Timeline  Refresh

12:31
Scorecard:

India: 108-1 (37 overs)
Australia: 530 (142.3 overs)

Pujara (on 12) is fortunate as Haddin puts him down, Hazlewood being the unfortunate bowler.

Johnson replaces Hazlewood (9-4-19-0) in the attack in the 31st over. It's his first maiden.

Vijay continues with his good form, a couple off Lyon helping him reach his ninth Test fifty.

A boundary by Pujara, an edge off Johnson, helps India get past the 100-run mark, in the 35th over.

A boundary by Vijay, off Lyon, helps raise the 50-run partnership for the second wicket. He has been in great form throughout this series.

India end Day Two on 108 for one (after 37 overs). Vijay is unbeaten on 55 and Pujara on 25, the two having added 53 runs for the second wicket so far.

India is still 422 runs behind the Australian total, but safe to say the final session of the day belonged to them.

Scorecard:

India: 77-1
Australia: 530 (142.3 overs)

The runs have predictably dried up. Pujara hasn't been in the best of form and Harris is bowling really well.

Vijay albeit eases the pressure with a boundary off Watson. Hazlewood replaces Harris (7-3-19-1) in the attack in the 21st over. It's a maiden from him.

It's a twin bowling change, Nathan Lyon replacing Watson (4-0-14-0). Pujara welcomes him with a cover drive, thereby getting his first boundary.

Scorecard:

India: 57-1
Australia: 530 (142.3 overs)

The start by the Indian openers is good but just when things looks settled, Team India flatters to deceive again.

Harris has Dhawan (28) caught by Smith at third slip to provide Australia the breakthrough they so desperately needed.

Dhawan has yet again frittered away a decent start. Cheteshwar Pujara is the new man in.
10:57
Scorecard:

India: 52-0
Australia: 530 (142.3 overs)

Josh Hazlewood is the first bowling change, replacing Harris (2-1-7-0) in the attack in the sixth over. He gives away just four runs first up.

After 10 overs, India has reached 38 without loss. In the 11th over, Harris has a change of ends, replacing Johnson (5-0-20-0).

Shane Watson comes in to bowl the 14th over, replacing Hazlewood (4-1-12-0). Dhawan welcomes him with successive boundaries, the second of which helps India get past the 50-run mark.

Scorecard:

India: 22-0
Australia: 530 (142.3 overs)

Welcome back after tea. Murali Vijay and Shikhar Dhawan to open the batting for India and it will be Mitchell Johnson first up for Australia. He gives away two runs first up.

Ryan Harris to bowl the second over. It's a maiden.

Vijay gets the first boundary of the innings, in Johnson's second over. In Harris' second over, Dhawan gets his first boundary, a super shot through covers.

Scorecard:

Australia: 530 (142.3 overs)

Even Nathan Lyon (11) hits a couple off boundaries off Shami, before becoming the bowler's fourth victim. However, he has helped his captain add 48 runs for the ninth wicket, off just 38 balls at that.

Josh Hazlewood is the last man in. Smith is on 192. However, he is bowled by Yadav while trying to improvise.

Australia bowled out for 530.
09:15
Scorecard:

Australia: 503-8

Harris a huge six off Ashwin over the cow corner but the latter has his revenge in the next ball, having him out leg before.

It is Ashwin's third wicket of the innings. Harris' 88-ball 74 was inclusive of eight hits to the fence, and one over it, and he helped his captain add 106 runs for the eighth wicket.

Nathan Lyon comes out to bat. By the way, all the four front line bowlers of India have scored centuries...err given in excess of 100 runs.

Yadav replaces Ishant (32-7-104-0) in the attack in the 137th over and Smith welcomes him with a flat-batted boundary.

A massive six over long-on, off Ashwin, takes Smith to his highest Test score. Another boundary by him, off Yadav, takes the home team past the 500-run mark.
08:59
Scorecard:

Australia: 475-7

A single off Ishant takes Smith to 150, his second 150-plus score in this series (and of his career) after the unbeaten 162 in Adelaide.

And he has for company a 35-year-old No.9, who plays like a front line batsman. The two have added 100 runs for the eighth wicket now.

It seems a lost cause for India, even though more than three days of play left in the match.

