Johnson has again leaked a few runs. Once again a short wide delivery is steered past the gully fielder for a boundary before he gets out of the way of a quick bouncer. Another bouncer which Pujara leaves alone before Johnson pitches the last ball up which is defend with some conviction by the Indian right-hander.

Dhawan defend on the off-side resisting the temptation to go for the drive. He plays on the up against Hazlewood as the ball goes in the air through the covers for two runs but is beaten off the next as the ball moves away.

Johnson switches to over the wicket and back again to over but Pujara is able to successfully deal with him.

At stumps on Day 3, India are 71 for one in 23 overs with Dhawan on 26 from 65 balls and Pujara on 15 from 35 balls. They still trail Australia by 26 runs.

Smith, who hit 133, along with the tailenders turned the tide for Australia as they took a handy 97-run first innings lead.

The pitch is still good for batting and if India can bat well in the morning session they will be on top. The first hour of play on Day 4 on Saturday will be crucial for both teams.

Watson has settled into a good rhythm. Dhawan edges the fifth delivery of the 16th over but the edges goes past the slips for a four, his second of the innings. The left-hander has still not looked convincing despite spending more than an hour at the wicket.

Johnson comes back for another spell as Starc is given a rest. He keeps it short against Pujara, who cuts the last ball behind the point region for a four.

Dhawan defends a full delivery from Watson back to the bowler who throws it back and the left-hander takes a tumble trying to take evasive action. He is beaten off the last ball outside the off-stump and is lucky not to have edged it.

India are 65 for one in 20 overs, and now trail Australia by 32 runs. Dhawan has still not looked comfortable to score 24 from 59 balls, while Pujara has made 11 from 23 balls.

Dhawan and Pujara looking to play themselves in with ones and twos and they want to avoid any risks with 17 overs remaining in the day.

Dhawan is beaten as he tries to pull a short ball but withdraws at the last minute as the ball flicks his helmet. There is a huge appeal for caught behind but umpire Erasmus has turned it down and rightly so as confirmed by the replays.

He is beaten off the next ball as he plays inside the line as Watson bowls another good over. This is good stuff from the Australian bowlers.

Pujara slaps a short ball from Starc through the covers for three runs before Dhawan steals another quick single as India reach 53 for one in 15 overs.

Out of nowhere Starc makes the first breakthrough for Australia with the key wicket of the in-form Vijay, who is bowled for 27.

The Indian opener is undecided on whether to leave the ball or offer a shot and it causes his downfall as the ball strikes the bat and deflects on to the stumps.

A big wicket for Australia even before India have wiped off the deficit.

Cheteshwar Pujara needs a good innings to ward off some of his critics. He offers no shot to the remaining three deliveries from Starc.

Watson getting the ball to move as Dhawan nudges the second ball to fine leg for one before Pujara is beaten by a full delivery that leaves him. He gets a thick outside edge off the last ball for a single to the thirdman region.

Johnson gets a break after four overs with the new ball and he makes way for Starc, who bowls a few full deliveries to Vijay. The right-hander looks to defend the new bowler before he takes a single on the off-side.

Shane Watson comes into the attack as Australia continue with their tactics of using their pacers in short bursts. Vijay gets a single from the first ball before Dhawan misses the flick off two deliveries and fails to get a run from the rest of the over.

India off to a positive start to reach 41 for no loss in 10 overs with Vijay on 28 from 36 balls and Dhawan on 12 from 25 balls.

Dhawan gets into the act as steers a wide short delivery from Hazlewood over the slips for a boundary. He inside edges the fifth delivery going for a drive through the off-side as the ball passes close to the stumps for a couple as India race to 33 for no loss after six overs, scoring at 5.5 per over.

Johnson, who has gone for 19 runs in three overs, stops the rot with a maiden over to Vijay.

But Vijay is in full flow at the moment. A good length delivery around the off-stump from Hazlewood is driven in some style for a boundary through the covers by Vijay, who takes his score to 25 from 27 balls. A fielder placed at short extra cover but Vijay still continues to drive but gets only a single to the covers.

