The umpires have stopped play because of bad light as it has got quite overcast at the Gabba and a storm expected to hit the venue soon.

The two umpires had a chat with India captain Dhoni, before they decide to suspend play.

The Indian team in a huddle before they walk back, all smiling and happy as they make their way to the dressing room.

Australia are 221 for four in 52 overs, still trailing India by 187 runs, who posted 408 in their first innings.

Smith continues his good recent run as he stroked 65 from 88 balls, while Mitchell Marsh was unbeaten on seven.

Yadav made a good comeback to Test cricket, claiming three for 48 and Ashwin took one for 66.

So we have a confirmation that play has been called off early which means nine overs have been lost due to bad light.

India would be hoping to take a few wickets early on Day 3 and try to grab a sizeable first innings lead.

Yadav spraying a few bouncers at Mitchell Marsh, who watchfully plays out a maiden over. Smith continues to give Ashwin the charge as he turns it on the leg side and picks up three runs at deep midwicket. Marsh takes a single from the last ball to take the score to 218 for four in 50 overs, still trailing India by 190 runs.

Yadav in the middle of a good spell as Marsh is beaten outside the off-stump courtesy of some away movement.

Dhoni has done well by rotating his fast bowlers in short spell from one end with Ashwin bowling non-stop from the other end. He has also been quite attacking with his approach and field placement which is quite encouraging.

Ashwin produces the edge as Marsh looks to play the drive but it goes past the first slip fielder for a four to get him off the mark.

Ashwin bowling from round the wicket to Smith, who goes back and tries to play the cut but misses as the ball passes very close to the stumps.

If India can get the big wicket of Smith before stumps they would have a good chance of bowling Australia for under 300.

The Indian bowlers, including the three pacers and spinner Ashwin, have showed a lot of energy and desire. Despite going for runs, they have kept going at the Australian batsmen and managed to claim wickets at regular intervals.

India's most successful bowler in the day, Yadav, comes back and he starts with a short ball down the leg side which Smith lets go. He pulls the next ball but gets just a single to deep square leg.

Marsh pulls the next ball but hits Pujara at short leg on his pads as he stands unmoved. The left-hander is dismissed for 32 two balls later as Ashwin takes a superb catch at first slip.

Rahane must be relieved to see the back of Marsh, who tries to play the cut shot but gets an edge as Ashwin jumps and takes it high over his head.

In walks another Marsh in the form of Mitchell, who is battling a hamstring injury.

DROPPED! Rahane puts down a simple high catch on the leg side after Marsh, on 32, top edged the pull shot. A good over of sustained short bowling from Aaron built the pressure but he did not get due rewards. That could be a big moment in this Test match.

That seems to have left the Indian a bit deflated. Smith comes down the track and whips Ashwin through midwicket for a couple to take Australia past the 200-run mark, in the 46th over. The fourth ball is crashing through the covers for a glorious boundary as Australia start to take control.

Dhoni persists with Ashwin despite Smith taking him on in the previous over. This time the right-hander takes a single before Marsh is hit on the pads but the LBW appeal is turned down. The last ball is nudged fine as Aaron makes a desperate save at fine leg but his feet was touching the boundary ropes while he pushed the ball inside.

The storm is inching ever so close to the Gabba and it looks like we might have a spell of rain shortly.

Ashwin drops short as Smith cuts it easily behind point for a four to take his score to 49. He charges the next ball but can't beat the bowler who makes a good diving stop on his follow through before he inside edges the next ball on to his pads.

The Australia captain turns the fourth ball on the leg side to raise his half-century, from 68 balls.

Smith is tempted by the generous flight from Ashwin as he comes down the track and lofts it straight down the ground for a six. Three balls later, he gets a thick outside edge trying to play the cut but it flies past the first slip fielder for a boundary.

The Australia captain gives Ashwin the charge yet again but this time it goes for a boundary to take the score to 181 for three in 40 overs.

Aaron decides to go round the wicket to Marsh. The first ball is short but way down the leg side as the left-hander lets it go through to the keeper.

