Timeline  Refresh

23:35

England: 113-3 (35 overs)
India: 152

England end Day One of the Fourth Test at Old Trafford, Manchester, on 113 for three, 39 behind the Indian first innings total.

Ian Bell is unbeaten on 45 with nightwatchman Jordan yet to open their account. Aaron is the pick of the Indian bowlers with figures of two for 26.

Ballance's wicket towards the fag end has given India that breathing space but England very much on top.

We are in for a great second day. That's all for now. Good night.
23:29

England: 113-3
India: 152

A boundary by Bell, off Singh, helps England get past the 100-run mark, in the 29th over.

Aaron replaces Singh (11-1-50-0) in the attack in the 31st over. He appears to have had Ballance (on 35) caught behind but umpire Erasmus labels it a no-ball.

Aaron strikes towards the end of the opening day, having Ballance (37) out leg before.

Ballance's 87-ball knock was inclusive of six boundaries and he helped Bell add 77 runs for the third wicket.

Chris Jordan is out as the nightwatchman.
22:46

England: 89-2
India: 152

A superb square cut, off Singh, helps Bell get his third boundary and move into the double figures. He gets his fourth and fifth in the next over by Aaron, on both occasions making most use of the short ball.

Ballance helps himself to a couple of boundaries in Singh's seventh over.

R Ashwin is introduced into the attack in the 22nd over, replacing Aaron (5-0-20-1). Bell hits the fourth ball straight over the bowler's head for a six.

Successive boundaries by Ballance, off Singh, helps raise the 50-run partnership for the third wicket.
22:17

England: 50-2
India: 152

Bell begins with a magnificent boundary off Aaron. His second comes a couple of overs later, the batsman dispatching with disdain a short ball from Kumar through midwicket.

For the record, Bell averages almost 80 at Old Trafford.

Ballance, who had been quite after Cook's dismissal, hits a magnificent shot of Aaron, a boundary to mid-on. The shot helps the home team get to the 50-run mark, in the 18th over.
21:52

England: 36-2
India: 152

Ballance begins with three runs off Singh and a boundary straight past Kumar.

The first bowling change for India happens in the 12th over, Varun Aaron replacing Singh (5-0-19-0). He concedes only a wide.

Aaron strikes in his second over, having Cook (17) caught by Pankaj Singh at deep backward square leg. It's a poor shot by the England captain and came at an inopportune moment for his team.

Ian Bell replaces his captain at the crease.
21:29

England: 21-1
India: 152 (46.4 overs)

Kumar induces an edge off Robson (on five) in his third over but it drops short of first slip. Dhoni should have gone for it.

Cook's second boundary is an exquisite straight drive off Pankaj Singh.

A perfect inswinger from Kumar cleans up Robson (6). A great ball from Kumar and the first success for India.

Gary Ballance joins his captain at the crease.
21:03

England: 7-0
India: 152 (46.4 overs)

Alastair Cook and Sam Robson to open the batting for England and it will be Bhuvneshwar Kumar starting the proceeding for India. Just one off it.

Pankaj Singh to bowl the second over. Cook hits the third ball past the bowler for the first boundary of the England innings.
20:32

India: 152 (46.4 overs)

Jordan replaces Woakes (10-1-43-0) in the attack in the 44th over. It's a maiden from him. Dhoni helps himself to a couple of boundaries in his second over.

Braod strikes for a fifth time and this time it is the most important wicket. He has Dhoni (71) caught by Jordan at midwicket.

The Indian captain's 133-ball knock was inclusive of 15 hits to the fence. Pankaj Singh replaces his captain at the crease.

He survives three balls before Broad crashes through his defences.

Broad has 6-25 as India get bowled out for 152.
20:10

India: 137-8

A boundary off Woakes, his 11th, helps Dhoni complete his 32nd Test fifty, his third of the series.

He celebrates the same with another boundary.

What a crucial innings this has been by the Indian captain. It has ensured the Indian total will have a semblance of respectability.

Dhoni made 82 in Nottinghama and 50 at Southampton.

However, even though the Indian captain is in command the others around him aren't. Kumar (0) pays the price for not offering a shot, giving Broad his fourth wicket of the innings.

New man Varun Aaron survives a loud leg before appeal.
20:01

India: 129-7

Chris Woakes replaces Broad (8-4-17-2) in the attack in the 36th over and gives away nine runs. A boundary by Ashwin, in the fourth ball, brings up the 50-run partnership for the seventh wicket.

Broad replaces Anderson (14-3-56-3) at the other end. He gives away just a single. He strikes in his third over, having Ashwin (40) caught by Sam Robson.

Ashwin's extravagance costs him his wicket, a short ball doing the trick, the batsman mistiming a pull. Ashwin's 42-ball innings was inclusive of three hits to the fence and one over it and he helped his captain add 66 runs for the seventh wicket.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar is the new man in.
19:27

India: 106-6

Dhoni gives his score a fillip with a couple of boundaries in a Jordan over.

Ashwin gets into the groove quickly, with a boundary followed by a six off Anderson.

