STUMPS - DAY 4

Aus 290-5 (69 ovs) & 517-7d vs India 444 | Scorecard

With a maximum of 98 overs left in the match on the fifth and final day, Australia will surely feel with their total and declare on their overnight score on 290 for five, having secured a healthy lead of 363 runs.

India will need to score around four runs per over and that will not be easy on a pitch which has deteriorated a lot in the last two days. It is also offering a lot of spin and Lyon, who claimed five wickets in the Indian first innings, will be a major threat.

India will no doubt look to save the match but will need to guard against being too defensive and allowing the Aussie bowlers to strangle them.

STUMPS - DAY 4

Aus 290-5 (69 ovs) & 517-7d vs India 444 | Scorecard

Around 15 minutes to go for close of play, so it is unlikely that India will have to bat today.

Smith reverse sweeps Karn and manages to beat the fielder at point to get three runs. Haddin slaps the last ball, which is short and wide, through the covers for a boundary off the fifth ball but misses a full toss.

Rohit will continue as Smith reverses the first ball but it goes on the bounce to the keeper. He chips the next ball gently over the bowler and sprints across for two runs.

He then takes a single to bring up his half-century, from 59 deliveries to follow up on his century in the first innings.

Karn is struggling to check the flow of runs and he makes way for Ishant. He is mixing the pace quite well to keep Haddin and Smith down to singles for just two runs, in his 14th over.

Shami comes back and he has a chance to run out Haddin. Smith hit a drive down the ground as it hit the stumps at the other end with Haddin way out of his crease as Shami collected the ball but was unable to uproot the stumps with the bails already down.

Smith is unbeaten on 52 from 64 balls, with five boundaries, while Haddin has made 14 from 15 balls.
Haddin then turns Shami fine for a boundary as Australia end the day 290 for five for an overall lead of 363 runs.

Marsh then gives Karn the charge and pick it out of the rough to despatch it over midwicket for a huge six. Karn then switches to over the wicket but Marsh chips down again and this time lofts it over the off-side for a four.

Two balls later, Marsh crashes it over midwicket for another huge six.

The last ball is lofted straight down the ground, over mid-off, for the third six of the over which goes for 24 runs.

33 runs from the last two overs as Australia finally force the pace and look to score quick runs before the close of play.

 Aus 228-4 (62 ovs) & 517-7d vs India 444 | Scorecard

Marsh seems keen on getting on with things. He comes down the track to Rohit and lofts him straight down the ground for a four.

Smith also gets into the act as he reverse sweeps Karn for a boundary before Marsh comes down and gets another boundary on the leg side.

The lead has already crossed now and around 30 minutes left for close of play.
12:28   Warner bowled for 102, Australia lose 4th wicket
 Aus 213-4 (60 ovs) & 517-7d vs India 444 | Scorecard

No incidents in Rohit's next over as both the batsmen refrain from having a chat. Spin from both ends now as Karn comes back into the attack.

Smith attempts to play the switch hit against Karn but fails to make proper connection for just a single, while Warner misses the sweep before he gets one.

Smith gives Rohit the charge and plays the inside out lofted shot against the spin for a boundary. He looks to sweep the last ball but is beaten.

Warner attempts to reverse sweep Karn but misses and is bowled. He walks back after a superb innings of 102 from 165 balls, his second century in the match.

Karn continues round the wicket to new batsman Mitchell Marsh, trying to make most of the rough outside the leg-stump.

 Aus 200-3 (55 ovs) & 517-7d vs India 444 | Scorecard

Smith drives an over-pitched delivery from Rohit through the covers for a four. A couple of deliveries later an appeal for LBW is turned down but the batsman Smith has a few words with the bowler as things heat up again.

Captain Kohli is unhappy and instantly comes over to have a few words with Smith telling him to mind his own business. And this time, Warner plays the peacemaker.

Smith takes a single and chats to Rohit, who tells him 'Why are you reacting? I am asking the umpire.' There is a lot of things happening out in the middle.

Replays now show that it was Smith, who started it all by inciting Rohit as he appealed to the umpire. And Kohli rightly asked him, 'Do you do this to everyone?'

Australia are 200 for three in 55 overs, with their lead growing to 273 runs now.
12:01
David Warner is the fifth batsman in the history of Test cricket to score a century in each innings of a Test match after Clyde Walcott (1955), Sunil Gavaskar (1978), Aravinda DeSilva (1997) and Ricky Ponting (2006).

Interestingly, part-timer Rohit comes in to bowl. Smith attempts the sweep but mishits and gets two runs fine on the leg side.

Rohit pitching it outside the off-stump in the rough and looking to get some help. Smith comes down but is forced to defend with his pad before he goes back and punches it through the covers for three runs.

India would be happy with how things are progressing with just 30 runs coming from the last 10 overs.

Australia look in no hurry to get going and at this rate it is unlikely that they would be able to declare their innings before close of play on Day 4.

Australia are 190 for three in 53 overs for an overall lead of 263 runs with Warner on 96 and Smith on 13.
11:45
 Aus 182-3 (50 ovs) & 517-7d vs India 444 | Scorecard

 Aus 175-3 (47 ovs) & 517-7d vs India 444 | Scorecard

India should have got another wicket off the very next delivery but Vijay puts down a straightforward chance at gully. Warner tried to steer it on the off-side but got a thick outside edge which flew to Vijay, who seemed surprise by it. Another let-off for Warner, who is living a charmed life out in the middle and inching closer to his century.

Shami bowls it down the leg side as Steve Smith helps it fine for a boundary to get off the mark.

 Aus 155-2 (42 ovs) & 517-7d vs India 444 | Scorecard

The short but splendid spell from Aaron before tea has also some renewed some energy into Shami, who is looking to bowl full and getting reverse swing.