Smith getting better and better. He slaps the last ball from Aaron through the covers for a boundary as Australia start to threaten once again through the Marsh and Smith combine.

Marsh struggled in the last series against India three years ago, scoring just 17 runs in six innings, and he looks keen to make up for it. An over-pitched delivery from Ishant is flicked through midwicket by the left-hander for a four and two balls later punches another boundary through the same region as Australia cross the 150-run mark, in the 37th over.

It looks like Ashwin will bowl from one end while the pacers are rotated from the other.

Aaron comes back to replace Ishant and continues to leak runs. Marsh drives the fourth ball, which is over-pitched, down the ground past mid-off for a four. He gets two runs from the next ball on the leg side as Australia reach 165 for three in 39 overs at the drinks break.

Ishant comes back for a new spell. Smith gets a single from the first ball before Marsh turns it square on the leg side for two runs and defends the last ball on the leg side.

Ashwin mixing his pace quite well and not trying too many things at the moment. Smith defends the first five balls before a slight error in length is cut behind point for two runs.

The boundaries have dried up as both Smith and Marsh looking for the singles and the odd threes across the huge outfield.

Marsh looking to play Ashwin forward and with a straight bat making Dhoni place a fielder at silly point. But Ashwin drifts on the pads as the batsmen steal a quick single and Smith charges to the last ball but can't beat the fielder at midwicket.

Australia are 149 for three in 36 overs, still trailing India's first innings score by 259 runs.

Smith is playing the backfoot punches through the off-side with some perfection, finding the gap every time. Once again as Yadav offers him some width he plays the same shot for three runs before Marsh gets a single from the fifth ball.

Ashwin looking to bring Marsh forward as he tempts him with a lot of flight. The left-hander defends three balls in a row before he comes down the track and gets an inside edge on to the pads which just goes past the outstretched hands of the fielder at short leg. This is turning out to be a very good contest between Ashwin and Marsh, with both making a comeback and looking to make an impression.

Yadav continues as Marsh takes a single from the first ball. Smith plays a good drive on the off-side where Rohit makes a good diving stop in the covers to save some runs.

Ashwin gets one to turn a bit, beating Marsh, who poked his bat. The next ball comes in and is a bit quicker hitting the left-hander on the pads but a bit of inside edge saves him. He then chips down the track and drives it through the covers for a boundary.

Smith plays a delightful backfoot punch through the covers for three runs off Yadav and Marsh blocks the rest of the over.

Smith uses his feet to Ashwin but is forced to defend and then he plays the next two deliveries to mid-on. The Australian captain sweeps the fourth ball fine on the leg side for a boundary as Australia reach 138 for three in 30 overs.

Interesting field for Steve Smith against Ashwin with the square leg and midwicket fielders placed a bit deeper than normal. Smith using his feet against Ashwin but can't get a run in the 24th over which is Ashwin's second maiden.

Rogers steers Yadav through the off-side as Ishant, stationed at point, dives over the ball and then has to run to retrieve it and ends up giving away three runs.

Yadav gets the wicket of Rogers on the stroke of tea. The left-hander is caught down the leg side by Dhoni as he looks to turn it fine on the leg side.

Rogers walks back after a good innings of 55 from 79 balls, with the help of 10 fours.

At tea on Day 2, Australia are 121 for three in 24.5 overs with Smith unbeaten on six.

India's pacers bowled with a lot of speed and aggression. Yadav, playing his first Test after a long wait of two years, was the most impressive as he claimed two for 35 in 6.5 overs, while Ashwin took one for five in four overs in another good spell in his comeback game.

Aaron and Ishant also bowled with good pace but went for a lot of runs as Dhoni employed attacking fields and looked to attack and try for wickets at every opportunity.

Rogers is hitting some good boundaries down the ground as he punches Aaron straight back past the pacer for a four. He then nudges one off his hips fine on the leg side for another boundary.

Steve Smith pulls the fifth ball through fine leg region to get off the mark with a boundary.

