Pakistan crush India by 85 runs to clinch ODI series

19:49  Rajneesh Gupta says: "This is India's worst ever defeat at Eden Gardens. Previous worst had also come vs Pakistan -- by 77 runs in Nehru Cup in 1989."

Ayaz Menon says: "Dhoni was let down badly by top order, but after 8 wickets were lost there was little point defending. No draws in ODIs."

Dhoni changes his bat now and smashes the first ball from Junaid down the ground for a four. What a start with the new willow!

Two balls later he crashes it through the covers for another boundary to move to 49. Junaid then bowls another high bouncer to Dhoni but the extra bounce carries it over for another wide.

Dhoni turns it round the corner on the leg side for a boundary to bring up his half-century from 88 balls and then takes a single.

Junaid then bowls an unplayable yorker which Ishant can't keep out and he is bowled for 2.

Dhoni finishes unbeaten on a painful innings of 54 from 89 balls, one of his worst innings in cricket.

Umar Gul comes into the attack now. Ishant defends the first ball as Dhoni walks up to him and gives him some advice. What could he be possibly saying? Did Dhoni tell him to bat out the 50 overs?

Gul bowls a wide delivery, a high bouncer over Ishant, to give India their first run after 11 deliveries, in the 45th over.

Ishant then drives a full delivery through the covers for two runs as India reach 142 for nine after 45 overs.

Dhoni has kept blocking since the time he has arrived at the crease and the task is beyond even him now.

Finally, the Indian captain wakes up from his slumber as he lofts Irfan over the cover region for a boundary, the first after a long, long wait of nearly 17 overs.

He plays a few dot balls before a single from the fifth ball as lastman Ishant Sharma is beaten off the final ball of that over.

Two balls later Ajmal gets another wicket as Ashok Dinda falls leg before wicket to the quicker delivery.

Even the crowd have given up and some have even made their way out of the stadium.

Dhoni has a close shave as he is beaten by one that went straight and Akmal whipped the bails but Dhoni's feet was back in the crease on time.

This has been one of India's worst performances with the bat at home. They don't have a clue as to how to get the runs against the Pakistan spinners.

India have scored just seven runs from the last five overs as they seem to be surrendering the match and the series with it too.

Part-timer Shoaib Malik into the attack now. And he starts with a wicket in his first over as Ashwin is stumped for a painful knock of three from 22 balls.

Raina gives Hafeez the charge and gently chips it on the off-side as it goes on the bounce to mid-off for one. Three more singles before Raina is beaten in the flight and wicketkeeper Akmal comes up with a sharp stumping to leave India in further trouble.

Raina is stumped for a struggling innings of 18 from 41 balls to leave India in further trouble at 95 for five after 26 overs.

Pakistan's premier spinner Saeed Ajmal comes into the attack with his team firmly in control. Dhoni blocks the first ball before turning the next to midwicket for one.

Raina defends the third ball with a straight back as the crowd start getting restless and start shouting as Raina defends another delivery. He then gets a run as Misbah misfields at mid-off before Dhoni blocks the last ball.

At the halfway stage, India are 91 for four, needing 160 runs in 25 overs for victory.

Raina defends the first ball from Hafeez before he glides the next delivery fine on the leg side for a boundary, the first after a long wait of 75 deliveries.

Irfan comes back into the attack now as Pakistan look to claim another wicket and keep India on the backfoot.

Gul has bowled a really magnificent spell so far, two for 10 in four overs.

Raina turns the second ball towards midwicket for one before Dhoni turns it fine on the leg side for one to get off the mark. Gul then attempts a bouncer at Raina but it goes way too high over the batsman and even the keeper for five wides.

Raina then flicks the last ball through midwicket for a couple as India reach 80 for four in 21 overs.

India lost four wickets for 28 runs in the space of 54 deliveries as Pakistan have gained the upperhand in this match.

Hafeez continues as still no sign of Ajmal coming into the attack. Raina defends the first three balls before he takes a single to the point region.

Dhoni also plays out the last two balls as just a single comes from that over.

