CT Updates: New Zealand scamper to 1 wkt win over SL

New Zealand finally managed to cross the finishing line courtesy off a wide and a leg-bye as Kiwis beat Sri Lanka by one wicket.

Requiring four runs for the victory, New Zealand tailenders Tim Southee and Mitchell McClenaghan played sensibly by collecting singles off Dilshan. 

There was much-needed drama as McClenaghan ran for a couple off a wide ball to give them crucial two points.

Malinga was the star for Sri Lanka with figures of 4-33, but the total was too less for Islanders to defend.

Lasith Malinga's lethal yourkers have turned the game in Sri Lanka's favour. Mailinga has picked up 4-33 with one more over to go. 

If that was not enough, Thissara Perera hit the stumps at the strikers end, to keep the nerve-wracking alive. 

New Zealand need five runs, while Sri Lanka are just one wicket away from a fantastic victory. 

At the end of 35 overs, New Zealand were 134-9.

Lasith Malinga has struck once again as he removes New Zealand skipper Brendon McCullum -- done in by another slower one from the Sri Lankan pacer. 

A slowish yorker from Malinga had McCullum playing the shot too early as the ball crashed on to off stump for 18. 

Momentum just keeps swinging here in Cardiff as New Zealand were 115-7, still requiring 23 runs. 

Nathan McCullum is on 28 and he is joined in by Tim Southee.

McCullum brothers have put New Zealand on the front foot with a crucial partnership in the middle. 

New Zealand were struggling in the run chase, before Nathan and Brendon forged a good partnership to revive hopes again. 

Nathan McCullum the aggressor as he released the pressure a bit with two boundaries off Shaminda Eranga.

At the end of 29 overs New Zealand were 111-6. Kiwis still require 28 runs from 126 balls. 

Nathan is on 26, while Brendon is on 16.

Lasith Malinga strikes once again for Sri Lanka as he removes Daniel Vettori for 5.

Vettori was done in by another slower one from the Lankan speedster as hit the pads on the full.

Replays show that Vettori had got an inside edge, but no reviews available for New Zealand hurting them badly now. 

At the end of 22 overs New Zealand were 85-6. McCullum brothers are in the middle now. Brendon is on 12, while Nathan is on 4.

Tillakaratne Dilshan now being introduced. The Sri Lankans have kept it tight and making New Zealand batsmen earn each and every single. 


First up is a quicker one from Dilshan  as Franklin lets it go. 

Couple of defensive shots ensure that no run are scored off the over. 

But Dilshan strikes a crucial blow as he had Franklin walking back after being adjudged leg-before-wicket for six. 

What a turn around as New Zealand were 70-5 after 15 overs.

Rangana Hearth now strikes for Sri Lanka removing Ross Taylor for a duck. 

Hearth had Taylor playing down the wrong line -- umpire is quick to raise the finger in bowler's favour. 

Shaminda Eranga, then had Martin Guptil walking back -- courtesy of a brilliant catch by Mahelja Jayawardene in slips. 

Guptil was on his way back for 25. Two new batsmen at the crease now as New Zealand were 49-4 after 10.1 overs.

Lasith Malinga strikes for Sri Lanka, removing Kane Williamson for 16.

Williamson was deceived by a fantastic slower delivery, which dipped on the batsman as umpire is quick to raise the finger in bowler's favour.

Williamson goes for the review, hoping for decision to go in his favour. But replays show that the ball would have crashed onto middle stump.

New Zealand 48-2 after 9 overs.

Going into the official break, New Zealand were 26-1 after 6 overs. 

Sri Lankan bowlers have kept things tight with Eranga getting the lone wicket of Luke Ronchi for 7.

Martin Guptil in the middle on 12, along with Kane Williamson, who is on 6.

New Zealand still require 113 runs from 44 overs. 

Earlier, New Zealand bowlers bundled Sri Lanka out for 138.

Shaminda Eranga strikes early for Sri Lanka, removing Luke Ronchi for 7. 

Ronchi, who was done in by the extra bounce, edged one to Sangakkara behind the stumps.

Kane Williamson, who came in at the fall of Ronchi, got off the mark immediately with a tap towards mid-on for a single. 

At the end of four overs, New Zealand were 15-1. Kiwis still require 124 runs from 46 overs.

A fantastic four-for from Mitchell McClenaghan have ensured that Sri Lankans are bundled out for 138 in 37.5 overs. 

Malinga the last man dismissed as the closed the face of the bat too early and was comfortably caught in the slips by Ross Taylor. 

