STUMPS - DAY 2

India 266-8 (68.1) vs Aus 262

Nathan Lyon struck with the last ball of the second day to leave India struggling at 266 for eight in their first innings.

Lyon also completed his five-wicket haul to lead Australia's superb fightback with the ball after they were dismissed for 262 in the morning session.

Lyon registered wonderful figures of five for 94 in 22.1 overs to keep his team in the hunt.

India got off to a good start as the openers put on 108 runs for the first wicket with both Cheteshwar Pujara and Murali Vijay hitting half-centuries but the middle order failed to come good.

India also paid the price for tinkering with their batting order as Pujara opened the innings, while Virat Kohli was promoted to No. 3, while debutant Ajinkya Rahane slotted in at No. 5.

Ravindra Jadeja made a good contribution with the bat, hitting 43 from 49 balls.

India 256-7 (65) vs Aus 262

Glenn Maxwell comes into the attack in the 64th over of the innings replacing Lyon, who bowled a long first spell of 22 overs, claiming four for 94 to lead Australia's fightback.

Maxwell was off the field for most part of the day with a stomach bug but when he was called on to bowl, he struck in his first over.

Maxwell got Ravindra Jadeja leg before wicket for 43 after the left-hander had hit six fours in his 49-ball knock.

The left-hander offered no shot to one pitched outside the off-stump and was hit on the pads but the umpire ruled in the favour of the bowler. Jadeja might count himself unlucky to be given out and walks back in disappointment.

India are 256 for seven in 64 overs, trailing Australia by just six runs now.

India 243-6 (60) vs Aus 262

Johnson comes back and he is operating from round the wicket. He tries a few short deliveries as Ashwin and Jadeja play the pull for singles.

Lyon gets one through Ashwin's defences beating him comprehensively but it goes over the stumps as Wade misses to give away four byes. In the same over, Ashwin reverse sweeps Lyon for a boundary through the off-side.

Jadeja playing quite sensibly. He is taking no chances against the pace bowlers and is showing lot of caution with the amount of uneven bounce on offer. But he is targetting spinner Lyon, whom he lofts twice down the ground for back to back fours and take his score to 35 from 39 balls with the help of five fours.

16:12
India 220-6 (56) vs Aus 262

Jadeja is looking in good touch. He hits one through point where the fielder makes a good stop to keep it down to two. He mistimes the pull shot off the next ball as it hits low on the bat and falls on the leg side. Pattinson has a huge appeal for caught behind off the last ball of that over but the umpire turns it down.

Lyon drops one short and Jadeja pulls it through midwicket for a boundary to take his score to 20 with three boundaries.

Australia's lead is now just 42 runs.

15:53
Australia kept chipping away at the wickets to gain the upperhand against India on Day 2.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni pulled a short delivery from James Pattinson straight into the hands of the fielder at midwicket after scoring 24 from 23 balls.

India are reeling ta 210 for six in 53 overs, still trailing Australia's first innings score by 52 runs.
15:39
India 184-5 (48) vs Aus 262

Dhoni gets a lifeline as Smith at backward short leg fails to hold on to a sharp chance, who causes Lyon more grief by smashing the next delivery through the covers for a four.

Lyon then cripples India further with the huge wicket of Tendulkar, who looks to play on the backfoot but misses and is caught dead in front of the stumps after scoring 32 from 53 balls.

Ravindra Jadeja is off the mark with a boundary as he cuts a short ball from Lyon through point.
15:39
Ravindra Jadeja is having a tough time with the Aussie players on his ears since his arrival at the crease. Warner at mid-on is having a go at him and he rightly makes a complaint with the umpire, who call over captain Watson and asks him to control his team.

Meanwhile the crowds have started chanting "Loser Loser". The Australians are all charged up....everything happening out here!
15:27
Sachin Tendulkar falls leg before wicket to Nathan Lyon to leave India reeling at 180 for five in their first innings.

Tendulkar went on the backfoot but missed one that went on straight and caught right in front of the stumps to dismiss him for 32.

15:27
India 169-4 (46) vs Aus 262

New batsman Ajinkya Rahane survives a huge shout for LBW off the first ball he faced. The ball came in sharply and debutant Rahane was hit on the pads but it seemed to slipping down the leg side. The next ball is short and quick as Rahane tries to duck under it but it hits his helmet. Siddle is having a go at the Mumbai youngster, the Aussies are all charged up out in the middle.

Lyon trying to build the pressure on Rahane with five fielders close in. A couple of balls turn sharply while jumps off but Rahane plays out the over with utmost caution. A very tough debut for Rahane.