Ashwin in middle of a good spell, getting turn and bounce to beat Rogers, who comes forward to defend. He cuts the next ball behind point for a four to bring up his half-century from 73 balls with the help of 10 fours.

Aaron comes back, replacing Umesh after a good first spell of one for 29 in five overs.

Rogers drills an overpitched delivery down the ground past mid-off for a four and then takes two runs on the leg side. The last ball is again driven down the ground which beats Kohli at mid-off despite his desperate drive.

India introduce spin in the form of Ravichandran Ashwin, who comes in to replace Ishant for the 18th over.

Watson gets a single from the first ball before Rogers plays out the rest of the over with Ashwin giving some generous flight.

India need to get a grip on the run rate and pull back Australia by building pressure with some tight overs.

Aaron oversteps and also bowls a short wide ball which Aaron cuts over the gully region for a four as the runs continue to flow.

The next ball is perfect, pitching on and around the off-stump, and moving enough to beat Rogers's tentative push.

Watson decides to attack Ashwin but mistimes his shot as Dhawan pulls off a stunning low catch at mid-on.

Watson made 25 from 29 balls and stepped out to the off-spinner looking to hit over the top but failed and threw away another good start.

Australia are 98 for two in 20 overs with Rogers on 39.

India trying to trap Watson leg before wicket with the incoming delivery. But the bulky right-hander flicks one through midwicket for a four before he pulls the last ball from Ishant to deep square leg for a couple. He is looking good, with a lot of balls hitting the middle, to race to 23 from as many balls.

Despite Warner's wicket, Australia continue to score at more than five runs per over, to reach 81 for one in 16 overs.

Rogers need a good showing with the bat to cement his place in the team. He is doing well so far as he turns the fourth ball from Yadav on the leg side for a couple before he plays a lovely straight drive for a boundary to take his score to 23.

Ishant has a huge appeal for LBW against Watson turned down. The ball came in sharply and Watson was half-forward but the impact was a bit high on the pads which meant the decision went in favour of the batsman.

The next ball goes the other way as Watson has to play at it, getting an edge which goes wide of the third slip fielder.

Dhoni has a chat with Ishant 'asking him to bowl where he wants' and following that he brings an additional fielder on the off-side from fine leg.

Watson plays a cracking cover drive as he takes a confident forward stride and hits it emphatically through the gap on the off-side. Two balls later he turns it on the leg side for two runs before Rogers take two from the last ball.

Australia are 75 for one in 15 overs with Rogers on 25 and Watson on 17.

Rogers gets a single on the leg side before Yadav bowls the fastest delivery of the match clocked at 147.8 kmph which Watson defends.

The young Indian pacer has beaten Johnson, who fastest delivery in the first inning was recorded at 146.4.

However, the last ball is a freebie, full and on the pads which Watson clips through midwicket for a four.

Ishant comes back after a fiery first spell of five overs from Aaron. And he starts with a no-ball after overstepping the bowling crease, this is becoming a bit too regular from the tall pacer. Rogers is caught in two minds as he looks to pull initially before withdrawing at the last minute to mishit it on the off-side.

Yadav strikes with the key wicket of dangerman Warner, who gets a leading edge as he tries to turn it on the leg side and is caught by Ashwin, who runs back from the slips, after a quickfire 29 from 27 balls.

Warner was too early into the shot and India have got the big wicket of Warner very early.

Aaron bowls a quick short ball to Watson, who is caught off-guard as he tries to fend it. The ball hits the gloves and flies over the slips for a boundary to get the right-hander off the mark.

The last ball bounces a bit more than expected from good length hitting Watson high on the bat.

Australia have reached 51 for one in 10 overs with Rogers on 16 and Watson on four.

Ishant has gone for 26 runs in three overs before he makes way for Umesh Yadav. Warner turns the first ball on the leg side for two runs before he gets one from the third ball on the off-side. Rogers also picks a single from the next ball to make it four runs from the over.