India are 71 for four in 20 overs, needing 180 from 30 overs for victory at exactly six runs per over.

Gul has left India in tatters with the wicket of Yuvraj, who is caught behind by keeper Akmal for nine.

The left-hander tried to pull the short delivery but it hit the toe end of the bat and was gleefully accepted by Kamran Akmal behind the stumps.

India in a complete mess here at 70 for four in 19 overs. Captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni will need to play another gem with support from the middle order.

Raina attempts a quick single as he taps the ball on the leg side and runs but Gul is quick to get to the ball and attempts a direct hit at the bowler's end which misses the stumps else Raina would have been gone by a long way.

Yuvraj turns the fourth ball on the leg side for one while Raina ducks under a bouncer next ball. The last ball is also short but Raina pulls it on the leg side for one.

Part-timer Mohammad Hafeez into the attack now ahead of regular spinner Saeed Ajmal.

Yuvraj drives the first ball to sweeper cover for one. Raina defends the next three balls with the full face of the bat. He drives the fifth delivery to the fielder at cover before chipping down the track and hitting it back to the bowler.

The over finished in nearly 2 minutes with India getting just one single from it.

Sehwag plays the first ball of Gul's second over to the off-side for one and Yuvraj gets one from the next ball.

Sehwag then chips it uppishly on the leg side as it falls short of the fielder at mid-on who tries to come in and take it.

But Gul gets his man from the very next delivery, trapping Sehwag leg before wicket with a full incoming delivery.

Sehwag is dismissed for 31 from 43 balls to leave India in trouble.

Junaid will also continue as he comes on to bowl his sixth over. He tries to bowl a bouncer at Sehwag who ducks under it but it is down the leg side and called a wide.

Sehwag flicks the third ball to deep square leg for a single while Kohli defends the next delivery.

Kohli falls off the final delivery as he is caught down the leg side off a short delivery as Kamran Akmal completes a good diving catch diving to his left.

Junaid has bowled a superb first spell, claiming two for 18 in six overs.

Pakistan continue with Irfan, who comes on to bowl his 6th over. Sehwag taps the first ball on the off-side as Hafeez swoops in from point. He misses the direct hit which would have caught Kohli short but at the same time he gifts India four more overthrows.

Kohli flicks the third ball through midwicket for two runs before he is beaten by the next ball as it bounces extra and angles right across him.

The right-hander then steers the next ball past point for a boundary to take India past the 50-run mark.
17:00  Gambhir fails again, India lose 1st wicket:   - Scorecard

India 42-1 (10 overs) vs Pak 250

Gambhir drives the first ball from Junaid towards mid-on for one and Sehwag takes one three balls later to the cover region.

Junaid then delivers the first wicket for Pakistan as Gambhir drags one back to his stumps. The left-hander throws his bat at a wide delivery but gets a thick inside edge that comes back to his stumps to bowl him for another struggling innings of 11 from 25 balls.

Pakistan's pacers are now peppering India's openers with short balls directed at their body. A quick bouncer to Sehwag which he tries to fend as it hits the handle and goes to thirdman region for one.

Gambhir is then beaten outside the off-stump as he plays his customary loose drive outside the off-stump without any real footwork.

Gambhir then ducks under a short ball as the Indian batsmen decide not to take on the short balls. They are looking to play out the two left-armers.

After nine overs, India have reached 40 for no loss.

Junaid strikes Sehwag on the pads with an incoming delivery but Indian umpire Vineet Kulkarni turns down the LBW appeal. Sehwag takes a single from the second ball and Gambhir does the same from the next delivery.

Sehwag inside edges the second ball for a quick single and Gambhir glides it down to fine leg for one. Sehwag is looking very edgy out in the middle as another inside edge gets him a single from the last ball.

So it has been a thrilling start so far in the Indian innings. While Pakistan's pacers have bowled a few wonderful deliveries, going past the edge of the bat a few times, India's openers have hit a few cracking boundaries.

Irfan bowls a quick bouncer to Gambhir who ducks under it and drives the next ball to the fielder at covers. Irfan then bowls a wide down the leg side before Gambhir defends it on the pitch and Sehwag calls him for a quick single.

