Timeline  Refresh

Mohandas Menon says this was the second time that India beat Australia in three days.

"It was only the 2nd time India beat Australia in three days in a Test. The only other instance was at Mumbai in Nov 2004," he writes on Twitter.

Rajneesh Gupta says this is the worst losing streak for Australia in any country, having lost seven straight matches in India.

"Australia's 7 consecutive defeats in India is their worst losing streak in any country.Had lost six Tests in a row in SA between 1967 & 1994."

Harsha Bhogle
slams the Kotla after the Test match ends in three days.

"on another note, a wicket that is designed to produce a 3 day match cannot, inherently, be good for the game," he writes on Twitter
16:03
India crushed Australia by six wickets to win the third Test match in Delhi and complete a 4-0 series whitewash.

India made 158-4 in 31.2 overs to win the match in the post tea session on the third day.

Dhoni hit the winning runs when he hit Lyon for a boundary over midwicket. Pujara played a wonderful knock on a difficult pitch, scoring 82 from 92 balls.

This is the first time India has whitewashed any team 4-0 in Tests.

India also extracted revenge for the 4-0 whitewash they suffered in Australia in 2011-12.
15:49
Lyon causing a lot problems to new batsman Dhoni, who seems to have edged it but Wade fails to collect it cleanly. Two balls later Dhoni is beaten again as Wade whips off the bails but Dhoni's backfoot is in the crease. Dhoni releases the pressure as he cut Maxwell behind point for a four.

Pujara seems to be having fun at the other end,. He decideds it's time to finish off things before any further dramas.

He whips Maxwell through midwicket for a four before cutting the next one for the same result as the off-spinner drops one short.

Maxwell delivers another half-volley which Pujara flicks again through midwicket to make it a hat-trick of fours.

On a pitch where the other batsmen struggled, Pujara has batted so fluently and was the big difference in the second innings.
15:45
Ind 2nd inns: 129-4 (27); Target: 155

India have lost three wickets in the space of three overs but maybe it came too late in the day.

Kohli fell leg before wicket to Lyon for 41, and Tendulkar fell in similar fashion to the same bowler for one.

Debutant Rahane failed yet again as he tried to play a big shot on the leg side but holed out to midwicket for one to give Maxwell his second wicket.

India 129-4 after 27 overs, needing another 26 runs for victory.

15:31
Ajinkya Rahane has suffered twin failures in his debut Test match. He tries to hit Maxwell over the leg side but ends up spooning a simple catch to the fielder at midwicket for one.

India have lost three quick wickets to be reduced to 128 for four in the 27th over still needing 27 more runs for victory.
15:26
Sachin Tendulkar perished cheaply when he was dismissed for one in the second innings.

Tendulkar was trapped leg before wicket to Nathan Lyon as India lose their third wicket.

But despite the wickets of Tendulkar and Kohli to Lyon in quick succession, India looked in complete control and set for a big victory.

India were 127 for three in 25.3 overs.
15:17
Maxwell drops one short and Kohli rocks back and cuts it through the off-side for a boundary and in the next over he flicks Lyon through midwicket for another four.

But Lyon has the last laugh as he traps him leg before wicket for 41 from 60 balls. He put on 104 runs from 123 balls for the second wicket to put India firmly in the driver's seat.

There is a huge cheer when Kohli is given out and chants of "Sachin, Sachin" fill the Kotla stadium.
15:12
Ind 2nd inns: 105-1 (20); Target: 155

Pujara brings up his fifty from 54 balls with a single on the leg side and Kohli hits Maxwell for a couple to midwicket for two runs to bring up India's 100 in the 19th over.

India are cruising at 105 for one in 20 overs, needing 50 runs for victory.

Pujara is on 58 from 64 balls and Kohli on 28 from 44 balls.

The pitch suddenly seems to have become flat and batting is looking so easy. India look to be heading to a comfortable victory.
14:54
Cheteshwar Pujara completes his half-century from 54 balls as India are rushing towards their target of 155 to win the fourth Test and complete a whitewash.

Pujara brought up his half-century from 54 balls as India looked to set to complete victory within three days.
14:52
Ind 2nd inns: 87-1 (15); Target: 155

Pattinson bowls the first over of the final session and Kohli and Pujara milk him around for six runs in that over, not letting the tempo go down.

Australia not helping their cause with some madness in the field. Pujara taps it to mid-on where Warner sends a rash throw back to the keeper for four overthrows.

32 runs from the last five overs as Australia reach 87 for one in 15 overs, needing another 66 runs for victory with another 22 overs left in the day and two more days after this.

14:35
TEA - DAY 3

India 72-1 (12); Target: 155

India are in complete control, having reached 72 for one at the tea break on day three.

