST to make up for the loss of 39 overs on the opening day.

Dhawan started his Test career with a sizzling record-breaking innings of 187 on debut but since then has got scores of 23, 33, 13, 15 and 29 in this match for a tally of 113 in his last five innings.

The last ball comes in and hits Pujara high on the pads as Morkel's appeal for LBW hardly excites the umpire.

Jacques Kallis leads the team out, in his final Test match to a huge cheer from the fans at the Kingsmead stadium.

Dale Steyn to bowl the first over and facing him will be Shikhar Dhawan. The left-hander defends the first ball before punching the second down the ground past mid-off for a boundary to get India off the mark in some style.

Shaun Pollock believes that the wicket looks a bit drier than normally and the spinners would come into play a lot more than usual. Rahul Dravid adds saying that he came in expecting a green wicket but saw a wicket looking similar to a sub-continental wicket.

Dhawan tucks the fourth ball off his hips on the leg side for a single.

It will be a big moment for all South African cricket fans as all-rounder Jacques Kallis will retire from Test and first-class cricket after this match.

Kallis, cricket's fourth highest Test run-getter, would be available, however, for selection in the limited-over formats, Cricket South Africa said in a statement.

"It's been an honour and a privilege to have been part of the South African Test team since making my debut 18 years ago," said the 38-year-old, who has amassed 13174 runs and taken 292 wickets from 165 Tests.

"I have enjoyed every moment out in the middle but I just feel that the time is right to hang up my Test whites," said the all-rounder who has also accumulated 11574 runs from 325 One-day internationals.

"It wasn't an easy decision to come to, especially with Australia around the corner and the success this team is enjoying, but I feel that I have made my contribution in this format."

South Africa will be looking to end their poor run in Durban after suffering four straight defeats at Kingsmead.

The Proteas are at a loss to explain their miserable run at one of the country's premier Test grounds, where they have not won since beating West Indies in 2008.

Australia, England, India and Sri Lanka have all enjoyed handsome triumphs in Durban over the world's top ranked Test team since then and vice-captain AB de Villiers cannot fathom the poor run.

India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni has won the toss and elected to bat against South Africa in the second Test, in Durban, on Thursday.

India made one change to their team with all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja replacing off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who failed to pick a single wicket in the first Test, which finished in a thrilling draw.

South Africa also made a change to their team with left-arm spinner Robin Peterson coming in for leg-spinner Imran Tahir.

Surprisingly, fast bowler Morne Morkel, who injured his ankle during the first Test made a quick recovery for this match.

The first Test ended in a thrilling draw as South Africa finished eight runs short after being set 458 for victory.
