Rahane then rocks back and slaps it to deep point for a single and Rohit retains strike with one from the last ball.

Rohit jumps down the track to Williamson and lofts him over midwicket for a six. But he is beaten off the next ball as Williamson bowls it quicker Aand straighter going past the edge of the bat. He nudges the last ball to fine leg region for one to retain strike.

Rahane is also growing in confidence as he lifts Sodhi over the cover region for a boundary to take his score to 23.

And the umpires have decided to take the players off the field because of bad light.

India have recovered from 10 for three at one stage to reach 130 for four in 39 overs.

Rohit hits a full delivery from Sodhi to sweeper cover for a single before Rahane plays out the rest of the over.

The ball seems to have gone out of shape as the umpires call for a replacement. The changed ball is sent packing to the boundary immediately as Rohit drives a full delivery from Southee through the covers. He is beaten two balls later as he looks to play the pull to a short delivery down the leg side but misses it.

The light is fading fast as the umpires bring out the light meter. It is still overcast and after checking the light, the umpires decide to continue after New Zealand bring on part-timer Kane Williamson.

The off-spinner starts from round the wicket as Rahane defends the second ball on the leg side and Rohit calls him for a quick single and he drives the next ball to covers for one.

Sharma takes a quick single off Southee's first ball before Rahane edges one but it falls short of the slips.

India are 97 for four in 30 overs, trailing New Zealand by 406 runs.

Rahane slaps Southee through the covers for a single as India continue to rebuild after the horror start.

Rohit is looking to be positive. He pulls a short ball from Wagner through the square leg region for a boundary before hitting it on the other side of the wicket through the covers for the same result.

He upper cuts the last ball, which is short and wide, over the slips for the third four of the over to take his score to 31.

Rahane survives a close shout for leg before wicket but the impact seems to be a little bit high on the pads which might have saved him. But replays show that perhaps the ball was hitting the stumps and Rahane (2) is lucky to survive that one.

Two balls later he smashes a wide delivery through the vacant cover region for his first boundary.

Rohit turns Wagner on the leg side for one before Rahane pulls the last ball through midwicket for three runs.

Boult gets Rahane to edge one but it falls short of the slips as India reach 79 for four after 25 overs.

Vijay gets an edge off Wagner that flies through the slip cordon for a four but the bowler gets his man off the next delivery.

Left-armer Wanger bowling from round the wicket gets one to break through Vijay's defences to bowl him for 26. The ball seems to have come in with the angle before moving away fractionally after pitching and Vijay had no answers to that one as India slip further, to be reduced to 51 for four in the 20th over.

Ajinkya Rahane gets off the mark with a couple through point.
08:14   TEA - DAY 2

India 45-3 (18 ov) vs NZ 503 | Scorecard

Vijay hits Anderson again through the covers for a boundary, making most of some width on offer by the left-armer.

Neil Wanger comes into the attack, replacing Southee. Rohit hits the third ball for a boundary crashing a short wide delivery through the covers as India look to rebuild after the horror start.

Leg-spinner Ish Sodhi comes into the attack. The second ball is a long hop but Rohit fails to connect with the pull before he gets one to sweeper cover. A lot of turn and some bounce on offer for the leggie as he impresses in his first over.

Wagner drops short and Rohit plays the cut shot for a boundary through point and then picks a single on the leg side to take his score to 15.

At tea on Day 2, India are struggling on 45 for three in 18 overs with Vijay on 22 from 52 balls and Rohit on 16 from 38 balls. The two batsmen have put on 35 runs from 74 balls to steady the innings after a few early wickets.
07:57   India 30-3 (14 ov) vs NZ 503 | Scorecard

Vijay keen to leave as many deliveries as possible and is playing as late as possible. He plays a delightful flick off the last delivery hitting Boult for a classy boundary through midwicket.

Rohit is being very watchful as he defends carefully against Southee. He hits a nice drive but the fielder at mid-off made a good diving stop to save some runs as Southee bowled his third maiden of the innings.

Left-armer Corey Anderson comes into the attack to replace Boult, who took two for 13 in six overs. Vijay looking in good touch as he leans forward and plays a cracking drive through the covers for a four before taking one from the next ball.

Vijay lets the first three deliveries from Southee go through to the keeper before taking a quick single on the off-side. Rohit is then beaten all ends up as the ball angles in with the arm before moving away after pitching. He flicks the last ball fine on the leg side for a much-needed boundary.
07:40  India 16-3 (10 ov) vs NZ 503 | Scorecard

Vijay gets a thick outside edge off Southee which goes past the slip region for a boundary, his first of the innings. The pacer then tries a bouncer which the Indian opener ducks under before leaving the last two deliveries.