Dhawan looking for quick singles to get himself in. Vijay is again looking in good form as he flicks a full delivery on the pads from Hazlewood through midwicket for three runs. Dhawan then ducks under a bouncer before trying to steal a quick single from the last ball but he is turned down.

Vijay is not holding back, maybe wants to assert himself against Johnson. The left-armer switches to round the wicket and Vijay thumps a full delivery over the covers for a boundary. India sending out a statement and will continue to be aggressive no matter what!

A wide half-volley is then sent crashing through point for a boundary before he plays another crisp cover drive but gets three runs.

Dhawan steers the fifth ball past point for a couple before he flicks the last ball to fine leg for a single to get 15 runs from the over.

Ausralia's bowlers did all the damage with the bat as Johnson (88), Starc (52), Lyon (23) and Hazlewood (32 not out) played vital innings to leave the Indians frustrated.

Australia's last four wickets added 258 runs as India's bowlers were unable to make any sort of impression and were made to pay for some lacklustre bowling.

Mitchell Johnson opens the bowling and up against him is the in-form Murali Vijay while at the other end Shikhar Dhawan needs a good innings to dispel doubts about his place in the team.

Johnson starts with a good maiden over making Vijay play more often than not. Hazlewood, who took five wickets in the first innings, will bowl the second over.

Dhawan gets an inside edge off the second ball which goes on the leg side for the first runs of the innings.Vijay clips the third ball square where the fielder misfields to give away two runs followed by a single to mid-on.

Vijay is struck on the shoulder by a bouncer from Johnson as he ducks under it but he drives the next ball through point for a four as the left-arm pitches it right up.

Ashwin finishes off the Australian innings in the first over of the post-tea session. Starc misses the slog sweep and is bowled after a good innings of 52 from 59 balls.

Australia are bowled out for 505 in 109.4 overs for a handy first innings lead of 97 runs.

Debutant Hazlewood chipped with an useful innings of 32 from 50 balls, having hit seven fours as the last pair added 51 runs in 80 balls for the 10th wicket.

Yadav, making his comeback to Tests after two years, was easily India's best bowler in the first innings. He took three for 101 in 25 overs, while Ashwin claimed two for 128 in his comeback game.

Ishant (3-117) and Aaron (2-145) both were amongst the wickets but went for plenty of runs.

Starc takes a single on the leg side off Ashwin to bring up his half-century, from 53 balls. In the same over, Hazlewood comes down the track and lofts it over the off-side for a boundary to add to India's frustration.

Yadav comes back into the attack and he continues to bowl well, giving away two runs in the over.

Hazlewood looks to slog Ashwin but gets an inside edge which misses the stumps and goes for a boundary to take Australia past the 500-run mark, in the 108th over.

Hazlewood makes room but is beaten by a full delivery from Yadav which goes over the stumps. He defends the rest of the over as Australia go to tea at 503 for nine in 109 overs having swelled their lead to 95 runs.

Starc, under fire for his lacklustre bowling, has answered his critics in style with a smashing innings with the bat. The left-hander slammed 51 from 57 balls, while Hazlewood made 31 from 48 balls on his debut adding 49 runs from 76 balls for the 10th wicket.

Australia smashed 152 runs in 34 overs in the post-lunch session for the loss of three wickets to turn the match on it's head.

At the start of the day, Australia were trailing by 187 runs but are now sitting in a comfortable position.

Hazlewood joins in the party as he smashes Ishant for back to back boundaries down the ground as the lead continues to grow.

India have been found wanting against the tailenders on a pitch still offering some help to the bowlers in terms of bounce and movement.

Hazlewood takes on Ashwin as he clobbers the spinner through midwicket for a boundary and hits the last ball through the off-side for the same result to take his score to 21 with the help of five boundaries.

At the other end, Starc is closing in on his half-century, having hit 44 from 48 balls.

Starc attempts to slog sweep Ashwin but gets a top edge which flies over the first slip fielder for two runs and then picks a single and Hazlewood blocks the last two balls.

Starc gets a single from the first ball before Hazlewood edges the next ball off Aaron which falls short of Ashwin at first slip who does well to stop it.

Left-hander Hazlewood gets off the mark in Test cricket in some style as he punches a full delivery from Aaron for a boundary past mid-on.