Rogers drives the first ball of Aaron's fourth over through the covers for a four before he plays a lovely straight drive but it is stopped by the fast bowler on his follow through.

Warner throws his bat at a wide delivery but gets only a single to the point fielder stationed a bit deep than normal.

Rogers then rocks back and steers the last ball behind point for his second four of the over as Australia race to 43 for no loss after eight overs.

Warner has hit 25, while Rogers has made 16 with both having faced 25 deliveries each.

Ishant switches to round the wicket straightaway to Warner. He throws his bat at the wide delivery which flies over the off-side for his first boundary and he crashes the fifth ball through the off-side for another four.

Meanwhile, Rogers, is cautious at the start and he plays out a maiden over from Aaron.

Ishant bowls a wide half-volley which Warner smashes through the covers for a boundary. The strategy to bowl round the wicket to the Australian opener is not working as Warner slaps the fourth ball past mid-off for another four to race to 17 from 15 balls.

Ishant switches to over the wicket and an aggressive Warner tries to flick it through the leg side but cannot make proper connection.

Ishant oversteps again before Warner punches it down the ground for the third four of the over.

Warner has raced to 21 from 18 balls with the help of five fours as Australia reach 27 for no loss in five overs.

The visitors lost six wickets for 97 runs in 26.4 overs as Australia made a good comeback courtesy of Hazlewood, who claimed five for 68 in 23.2 on debut.

Haddin misses the chance to add to his tally as Aaron edges Lyon but the Aussie wicketkeeper fails to hold on. The right-hander comes down the track and lofts it back over the bowler for a couple after having chipped the first ball through the covers for the same result to get off the mark.

Aaron (4) gets an inside edge off the last ball as the substitute fielder at short leg takes a superb reflex catch to give Lyon his second wicket of the innings. Queensland youngster Marnus Labuschagne is the substitute fielder, who took the catch diving forward full length to earn a wicket for Australia.

That wicket means lunch has been postponed by 30 minutes as Australia bring back Johnson to replace Hazlewood.

Yadav is decent with the bat but is all at sea against Johnson's extra pace and is lucky to survive that over.

Yadav gets down on one knee and powerfully sweeps Lyon, beating the fielder at deep square leg for a four to get off the mark. He lofts the fifth ball over the leg side but gets only a single and Aaron defends the last ball.

Yadav miscues the pull shot against Hazlewood and it goes fine on the leg side for a four to bring up India's 400, in the 107th over. He throws his bat at the next ball outside the off-stump before he ducks under a bouncer.

Will Dhoni look to play some attacking shots with just the last three batsmen at his disposal? He glances Lyon fine on the leg side for two runs before he reverse sweeps the next ball square on the off-side for a boundary to take his score to 30. He comes down the track to the last ball and takes a single wide of the mid-on to retain strike.

Hazlewood tries a short ball to Dhoni who pulls it on the leg side where Johnson makes a good stop at deep square leg to keep it down to two. The Indian captain falls off the next ball, caught behind for 33 to give Haddin his sixth catch of the innings.

What a remarkable debut for Hazlewood, who completes a five-wicket haul in his very first innings in Test cricket. Once again the length did the trick for Hazlewood, full and in the right channel, as Dhoni looked to leave it at the last minute but get a thin edge.

India have lost four for 83 so far in the morning session and another wicket looks round the corner as Varun Aaron edges one but it falls short of the slips and has a wild swing at the last ball.

Ashwin looks to drive Hazlewood but gets an inside edge for two runs to the fine leg region. However, the pacer gets the outside edge off the next ball as Ashwin is caught at first slip by Watson for a fluent innings of 35 from 41 balls.

What an impressive debut from the 23-year-old as he picks up his fourth wicket and has showed the way for his much experienced team mates.

Umesh Yadav walks in to bat at No. 9 and he plays out the last three deliveries of the over.

Lyon keeping it tight against Dhoni, who is not looking for the big hits against the off-spinner and carefully plays out a maiden over.

With the pacers leaking runs, Australia bring Nathan Lyon into the attack. Dhoni takes a single from the third ball before Ashwin plays out the rest of the over.