Irfan tries another bouncer at Sehwag but it slides down the leg side for another wide.

Sehwag then misses a full stump outside the off-stump as Irfan switches to round the wicket. The next ball is short and on Sehwag's rib cage area who fends it awkwardly on the leg side.

The last ball is again a full toss as Sehwag drives it straight to the cover fielder who misfields to give away a single.

India 31-0 (6 overs) vs Pak 250

Junaid beats Sehwag with another wonderful delivery that moves away and bounces a bit extra. Sehwag then decides to change tactics as he takes a couple of steps down the wicket and punches it through the covers for a boundary.

Junaid adjusts his line and length and once again Sehwag has no answers to it as the ball whizzes past the outside edge but he solidly defends the next ball off the backfoot.

India are 31 for no loss after six overs. Sehwag has hit his way to 18 from 21 balls, with the help of three fours, and Gambhir on seven from 15 balls.

India 27-0 (5 overs) vs Pak 250

Gambhir is on the backfoot as he tries to defend a short ball and the inside edge rolls on the leg side for one. Sehwag taps it to mid-off fielder before he cuts a short ball behind point for his second boundary. He gets a thick outside edge to point off the next ball where Hafeez fumbles to give a single and his horror throw gives India extra four runs courtesy of overthrows.

10 runs from that over as India reach 27 for no loss after five overs.

Junaid bowling at a good speed and getting the ball to move too. The first ball is close to the off-stump as Gambhir lets it go and it passes very close to the stumps. The second ball is short and wide and Gambhir cuts it past point for a boundary.

Gambhir is then beaten all ends up by a peach of a delivery from Junaid as the ball comes in but leaves the left-hander after pitching and goes past the edge of the bat.

Gambhir plays the next ball on the leg side for one as Sehwag defends the remaining two balls.

Sehwag defends the first ball from Irfan's second over on the off-side and does the same from the next ball. However, he is quick to rock on the backfoot and smashes the third ball through the covers for a cracking boundary!

Sehwag can't get any more runs from the last three balls as India reach 12 for no loss after three overs.

Junaid Khan to bowl the second over. Sehwag is hit on the pads first ball as Junaid appeals for LBW but the ball is clearly sliding down the leg side. Sehwag defends the next two balls before the pacer bowls a wide down the leg side which keeper Akmal dives and stops as India get a wide and a bye.

Gambhir is beaten off the final delivery as the ball slants away from him.

16:17  India chase 251 for victory in 2nd ODI:  - Scorecard

India 6-0 (1 over) vs Pak 250

India's openers Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir will be up against the Pakistan's talented pace duo of Mohammad Irfan and Junaid Khan.

Gambhir taps the first ball on the off-side and takes a quick single. Sehwag then tried to play the cut shot to a ball that was close to the stumps and he nearly ended up dragging it back on to his stumps. That went very close to the sticks as they take a single.

Irfan then slides one short down the leg side which Gambhir turns round the corner for four leg byes.

There is a misunderstanding between the two Indian openers off the final delivery but Gambhir is sent back in time as six runs come from the first over.
16:07  India should start as the favourites in the run chase against Pakistan. The last time they batted second at Eden Gardens, they comfortably chased down a target in excess of 300, says Rajneesh Gupta.

"Last time India batted 2nd at Eden Gardens, they chased down Sri Lanka's total of 315 with 7 wickets & 11 balls to spare!" he writes on Twitter.

Pakistan lost their last four wickets for 14 runs in the space of 15 deliveries.

Ishant was easily the best bowler for India, claiming three for 34 in 9.3 overs, while Jadeja took three for 41 in 10 overs.

Pakistan were sitting pretty on 140 for no loss after 23 overs courtesy of their openers Jamshed (106) and Hafeez (76).

But the visitors collapsed in the middle overs and Hafeez's wicket triggered the collapse as wickets kept tumbling at regular intervals.

Shoaib Malik was the only batsman to cross the 20-run mark as he made 24 but the rest of the batsmen failed to make an impact with the bat.