A short ball from Lyon and Rahane gets his first boundary in Tests as he pulls it easily on the leg side. But the off-spinner has his revenge off the next ball, getting the youngster caught at short leg for seven. It was pitched on the leg stump and going down as Rahane hit it straight into the hands of the fielder stationed for that shot.

MS Dhoni gets off the mark with a boundary despatching a half volley through the covers.

15:13
Nathan Lyon has taken his third wicket to leave India in slight trouble on the second day.

Debutant Ajinkya Rahane perished cheaply in his first Test innings, caught at leg slip for seven as he nudged it straight into the hands of the fielder.

India reduced to 165 for four in the 46th over, still trailing Australia's first innings score by 97 runs.

Sachin Tendulkar will hold the key to India's fortune, he is batting on 31.
14:52
Peter Siddle dismissed Murali Vijay for 57 as India were reduced to 148 for three in their first innings.

That wicket helped Siddle complete 150 wickets in Test cricket.

Vijay tried to duck under a short ball but it didn't bounce as much as expected and he gloved it behind to wicketkeeper Matthew Wade.

Tendulkar had started the post tea session with a bang as he hit two back to back boundaries off Peter Siddle. The first one is flicked through square leg while the next ball is steered behind point.

14:20
TEA DAY 2

India 135-2 (38 ovs) vs Aus 262

Tendulkar is on three from 22 balls before he breaks the shackles as he plays an uppish sweep off Lyon for a boundary behind square on the leg side. The fifth ball stays low and Tendulkar goes back and it has hit his pads but he immediately shows his bat to signal an inside edge and that has saved him. He tries to pull the last ball which is short in length but it hits the pads and goes for four leg byes.

Tendulkar is getting confident with every passing over. Lyon overpitches and Tendulkar drives it through the covers for a cracking boundary, that was his best shot of the innings so far.

At tea, India are 135 for two in 38 overs, having scored 76 runs in 24 overs for the loss of two wickets.

Tendulkar is on 12 from 30 balls, while Vijay has batted patiently for 54 from 111 balls, with eight fours.

Nathan Lyon has caused the most problems for India, taking two for 32 in 10 overs.
14:15

India 120-2 (32 ovs) vs Aus 262

Sachin Tendulkar walks out to a huge cheer from the Kotla in what could be his last Test match in India.

Vijay plays Pattinson on the leg side to bring up his half-century from 85 balls to continue his golden run with the bat following his two centuries in his last two Tests.

Pattinson bowls a bouncer to Tendulkar first up which he comfortably ducks under and does the same two balls later before defending the last ball of the backfoot.

In the next over, Vijay chips down the track to Lyon and lofts him over midwicket for a four as India reach 119 for two after 30 overs.

Johnson comes into the attack and Tendulkar clips him on the leg side for one to get off the mark from the 10th ball he faced.

Tendulkar survives a huge shout for LBW against Lyon. The veteran batsman tried to play the sweep shot but missed and was struck right in front of the stumps but umpire Richard Kettleborough ruled it not out. A huge reprieve for Tendulkar.

13:42
India 114-2 (28 ovs) vs Aus 262

Nathan Lyon makes the first breakthrough for Australia with the wicket of opener Cheteshwar Pujara for 52.

The right-hander played inside the line as he came forward to defend but the ball didn't turn much and hit his off-stump.

Pujara put on 108 runs for the opening wicket with Vijay to give India a good start.

As expected Virat Kohli comes in to bat at No.3 and is off the mark with a single. Lyon has one for 17 in four overs and he now switches to round the wicket to bring the LBWs into play.

And the move pays off as Kohli misses one and is trapped leg before wicket for one. Lyon has his second wicket and Australia have recovered after India's good start.

13:24
Virat Kohli perished cheaply when he fell leg before wicket to Nathan Lyon for one to give the off-spinner his second wicket.

India were reduced to 114 for two in the 28th over.

Lyon has claimed two wickets in successive overs to lead Australia's fightback after the Indian openers had put on 108 runs for the opening wicket.
13:15
Nathan Lyon makes the first breakthrough for Australia with the wicket of opener Cheteshwar Pujara for 52.

The right-hander played inside the line as he came forward to defend but the ball didn't turn much and hit his off-stump.

Pujara put on 108 runs for the opening wicket with Vijay to give India a good start.
13:15

India 108-0 (25 ovs) vs Aus 262

Johnson has improved considerably in his spell after lunch but he still continues to dish out one or two freebies every over. Pujara edges the first ball to thirdman for one, while Vijay is beaten off the next ball as the ball moves away and perhaps a bit slower too. The fifth ball is down the leg side and Vijay flicks it fine for a four.