A big test for Rohit, who struggled in South Africa and also could not do much with the bat in the ODI series against New Zealand. He gets off the mark with a single tapping Boult on the off-side from the fifth delivery.

Southee bowls a good short ball to Rohit, directed at his body but the right-hander is able to sway out of the way.

India are struggling on 16 for three in 10 overs.
07:26   India 10-3 (6 ov) vs NZ 503 | Scorecard

Kohli off the mark with a superb straight drive for a boundary off Boult as he overpitches slightly.

But the right-hander falls in the next over, caught in the slips for four off Southee to leave India reeling at 10 for three.

Southee bowled a superb short ball which Kohli was forced to fend and it went off his gloves to second slip but the Indian right-hander is unhappy with the decision.

Rohit Sharma is beaten off the very first delivery, beaten by the outswinger which moves away quite late.

The Hot Spot confirms that the ball had brushed Kohli's gloves on the way to hitting the helmet before he was caught at second slip by Fulton.
07:21   India 5-2 (3 ov) vs NZ 503 | Scorecard

It is a nightmare start for India with the bat as they lose two wickets in the first over bowled by Trent Boult.

Shikhar Dhawan and Cheteshwar Pujara perish in the first over itself to leave India in a lot of early trouble.

Dhawan falls for a duck as he was all squared up trying to turn it on the leg side and the edge was snapped up by Kane Williamson at fifth slip.

Pujara (1) played a poor shot to cause his own downfall. He chased a wide delivery from the left-arm pacer only to edge it as keeper Watling completed an easy catch.

Virat Kohli has his task cut out, with India needing to rebuild after the double strike in the first over. Murali Vijay gets off the mark with a single on the leg side before Kohli is beaten by unplayable delivery from Southee as it moves away enough to beat the bat.
06:51   NZ 503 all out (121.4 ovs) vs India | Scorecard

Ishant went for a lot of runs but kept chipping away the wickets to finish with six for 134 in 33.4 overs, while Zaheer claimed two for 132 in 30 overs with Shami and Jadeja also taking a wicket apiece.

But the day belonged to McCullum, who led from the front with the bat,  with his sizzling strokeplay as he slammed 29 fours and five sixes in his 307-ball knock. Williamson was the other major contributor scoring 113, while Anderson hit a fluent 77.
06:48  NZ 503 all out (121.4 ovs) vs India | Scorecard

Trent Boult sensibly takes a single from the first ball, turning Jadeja on the leg side before McCullum takes one from the fourth ball.

McCullum top edges the heave off Ishant but Dhoni can't get to the ball running behind as they get two runs. The NZ captain continues to charge at Ishant and throw his bat at everything but is beaten off the third ball.

His splendid innings come to an end courtesy of an excellent catch by Jadeja on the long-on boundary, who throws the ball back as the momentum carries him back before he comes back inside the ropes to complete the catch.

MccCullum walks back to a standing ovation after being dismissed for 224 as New Zealand are bowled out for 503 in their first innings.
06:41  NZ 501-9 (120 ovs) vs India | Scorecard

McCullum continues his punishment on Jadeja as he sweeps it fine for a four and repeats the shot next ball but gets only a single to deep square leg. But Jadeja has something to cheer with the wicket of Wagner (0) as Kohli takes an excellent catch at first slip.

The stage is perfectly set for McCullum to go on an all-out attack. He looks to swing at every ball from Ishant as he finally connects with the third ball which just about goes over Rahane on the ropes at deep square leg for a six. He survives a run out chance two balls later as he goes for a non-existent run as Rohit makes a good diving stop at wide slip but misses the direct with McCullum well out of his crease.
06:31   NZ 490-8 (118 ovs) vs India | Scorecard

Ishant continues his wicket ways. Sodhi, who hit 23 from 27 balls, is caught in the slips to give Ishant his fifth wicket of the innings in his 32nd over of the innings.

This was Ishant's fourth five-wicket haul in Tests and his first after a long wait of three years. Playing in his 54th Test match, Ishant's figures are quite ordinary for a strike bowler with a haul of only 154 wickets.