India are scoring at six runs per over despite the early dismissal of Murali Vijay, who was bowled by Glenn Maxwell for 11 after he attempted to play the reverse sweep.

Pujara hit his way to a quickfire 40 from 39 balls, with the help of six fours, while Kohli is on 18 from 22 balls.

Pujara looks in a hurry as he smashed Johnson for three boundaries in the last over of the session. The last over before the tea break and Johnson bowls a short ball but Pujara ducks under it and at the last moment gets his bat out and guides it over the keeper for a four. The nexct ball is short and wide and Pujara cuts it powerfully through point for another four and three balls later despatches one through the covers to make it three boundaries in the over.
14:03
Ind 2nd inns: 40-1 (7); Target: 155

The Indian batsmen look quite comfortable out in the middle. Virat Kohli taps it past point for a couple and Pujara does the same three balls later as Lyon drops one short.

India get two overthrows in the next over as Wade first hits the stumps and ball deflects on the leg side followed by Warner throwing it away on the leg side.

Kohli then slams a full delivery from Maxwell straight down the ground beating the mid-off fielder for a boundary.

Pujara is also playing positively as he sweeps it uppishly behind square on the leg side for a four. He tries the shot again but is beaten as Lyon makes an unsuccessful LBW against Pujara.

India are sitting pretty at 40 for one after seven overs. Will they finish it today itself?

13:48
India 20-1 (4 ovs); Target: 155

Murali Vijay and Cheteshwar Pujara open the Indian innings with a target of 155 runs, 37 overs left in the day and two more days to go. Time is not a factor but the pitch certainly is.

Vijay gives Lyon the charge first up to a ball pitched outside the leg stump which hits his pads and wicketkeeper Wade can't collect it for one bye. Australia have employed an in and out field with three close in fielders and three on the boundary on the leg side.

Vijay sweeps Lyon and beats the fine leg fielder inside the circle for a boundary and repeats the shot off the next delivery. India are off and running as 10 come from the first over.

It's all spin to begin with for Australia. Glenn Maxwell comes on from the other end. An over-pitched delivery and Pujara takes full toll of it crashing it through the covers for his first boundary. 15 runs have come from the first two overs.

Pujara gives Lyon the charge and chips it gently past the bowler for one and Vijay steers it past the slips for two runs.

Vijay throws his wicket away in reckless fashion as he tries to reverse sweep Maxwell but misses and is bowled for 11.
13:40
Murali Vijay was the first Indian wicket to fall when he tried to play the reverse sweep but missed and was bowled by Glenn Maxwell for 11.

Chasing 155 for victory, India were reduced to 19 for one in the fourth over.
13:37
Former India opener Aakash Chopra's interesting observation of Australia's tactics with the ball.

"In the 1st innings Australia didn't bowl a single over of spin till India were 80/0. Now, opened with spin from both end," he writes on Twitter.

Nathan Lyon and Glenn Maxwell open the bowling for Australia and India have raced to 15 from two overs, hitting three boundaries already.
13:22
Peter Siddle blasted a quickfire half-century before he was stumped off R Ashwin as Australia were bowled out for 164 in their second innings.

India need 155 runs to win the Delhi Test and complete a 4-0 whitewash.

Siddle top-scored for Australia for the second time in the match, hitting 50 from 45 balls with the help of seven fours. Only two Australian batsmen crossed the 20-run mark.

Jadeja was the top bowler for India, registering his first ever five-wicket haul in Test as he claimed five for 58. R Ashwin (2 for 55), Ojha (2 for 19) and Ishant Sharma (1 for 13) were the other wicket takers for India.
13:15
Ishant Sharma bowled James Pattinson for 11 as Australia lost the ninth wicket of their second innings.

Australia were reduced to 157-9 from 44 overs and their lead is now 147.

Peter Siddle counter-attack had stunned the Indians as he smashed 48 from 42 balls, having hit seven fours.
13:15
Aus 2nd inns: 133-8 (43)

Siddle paddle sweeps Jadeja fine on the leg side as Kohli makes a desperate stop on the boundary to keep it down to three, every run saved could be vital here.

Pattinson then takes a risky second run but he makes his crease just in time.

Siddle gives Ashwin the charge and tries to hit it over the cover region but gets an inside edge which goes past the leg slip fielder for two runs.

In Jadeja's next over he steps down and plays the inside out chip shot again for a boundary as Siddle continues to give India some headaches.

Siddle has raced to 39 from 31 balls with the help of six fours to follow up on his half-century from the first innings. No. 9 Siddle is now Australia's top scorer in both the innings.

Siddle's attacking approach has forced Dhoni to make a bowling change, get in a fast bowler in place of Jadeja.