After 100 overs, India are 374 for six with Dhoni on 23 and Ashwin on 25.

Dhoni has had enough of taking short balls on his body as he pulls a half-tracker from Johnson on the leg side but gets only a single. India have scored 25 runs for two wickets in the first 10 overs in the morning session.

In the next over, Ashwin gets a thick outside edge off Watson which goes past the slips for a four.

Johnson makes way for Mitchell Starc, who has been at the receiving end of some criticism from Shane Warne. The first ball again hits Dhoni on the body, on the thigh pad, before he pulls the fourth ball through midwicket for a four and then comes down the track and smashes the next ball down the ground for another boundary.

Ashwin also brings out the pull shot, hitting Watson square for a couple. Starc receives more harsh treatment in his next over as Ashwin swats him over covers before flicking it through midwicket for back to back fours.

Hazlewood is taken off after a good four-over spell on Day 2 and he makes way for Shane Watson.

The all-rounder strikes in his first over on the second day as Rohit gets a thick outside edge which is brilliantly caught by captain Steve Smith at third slip diving full length to his right.

Rohit, who made 32, once again disappoints in Test cricket, as he fails to get going after a good start. He added to his own misery but playing a loose shot, away from his body without any footwork.

The wicket of Rohit exposes India's tail and Australia would be hoping to finish off the Indian innings in the morning session itself.

The wicket of Rahane forcing India to start all over again. Rohit has been particularly watchful and is not looking to play away from his body as he defends the over from Johnson and Dhoni does the same against Hazlewood in the next over.

Johnson bowls a short ball at Rohit before he tries a full delivery as the right-hander is caught on the crease trying to drive and gets an inside edge for a single. In the same over, Dhoni survives a confident shout for LBW as he goes back to defend. The Indian captain then is brave enough to take a quick bouncer on his body which hits him on the shoulder and goes on to fine leg but umpire Marais Erasmus calls it a dead ball as the right-hander takes a bye.

Dhoni gets off the mark with a single on the leg side from the 13th ball he faced as India reach 324 for five in 90 overs.

Rahane slams an overpitched delivery through the off-side for a boundary but the bowler Hazlewood gets revenge from the very next ball.

Rahane gets an outside edge and is caught behind after a good innings of 81. That was a beauty from the debutant pacer as Rahane looks to defend off the backfoot but the movement beats him and takes the edge.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni leaves the first ball he faces before he awkwardly gets out of the way of a quick bouncer.

Rahane takes a single on the off-side from the second ball for the first run on the second day before Rohit watchfully defends the rest of the over.

Johnson comes in from the other end. Rahane throws his bat at wide delivery but is beaten as the keeper and slips appeal but the bowler is not interested. The Hotspot replays show some spot on the bottom of the bat but the evidence is not very clear. Rohit plays away from his body but manages to steer the last ball through point for a four.

Indian opener Murali Vijay put Australia to the sword in their Brisbane fortress with a brilliant 144 to help drive the tourists to 311 for four at the close of play on the opening day of the second Test on Wednesday.

The 30-year-old shared an opening partnership of 56 with Shikhar Dhawan, stalled a little in the sweltering heat after lunch and then opened up after reaching his fifth Test century in the final session.

His innings came to an end after five and a half hours when he stepped down the pitch in search of a 23rd boundary and was caught behind off Nathan Lyon, Australia's off-spinning hero from their 48-run victory in the first Test.

Ajinkya Rahane, who shared a 124-run partnership with Vijay, will resume on 75 not out on day two along with Rohit Sharma (26) as India look to inflict a first defeat on Australia at the Gabba since 1988.

It was a tough first day as stand-in Australia skipper for Steve Smith, who lost Mitchell Marsh to a hamstring problem after the all-rounder had claimed his first Test victim in Dhawan with the only wicket to fall before lunch.

Debutant paceman Josh Hazlewood was also forced to leave the field midway through his 16th over, having taken his first two Test wickets after lunch.
