He is beaten two balls later as he looks to play the pull to a short delivery down the leg side but misses it.

The light is fading fast as the umpires bring out the light meter. It is still overcast and after checking the light, the umpires decide to continue after New Zealand bring on part-timer Kane Williamson.

The off-spinner starts from round the wicket as Rahane defends the second ball on the leg side and Rohit calls him for a quick single and he drives the next ball to covers for one.

He upper cuts the last ball, which is short and wide, over the slips for the third four of the over to take his score to 31.

Rahane survives a close shout for leg before wicket but the impact seems to be a little bit high on the pads which might have saved him. But replays show that perhaps the ball was hitting the stumps and Rahane (2) is lucky to survive that one.

Two balls later he smashes a wide delivery through the vacant cover region for his first boundary.

Rohit turns Wagner on the leg side for one before Rahane pulls the last ball through midwicket for three runs.

The ball seems to have come in with the angle before moving away fractionally after pitching and Vijay had no answers to that one as India slip further, to be reduced to 51 for four in the 20th over.

Ajinkya Rahane gets off the mark with a couple through point.

Vijay gets a thick outside edge off Southee which goes past the slip region for a boundary, his first of the innings. The pacer then tries a bouncer which the Indian opener ducks under before leaving the last two deliveries.

A big test for Rohit, who struggled in South Africa and also could not do much with the bat in the ODI series against New Zealand. He gets off the mark with a single tapping Boult on the off-side from the fifth delivery.

Southee bowls a good short ball to Rohit, directed at his body but the right-hander is able to sway out of the way.

The Hot Spot confirms that the ball had brushed Kohli's gloves on the way to hitting the helmet before he was caught at second slip by Fulton.

It is a nightmare start for India with the bat as they lose two wickets in the first over bowled by Trent Boult.

Shikhar Dhawan and Cheteshwar Pujara perish in the first over itself to leave India in a lot of early trouble.

Dhawan falls for a duck as he was all squared up trying to turn it on the leg side and the edge was snapped up by Kane Williamson at fifth slip.

Pujara (1) played a poor shot to cause his own downfall. He chased a wide delivery from the left-arm pacer only to edge it as keeper Watling completed an easy catch.

Virat Kohli has his task cut out, with India needing to rebuild after the double strike in the first over. Murali Vijay gets off the mark with a single on the leg side before Kohli is beaten by unplayable delivery from Southee as it moves away enough to beat the bat.

Ishant went for a lot of runs but kept chipping away the wickets to finish with six for 134 in 33.4 overs, while Zaheer claimed two for 132 in 30 overs with Shami and Jadeja also taking a wicket apiece.

But the day belonged to McCullum, who led from the front with the bat,  with his sizzling strokeplay as he slammed 29 fours and five sixes in his 307-ball knock. Williamson was the other major contributor scoring 113, while Anderson hit a fluent 77.

Trent Boult sensibly takes a single from the first ball, turning Jadeja on the leg side before McCullum takes one from the fourth ball.

McCullum top edges the heave off Ishant but Dhoni can't get to the ball running behind as they get two runs. The NZ captain continues to charge at Ishant and throw his bat at everything but is beaten off the third ball.

His splendid innings come to an end courtesy of an excellent catch by Jadeja on the long-on boundary, who throws the ball back as the momentum carries him back before he comes back inside the ropes to complete the catch.

MccCullum walks back to a standing ovation after being dismissed for 224 as New Zealand are bowled out for 503 in their first innings.

NZ 501-9 (120 ovs) vs India | Scorecard

McCullum continues his punishment on Jadeja as he sweeps it fine for a four and repeats the shot next ball but gets only a single to deep square leg. But Jadeja has something to cheer with the wicket of Wagner (0) as Kohli takes an excellent catch at first slip.

The stage is perfectly set for McCullum to go on an all-out attack. He looks to swing at every ball from Ishant as he finally connects with the third ball which just about goes over Rahane on the ropes at deep square leg for a six. He survives a run out chance two balls later as he goes for a non-existent run as Rohit makes a good diving stop at wide slip but misses the direct with McCullum well out of his crease.

NZ 490-8 (118 ovs) vs India | Scorecard

Ishant continues his wicket ways. Sodhi, who hit 23 from 27 balls, is caught in the slips to give Ishant his fifth wicket of the innings in his 32nd over of the innings.

This was Ishant's fourth five-wicket haul in Tests and his first after a long wait of three years. Playing in his 54th Test match, Ishant's figures are quite ordinary for a strike bowler with a haul of only 154 wickets.

No. 10 Neil Wagner has a huge appeal for LBW turned down, saved by an inside edge.

Sodhi looking quite comfortable with the bat as he flicks Ishant through square leg for three runs to take his score to 22. Ishant over steps the crease again and bowls another no-ball, his old problem seems to be cropping up again!

Jadeja comes back and McCullum welcomes him in some style as he comes down and lofts him back over long-on for another huge six. He has another go at the next ball but gets it low on the bat for one on the leg side followed by a single each to the two batsmen.