Dhoni's captaincy deserves some praise for his timely bowling changes especially in the middle overs, never letting the Pakistani batsmen settle down.

Kumar then foxes Ajmal completely with the slower bouncer. The next ball is a quick bouncer which Ajmal looks to pull but is caught by Sehwag at square leg for seven.

Pakistan continue to slip as they reach 250 for eight after 48 overs.

Jadeja back into the attack now. Jamshed charges down the wicket off the first delivery but he is beaten in the flight as Dhoni completes the stumping after initially missing it and recovering in time to break down the stumps.

Jamshed walks back after a fine innings of 106 from 124 balls, having 12 fours and two sixes.

New batsman Kamran Akmal is beaten off the first delivery as Jadeja gets one to grip and turn.

Akmal then tries to drive a wide delivery but gets an edge which is caught by Sehwag at first slip after a few juggles.

Two wickets in three balls as Pakistan are reduced to 210 for six.

Umar Gul defends the last three balls of the over as Jadeja bowls a maiden double wicket over. His figures now read three for 33 in nine overs.

Kumar comes back now as Dhoni continues to juggle his fast bowlers. Pakistan get singles from the first three balls before Malik cuts it late and gets it fine on the off-side. Malik came charging down to call his partner for two but was sent back and he was lucky that the throw from thirdman was weak to give him time to get back to his crease.

Just five runs from that over as Pakistan reach 210 for four in 41 overs.

Ashwin continues as Jamshed hits the first two balls straight to fielders. He chips the third ball over mid-off for a boundary to bring up his century in some style from 120 balls. This is his third century in a row against India in four innings to continue his golden run with the bat.

Jamshed's fifty came from 55 balls but the next fifty took 65 balls as Pakistan lost a few quick wickets in the middle overs.

Pakistan are 205 for four in 40 overs and will look to reach atleast 275 with some big hits in the last ten overs.

Dinda comes back in place of Ishant, who bowled just one over in his last spell. Jamshed lofts the second ball straight back over the bowler's head for a six to break the shackles. That was the first boundary for Pakistan after a gap of nearly 10 overs.

That six also takes Jamshed's score to 96 from 113 balls before he whips the fourth ball to deep midwicket for two runs to inch closer to his century.

He turns the last ball to the fine leg region for one to take his score to 99 at the end of that over.

Raina is back into the attack. He bowled only one over before this when he was hit for 10 runs before being taken off.

Infact, replays show that the batsman had got a thick inside edge on to his pads. How could the umpire miss such a big edge....shocking decision!

Local boy Ashok Dinda to bowl the second over ahead of the experienced Ishant Sharma. He starts with a quick delivery 141kmph which Jamshed plays cautiously to the leg side while letting the next two deliveries go through to the keeper as Dinda pitches it outside the off-stump and moves it away.

Jamshed then turns it to the leg side to pick up a couple before Dinda bowls a high bouncer which is called a wide.

The young Bhuvneshwar Kumar will bowl the first over and up against him will be two Pakistan openers Nasir Jamshed and Mohammad Hafeez at an overcast Eden Gardens stadium.

The first ball is pitched up which Jamshed defends on the leg side before driving the next ball down to mid-off as there is a slight misunderstanding between the two batsmen but no run.

Jamshed then clips it to the fine leg region for a single to get his team off the mark.

Hafeez plays his first ball confidently to mid-on offering the full face of the bat. He gets a thick outside edge off the next delivery which goes past R Ashwin at second slip for a boundary before the last ball of the over is defended on the leg side.

12:01  Ajinkya Rahane is the unlucky man yet again as Ravindra Jadeja replaces the out of form Rohit Sharma. He didn't get a single Test match despite being in the squad for all the four matches against England before he got a chance in the T20 games. Rahane has been in excellent form in domestic cricket but the team management don't seem to trust him enough yet.

Following Sachin Tendulkar's retirement from ODIs, Rahane was touted as his replacement in the limited overs format but India decided to go in with an all-rounder for this match and Rahane was benched yet again!