A desperate Dhoni now brings on Ishant Sharma for the first time in the innings for the 43rd over of the innings. He beats Pattinson with a cracking delivery that kicks off from length and beats the left-hander who dabs his bat at it. A few words exchanged between Ishant and Pattinson.
12:47
Aus 2nd inns: 122-8 (36)

Siddle was the only Australian batsman to get a half-century in the first innings and he is looking good again. He drives a full toss from Ashwin through the covers for a boundary and then steps down the track to hit it past Ashwin for another four.

In the next over, he danced down the track to Jadeja and lofted him over mid-off for a four and tried the shot again but Sachin Tendulkar who was now moved to long-off kept it down to one.

Siddle has come out with an attacking mindset. He again gives Jadeja the charge and lofts him over the cover region for the second four of the over. He is scoring some valuable runs for Australia as their lead swells over the 100-run mark.

Wade (19) gives Ojha the charge but the ball spins in sharply taking the inside edge and Dhoni takes a good sharp catch behind the stumps.

12:33
Pragyan Ojha claimed the wicket of Matthew Wade, who was caught behind for 19.

Wade jumped down the track but got an inside edge which was well taken by Dhoni.

Australia were reduced to 122 for eight in the 36th over.
12:32
Aus 2nd inns: 100-7 (33)

Jadeja struck with his first two deliveries after the lunch break to make it worse for Australia.

Steven Smith offered no shot to one that came in with the arm and was bowled for 18, while Mitchell Johnson was bowled through the gate off the very next delivery.

Peter Siddle averted the hat-trick but got an edge off the next delivery which flew past substitute fielder Suresh Raina at second slip for a boundary.

That double blow also helped Jadeja register his first ever five-wicket haul in Test cricket.

12:18
Ravindra Jadeja struck with his first two deliveries after the lunch break to compound Australia's woes.

Steven Smith offered no shot and was bowled for 18, while Mitchell Johnson was bowled through the gate first ball.

Jadeja is on a hat-trick.
11:43
Aus 2nd inns: 89-5 (31)

Australia's top order failed once again as they struggled to 89 for five at the lunch interval on the third day.

Australia are ahead by just 79 runs after India were bowled out for 262 to take a slender first innings lead of 10 runs.

Steven Smith (17 from 50 balls) and Matthew Wade (16 from 29 balls) put on 36 runs in 12.2 overs to steady the innings to an extent.

Jadeja caused the most damage with the ball, claiming three for 28 in 11 overs.

It was an exciting first session as seven wickets fell for 95 runs in 33.1 overs.
11:33
The umpires have had to separate Wade from Kohli, who were having a go at each other while making their way back to the dressing room at the lunch break.

The umpires also had a long chat with Jadeja at the end of the session.

The match referee might have a busy evening at close of play today.
11:30
The umpires are speaking to the Indian team and the two Australian batsmen over the constant exchange of words.

Aleem Dar speaking to the close-in Indian fielders and having a word with captain Dhoni. Even Richard Kettleborough is talking to a few Indian players and at the same time Ishant goes up to the two Aussie batsmen and has a few words.

Lot of drama out in the middle. Australia started the banter on Day 2 and now India giving it back.
11:20
Aus 2nd inns: 68-5 (25)

Australia batting for survival here. The ball is turning and bouncing big time and they are only looking to survive at the moment.

Every run is a premium now and the boundaries have long dried up, the last one being hit nearly 10 overs ago.

Jadeja bowled a good first spell of three for 23 in 10 overs to put Australia on the backfoot right from the start, while Ashwin and Ojha have taken a wicket each.

Steven Smith is on eight from 28 balls and Wade on four from 15 balls.

It remains to be seen how much Australia can get in their second innings. They are currently on 68 for five, which means their lead is just 58 runs.
10:59
"Seven wickets have fallen in 125 balls (20.5 overs) this morning" says Mohandas Menon on Twitter.

Australia have already lost five while India lost two in the morning session.
10:57
Ravindra Jadeja claimed his third wicket of the innings when he trapped Ed Cowan leg before wicket to leave Australia in complete shambles.

Cowan was dismissed leg before wicket for 24 as Jadeja got it to grip and turn.

Australia were reeling at 53 for five in their second innings.

10:54
Shane Watson was bowled for five as Australia continued to slip in their second innings on Day 3.

Watson looked to pull a short delivery from Pragyan Ojha but the ball stayed a bit low and he ended up dragging it back on to his stumps.

Australia face a huge fight as they were reduced to 51 for four.
10:40
R Ashwin claimed the wicket of Phil Hughes to put India in control as Australia's top order perished cheaply.

Hughes was trapped leg before wicket for six as Australia slipped to 41 for three in their second innings.