None of the Lankan batsmen got going except for Kumar Sangakkara, who top-scored with 68.

Besides McClenaghan, Nathan McCullum and Kyle Mills took 2 wickets apiece.   

The Kiwis will now come out after a 10 minute break and bat before the official interval.

Nathan McCullum ends Kumar Sangakkara stay in the middle after the Sri Lankan top edged one to Kane Williamson for 68.

After taking the batting powerplay, Sanga chipped down the track, looking to hit one out of the park, was beaten by turn and bounce in the pitch.

Shaminda Eranga too didn't last long as he gifted his wicket away by chipping one straight down Mills' throat for a duck. 

At the end of 37 overs, Sri Lanka were 135-9.

The script continues to go awry for Sri Lanka as Thissara Perera is now waking the long walk back after hitting one straight to Daniel Vewttori at mid-on.

Perera looking to hoick McClenaghan out of park, only got a top edge to leave former world champions in further trouble.

Sangakkara is standing tall amongst the ruins, but is failing to get any support. 

At the end of 34 overs, Sri Lanka were 122-7.

Kumar Sangakkara is the only man fighting it out for Sri Lanka with 70-ball 50. While the wickets were tumbling around him, Sanga took his time in the middle. 

Sanga exploded in 27th over, smashing part-time offspinner Kane Williamson for three consecutive boundaries. 

Sangakkara reached the landmark with a single off Nathan McCullum. 

At the end of 29 overs, Sri Lanka were 99-6. Sangakkara is on 50, while Thissara Perera is on 4.

Mitchell McClenaghan strikes back in his second spell as he had Sri Lankan skipper walking back to the pavillion for 9. 

Mathews, who looked to clip one through leg side, exposed his leg stump as the ball crashed onto it to provide the breakthrough for New Zealand.

New Zealand bowlers have kept it tight to Sri Lankan batsmen, who are looking to rebuild the innings. 

Sangakkara and skipper Angelo Mathews are dealing in singles and the last five overs have just produced 17 runs. 

Both batsmen are quite happy to consume lot of dot balls, getting the odd singles as the fielders too ensured that there are no easy singles on offer. 

At the end of 18 overs, SL were 58-4. Sanga is on 26, while Mathews is on 5.

Mills who has been relentless with his line and length had the young Sri Lankan going for a drive off good length, only to get an edge.

Kiws introduce spin now as Daniel Vettori comes in now.

Jayawardene takes a huge stride looking to hit it through covers, but gets an inside edge -- goes to fine leg for a couple. 

Vettori pushed the next one -- no run. 

Vettori is able to extract some bounce and spin from the pitch -- Lankan spinners would be itching to bowl here. 

As we speak, Vettori strikes for New Zealand as he had Mahela Jayawardene walking back after having him leg-before wicket for 4.

Jayawardene fails to read the arm ball from Vettori and was caught in front of the stumps to leave Sri Lanka reeling at 33-3 after 8 overs.

Sangakkara is on 7 and is joined by Dinesh Chandimal.

Tillakaratne Dilshan and Sangakkara have huge task on hand to steady Sri Lankan innings after losing Kushal Perera off the first ball.


But as we speak Mitchell McClenaghan strikes a deadly blow. The left-armer had Dilshan playing down the wrong line as the ball hit the top of middle stump. 


Dilshan made 20 with three hits to the fence. Sri Lanka were 29-2 after 6 overs.

Sri Lankan openers Kushal Perera and Tillakaratne Dilshan walk out in the middle as Kyle Mills will open the proceedings for Kiwis. 

Mills running hard after 5 minutes of delay, thanks to the sight screen and he strikes!!!!

Perera is on his way back to the pavilion courtesy of a brilliant catch from Brendon McCullum in second slips.

Mills bowled a back of a length delivery -- moving across the lefthander as Perera had poke at it, catching the outside edge -- McCullum did the rest. 

Kumar Sangakkara is in the middle much earlier than he would have liked as he helps himself with a single off the third ball off the over.

Dilshan too wastes little time and gets off the mark with a push towards midwicket. 

At the end of first over Sri Lanka were 2-1.

Welcome to the live update of the match between Sri Lanka and New Zealand on a sunny Cardiff ground. 

The news from the middle is that Sri Lanka skipper Angelo Mathews have won the toss and elected to bat first. 

Mathews reckons the wicket will remain true throughout the match and will look to get maximum. 

Team news is Lankans have rested Nuwan Kulasekara, bringing in Shaminda Eranga. 

The Kiwis meanwhile, have included experienced Daniel Vettori