Australia are 465 for nine in 100 overs, to stretch their lead to 57 runs.

Starc is playing a vital knock with 40 from 38 balls and Hazlewood is on five.

Lyon throws his bat at a wide delivery from Yadav which flies over the slips for a four before he plays a much controlled fine glance two balls later for another boundary as the runs continue to flow for Australia.

India bring back Ashwin as both Lyon and Starc continue the flow of runs for the hosts. The off-spinner makes a tidy start, giving away just two runs in his 26th over.

Lyon is playing an useful hand with the bat. He clips Aaron on the leg side for three before Starc top edges the pull shot over the slips for a boundary. Lyon lofts the last ball over the bowler's head but does not get proper timing and gets a couple to get 11 runs from the over.

The two batsmen have brought up their 50-run stand for the 9th wicket from just 44 balls as Australia stretch their lead to 40 runs.

Starc tries to slog sweep Ashwin but gets just a single on the leg side before Lyon sweeps the off-spinner over square leg for a six.

But he falls in the next over, as he lobs a simple catch to Rohit at mid-on after a useful hand of 23 from as many balls, after adding 56 runs from 50 balls for the ninth wicket with Starc.

Left-hander Starc has taken over the mantle from Johnson. He chips Yadav over the covers for a couple before he smashes one back but the bowler is unable to hold on to a difficult chance on his follow through and it also strikes umpire Marais Erasmus.

Starc then heaves it over the leg side for a four to race to 21 from 16 balls.

Starc on the attack as he mishits the pull shot over the keeper for the second four of the over, which goes for 12 runs.

Nathan Lyon gets a thick inside edge fine on the leg side for a couple to get off the mark. Aaron bowls a quick bouncer which Lyon ducks under but is struck on the back. The last ball is pitched up and Lyon punches it down the ground past mid-on for three runs.

The most disappointing aspect of India's bowling has been the poor economy rate of their two frontline pacers -- Varun Aaron and Ishant Sharma, who have conceded as many as 36 boundaries between them, points out Mohandas Menon on Twitter.

Aaron looking to keep it full against the tailenders. Starc is beaten outside the off-stump before the left-hander steers it past point for three runs to take Australia past the 400-run mark.

In the next over, he drives Ishant square on the off-side for a boundary and punches the next ball straight past mid-off for the same result as Australia take the lead to reach 410 for eight in 90 overs.

Smith slaps a full delivery square on the off-side for a boundary as Aaron overpitches and he steers the last ball past slips for the same result.

Ishant finally gets the coveted the breakthrough with the wicket of the rampaging Johnson, who gets an edge and is caught behind for an entertaining innings of 88 from 93 balls, having hit 13 fours and a six.

Johnson put on a quickfire stand of 148 runs from 26 overs with Smith to lead Australia's superb fightback.

Ishant welcomes new batsman Mitchell Starc with a bouncer but the next ball is pitched up which is driven down the ground past mid-off for three runs.

One wicket leads to another. Smith inside edges Ishant back on to his stumps to be bowled after a splendid knock of 133 from 190 balls, laced with 13 fours and two sixes.

Two wickets in an over for Ishant as India make the second new ball count.

Smith's unbeaten run in the series comes to an end after scoring 347 runs with scores of 162*, 52* and 133. What a player!

Smith has been superb with his driving through the off-side. Yadav gets the second new ball as the Australia captain hits the first ball through the covers for three runs before Johnson gets an edge, resulting in a single to thirdman.

Ishant to share the second new ball. Johnson lashes at a wide ball, getting an edge which flies over the slips to thirdman for one. India look like they have gone back to the tactics adopted at the start of the day, keeping it tight and drying up the runs. Ishant drifts on the pads which Smith flicks square for a couple.

Johnson top edges the pull shot which carries over Ishant, who is standing way inside the ropes at thirdman, and bounces once inside before going for a boundary. If he he had been on the boundary, that would have been a comfortable catch for Ishant.

Yadav then pitches one up and gets movement beating Johnson outside the off-stump before he picks a single.

Ishant has managed to get back some control as he bowls a maiden over to Johnson and exchanges a few words with the left-hander at the end of the over.

