Ishant Sharma comes into the attack after just one over from Jadeja. Bell gets a leg bye from the first ball before Root cuts a wide delivery for two runs and then pulls a short ball for two more runs.

He steers the fourth ball to thirdman for a single and Bell does the same but they rush across for two runs. Bell is beaten off the last ball as he tries to slog it across the line.

Off-spinner R Ashwin comes in from the other end. He starts from round the wicket as Trott looks to sweep the first ball but misses and the LBW appeal is turned down.

But Ashwin gets his man off the very next delivery. The next ball turns as Trott again plays the walking shot but misses the ball and Dhoni completes a good stumping down the leg side.

Trott walks back after a quick knock of 20 from 17 balls.

Joe Root gets off the mark with a single to fine leg. And Bell nearly hits it straight into the hands of the fielder at leg slip as he tries to turn it fine. He drives the next ball to long-on for one.

An excellent start from Ashwin -- three runs and the wicket of Trott.

India introduce spin early by getting in left-armer Ravindra Jadeja to bowl the fifth over. Trott drives the first ball to sweeper cover for one and Bell taps it to point for a single.

Jadeja gets one to turn and bounce as Trott is beaten all ends up and he nearly ends up chipping the next ball to midwicket. Trott drives the fifth ball to the fielder in the covers before getting one from the last ball.

A good start from Jadeja, giving away just three runs in his first over.

Trott flicks Yadav to short fine leg for a single and Bell gets a thick outside edge to thirdman for one.

Trott chips Yadav on the leg side for two runs before he is beaten by the bouncer from the Indian pacer. The next ball is hit on the off-side for one and Bell flicks the last ball on the leg side for a couple.

England have recovered to 24 for one after four overs. Trott has raced to 18 from 11 balls and Bell is on four from as many balls.

Trott punches Kumar in the gap between cover and point for a couple. Trott seems in a rush as he chips down the track and flicks a full delivery through midwicket for his first boundary to race to nine from three balls.

Following that shot, Dhoni has come up to the wickets to Kumar. Trott defends the next two balls on the off-side. The fifth ball is short and wide which Trott sends crashing through the covers for the second boundary of the over.

He takes a single from the last ball to retain strike as England get 11 runs from that over.

Cook (2) tries to run it down to thirdman but gets an edge as Ashwin comes up with a superb catch falling down to his right at first slip.

New batsman Jonathan Trott flicks the last ball through midwicket for three runs.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar to bowl the first over as England persist with their normal opening duo of Alastair Cook and Ian Bell.

Cook defends the first two balls before he steers it to thirdman for one and Bell gets off the mark with a single on the leg side.

Kumar slides down the leg side as Cook flicks it to the fine leg region for a single before Bell plays a dot ball.

Bresnan bowls a short ball to Ashwin, who pulls it on the leg side for one. Jadeja chips the next ball over the bowler's head and he calls Ashwin for a second but he is well short of his crease courtesy of a direct hit.

Jadeja and new batsman Bhuvneshwar Kumar take a single each before the left-hander flicks it over midwicket for a six.

He pulls the last ball over midwicket for two runs to finish on 33 from 25 balls, having hit two fours and two sixes.

12 runs from the final over from Bresnan as India finish on 129 for seven in their 20 overs.

Jadeja continues the recovery as he lofts Anderson over the covers for a six. He chips the next ball back over the bowler's head but Cook at long-off prefers to stay back and stop the ball on the bounce instead of going for the catch.

Kohli perishes off the next delivery as he holes out to Bopara on the off-side to walk back after a good innings of 43 from 34 balls, having hit four boundaries and a six.

Jadeja makes room but Anderson follows him with the short ball at his body which goes through to the keeper. However, he gets a bit of width from the next ball which he cuts over short thirdman for a boundary. He tries the shot again off the next ball but is beaten.

Kohli gets a thick outside edge as he tries to loft it over the off-side but Jonathan Trott drops a high catch at short thirdman. Kohli gets a single to take his score to 37.

Jadeja takes a single from the fifth ball before Kohli lofts it over the leg side for a huge six.

Bresnan bowls a wide down the leg side before Kohli lofts it through the gap at midwicket for a boundary. He is beaten by the slower ball as he tries another heave across the line on the leg side.

The next ball is short as Kohli pulls it behind square and rushes back for the second run. He gives Bresnan the charge and tries to hit over the top but is beaten.

Bresnan tries the slower bouncer which goes high over the batsman and is called a wide. The last ball is a full toss which Kohli steers past for a couple to get 11 runs from the over.

Kohli releases some pressure as he crashes a wide half-volley from Bopara through the covers for a boundary. Bopara tries the slower ball but Kohli slog sweeps the third ball for another boundary to take his score to 26.

Jadeja gives Bopara the charge and steers him past point for two runs and takes a single from the last ball to get 12 runs from that over.