A packed leg side field for Clarke with Shami getting the ball to shape in quite well. However, he pitches a full delivery outside the off-stump which Clarke drives through the off-side for a four to get off the mark and then takes a single to retain strike.

Warner is still looking to score at every opportunity. A slight error from Aaron and the left-hander crashes a full delivery through the covers for a boundary to take his score to 78.
10:48
Aus 144-2 (40 ovs) & 517-7d vs India 444 | Scorecard

Another huge reprieve for Warner, it seems. A short ball from Aaron goes down the leg side as Warner looks to have gloved and is caught by wicketkeeper Saha but the umpire is not interested. There was a noise as the ball passed the gloves and this could turn out to be a big moment in the match.

Warner rubs more salt on India's wounds as he slaps the last ball for a four through the covers.
10:42
Aus 140-2 (39 ovs) & 517-7d vs India 444 | Scorecard

It will be an interesting final session on the fourth day and it remains to be seen if Australia will go for quick runs and look to bowl a few overs at the Indians before the close of play today.

India get off to the perfect start in the post tea-session as Shami claims the wicket of Watson in the very first over after the break.

Watson looks to drive through the off-side but the ball beats him and sneaks in through the big gap between the bat and pad.

Watson is bowled after another subdued innings of 33 from 86 balls, after he put on 102 runs for the second wicket with Warner.

The reverse swing is proving to be a factor. Shami bowls a full delivery which swings in to new batsman Michael Clarke, who defends it on the leg side, packed with a host of fielders close in.

Warner started off slowly before stroking 69 from 105 balls and is looking good for his second century in the match. Watson has taken his time and is batting on 33 from 83 balls with the duo adding 101 runs so far.

India's bowlers were mostly defensive till Aaron was called up late and he brought some much needed aggression during his four-over spell including castling Warner with a no-ball.

 Aus 136-1 (36 ovs) & 517-7d vs India 444 | Scorecard

An angry Aaron bowls a quick bouncer that Watson looks to duck under but is struck on the shoulder and it goes for four leg byes. The next ball is again a short ball but it is way down the leg side and is called five wides.

Watson then flicks a full delivery through midwicket for a boundary as runs start flowing.

Aaron then bowls a fast yorker which tails in, hitting Watson low on the pads, but clearly it is sliding down and the LBW shout is turned down. Good stuff from Aaron bowling in the high 140s and making things happen.

Aaron getting a lot of reverse swing and some dip too as Watson taps it on the leg side off the bottom of the bat for a single.

Aaron provides India with the big wicket of Warner, who has a wild swing but misses and is bowled after a good innings of 66 from 93 balls. But hold on, replays show that Aaron has overstepped the bowling crease by a long way and Warner is called back. No ball

a huge let-off for Warner. Things heat up as Warner has a few words with Aaron as he comes back to the crease.

Warner offers no shot to the next ball and shouts 'Come on, Come on' to Aaron, who is not happy. Dhawan is unhappy and he walks to Warner and has a few words with the left-hander.

Watson, Kohli and a few other players get involved as the umpires ask them to get along with the game.

The exchange of words continue between Aaron and Warner as the latter takes a quick single. Kohli now comes over to Warner and has a chat with him and asks him to restrain himself.

Warner sweeps Karn powerfully square on the leg side for a boundary before he gets two more runs from the fifth ball.

After bowling some incoming deliveries, Ishant beats Watson with one that leaves the right-hander, who plays inside the line. He plays a beautiful straight drive off the fifth delivery but to his horror it hits the stumps at the other end.
09:19

 Aus 93-1 (25 ovs) & 517-7d vs India 444 | Scorecard

Ishant continues his strategy against Watson, making him play on the leg side but now he has two midwickets in place. He bowls a maiden before Karn concedes just a single as Warner plays the sweep.

He repeats the dose in the next over as he slams Karn straight down the ground for a boundary and two balls later he plays the reverse sweep for the same result to take his score to 37.

Kohli decides to persist with Vijay. While Watson is content to play singles and get his eye in, Warner has changed gears. The opener slogs Vijay over midwicket for the first six of the innings. He goes past the 1000-run mark in 2014 and looks set to score a lot more in this innings.

Warner sweeps Karn for a single on the leg side before Watson comes down the track to the last ball and flicks it through midwicket for a boundary, his first of the innings.

 Aus 32-0 (10 ovs) & 517-7d vs India 444 all | Scorecard

Australia's openers have been a bit conservative but one is sure that their approach will change in the post-lunch session.

With a minimum of 66 overs remaining on Day 4, Australia would looking to lift the scoring rate in the next couple of sessions and put themselves in a good position to push for victory on the fifth day.

The pitch is expected to play some tricks on the final day and Australia would want to set India a challenging target and also have enough overs in hand to take 10 wickets.

Warner has been quite circumspect in the second innings. Ishant doing a good job from round the wicket as he manages to keep the left-hander quiet with a good line and length, keeping it on the stumps and not giving any width.

With just a few minutes to go for lunch, India bring back part-timer Murali Vijay to replace Karn.

He has a LBW appeal turned down before two balls later he passes the edges of the bat. Rogers then edges one but it goes between the first slip and wicketkeeper for three runs.

India lost the initiative on Day 4 as they lost five wickets for 75 runs in 19.4 overs to undo all the good work done by the top order on the third day.

Once again it was an off-spinner, who gave the Indian batsmen a lot of problems with Lyon taking five for 134 in 36 overs.

Infact, off-spinners have claimed five out of the last eight five-wicket hauls against India, giving enough evidence to prove that there is some weakness against that type of bowling.

"5 of the last 8 5-wicket hauls in #Tests against India have come from off-spinners. Lyon (2), Shillingford (2) & Moeen Ali," Arun Gopalakrishnan posted on Twitter.