But in the next over, Ishant again errs with his line and Johnson hits a full delivery on the pads through midwicket for a four. The next ball is lashed over the off-side for a couple as Australia reach 387 for six in 86 overs at the drinks break.

Ashwin to start the post-lunch session and he manages to bowl a maiden at Johnson, who is looking to get his eye in and get started all over again.

A surprise move from Dhoni as he brings on part-time spinner Rohit Sharma into the attack. Smith takes a run from the second ball to point before Johnson picks one from the fifth ball to get two runs from the over.

Johnson is being very careful in the second session as against his approach before the lunch break. He is very watchful and picks only a single from Ashwin's 24th over. Maybe Australia are waiting for the second new ball before they renew their aggression.

The boundaries continues to flow as Smith steers the first ball of Aaron's new over past the slips.

India have looked really clueless against Johnson's counter-attack which has not only recovered Australia but slowly putting them in a position of strength.

At lunch on Day 3, Australia have reached 351 for six in 75 overs, trailing India by just 57 runs.

Smith registered his second successive century to score 110 from 155 balls, hitting 11 fours and two sixes. But the morning session belonged to the rampaging Johnson, who smashed quickfire 67 from 53 balls, having hit 10 fours and a six, putting on 104 runs from 13.5 overs for the seventh wicket.

Australia have slammed 130 runs in 23 overs for the loss of the two wickets in the morning session, scoring at nearly six runs per over.

India started the session quite well with a set plan of sticking to a good line and length which got them the wicket of Marsh. But once they resorted to the short ball tactics against Johnson, they lost their bearings and it has costly them heavily.

India have let a superb chance of taking a stranglehold on the match slip through their hands and they have only themselves to blame for it.

Smith comes down the track and flicks Ashwin on the leg side for a single as they have a slight misunderstanding attempting the second. Johnson continues the charge as he lofts Ashwin back over his head for his first six.

Smith flicks Aaron to fine leg for a single to move within a run of his century while Johnson throws his bat at another one to get a top edge for a single.

Smith slaps the third ball past point for a four for his second successive century, from 147 balls. A century on his captaincy debut for Smith to replicate Kohli's feat from the last Test when the Indian had hit centuries in both innings.

Aaron comes back but there is no stopping Johnson's onslaught. He smashes the pacer through the off-side for a boundary before hitting the next ball down the ground for the same result to race to his fifty, from 37 balls.

Johnson in the mood now as he smacks it past mid-on to make it a hat-trick of boundaries.

Smith inside edges the next ball for a single as Dhoni manages to get his hand on it. 14 runs from the over as Australia continue to score runs at a good pace.

India introduce spin in the form of Ashwin to bowl the 16th over of the day as the erratic Ishant finally gets a break.

Smith jumps down the track and crashes the fifth delivery through the covers for a four to take his score to 95. He is beaten off the last ball and hits on the pads playing back but the confident appeal for LBW is turned down with the impact outside the off-stump.

Johnson punches an over-pitched delivery from Yadav down the ground past mid-off for a four to take Australia past 300, in the 69th over.

Three balls later he gets an edge trying to defend as it goes past the slips for another boundary before the left-hander smashes it through point for the third four of the over to race to 41 from 30 balls, with the help of six fours.

The partnership is worth 62 from 47 balls as the duo threaten to take the game away from the Indians with a flurry of boundaries.

Smith is moving on quietly from the other end as he picks a single to long-on off Ashwin for a single to move to 96.

Johnson whips the last ball to midwicket for one to take the score to 311 for six in 70 overs.

Johnson pulls another short ball to fine leg for a single to race to 19 from 14 balls, while Smith steers another one on the off-side where the gully fielder half stops it for a single.

India finally get it up to Johnson courtesy of Yadav as the left-hander is beaten as he plays inside the line. In the next over, Ishant oversteps again as Johnson steers a short ball over the slips for a boundary.

India in danger of letting the momentum shift as Johnson and Smith rake up 35 runs from 4.1 overs to rally Australia. He punches another short ball through the covers for three as runs continue to flow.