Ashwin got one to turn sharply beating Hughes's defensive prod hitting his backfoot and maybe it looked it would have missed the off-stump.

Jadeja had taken the first two wickets to fall in the first innings.
10:37
Aus 2nd inns: 40-2 (10)

Ed Cowan chips down the track and drives Jadeja through midwicket for a four. The next ball is short and Cowan pulls it behind square on the leg side for another boundary.

Cowan getting the boundaries to release the early pressure. Ashwin drops one short and the left-hander cuts it over point for a boundary, his fourth boundary to take his score to 19.

Australia are 40 for two after 12 overs, which means they are effectively 30 for two.
10:25
Aus 2nd inns: 24-2 (7)

Ravindra Jadeja has worked his magic with the ball with two wickets in his first two overs.

The Maxwell gamble has failed. Jadeja gets one to turn enough to take the outside edge and it goes on to hit the stumps to send him back for eight.

In his next over, Jadeja gets the wicket of Warner, who goes on the back foot to play it on the leg side but misses and is caught plumb in front of the stumps for eight.

Jadeja had a lot to say to Warner, who was making his way to the dressing room.

Australia in deep trouble at 24 for two in seven overs.

10:14
Ravindra Jadeja has taken two wickets in his first two overs to leave Australia in trouble in their second innings.

Australia are struggling at 20 for two in the seventh over.

David Warner was trapped leg before wicket for eight and surprise opener Glenn Maxwell was bowled for the same score by the left-arm spinner.

Earlier, India were bowled out for 272 taking a narrow first innings lead of 10 runs.
10:06
Ravindra Jadeja strikes in his first over with the wicket of Australia opener Glenn Maxwell, who is bowled for eight.

In their second innings, Australia were reduced to 15 for one in the 5th over.

Earlier, India were bowled out for 272 taking a narrow first innings lead of 10 runs.
09:57
This is the third best bowling figures by an Australian spinner in India.

"Best figures by Aussie spinners in India: 8-215 J Krejza (Nagpur 2008), R Benaud 7-72 (Chennai 1956), 7-94 NATHAN LYON (Delhi 2013) #IndvAus" writes Rajneesh Gupta on Twitter.

"Best figures vs India at Delhi: 8-69 Sikander Bakht (1979), 7-46 John Lever (1976), 7-94 N LYON (2013), 7-100 M Muralitharan (2005)," he adds.
09:56
In another Test match currently being played in Auckland, New Zealand have taken the upperhand against England:

New Zealand chose not to enforce the follow-on after dismissing England for 204 after tea on the back of Trent Boult's first five-wicket haul on the third day of the deciding third test on Sunday.

New Zealand had a lead of 239 runs after making 443 in their first innings but captain Brendon McCullum decided not to make the tourists go in again to ensure his team were not forced to bat last on the pitch.

09:45
India 1st inns: 272 all out

Nathan Lyon claimed the remaining two Indian wickets to bowl them out for 272 in their first innings.

Lyon took the wickets of Ishant Sharma and Pragyan Ojha with successive deliveries to finish with wonderful figures of seven for 94 in 23.2 overs.

India lasted just eight minutes and 13 deliveries on Day 3, adding just six runs to their overnight tally. Bhuvneshwar Kumar finished unbeaten on 14.

India took a narrow lead of just 10 runs after Australia had made 262 in their first innings.

09:20
Australia captain Michael Clarke has reached Sydney earlier today and this is what he said on his injury and return to cricket.

"I don't really know (how the injury is) at this stage.

"I'm just off a plane, so I'll have scans next week and spend plenty of time with the physio and fingers crossed hopefully it pulls up ok.

"It's a little bit sore, sitting down for 12 hours has made it a little bit stiff but I'm really confident that I'll go and have the scans firstly, hopefully they come back pretty positive and I'm in good hands with my physio here in Sydney.

"I haven't even thought about (the IPL) to be honest, right now it's about having the scans and waiting to see what the results say.

"I think I need to wait on the results, listen to the experts and then make a plan from there."

"I need to have the X-rays, listen to the experts and then make a plan, but from my point of view I'm always pretty positive so I think it's very unlikely I'll miss the Champions Trophy and the Ashes.

"I'll listen to the experts once I've had my scans and do as I'm told (by medical staff)."
09:12
India 266-8 (68.1) vs Aus 262

India will be hoping their last two wickets can score some runs and stretch their lead on Day 3 of the fourth and final Test in Delhi.

India finished Day 3 on 266 for eight in their first innings in reply to Australia's score of 262.

Nathan Lyon led Australia's superb fightback with the ball with a five-wicket haul. Lyon registered wonderful figures of five for 94 in 22.1 overs to keep his team in the hunt.