Broad replaces Jordan (7-3-18-1) in the attack in the 32nd over. He gives away eight runs in his second over, including a boundary to Dhoni. India also get past the 100-run mark in that over.
18:52

India: 66-6

England strike early in the second session. Local lad Anderson gets his third wicket of the innings when he has Jadeja (0) out leg before.

R Ashwin, playing in his first match of the series, joins his captain at the crease.

These two need to do a lot of rebuilding.
18:09

India: 63-5

India go into lunch with half their side back in the pavilion. At 63-5 (25 overs), it is the visitor's worst session in the series.

Like they did in the 13 sessions played in Southampton, England have dominated the opening session in Manchester.

Pace spearheads Anderson and Broad both have two wickets while Jordan has also opened his account for the series.

MS Dhoni is unbeaten on 25 and Ravindra Jadeja yet to open his account.

A second bowling change for England comes about in the 18th over, Chris Jordan replacing Chris Woakes (2-0-10-0). He gives away four runs first up.

Woakes replaces Anderson (9-3-21-2) at the other end. A boundary off the fifth ball by Rahane helps India get past the 50-run mark, in the 19th over.

Can Jordan and Woakes keep up the pressure?

A wide by Woakes brings on the 50-run partnership for the fifth wicket. Just when things looked to have settled down for India, Jordan strikes, for the first time in the series.

He has Rahane (24) caught by Ian Bell at second slip. Rahane's 52-ball knock was inclusive of three hits to the fence and he helped his captain add 54 runs for the fifth wicket.

Ravindra Jadeja is the new man in.

Last 3 times Eng had oppo 4 for <25: Pakistan 21-4 in Dubai 2011-12; SA 21-4, Headingley 2003; NZ 19-4, Auckland 2001-02. Lost them all.

The first bowling change for India happens in the 14th over, Chris Woakes replacing Broad (6-4-8-2).

Dhoni slashes the third ball and it goes over Chris Jordan at third slip and to the fence, taking the Indian captain into double digits.

Anderson continues...this is his eighth over on the trot. He gives away two runs.

Dhoni and Rahane have added 28 runs for the fifth wicket thus far.
16:54

India: 23-4

MS Dhoni's decision to bat first has completely boomeranged on him. The Indian captain finds himself at the crease much earlier than expected.

Ajinkya Rahane and MS Dhoni are the two new batsmen at the crease. The former hits the first boundary of the Indian innings, off Broad. He also survives a loud leg before appeal off Braod.

An edge off Anderson gives the Indian captain his first boundary. Dhoni's helps himself to another boundary in Anderson's sixth over, a much convincing shot this time.
16:51

India: 19-4

Anderson's twin strikes takes his tally in the series to 18 wickets. What an impact he has had for England in the series.

Broad has 12 wickets in the series so far.

India: 8-4

Anderson strikes twice in his third over, having both Vijay (0) and Kohli (0) caught by Cook at first slip. He takes his tally in the series to 18 wickets.

Broad strikes again in his third over, having Pujara (0) caught by Jordan at slips. India four down by the sixth over
16:24

India: 8-3

India lose another wicket. Anderson strikes in his third over, having Vijay (0) caught by Alastair Cook at first slip.

India have lost both their openers inside the first five overs.

Virat Kohli is the new man in. He hasn't exactly been in the best of form.

And he goes, second ball, caught by Cook at first slip. It is Anderson's 18th wicket of the series.
16:16

India: 8-1

Broad strikes in his second over, having Gambhir (4) caught by Joe Root at gully. It was a length ball and the left-hander pushed at it. Gambhir's return is a brief one.

Cheteshwar Pujara is the new man in. He has had starts in the series but yet to score a big one.
16:13

India: 8-0

For starters, this is the first Test match between England and India at Old Trafford since 1990.

Murali Vijay and Gautam Gambhir, for the first time in this series, walk out to open the batting for India and it will be James Anderson, the local lad, to start the proceedings for India.

The first over is a maiden. Eight runs come off the second over by Stuart Broad, including four byes. Anderson's second is also a maiden.
15:41
India have gone into the match with a positive mindset. Shikhar Dhawan, Rohit Sharma and Mohammed Shami, the three players dropped, haven't exactly performed on this tour so far.

And while Gautam Gambhir and R Ashwin bring with them the required experience, Aaron, with his raw pace, ensures the bite that the Indian attack has so far lacked.

Let's wait and watch if India vindicate Dhoni's decision to bat first.
15:36
History has been made at the toss in Manchester.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni has become the first captain in independent India to win the toss in a Test match at Old Trafford. He has opted to bat first.

There're three changes in the Indian team, Gautam Gambhir, R Ashwin and Varun Aaron have been included.

"It's very important to win sessions," he says, expressing confidence that India can bounce back. Alastair Cook, hs opposite number, concurs.

"Yes, we would have batted first. It looks like a good wicket," he says.

Good afternoon and welcome to the live coverage of the fourth Test between England and India at Old Trafford, Manchester.

Am afraid the news is not so good.

Rain, and consequently a wet outfield, has delayed the toss. There will be an inspection at 10.45 am (local time).