Once again Vijay is looking to get after the spinners. He chips down the track to Lyon and lofts him over mid-off for a four, his sixth of the innings.

Johnson continues and he again loses direction as a short of length delivery swings down the leg side and keeper Wade makes a good stop. The next two balls are short which Pujara blocks before driving through covers for a couple.

Lyon has a huge appeal for LBW against Vijay turned down as the right-hander tried to play the sweep but missed, the impact was outside the off-stump and what is what saved the Indian opener. But he plays the sweep again off the next ball to fine leg region for one.

Pujara uses his wrist to good effect flicking it to square leg for a couple to bring up his half-century from 74 balls, having hit five fours.

Johnson from mid-off throws it way over the keeper to give India four extra runs and the next ball from Pattinson goes way down the leg side for four byes.
13:05
Cheteshwar Pujara completes his half-century from 75 balls with a couple off Nathan Lyon on the leg side.

India in complete control at the moment at 97 for no loss after 24 overs.
12:57
India 81-0 (20 ovs) vs Aus 262

Vijay 29 (58b, 4x4), Pujara 44 (62b, 5x4)

The physio comes out again to attend Pujara, who seems to be suffering from that blow on his fingers. Pattinson bowls a couple of overs before gives way to Johnson. Pattinson also went for runs giving away 29 in six overs.

Johnson bowling from round the wicket, trying to angle the ball in. Vijay watchfully plays out the over but the last ball stayed a bit low and the Indian opener somehow kept it out.

Australia finally introduce spin as Nathan Lyon comes into the attack, in the 20th over. Lyon getting some turn and one delivery even jumped which surprised Pujara but he fends it on the leg side to the right of the fielder at short leg. Vijay immediately jumps down the track to Lyon and drove it to long-on and Pujara does the same off the next ball. The last ball stayed very low and Vijay was beaten all ends up.

Vijay's single also helps him get to 1000 runs in Tests.

After 20 overs, India are 81 for no loss, scoring at four runs per over.
12:47
India 76-0 (17 ovs) vs Aus 262

Pattinson hits Pujara on the finger with a quick short delivery as the right-hander rocks back and tries to defend. The next ball is again short but away and Pujara steers wide of the slips for a boundary.

Vijay has a few close shaves in Siddle's next over. He edges the third ball but it doesn't carry to the keeper and two balls later he gets an inside edge which passes close to the stumps for a single. For once, Siddle errs with his length and Pujara drives the over-pitched delivery through the covers for a four.

In the next over, Vijay clips Pattinson through midwicket and gets three as Lyon makes a good diving stop on the ropes.

India continue to bat positively after lunch and the only way back for Australia is now to take a wicket.
12:26
Former leg spinner Shane Warne says Australia will need to make a breakthrough to check India.

"India looking in control of the Test, but I think when the 1st wicket falls the game will change & the pitch will start to play some tricks," he wrote on Twitter.
11:43
At lunch, India have raced to 59 from 14 overs, with Pujara on 28 and Vijay on 23, with both batsmen having faced 42 deliveries each.

Johnson has been ordinary but has bowled a few good deliveries in between. He once again gets Vijay to edge and it flies wide of Watson at first slip for another boundary to keep the good run rate going.

Johnson has conceded 28 runs in six overs before he gives way to Pattinson.

Siddle has bowled well in his first spell, conceding just five runs in four overs which includes two maiden overs.

India are in complete control now and Australia will need a few quick wickets in the second session to check their progress.

Earlier, Australia were bowled out for 262 in their first innings with R Ashwin five for 57.

Earlier, Australia were bowled out for 262 in their first innings.

11:26
India 51-0 (10 ovs) vs Aus 262

Peter Siddle comes into the attack and he starts with a maiden, the first of the innings. A good start from Siddle as he keeps it just on around the off-stump and his length also meant that Pujara could only defend.

Johnson switches to round the wicket and he starts with a poor delivery, full and very wide. He was lucky that the umpire didn't call it a wide. He nearly strikes with the next ball as Vijay plays away from the body but the edge falls short of the first slip fielder for a boundary.

India are flying out in the middle as they bring up their 50 in 9.2 overs as Vijay takes a single on the off-side.

India in complete control at the moment as they reach 51 for no loss after 10 overs.
11:19
India 44-0 (7 ovs) vs Aus 262

The in-form Vijay plays a delightful flick off Pattinson through midwicket for another boundary to continue India's good start. Johnson has bowled a good deliveries but overall his line has been poor and mostly has bowled on the pads to give away easy runs.