Ravindra Jadeja comes into the attack as Ishant finally gets a break. Sodhi gets off the mark with three runs as substitute fielder Ambati Rayudu misfields on the off-side. McCullum then gives Jadeja the charge before lofting him back over his head for a boundary.

A bit of drizzle in the air as the groundstaff look to get ready with the covers with 15 minutes to go for lunch.

McCullum gets an edge off Southee which goes past the slip fielders for a four to move into the 190s.

Sodhi proves he is no mug with the bat as he flicks Jadeja, using his wrists to good effect, through midwicket for a four, and then takes one.

Shami softens Sodhi with a quick bouncer directed on his body which he fends but gets hit on the body. He goes after a wide full delivery trying to play the cover drive but it goes through the vacant gully region for a boundary.

But he plays the next ball confidently, playing another delightful flick through midwicket for his third four to take his score to 18.

Jadeja to bowl the final over before the lunch break with McCullum eight away from his double century. The NZ captain will not hold back as he comes down to Jadeja and lofts him over the fielder at long-on for a six to move to 198.

NZ 433-6 (108 ovs) vs India | Scorecard

McCullum nearly chips it to silly mid-on but the ball falls just short of Rahane before the NZ captain collects one on the leg side. Southee poked his bat at a wide delivery but got an edge which flew over the slips for a four.

Southee has another close shave in the next over as he backs up a long way before being sent back as Dhawan makes a diving stop in the covers but misses the direct hit. Shami then bowls a poor delivery short down the leg side which McCullum pulls fine for another four to take his score to 180.

Ishant continues to trouble Southee with the short deliveries as he is caught in two minds before deciding to leave it at the last minute. Ishant oversteps off the next ball as Southee misses the pull and is struck on the shoulder and helmet.

Another play and miss before Southee deposits a short ball into the stands over deep square leg for a six. The next ball is full as Southee chips it over mid-on for a couple. He looks to pull the last ball but gets a top edge which sails over Dhoni for another six as 15 runs come from that over.

Southee has raced to 28 from 20 balls and McCullum is on 181 (263) as NZ reach 433 for six in 108 overs.

Tim Southee off the mark with a lovely straight boundary as he punches a full ball past mid-on to take New Zealand past the 400-run mark. The next ball is short as Southee fends it awkwardly on the leg side before taking a single from the last ball to retain strike.

Shami comes into the attack replacing Zaheer with a leg slip and short leg in place. As expected he starts with a short ball as Southee somehow sways out of the way before looking to pull the third but misses. Shami then tries to target the leg stump but Southee flicks it fine, over the leg slip fielder for a four. He is struck on the pads off the last ball but the umpire turns down the confident LBW appeal.
04:37
NZ 398-5 (103 ovs) vs India | Scorecard

No stopping McCullum, who continues to take toll of the loose deliveries. Ishant bowls a short wide delivery and the NZ captain is happy to stroke it through the covers for another four to take his score to 167.

India go on the defensive as the fielder goes back at deep point to curb the flow of runs.

But Ishant drifts down the leg side and McCullum pulls the short ball fine for a boundary through fine leg. Poor stuff from the Indian pacers on Day 2.

A long spell for Zaheer as he comes on to bowl his seventh over on the trot. BJ Watling gets off the mark with a single on the off-side to hand the strike back to his captain.

McCullum smashes a full delivery from Zaheer straight down the ground for a delightful boundary to take NZ to 398 for five in 103 overs at the first drinks break on Day 2.

NZ 384-5 (100 ovs) vs India | Scorecard

McCullum steers Zaheer past the gully fielder for three runs before Anderson takes a single on the leg side. The runs have flowed off the second new ball with India's bowlers unable to make any sort of impression.

Another couple of boundaries for Anderson off Zaheer through gully and square leg respectively. He has hit eight of the 10 boundaries New Zealand have hit in total in nine overs on the second day to take his score to 77.

Shami has not been called to have a bowl yet. And he lets his team down on the field yet again as he misses a regulation stop at mid-on to gift McCullum a boundary off Ishant.

Ishant makes the crucial breakthrough with the wicket of Anderson, who is dismissed leg before for 77. The left-hander was unlucky to be given out as the ball looked to slipping down the leg side with Ishant bowling from round the wicket. He hit 13 fours and a six in his 109-ball knock, putting on 133 runs for the fifth wicket with McCullum.
03:58
NZ 365-4 (96 ovs) vs India | Scorecard

After a fine start, Ishant seems to have lost his radar. Once again he is going for a lot of runs as New Zealand continue their domination with the bat.

Anderson powerfully pulls a short ball from the hapless Ishant through midwicket for a boundary before he miscues it past mid-on a few deliveries later for the same result.

The pacer drops short again and Anderson pulls it over square leg for the third four of the over to race to 68, having hit 11 fours and a six in his 99 deliveries so far.
