CT Updates: Sangakkara keeps Sri Lanka in the game

Stuart Broad no comeback for his second spell as Jayawardene welcomes him with a big six over his head -- much needed one for Mahela. 


Jayawardene then collects single to give strike back to Sangakkara. 

Sangakkara clips one off his pads for a single. 

Couple of dots to follow as Sri Lanka stil require 157 runs from 22 overs. Sangakkara is on 70, while Jayawardene is on 12.

Graeme Swann continues as Sanga chips down the track and drives down for a single -- 100 up for Sri Lanka.


Dilshan looks to be aggressive against Swann, chips down the track and lofts it over the bowler head, but ends up giving a simple catch to Joe Root at long-on.

Dilshan made 46, with three boundaries and one six.

Sangakkara meanwhile, comepleted a well-deserved half-century with a single down to long-on.

England bowlers have been on the mark by not letting Tillakaratne Dilshan break free. 

Dilshan has been struggling to hit the boundary boards and it is adding pressure on Kumar Sangakkara as well. 

But as we speak, Dilshan sweeps for a boundary, courtesy off a midfield.

Next up, Dilshan chips down the track and smokes it over the bowlers head for a maximum. 

Sanga too got into the act as he chips one over the bowlers head for a boundary. 

Single to round off the over as 17 runs came from that over. 

Dilshan now moves up to 37, while Sanga is on 43 as the duo have added 80 runs for second wicket.

Tim Bresnan introduced into the attack now as Kumar Sangakkara welcomes him with a boundary through covers.  


Sangakka repeats the stroke, this time Ian Bell is able to retrieve it before the ball hits the boundary ropes -- 3 runs nonetheless.


Bresnan checks his length -- ensuring that only a single is available since that boundary.

Sanga is on 28, while Dilshan is on 12

Jimmy Anderson strikes early for England as he removed left-handed Kushal Perera for 6.

Perera looking to loft the ball over mid-on's head hit it straight to Ravi Bopara.

Kumar Sangakkara is looking good in the middle with a delightful boundary off Anderson. 

Tillakaratne Dilshan meanwhile, is finding his way around, but looks like he is willing to take time to stay in the middle

England 293-7 (50 overs) vs SL

A late fightback from Sri Lanka means that England have finished with 293-7 in their stipulated 50 overs.


England were going great guns when Joe Root and Jonathan Trott were batting, but after Root was dismissed, Sri Lanka put the breaks on scoring. 

Trott made a 87-ball 76 with five hits to the fence, while Root made a brilliant 68 off 55 balls.

Bopara's late strikes ensured that England finish with a competitive score. Bopara plundered 28 runs from the final over as he made 33 off just 13 balls. 

Earlier skipper Alastair Cook chipped win with a vital half-century to give England solid base.

For Sri Lanka Herath, Malinga and Eranga picked up two wickets apiece.

Sri Lanka finally manages to get the wicket of Joe Root, after dropping him four times in the knock of 68.

Root was deceived by a slower one from as he top-edged one to Mahela Jayawardene in deep midwicket. 

Malinga then had Morgan walking back -- trapped LBW -- off the very next ball. Replays showed that the ball would have missed the off-stump, but England had already used up their reviews.

A brilliant 43-ball half-century from Joe Root has put England on top with eight overs to go.

Root reached the landmark with a single through legside off Rangana Herath.

However, Sri Lanka had some moment to cheer as Herath traps Jonathan Trott in front of the stumps for 76.

Malinga to bowl the final over of the batting powerplay. 

First up Malinga deceives Joe Root with a slower one as the slices one in the air -- but Dilshan drops a difficult catch at point -- a couple to Root. 

Root then collects a single with a late cut past point. 

Trott then hits one behind square for a single. 

Root brings up England's 200 with a single towards third man. Last five overs have yielded 41 runs.

Angelo Mathews into the attack as Joe Root rocks on back foot and pulls one through square leg for a couple -- a midfield helped his cause as well.

Meanwhile Trott completes his 21st half-century with a single towards long-on. Root plays one late -- wide of point fielder for another single.

A single to end the over. as Root is on 20, while Trott is on 50.

Rangana Herath provided the much-needed breakthrough for Sri Lanka as he removes England skipper Alastair Cook for 59.

Cook looking to sweep Herath missed the line of the ball and was adjudged leg-before-wicket. 

Cook-Trott partnership was looking ominous for Sri Lanka that added 81 for first wicket. 

Trott is on 42, and is joined in the middle by Joe Root, who is on 2.

Alastair Cook brought up his 16th half-century as England build up a solid base for the latter part of the innings.

Cook reached the landmark with a clip off his pads off Dilshan.

The Trott-Cook duo have added 67 runs for the first wicket.

Rangan Herath to continue as Trott collects a single with a dab towards long on. 

Cook then workd off his pads for a single. Another punch towards long on gives another single. 

Cook sweeps towards square leg, to bring up England 100. 

Cook is going strong on 41, while Trott is on 28.

Jonathan Trott and Alastair Cook have combined well for England. Trott is up and running with singles and twos, ensuring that there are not too many quiet overs. 


Cook, meanwhile, looks like have dropped the anchor for a long innings. The England skipper picks up a couple with a drive past mid-on. Cook follows it up with a single.


Trott rounds up the over with a single to keep the strike. Cook is on 27, while Trott is on 16.

Shaminda Eranga provides the much-needed breakthrough for Sri Lanka as he removes Ian Bell for 20. 

Bell looked to clip one off his pads, hit one straight to square leg to Kushal Perera. 

Johnathan Trott who comes in place of Bell now. 

Trott gets off the mark immediately with a dab towards third man -- 50 up for England. Cook keeps the strike rotating with a single through covers. 

Eranga ends the successful over with a bouncer.

Shaminda Eranga now introduced into the attack now. Sri Lankan new ball bowlers have not been able to provide the early strike.  

First up is a full and wide delivery from Eranga as Cook is quite happy to let it go to the wicket-keeper.

Eranga then pitches one closer to the stump as Cool guides it past gully for a single.


Bell latches on to a wide delivery from the Sri Lankan pacer and dispatches it over cover for another boundary. 

At the end of 10 overs, England were 38-0. Bell is on 18, while Cook is on 11.

Lasith Malinga to bowl now as Bell jumps on the backfoot and punches it past point for his first boundary.

Bell then pulls one for the second boundary off the over through midwicket. 

Trademark slower delivery from Malinga as Bell clips one through square leg for a single. 

Maling finishes off with a peach of a delivery -- full pitched up, inviting Cook for a drive. 

At the end of 4 overs England were 19-0. Cook is on 5, while Bell is on 10.

First up is a slider across the left-hander Cook -- no runs. 

Cook gets bat on ball but hits it straight to covers. 

Kulasekara pitches one up to the bat as Cook drives past point for the first boundary.

Welcome to the updates of the crucial Group A match between Sri Lanka and England here at the Oval. 

Sri Lanka need to win this desperately to stay in the competition, while a win for England would seal their semis sport.

The news from the middle is that the Angelo Mathews have won the toss and have elected to bowl first on a windy and cold day. 

Both teams have one change apiece. Sri Lanka are going in with experienced Nuwan Kulasekara, in place of Thissara Perera. 

England have included Graeme Swann and out goes James Tredwell.