Ishant has lost his bearings as he bowls a full delivery on the pads which Smith clips to deep square leg for two runs.
06:39   Haddin out for six, India in control

Umesh Yadav comes into the attack and he starts with a good maiden over to Smith. India's short ball tactics against Haddin has worked as the right-hander fends a quick bouncer from Aaron straight to Pujara at short leg to fall for six. Things have gone to plan for India in the first hour on day three and only Smith stands between them and a big first innings lead.

Mitchell Johnson gets off the mark with three runs through midwicket. Smith then slashes a short ball over the thirdman region for a boundary before he takes a single.

It's Johnson turn now to face a barrage of bouncers from Aaron before he gets a single from the last ball.

Yadav also attempts the short ball at the left-hander as he ducks under the first one before he looking to pull one but misses.

Ishant replaces Aaron, who hurt his shoulder as he attempted to stop one on his follow through and looked in some discomfort.

Ishant starts with a no-ball before he tries another short ball at Johnson, who pulls it powerfully square on the leg side for a four. Ishant tries another bouncer and again Johnson smashes it for a four, this time through midwicket.

The bouncers continue and Johnson is happy to continue pulling, but fails to make clean connection as it falls short of the fielder at deep square leg.

Smith is beaten outside the off-stump as Ishant pitches it up and gets some movement but the last ball is on the pads which he flicks through square leg for two runs.

Smith is looking quite solid and has been rarely troubled so far. He steers Aaron through the thirdman region for a four to take his score to 76.

Ishant getting amount of movement into the right-hander. Brad Haddin gets an inside edge on the leg side for two runs before he is hit on the pads, playing back, but an inside edge saves him. The next ball is fuller and hits him on the pads again, this time no inside edge, but umpire Marais Erasmus says its going down the leg side.

Ishant bowls a short ball which Haddin pulls just managing to evade Pujara at midwicket but it is called a no-ball as the pacer overstepped.

Haddin has looked uncomfortable against full deliveries on and around the off-stump. Strangely, Aaron switches to round the wicket and tries a short ball which Haddin flicks fine for a boundary to release some pressure.

Australia are 247 for five in 60 overs still trailing India by 161 runs.


05:56   Marsh bowled for 11, Australia lose 5th wicket

Good disciplined bowling from the two Indian pacers, keeping it just outside the off-stump and looking to build the pressure with some tight overs.

Aaron gets it a bit too straight as Marsh flicks it through midwicket for three runs as six runs come from the over.

Dhoni shouting instructions in Hindi to Ishant asking him to try a bouncer which he does but Marsh lets it go. He continues to keep it just outside the off-stump and look to batsmen play more often than not.

Total misjudgement from Marsh as he offers no shot to an incoming delivery only to see it strike his stumps to bowl him for 11. Maybe he was expecting it to bounce over the stumps but the ball was fuller and came in sharply. Deserved reward for India for some thoughtful bowling right from the start of Day 3.

Ishant Sharma to open the bowling for India on Day 3 as Smith and Mitchell Marsh walk out to resume Australia's innings.

Ishant looking to keep it just outside the off-stump and bring Smith forward. He defends the first five deliveries before he drives the last ball through the off-side for three runs.

India's best bowler on Day 2, Umesh Yadav, has been held back as Varun Aaron comes on from the other end. Smith getting busy right from the start as he picks up another single to bring Marsh on strike for the first time. Aaron bowls a bouncer to the young right-hander who sways out of the way before he is beaten by one outside the off-stump which straightens a touch. A good first over from Aaron on day three after a patchy performance on the previous day.

Josh Hazlewood's five for 68 on debut helped Australia battle back into the second Test against India on Thursday but the contest remained in the balance when the hosts finished the second day in Brisbane on 221 for four.

India, who had been looking to drive home their advantage after taking charge on day one at the Gabba, could only add 97 runs to their overnight tally before being dismissed for 408 at lunch.

Captain Steve Smith continues his good recent run as he stroked 65 from 88 balls, while Mitchell Marsh was unbeaten on seven.

Pacer Umesh Yadav made a good comeback to Test cricket, claiming three for 48 and Ravichandran Ashwin took one for 66.

"I think we are in front of the game at the moment if we can have a good first session tomorrow," Ashwin said.

"We could have made a few more runs but 400 is enough if we can get a couple of quick wickets in the morning."