No. 10 Neil Wagner has a huge appeal for LBW turned down, saved by an inside edge.
06:25  NZ 489-7 (117 ovs) vs India | Scorecard

Shami to start off proceedings after the lunch break. Sodhi turns the second ball to fine leg for one before McCullum blocks out the rest of the over.

Sodhi looking quite comfortable with the bat as he flicks Ishant through square leg for three runs to take his score to 22. Ishant over steps the crease again and bowls another no-ball, his old problem seems to be cropping up again!

Jadeja comes back and McCullum welcomes him in some style as he comes down and lofts him back over long-on for another huge six. He has another go at the next ball but gets it low on the bat for one on the leg side followed by a single each to the two batsmen.
05:39  LUNCH - DAY 2

NZ 473-7 (114 ovs) vs India | Scorecard

Another session dominated by New Zealand as they smashed 144 runs in 24 overs in the post lunch session for the loss of two wickets after resuming Day 2 on 329 for four in 90 overs.

There was no stopping Kiwi captain McCullum, who continued his assault on the Indian bowling, hitting 28 boundaries and three fours in 280 balls enroute to his second double ton in Tests.

Sodhi started off positively, hitting three boundaries for 18 from as many deliveries.

Ishant added two more wickets to his tally with the scalps of Anderson (77) and Southee (28) but went for a lot of runs for figures of four for 122 in 30 overs. Zaheer also failed to impress and was hit for runs as his figures read two for 132 in 30 overs, while Shami picked up one for 93.
05:32  LUNCH - DAY 2

NZ 473-7 (114 ovs) vs India | Scorecard

Ravindra Jadeja comes into the attack as Ishant finally gets a break. Sodhi gets off the mark with three runs as substitute fielder Ambati Rayudu misfields on the off-side. McCullum then gives Jadeja the charge before lofting him back over his head for a boundary.

A bit of drizzle in the air as the groundstaff look to get ready with the covers with 15 minutes to go for lunch.

McCullum gets an edge off Southee which goes past the slip fielders for a four to move into the 190s.

Sodhi proves he is no mug with the bat as he flicks Jadeja, using his wrists to good effect, through midwicket for a four, and then takes one.

Shami softens Sodhi with a quick bouncer directed on his body which he fends but gets hit on the body. He goes after a wide full delivery trying to play the cover drive but it goes through the vacant gully region for a boundary.

But he plays the next ball confidently, playing another delightful flick through midwicket for his third four to take his score to 18.

Jadeja to bowl the final over before the lunch break with McCullum eight away from his double century. The NZ captain will not hold back as he comes down to Jadeja and lofts him over the fielder at long-on for a six to move to 198.

He sweeps the last ball of the session through square leg for a boundary to bring up his double century from 281 balls.
05:12   NZ 434-7 (109 ovs) vs India | Scorecard

Shami finally gets his first wicket, as Southee is bowled after a quickfire innings of 28 from 21 balls. The right-hander shuffled too much across his stumps but missed a full delivery which crashed into his leg stump.

Indian-born Ish Sodhi, 21, is the new batsman. Leg-spinner Sodhi was born in Ludhiana before migrating with his parents to New Zealand. He idolises Anil Kumble while also getting inspired by Shane Warne, the two spinning greats.
05:04  NZ 433-6 (108 ovs) vs India | Scorecard

McCullum nearly chips it to silly mid-on but the ball falls just short of Rahane before the NZ captain collects one on the leg side. Southee poked his bat at a wide delivery but got an edge which flew over the slips for a four.

Southee has another close shave in the next over as he backs up a long way before being sent back as Dhawan makes a diving stop in the covers but misses the direct hit. Shami then bowls a poor delivery short down the leg side which McCullum pulls fine for another four to take his score to 180.

Ishant continues to trouble Southee with the short deliveries as he is caught in two minds before deciding to leave it at the last minute. Ishant oversteps off the next ball as Southee misses the pull and is struck on the shoulder and helmet.

Another play and miss before Southee deposits a short ball into the stands over deep square leg for a six. The next ball is full as Southee chips it over mid-on for a couple. He looks to pull the last ball but gets a top edge which sails over Dhoni for another six as 15 runs come from that over.

Southee has raced to 28 from 20 balls and McCullum is on 181 (263) as NZ reach 433 for six in 108 overs.
04:47   NZ 407-6 (105 ovs) vs India | Scorecard

Ishant strikes with the first delivery after the drinks break, getting the wicket of BJ Watling caught at third slip for one. The right-hander went after a wide delivery but got an edge as Shikhar Dhawan completed a sharp catch to check New Zealand's charge.