Johnson bowls a slower delivery which bounces a bit more than expected before reaching wicketkeeper Wade, who is unable to stop it and gives away a boundary. Vijay then clips it on the leg side for a couple as India reach 44 for no loss after seven overs.

Pattison has conceded 18 from three overs and Johnson the same number of runs from four overs, but what has been most disappointing has been their lines. They have bowled too straight at times and given away free runs to the Indian openers. If Australia don't take a wicket or two with the new ball, then things will only get difficult.

Also adding to Australia's woes is that off-spinner Glenn Maxwell is down with a stomach bug and has not taken the field at the start of the Indian innings.

10:47
India 25-0 (3 ovs) vs Aus 262

Cheteshwar Pujara walks out to open the innings with Murali Vijay which means Virat Kohli will bat at No. 3 and Ajinkya Rahane will come at No. 5.

Vijay edges the second ball from Mitchell Johnson which falls short of the fielder at first slip and goes through for a boundary.

Pujara is beaten off the first delivery as Pattinson gets one to hit the crack and come in a bit. The second ball is short and wide and Pujara punches it through the off-side to get off the mark in some style and three balls later he clips one fine for another four.

Johnson then gets one to bounce a bit exta and it hits Pujara on the gloves and goes for a boundary down the leg side but umpire Aleem Dar calls it leg byes. Pujara then smacks a full delivery back past the bowler for another cracking four.

India are off to a flying start as they reach 25 for no loss after three overs.

Pujara has raced to 17 from 12 balls and Vijay is on four.

10:20
Australia 1st inns: 262 all out (112.1 overs)

Resuming on 231 for eight in 98 overs, Australia added 31 runs in 14.1 overs before they lost their last two wickets to be bowled out for 262 in their first innings.

Siddle played a valuable hand with the bat as he top scored for Australia with a patient innings of 51 from 136 balls, adding 54 runs in 20.5 overs for the ninth wicket with James Pattinson, who himself contributed with an useful knock of 30 from 91 balls.

R Ashwin emerged the top bowler for India as he claimed five for 57 in 34 overs, while Jadeja took two for 40 and Ishant claimed two for 35. Ojha claimed just one wicket but that helped him complete his 100 wickets in Test cricket.

Steven Smith made 46, while Phil Hughes hit a fluent 45 but the rest of the batsmen yet again crumbled against the Indian spinners on a difficult wicket.
10:13
Pragyan Ojha got the wicket of James Pattinson caught at first slip for 30 to bowl out Australia for 262 in their first innings.

This was Ojha's first wicket of the innings and it also helped him complete his 100 wickets in Test cricket.

R Ashwin was the top bowler for India as he claimed five for 57 in 34 overs.
10:10
Aus 1st inns: 253-9 (107)

New batsman Nathan Lyon is beaten by Jadeja, who gets one to turn big. That was virtually unplayable. In the next over, Pattinson hits Ashwin through the off-side for a couple before taking one to long-on.

Lyon gets off the mark with a couple as he nudges Ashwin round the corner and then takes a single from the last ball to bring up the 250.

Jadeja gets one to turn and bounce and it hits the edge of Lyon's bat but Dhoni is unable to hold on. That was a tough chance as the ball bounced a lot more than expected and in the next three balls Jadeja has two LBW appeals against Lyon turned down.

Dhoni puts down another tough chance off Ojha in the next over. Lyon tries to leave one at the last moment but gets a glove and it hits Dhoni's pads before going past Virat Kohli at first slip.
09:50
Aus 1st inns: 243-9 (103)

Pattinson strokes Ashwin through the covers to bring up the first boundary of the day and two balls later he glances it fine on the leg side for another four.

Siddle and Pattinson raised the 50-run partnership for the ninth wicket from 118 balls.

It was Ashwin who made the first breakthrough of the day when he bowled Siddle for 51, who played inside the line to a flighted delivery.

Siddle played a valuable innings of 51 from 136 balls, adding 54 runs in 20.5 overs for the ninth wicket to frustrate the Indians.

Ashwin continued his amazing start in Test cricket, picking up his ninth five-wicket haul in his 16th Test match.

09:00
Aus 231-8 (98) vs India

India will be looking to claim the remaining two Australian wickets and finish off their first innings without much damage.

On the other hand, the visitors, who will resume on 231 for eight in 98 overs,  will be hoping their tailenders can continue their good showing with the bat and stretch the total to around the 300-run mark.

Peter Siddle is unbeaten on a solid knock of 47 from 125 balls, while James Pattinson has made 11 from 57  balls.

R Ashwin was superb with the ball on Day 1, claiming four for 40 in 30 overs, while Ishant Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja took two wickets each.