England's fifth bowler Bopara finishes with wonderful figures of three for 20 in four overs.

Anderson is back into the attack. Kohli defends the first ball before he takes a single as England continue to build the pressure.

New batsman Ravindra Jadeja hits the third ball to mid-on and then pulls a short ball to the same fielder.

He throws his bat at the next ball but again in vain as he is beaten outside the off-stump. The last ball is again a dot ball as Anderson concedes just a single in that over.

Raina ends his struggling innings with a poor shot, chipping it straight into the hands of Cook at mid-on. That is the second wicket for Bopara, who continues his good performance in the tournament.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni is beaten off the first ball as it comes in sharply. He tries to take a quick single from the next ball but is sent back by Kohli and rightly so.

Dhoni tries to play the uppercut but ends up chipping it straight to Tredwell at thirdman to fall for a four-ball duck.

A double wicket maiden for Bopara, whose figures so far read three for eight in three overs.

Karthik tries to slog sweep Tredwell but gets a top edge and is caught by Morgan to walk back after scoring just six.

Kohli taps it to short thirdman as Suresh Raina comes across for a quick single. New batsman Suresh Raina starts off with three dot deliveries before chipping it over the bowler's head to long-off for a single.

An excellent over by Tredwell, conceding just two runs while getting the wicket of Karthik.

Bopara comes on to bowl his second over. Three singles from the first three balls before it starts to drizzle again as it gets very dark at Edgbaston.

Kohli drives the fourth ball down to long-on for another single. tTe fifth ball is wide which Karthik drives to the fielder at point while flicking the last ball to the leg side for one.

Another tidy over from Bopara, whose figures now read one for eight in two overs.

Karthik rocks back and cuts Tredwell past point only for a single as Kohli turns down the second run. Kohli drives the third ball to sweeper cover for only a single to take his score to 10.

Karthik taps it to short fine leg for another single. Kohli jumps down the track and wristly lofts it over midwicket for a much-needed boundary.

At the halfway stage, India are 59 for two.

Part-timer Ravi Bopara comes into the attack and the Indian batsmen will surely look to target him.

Kohli takes a quiet single from the first ball. But Dhawan falls off the next ball as he is foxed by the slower ball and holes out to the fielder in the covers. The left-hander walks back after a good innings of 31 from 24 balls, having hit two fours and a six.

India persist with their regular batting order as Dinesh Karthik walks in to bat at No. 4. He plays three dot balls before taking a single from the last ball of that over.

So England introduce spin in the form of off-spinner James Tredwell. Kohli hits the first ball down to long-on for one. Dhawan is beaten by one that gripped and turned. He sweeps the next ball but it goes to the fielder at square leg.

Dhawan slog sweeps the next ball powerfully for a boundary through square leg to break the shackles. He reverse sweeps the next ball and the Indian batsmen get only two runs as Bresnan makes a good stop but the third umpire rules it a four.

Nine runs from Tredwell's first over as India reach 49 for one after eight overs.

Dhawan gives Bresnan the charge but the bowler bangs it short which the batsman plays and misses. The next ball is away from the off-stump and is rightly called a wide by the umpire.

He takes a single to the leg side and another overthrow gives India another extra run. Not good backing up by the England fielders.

And again, we are coming off because of rain. This is turning out to be very frustrating for everyone, especially for the crowd.

It is a bit heavier now as the hovercraft comes on to the centre with the adjoining areas also covered now. This could hold on for a bit.

Meanwhile, the ICC has added another 75 minutes to try and ensure that the game is completed anyhow, which means play can extend to 2030 hours local time which is 0100 IST.

The umpires conducted an inspection at 1720 hours local time (2150 IST) and decided that play will resume at 1740 hours. But there is a huge black cloud round the corner threatening another heavy shower.

So that leaves us with 20 minutes of rain time which means another heavy spell of rain and the match could be called off!

The players are back out in the middle as play resumes after another brief break.

Bresnan continues as Dhawan slaps the third ball of the over through covers for a single. Kohli is beaten by a good delivery from Bresnan as the ball hold it's line and passes the outside edge of the bat. He takes a single from the last ball to retain strike.

Broad will continue as he comes on to bowl his third over. Kohli defends the first ball watchfully with a straight bat before he flicks it square for two runs. He takes a single from the fourth ball before rain interrupts play.

But it turns out to be a brief rain break as the covers come off soon after they are brought out into the middle.

So just a couple of minutes lost to the rain before Broad is back to resume his over.

Dhawan starts in smashing fashion after the break as he cuts a short wide delivery over thirdman for a six. He was in the air when he played that shot and got the maximum from it before taking a single to end the over.

Dhawan has raced to 20 from 15 balls as India reach 35 for one after six overs.