Tim Southee off the mark with a lovely straight boundary as he punches a full ball past mid-on to take New Zealand past the 400-run mark. The next ball is short as Southee fends it awkwardly on the leg side before taking a single from the last ball to retain strike.

Shami comes into the attack replacing Zaheer with a leg slip and short leg in place. As expected he starts with a short ball as Southee somehow sways out of the way before looking to pull the third but misses. Shami then tries to target the leg stump but Southee flicks it fine, over the leg slip fielder for a four. He is struck on the pads off the last ball but the umpire turns down the confident LBW appeal.
04:37   NZ 398-5 (103 ovs) vs India | Scorecard

No stopping McCullum, who continues to take toll of the loose deliveries. Ishant bowls a short wide delivery and the NZ captain is happy to stroke it through the covers for another four to take his score to 167.

India go on the defensive as the fielder goes back at deep point to curb the flow of runs.

But Ishant drifts down the leg side and McCullum pulls the short ball fine for a boundary through fine leg. Poor stuff from the Indian pacers on Day 2.

A long spell for Zaheer as he comes on to bowl his seventh over on the trot. BJ Watling gets off the mark with a single on the off-side to hand the strike back to his captain.

McCullum smashes a full delivery from Zaheer straight down the ground for a delightful boundary to take NZ to 398 for five in 103 overs at the first drinks break on Day 2.

India have conceded 14 fours in 13 overs as NZ have amassed 69 runs for the loss of one wicket to continue their charge.
04:21  NZ 384-5 (100 ovs) vs India | Scorecard

McCullum steers Zaheer past the gully fielder for three runs before Anderson takes a single on the leg side. The runs have flowed off the second new ball with India's bowlers unable to make any sort of impression.

Another couple of boundaries for Anderson off Zaheer through gully and square leg respectively. He has hit eight of the 10 boundaries New Zealand have hit in total in nine overs on the second day to take his score to 77.

Shami has not been called to have a bowl yet. And he lets his team down on the field yet again as he misses a regulation stop at mid-on to gift McCullum a boundary off Ishant.

Ishant makes the crucial breakthrough with the wicket of Anderson, who is dismissed leg before for 77. The left-hander was unlucky to be given out as the ball looked to slipping down the leg side with Ishant bowling from round the wicket. He hit 13 fours and a six in his 109-ball knock, putting on 133 runs for the fifth wicket with McCullum.
03:58  NZ 365-4 (96 ovs) vs India | Scorecard

After a fine start, Ishant seems to have lost his radar. Once again he is going for a lot of runs as New Zealand continue their domination with the bat.

Anderson powerfully pulls a short ball from the hapless Ishant through midwicket for a boundary before he miscues it past mid-on a few deliveries later for the same result.

The pacer drops short again and Anderson pulls it over square leg for the third four of the over to race to 68, having hit 11 fours and a six in his 99 deliveries so far.

36 runs in six overs for New Zealand on Day 2 as the runs continue to flow for the hosts.
03:51  NZ 351-4 (94 ovs) vs India | Scorecard

India's bowlers continue to leak runs as New Zealand continue their positive approach. Anderson steers the first ball off Ishant's new over through the gap between slips and gully for a four to raise his half-century from 88 balls. In the same over, the left-hander flicks it fine through the leg side for another four to bring up the 100-run stand for the fifth wicket from 155 balls.

New Zealand seem to be running away with things, having hit 23 runs from four overs on the second day so four.
03:43  NZ 334-4 (92 ovs) vs India | Scorecard

Veteran Zaheer Khan to start off proceedings on Day 2. Brendon McCullum defends the first four deliveries before he edges the fifth ball which goes through the gully region for a boundary to take his score to 147.

Ishant Sharma to bowl from the other end as India opt for an attacking field and looking to pick up early wickets. A misfield by Kohli at mid-off gives Anderson his first run of the day.

No stopping McCullum as he brings up the 150-run mark in some style, from 219 balls. He crashes a full delivery from Zaheer back past the bowler for a cracking straight boundary.
03:39  NZ 329-4 (90 ovs) vs India | Scorecard

India will be looking to claim a few quick wickets early on Day 2 and inch their way back into the contest.

New Zealand are sitting pretty on 329 for four in 90 overs with captain Brendon McCullum batting on 143, having hit 18 fours and two sixes in his 210 ball knock.

Corey Anderson will be looking to carry on after hitting a fluent 42 from 78 balls.