Scorecard:

Australia: 452-7

Shami replaces Yadav (29-3-110-2) in the attack in the 123rd over. Harris hits an excellent off-drive off the fifth ball, for his third boundary.

Harris' fourth boundary also comes off Shami, straight past the bowler, while his fifth, scored off Ashwin, helps raise the 50-run partnership for the eighth wicket.

In fact, Harris gets three boundaries in that Ashwin over. Another single off Ashwin helps Harris complete his third Test fifty. What an innings it has been.

Australia also get past the 450-run mark in that over, the 132nd of their innings.
08:03
Scorecard:

Australia: 404-7

Ashwin starts the proceedings after lunch. It's a maiden.

Yadav to bowl the second over. He gives away three runs.

A spectacular pull over mid-on by Harris, off Yadav, helps Australia get past the 400-run mark, in the 121st over.

This is a healthy score on this wicket. Let's see how much more can the home team add.
07:02
Scorecard:

Australia: 389-7

Australia head into lunch on Day Two comfortably placed at 389 for seven (115 overs).

The home team has added a whopping 130 runs in just 25 overs.

Leading from the front is skipper Steven Smith, on 128. Giving him company is Ryan Harris, on 10.

It has been Australia's session all the way. We will be back after lunch.
06:54
Scorecard:

Australia: 385-7

Johnson gets successive boundaries off Shami, one past mid-on and the other through extra cover.

However, his extravagance costs him his wicket as Ashwin gets past his defense.

Johnson's 37-ball 28 was inclusive of five boundaries and he helped his captain add 50 runs for the seventh wicket.

Ryan Harris is the new man in. Smith has meanwhile, got more than 500 runs in this series. He is the ninth Australian batsman to achieve the feat against India.
06:39
Scorecard:

Australia: 367-6

Haddin's 84-ball 55 was inclusive of seven boundaries and a six and he helped his captain add 110 runs for the sixth wicket.

Mitchell Johnson, who played a game changing knock in Brisbane, joins his captain at the crease. He starts off slow, scoring just two of the first 10 balls.

However, Yadav bowls short and Johnson whips the ball to the square leg fence. The next ball is driven straight for a second boundary. Whattta shot!

Spin for the first time, in the 108th over. Ashwin replaces Yadav (26-3-97-2). He gives away just a single first up.
05:59
Scorecard:

Australia: 326-6

A boundary by Smith, off Yadav, helps raise the 100-run partnership for the sixth wicket, and takes the captain to 95.

Shami bowls a half volley and Smith gets a boundary to fine leg to complete his seventh Test hundred, his third in successive Tests. Spectacular effort this.

Smith made an unbeaten 162 in Adelaide and 133 at the Gabba.

He celebrates the same with another boundary to the leg side. However, India do finally have the success they crave for, Shami having Haddin (55) caught behind.
05:49
Scorecard:

Australia: 311-5

Yadav replaces an expensive Shami (19-4-75-2) in the attack in the 96th over.

The first six overs of the morning have seen 36 runs coming, thanks largely to Shami's profligacy.

Smith gets his first boundary for the day, past gully off Ishant. The same over, the 97th of the innings, also sees the home team get to the 300-run mark.

Shami has a change of ends, replacing Ishant (25-6-74-0) in the 99th over. A boundary to fine leg helps Smith complete 2,000 Test runs, and gets the captain to the 90s.
05:30
Scorecard:

Australia: 293-5

Haddin gets the day's first boundary, in the second over, to fine leg off Shami.

Shami's attempts to bowl short at Haddin backfires, or do we say boomerangs, with the batsman hitting two boundaries in the former's second over of the day.

Having desptached the two stipulated bouncers in the over over mid-on for boundaries, Haddin gets a third boundary to cover point. Classic shot this.

Haddin then gets two boundaries off Ishant, followed by a single, to reach his 18th Test fifty, his first in 14 innings, since the fifth Ashes Test.
05:11
Scorecard:

Australia: 264-5

Good morning and welcome to the live coverage of the second day's play in the third Test between Australia and India at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

The home team resumes at 259 for five, with Steve Smith unbeaten on 72.
Ishant Sharma to start the day's proceedings. He gives away two runs.

Mohammed Shami bowls the second over and gives away