Anderson is off after bowling two overs for 12 runs and is replaced by Tim Bresnan. The first ball is short and wide which Dhawan cuts past point for two runs. The left-hander hits the next ball to mid-on before he is beaten by the outswinger as the ball slants across him.

He then gets an inside edge to the leg side fore one before Kohli flicks the fifth ball to deep square leg for two runs.

He mistimes the last ball on the leg side and Dhawan is off for another quick single despite an unfair push from Bresnan, who is unable to get to the ball.

Dhawan makes room and steers Broad to thirdman for one and Rohit does the same off the next ball. Dhawan taps it to point and the two young openers steal another quick single. Brilliant running between the wickets from the duo.

Rohit defends the fourth ball with a straight bat back to the bowler. He falls off the next delivery as Broad gets the ball to go through the huge gap between the bat and pad to bowl him for nine.

Virat Kohli defends the last ball as Broad concedes just three runs while picking up a wicket.

Cook takes out the second slip and is made to regret his decision immediately. Anderson bowls a full wide outswinger which Rohit tries to drive but gets an edge which flies through the vacant second slip region for a boundary. He is beaten off the next ball as he plays and misses outside the off-stump before he takes one to mid-off.

Dhawan flicks the last ball to deep midwicket for a single but Tim Bresnan's throw from the deep goes for four overthrows. Wicketkeeper Jos Buttler failed to collect a high throw and managed to deflect it away from the fielder backing it up.

That last ball salvaged the over for India, who get 10 runs to move to 16 for no loss after three overs.

India's openers -- Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan -- walk out to the middle to a huge cheer from the crowd who have been waiting patiently for the last six-seven hours.

Jimmy Anderson will bowl the first over and facing him will be Rohit.

The first ball is full which Rohit defends cautiously on the off-side. He taps the second on the leg side and takes a quick single to get off the mark.

Dhawan hits the next two balls on the off-side to the point fielder before he steers it uppishly past second slip for a single.

Rohit defends the last ball as just two runs come from the first over.

The toss happened nearly six hours ago which was won by England captain Alastair Cook, who had no hesitation in electing to bowl in overcast conditions.

After a frustrating wait over the last few years with frequent spells of rain, the match is finally set to start at 2050 IST with 20 overs per side. There will be a four over Mandatory Powerplay, a two over Batting Powerplay and each bowler can bowl a maximum of four overs.

Just when it looked that the match would start all hopes were dashed by another spell of rain. The covers are back again before the rain relents and the umpires have now decided that it will be a T20 match will play scheduled to start at 1620 local time which is 2050 IST provided there is no more rain.

So, the hardwork of the ground at Edgbaston has finally paid off!!

The ICC Champions Trophy final will begin at 1545 hours local time which is 2015 IST provided there is no further rain.

The match will 24 overs per side.

So the sun has finally come out at Edgbaston to a huge cheer from the crowd, who have been waiting patiently for the last few hours.

The umpires will carry out an inspection at 3pm local time which is 1930 IST to decide when play would start.

Despite the ground being covered a lot of water has spilled on to the outfield which means it will take an hour or so to get the ground if the rain stops. The super soppers have been kept very busy through the day as the groundstaff try their best to get the ground ready at the earliest.

It continues to rain at Birmingham and every passing minute is reducing the chances of the match taking place. The cut-off time for a 20-over game is 4:18 pm (8:48 pm IST) otherwise the trophy will be shared.

The official word from ICC is that lunch will be taken at 12.30pm local time and an inspection will follow when conditions permit.

Meanwhile, we have the latest update from Birmingham where it has stopped raining and the groundstaff have started their work on getting the field ready for play.

"4:00 PM IST: The rain has stopped for now and the groundsmen are working," BCCI (@BCCI) writes on Twitter.

Guardian's Mike Selvey (@selvecricket) says England may not get reverse swing with the outfield soaking in a lot of water because of rain

"Rain looks like it has stopped and mopping up going on. Damp outfield won't help chances of reverse swing," he writes on Twitter.

Former England fast bowler Derek Pringle (@derekpringle) on Twitter says the rain has returned again and the ground is covered with forecast not encouraging for the rest of the day. The two teams come out for the national anthems before rain played spoilsport forcing everyone everyone back into the dressing room to delay the start of the all-important final.

The forecast is not encouraging either with rain predicted through the day. A minimum of 20 overs each is needed to constitute a game or else it will be a washout and the trophy will be shared.

It rained yesterday and through the night but for now the rain has relented which means the match could start on time but it is still overcast and we could have a few rain stoppages during the day.

England captain Alastair Cook has won the toss and elected to bowl against India in the final of the ICC Champions Trophy in Birmingham, on Sunday.

England made one change to their team with Tim Bresnan coming in for Steve Finn, while India retained the same squad that beat Sri Lanka in the semi-final.
